Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa June 2018

June is the month of our 8th Anniversary here at Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa. In June of 2010 we put out the first issue under our ownership and now June of 2018 marks the 97th issue. That to me is simply baffling to have been a “thing” for so many years, so many issues, so many pages, so many articles, so many photos, so many readers, so many new friends, so many advertisers, and so much fun. Don’t get me wrong, it is not all fun and games. It is not all awesome photoshoots and hanging out at rallies, runs, and bike nights. There is actually a ton of behind the scenes activity that has to happen to make this publication hit the shelves every month. We have to have a couple of very important things first of all just to make this a possibility, readers and sponsors. Without readers we would not have anyone to write to or to publish for. Without sponsors and advertisers of the magazine, we could not afford to give the readers something to check out month after month. We would like to thank our readers and our advertisers for doing what you do so that we can do what we do. What will the next eight years bring in the biker world of Iowa? Who the hell knows! I do know that we plan on being here doing what we do and keeping Iowa’s Biker Magazine, Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa, coming each and every month. Thanks for all of your support! June brings in the 2nd month of the 2018 Tall Corn Run. With the next month come 15 new spots to go to so that you can use your TCR card and Check In. The May sites listed on the TCR pages are now done for the year. Move on to June and get to those places to Check In up to once per day. The places that you can register to get a card if you need one or need a replacement are also listed on the Check In page in the magazine and online. They are marked with a Circle “R” just like in the past. These spots will have cards all year long as well as TRMI staffers will have cards and registration forms available as well. Get out and about, stop

in to the Check In sites, have some fun, and win some prizes! June also brings an explosion of events around and near Iowa. There are so many things going on each and every week that if you cannot find something to do in the two and three wheeled world, you must be way too picky. There seems to be something for everyone going on, and I know that there is more than one of the June weekends that we will be at multiple events. If you know of any confirmed events that are not on the TRMI FREE EVENT LISTING, or any confirmed bike nights that are not on the TRMI FREE BIKE NIGHT LISTING, email the information to me at Vernon@thunderroadsiowa.com Your input is appreciated and needed to keep the most comprehensive event and bike night listings complete. Thanks in advance. Pages 10-12 every month consist of the Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa Biker Friendly Directory. This listing is all of the brick and mortar business that help support Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa month after month. I ask that if you have not perused this list, that you check it out and darken their doors whenever you can. They support this Iowa magazine, and we ask that you support them. Tell them that TRMI sent ya. If you know of any sites that should be on those pages, feel free to have them give me a call or shoot me an email. We would love to grow the listing to include even more establishments of all kinds that welcome bikers with open arms. Vernon Quote of the month: “Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the bird is going to shit on the board and strut around like it won.” Author unknown

On the Cover We have a leggy beauty named Jessica, who straddling a 1948 Indian Chief owned by Harlan Hanks from Tipton. Mark and I were out at Sturgis last year, mixing our fun up with some CMA volunteer work. One particular night we had signed up to work the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum which is not a tough gig at all. One person stands between the gift shop and the museum on the main floor to make sure visitors have purchased tickets and the other person wanders the basement to make sure no one tries to testride one of the bikes out the back ramp. This night looked like it was going be a busy one since the regular hours were extending into an afterhours party that was open to the public. Of course, the food and drink staff had been given lanyards with passes so they could go in and out to set up their tables, grills, etc,. but I still had to screen the other visitors to make sure they had paid.

