The eighth TValley Conference on innovation and business in the high-tech manufacturing industry will take place on Tuesday, 19 April 2011, at the Waaier conference centre on the University of Twente campus in Enschede, the Netherlands.
The annual TValley Conference is organised by the Mechatronics Valley Twente Foundation, which was established in 2001 and of which IMS is one of the founding members. Its main goals are to promote the field of mechatronics in the Twente region, to stimulate joint ventures between member companies, and to enhance interaction with the University of Twente.
This year’s theme will be ‘High-tech systems in medical devices’, which will explore the opportunities that global health care trends offer the Dutch high-tech manufacturing industry.

Among them is Masévon Technology in Hardenberg, one of the stakeholders in the development of IMS’s ProFast4G next generation assembly platform. Wadinko is a private equity firm operating in the North East of the Netherlands, where WWINN also has its headquarters (Almelo). Wadinko promotes business and employment development in the region.

IMS has announced the signing of a contract with a Chinese customer to deliver production lines based on the ProFast4G next generation assembly platform. The first shipment of these production lines is scheduled for mid-2011. More contracts for the ProFast4G platform are expected later this year, given the active market approach that IMS is now pursuing in China.
The contract is the icing on the cake for the development of the next generation assembly platform, which IMS started in 2008 together with its partners Masévon Technology, ProfTech and Tumakon. Since the successful completion of this project in November last year, the partners have continued to participate in the manufacture of the new platform.
The Chinese party will use the IMS equipment for manufacturing mobile phone components. INNLab will assist the client with re-engineering their products and processes to facilitate mass production automation. Chinese manufacturers are increasingly being pressed to automate their production to ensure high-quality, clean products. They also have to increase their production capacity to match rising market demand. IMS can offer them the high-speed, flexible solutions they require.
The ProFast4G platform facilitates the assembly of small and complex products at very high capacity rates using a combination of standardised and customised assembly processes. These products include small optoand electromechanical components for mobile phones, medical products and automotive sensors. The modular and generic platform reduces production times and increases operational capabilities.

Late last year, ESPS was awarded ISO 13485 medical device certification. This is a major development for expanding ESPS production activities, as it facilitates mass production of medical devices for WWINN customers. Published in 2003, the ISO 13485 standard outlines the requirements for a comprehensive management system for designing and manufacturing medical devices. Medical devices can now be produced at the ESPS clean room facility (class 8) in Almelo, which was built as part of the extension of WWINN headquarters last year. An initial customer has commissioned production and a
second one is expected soon. ISO 13485 certification fits in with ESPS’s strategy to expand its activities, which will not only include service and productivity improvement, but sample and pre-production as well. This could help customers during their product development stage. It could also help if a customer cannot delay bringing their new product to market and wait for new equipment to be delivered to their own facilities because in this case ESPS can immediately proceed with production.

ESPS and FANUC Robotics Benelux recently signed a system integrator contract to underline their close collaboration. The contract allows ESPS to sell and install FANUC industrial robots. As an authorised FANUC system integrator, ESPS can increase its offering to include robotic system engineering and integration. FANUC Robotics is the world’s largest supplier of industrial robots and a leading provider of automation solutions, which cover a wide range of industries and applications, including aerospace, automotive, food, solar panel assembly and palletizing.

University of Twente spin-off company Medspray develops and produces unique spray nozzles for near mono-disperse aerosol devices, which enable targeted pulmonary drug delivery. All devices and spray nozzle units are based on proprietary technology that provides real improvements in aerosol performance and patient compliance as inhalation therapy becomes more effective and simple. For product validation and early production, IMS and INNLab have developed a production system based on the ProMicro Dial.
This new addition to the IMS product portfolio extends the successful ProMicro assembly platform with an optional dial table. This semi-automatic system offers the operator the option of loading parts and removing finished products in a continuous manner rather than in batches. IMS expects more customers for this solution. A ProMicro Dial will now be installed at Medspray’s site in the so-called High Tech Factory on the University of Twente campus in Enschede, the Netherlands. The operator can feed parts into the system, which are then laser-welded and checked by camera vision. Once removed from the assembly, the part is placed in the mouthpiece of the final product. The cycle time amounts to seven seconds. The next step for Medspray will involve high-volume production equipment based on IMS’s ProFast module.
This manufacturing Concept has been developed in Project 4 of High Tech Factory phase 1, funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the provinces Overijssel and Gelderland.

The agreement entails ESPS selling and implementing FullFact software for analysing production systems and visualising productivity losses.
