International trade fair for handling, assembly and automation technology.
Exploring China[www.wwinn-nl.com] With the first series of its revolutionary ProFast4G next generation assembly platforms being shipped to China, IMS has started exploring the market of the world’s largest industrial workplace. In May, WWINN CFO Jolanda Olyslager and Marketing Manager Martin Langkamp participated in a Dutch trade mission, headed up by the Minister for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation Maxime Verhagen. The mission, to the Chinese cities of Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai, was organised by NL EVD International, a division of the Ministry’s NL Agency, and it included matchmaking events in the various cities.
30 November - 1 December 2011 Veldhoven, the Netherlands - Precision Fair 2011 www.precisiebeurs.nl The Netherlands’ leading precision technology trade fair and seminar.
IMS was keen to meet customers as well as potential partners for sourcing components and (sub)modules, and it got some interesting leads. Chinese consumer electronics manufacturers are increasingly being pressed to automate their production to ensure highquality, clean products. They also have to increase their production capacity to match rising market demand. IMS can offer them the high-speed, flexible solutions they require.
23-27 April 2012 Hannover, Germany - Hannover Messe 2012 www.hannovermesse.de The world’s premier showcase for industrial technology, including the Industrial Automation trade fair. There, WWINN will participate in the IVAM Product Market “Micro, Nano, Materials”, incorporated into the new special display area “Microtechnology - Smart Systems for Automation”.
After an initial market scan by NL EVD International, IMS now is engaged in more systematic market research, focusing on the telecoms industry. This research, conducted by WWINN’s Chinese partner Langtech and supported financially by NL EVD International, will help IMS to further explore the potential of the Chinese market.

Premier industrial robot project ESPS recently delivered its premier industrial robot, in line with the strategy to expand its service offering scope. This first robot project is the result of the new collaboration with FANUC Robotics Benelux, which enables ESPS to sell and install FANUC industrial robots, as well as provide services to FANUC robot users. As an authorised FANUC system integrator, ESPS has increased its offering to include robotic system engineering and integration, drawing upon FANUC Robotics’ wide range of industrial robots and automation solutions.

Crisis? What crisis?
In-house medical device production
[www.wwinn-nl.com/vacancies]
This year, ESPS was awarded ISO 13485 medical device certification in relation to the requirements for a comprehensive management system for designing and manufacturing medical devices. This allowed ESPS to expand its production activities, as it facilitates mass production of medical devices for WWINN customers. Medical devices can now be produced at the new ESPS clean room facility (class 8) in Almelo. In particular, ESPS can offer sample and pre-production of medical devices to assist customers during their product development and testing stages.
Having performed excellently during the recent economic crisis, WWINN is doing even better in the current economic upturn. All subsidiaries are engaged in large projects and their activities are growing continuously. To facilitate this growth, no fewer than eight new staff members were hired in the first half of 2011, including engineers and technical sales staff. At the moment, WWINN has a total staff of eighty. The upward trend recently prompted WWINN to strengthen its HR Management. The company’s main asset is the gratifying work WWINN has to offer: exploring new markets, designing new machines or engineering assembly solutions for new products across a wide range, taking a great deal of responsibility in projects, visiting customers all over the world, etc. Moreover, the workforce is becoming more balanced, with an increasing number of women joining WWINN in technical as well as non-technical jobs.

summer school debut in Almelo
[www.solarteamtwente.nl]
Solar Team Twente will be competing in the World Solar Challenge in Australia for the fourth time. Taking place from 16 to 23 October 2011, this prestigious sustainable energy race is held every two years and it covers a distance of some 3,000 km across Australia, from Darwin to Adelaide. As part of Solar Team Twente, students from the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences have once again designed a highly innovative solar car, the 21Connect. To support their enterprise, the team has collaborated with high-tech companies, universities and other educational institutes.
ESPS has started producing a medical device for a customer that is now engaged in clinical testing of the device. Production in the clean room comprises assembly, cleaning and packaging of the disposable device, using IMS’s ProMicro semi-automatic assembly platform with up to four ESPS staff to run the operation.
The production volume currently amounts to a capacity of multi million pieces a year, with further increases scheduled. ESPS’s clean room has been laid out in a flexible fashion so that there is ample capacity for more medical production.
WWINN participated as an engineering partner in the construction of the 21Connect’s steering unit. The design had to be lightweight, stiff and hard-wearing, with a steering comparable to that of a ‘normal’ car. WWINN developed various steering drums for the team to test and it supplied the final, complete steering unit. WWINN is proud to be one of Solar Team Twente’s partners and wishes the Twente solar racers good luck in their fourth World Solar Challenge appearance.
WWINN sets great store by collaborating with higher education institutes, such as the nearby University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences, as well as by regular contact with students. For example, students can do their internship or perform Master’s research at one of the WWINN companies. This summer was the first time a summer school was organised at WWINN HQ in Almelo. Students were invited to work on an assignment as members of an INNLab team over a four-week period. They were set the challenge to develop a module for assessing the sound quality of mobile phone speakers. During the summer school course the students build a prototype of the module, ran several tests and finished off with a final report including a concrete advice.
Their hard work now forms a strong foundation for further research and building of a complete module.