Matthew 7:21-23 gives an account of another bouncer. We’re told of a group of people who expect to enter into heaven based on what they have done, but in You never know who you’re going to see at Sturgis, spite of them and as one curly-haired blond gal went by with a staff providing their member, I said, “Shadow? Are you Shadow from good-deed list, Thunder Press?” She turned around, with a grin on her face. Caught! Of course, I had to tell her how we enjoy Jesus’s response reading her articles and she was friendly enough to visit is “I never knew you. Leave for a moment about her trip out before moving on. I me.” Not what they expected. was feeling pretty pleased with myself for recognizing “Wait – this is about knowing her when I snagged a little silver-haired lady who was Jesus? Not about going to church attempting to sail through without a stamped hand or a once a month and donating extra lanyard pass or anything. to the children’s cancer charity ride?” If that doesn’t up-end the idea most of us have “Excuse me, ma’am,” I said politely. “I see that you didn’t stop at the front desk to purchase your admission. about getting into heaven, then I don’t know what does. If you go back that direction, they’ll be glad to take your It’s so much easier to check things off a “to-do” list entry fee and stamp your hand.” She drew herself up to than to spend time getting to know someone who might then want to get all up in your business. But we cannot her full 4’10” and fixed me with an offended glare. “I don’t have to pay nothin’ to get in,” she said in a strong come to God through good works, only through good relationship. And the very first step is acknowledging Jersey accent. “I’m in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame!” And off she marched. I probably out-weighed her by 50 that mankind’s relationship with God was completely broken by Adam’s sin and that the only way back is pounds, but there was no way I was going to tackle her through Jesus’s sacrifice. Only after that are we able to again. She was a force of nature. develop a good relationship with Jesus. We do that much in the same way as we would develop a relationship with Eventually, our shift ended and Mark made his way back upstairs to find me. “Look who I got a picture of!” any person – we spend time listening to him speak (the Bible); we speak to him (prayer), and we spend time with he said, pulling out his phone. And there was my little silver-haired lady. Apparently, I had attempted to bounce his family, which is other Christians. none other than Gloria Struck, the biker beauty who had been the subject of one of David Uhl’s famous paintings; I don’t know about you, but when I arrive at the Pearly the woman who at 91 was out-riding people 30 years her Gates, I want the kind of reception Gloria got from Mark – she was recognized and warmly welcomed. It’s junior; the woman who had been a woman biker when a comfort to know that our future in heaven is not based there were no women bikers. what we do, but on the one who knows us – Jesus Christ. Of course, as soon as Gloria got to the bottom of the Blessings to you - Karla stairs and Mark laid eyes on her, he knew who she was. He spoke with her for a few minutes and she Mark & Karla Cornick are Area Reps with the Christian very graciously agreed to stand next to the David Uhl Motorcyclists Association. Find out more about CMA portrait so he could snap her picture. Slightly different and God’s plan for you at www.cmausa.org experience than I had! 6 - TRMI JUNE 2018

First Time Passenger

It’s that time of year again, everyone has their bike out, if the sun is out, then it’s time to ride. Now all these bikes roaming around pique the interest of everyone within earshot of the pipes. That being said…every hour of every day, someone, and somewhere is taking their first ride on two wheels. Enter the experienced rider, and you will inevitably be asked to take someone on their first ride on the back of a motorcycle. Keep in mind that it’s probably as scary for you as it is for them. Out there at the very end of the sub frame, the passenger actually has more influence on a bike’s dynamics than you, the rider. No need to worry though, follow these easy steps on how to prepare a passenger for their first motorcycle ride and you’ll both be good to go. First, riding gear is expensive and your passenger needs to be as protected, if not more protected than you are. There’s no easy solution here, as no one wants to buy a temporary passenger hundreds of dollars in gear. However, you can make sure that your temporary passenger is dressed for the ride…no shorts, no flip flops, and use any protective gear available that will fit. If you can’t meet those criteria, with comfort, with appropriate safety, then save the ride for another day. Next, give them a preparatory speech of sorts. Just the basics, “Sit still. If you have to move around, let me know, then do so when I give you the go-ahead. Moving our body weight is what steers the motorcycle. Just sit still. Always hold on tight. Whether it’s the grab rails or my waist, make sure that you feel secure. Be aware of braking and acceleration. In corners, just relax your body and stay in-line with the bike’s lean angle. If you’re scared, tap me. If you want to pull over, tap me.”

senger peg as a step stool, so be ready for that. Ask them to always, always, always wait for verbal confirmation that you’re ready before climbing on or off. The Dismount is also important, and this should always be to the left as well. Make sure the passenger knows they must get verbal confirmation that you’re ready before dismounting. Pull up to a firm, level surface, brace the bike between your legs while standing up over the seat and balance it while the passenger steps off.

If your temporary passenger becomes a frequent flyer, there are a few things to consider as well. Make sure he/she has the appropriate riding gear to use on all rides. Realize that your passenger is more prone to wind effect, cramping and boredom. On many bikes, the windshield deflects the airflow over the rider and into the passenger, who is often seated higher on the bike. Air pressure can strain the passenger’s back and leg muscles as he or she tries to fight the wind effect. Passengers may also get colder than the rider due to the wind chill. In addition, most passenger seats are not as comfortable as the front part of the saddle. Many of them strain the back and put the impact of bumps on the passenger’s tailbone. If you plan to bring along a passenger regularly, you might consider investing in a good aftermarket seat designed for both the rider’s and the passenger’s comfort. As the driver, remember that you have the constant mental stimulation of piloting the bike, so if your passenger needs more stimulation, give them a break off the bike every few hours to stretch his or her legs and break up any boredom that might have set in.

Riding two-up is a great way to share the experience of the open road, but it is important to remember that both the rider Finally, get on the bike. Sit on the bike, turn it on, and put and passenger play an important role in maintaining a safe and in in neutral. Stand up, with your legs spread wide and the fun riding experience. LHHD Rally Man it is good to be back on the road again. It was a long winter and the beginning of spring this year would not cooperate. This last weekend finally got me out for my first long ride. Also it was my first major event I rode to this year; Rally in the Hills is a new three day event featuring local and national bands, vendors, and camping. It is sponsored by Loess Hills Harley Davidson of Pacific Junction in Western Iowa next to the Missouri River and in the Heart of the Loess Hills. The site of the event was next to the dealership with some camping right behind. There is a nice grass area which was perfect for the vendors. Six months ago, I stopped at Loess Hills HD and being with the magazine, I checked in and chatted with Marketing Director, Bill Fisher. He let me in on a little secret that they were just starting to plan a rally next spring in May and gave me a copy of the Rally logo. He told me all the details had not been worked out yet and not to post anything or tell the public yet. I had the dates, May 3-5, and there is a motel one block away, so I reserved a room immediately. As time passed, the word got out and we started to watch the weather. The two weeks before the Rally was not looking good with cold, rain, and still snowing. The week before the dates, the weather forecast started to look good, finally but being Iowa and spring time, we always have to deal with rain. The first day of the rally, the bands Autograph and Slaughter were scheduled to play and since the weather forecast was showing severe storms setting in, Bill Fisher, whom had reluctantly become the Rally organizer, made the decision to cancel Thursday’s event. I was not planning on attending Thursday with my other job commitments so I left home early Friday morning. It was a nice day and the weekend looked great. I got to the motel, checked in and it was full. I was told I made the first reservation, imagine that.

At the Rally, the vendors were still setting up and the first band was scheduled to start at 4:00. It was more like a dealer open house to start with, they had demo bike rides and specials on HD merchandise and they were wheeling and dealing on used bikes, knocking off some major money calling it a Rally Special. I saw a window for a ride; after all, I was in the Loess Hills so I made a trip to Hamburg and had a hamburger at the Blue Moon Bar and Grill. When I got back, the band Sack of Lions had kicked off the day and it was starting to look like a Rally; there was a beer tent with $4 Tall Boys, the organization LUSCO Farm Donkey Rescue was raising money for their cause and had two donkeys in attendance, half a dozen food vendors selling everything from egg rolls to pizza, Other tents were selling biker head gear and BBQ grills, there was a guy in the parking lot doing pin striping and even had a guy doing chain saw carving like at the State Fair, with the Headliner band Saturday night being Jackyl, the joke going around was there might be dueling chainsaws. The headliner band Friday was Yelawolf, it was a high power new wave rock rap band, that sure had the crowd going. Now this was not Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

exactly my cup of tea, being old school, but I guess you can’t have old school without the new school crowd. I wonder if in 30 years from now they would be looking back reminiscing about their love for the engine of the past, the Milwaukee Eight as I do with the Shovelhead.

and stopped at The Back Forty Bar. Jesse asked Ray how he found this place and I had to butt in “they advertise in Thunder Roads“. The bar did a great job with that many people and we rode back to the Rally after 65 miles with Ray and Jesse. The band STR8SHOT was playing next was a great local band from Omaha called Rock’n Horse, followed by the Headliner, Jesse James Dupree & Jackyl, who made the night. Word is next year will be bigger and better. If you did not attend this year, you missed a good time. If you did not know about it, we at Thunder Roads will do everything we can to inform you of next year’s details. After all that is what we are all about, informing the local biker nation what is going on and where to go. So keep reading.

Saturday starts with a trip to Glenwood for breakfast and a hamburger at the local Buck Snort for lunch. Back at the Rally I hook up with Bill again and talk over the big ride of the day with the owner of Loess Hills HD Ray Croghan and front man of the band Jackyl, Jesse James Dupree. As the time neared they lined Ray’s and Jesse’s bike up and tucked me in right behind Jesse. We left the dealership and rode to Macedonia. The bike count total was 287. 99 counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 3 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of curiosity for our state of Iowa.

Woodbury County Woodbury County is located in the northwestern portion of Iowa. It boasts a population of over 102,000 residents inhabiting its 878 square miles (only 4.79 miles of that is water). The county seat is in Sioux City, which also happens to be the largest city in the county. Originally established in 1851 as Wahkaw County, in 1853 the name was changed to Woodbury County in honor of Levi Woodbury, a Senator and Governor of New Hampshire who later served as a Supreme Court justice. The first county seat of the old Wahkaw County was in Thompsonville, but after changing the county name, the county seat bounced to Sergeant Bluff, and finally came to rest in Sioux City in 1856. A portion of Woodbury County is owned by the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and is maintained as reservation land. To start our tour of this vast county, we breached the county line on K64 and made our first stop at TRMI supporters, Leather and Hawgs in

Hornick. Leather and Hawgs has got to be the one stop shop for all bikers in the area, as they have everything you need to travel on two wheels in this unpredictable Iowa weather! If you are ever in the area make sure you stop by Greg and Gerri’s Hornick location and tell them TRMI sent ya! Hornick is a small town with a population of only 225 people, but that’s not to shabby, as they only occupy a quarter mile of Woodbury County. Hornick sits on the floodplain of the Missouri River, near the edge of the beautiful Loess Hills. Additional creepy fact: Hornick was the filming location of the original Children of the Corn Movie in 1984. Swing by and see if you recognize any locations from the big screen! If you need to wet your whistle while you’re there, stop by Chances R Bar on Main Street and grab a cold one or some tasty pub grub before you roll out. From Hornick we buzzed east on 141 to Smithland. Like Hornick, Smithland has a population of only 224. It is proud to be one of the oldest settlements in Woodbury County. In 1857, fighting between settlers and Indians began in Smithland which would eventually culminate in the infamous Spirit Lake Massacre. The town is positioned near the Little Sioux River and has a total area of 0.37 square miles. From Smithland we continued east on 141 towards the slightly larger settlement of Danbury. Danbury is home to 348 residents and has two churches, one of the Catholic variety, and one of the Methodist variation. Danbury holds a fall celebration called Corn Days during harvest each year. The city’s name is in admiration of its founder, Daniel Thomas, and it spans a total area of 0.41 square miles, all of it land. If you are searching for sustenance in the area of Danbury, be sure to swing by Schrank’s Bar & Grill at 117 Main Street, and they can hook you up!

Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

Danbury pushed us north on L37 and east on D22, bringing us past Cushing, on our way to Correctionville. Correctionville is home to 821 residents on a mere 0.57 square miles. Correctionville has been noted for its unusual place name, which stems from the original survey of the town, and it is supposedly the longest single-word place name in the state of Iowa. Correctionville was platted in 1855. There are a couple of noteworthy places to stop in Correctionville, like Driftwood Pizza at 405 Driftwood Street if a piping hot slice is what you’re craving. Correctionville is also home to Club Casmo a little further down Driftwood if homestyle cooking is more your speed… either one is worth the stop when you are in town!

has a total area of 0.89 square miles for its residents to enjoy. John B McDermott is credited with naming the town of Moville after his birthplace in Moville, Ireland in 1868. Moville is home to the annual Woodbury County Fair, which attracts visitors and exhibits from all over the state. Grandstand events attract the largest crowds, and include Iowa favorites like tractor pulls, musical performances, and demolition derbies. The town also hosts an annual Moville Days celebration in the beginning of June. Grab a drink at Jeff’s Bar Too on East Frontage Road, or a bite to eat at Misty’s Restaurant on Main Street, they are both overflowing with small town hospitality, and welcome everyone through their doors.

From Moville we grabbed a chunk of Highway 20 again and pushed east past Lawton on our way to the county seat of Sioux City. Sioux City currently has a population of 82,700, which makes it the fourth largest city in Iowa. The bulk of the city is in Woodbury County, though a small portion is in Plymouth County. Often the city and surrounding area is referred to as Siouxland and is home to several cultural points of interest including the Sioux City Public Museum, Sioux City Art Center and Sergeant Floyd Monument, which is a National Historical Landmark. Historically, the Sioux City area has been a busy place. The area was originally inhabited by Yankton Sioux when it was first reached Next, we hopped back on D22 by Spanish explorers and French and sped west and a short jaunt fur trappers in the 18th century. north on L25 to Pierson. Insert cool military fact here: The 185th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) of the Iowa Air National Guard operates KC-135R Stratotankers out of Sioux Gateway Airport, which is located just west of Sergeant Bluff. Sergeant Bluff has a killer Mexican joint called Alicia’s Taco Dome on Gaul Drive if you are ever in the area. If you are on more of an historical journey through the city, there many options there as well, but a few mustsee stops in the area are the Sioux City Public Museum (Hours: Tuesday Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Free Admission) at 607 4th Street, featuring a state-of-the-art facility in downtown with hands-on exhibits and interactive displays of local and regional history. The Sergeant Floyd River Museum & Welcome Center (Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. daily Free Admission) at 1000 Larsen Park Road. This is a dry-docked boat serving as a welcome center for the tri-state area and a historical museum featuring Missouri River history. And finally, the Peirce Mansion. The mansion is a newly restored Victorian-era mansion available for rental events such as weddings, receptions, corporate gatherings, family reunions, private parties or photo shoots at 2901 Jackson Street. There is no end to the time you can spend exploring Sioux City, and we had to pry ourselves away from the city, and one of our favorite stops, Jitters Café at 4021 Floyd Blvd, where you will find fabulous coffee drinks and the best damn donuts we have ever eaten!

At this point, we decided to make a continued trek south, and K45 would bring us through a few more stops. First was the town of Salix, home to just under 400 people, but a great place for the outdoorsy type. Nearby you will find both Snyder Bend County Park and Brown’s Lake/Bigelow County Park… both great places to stretch your legs or set up camp for a little longer reprieve. Continuing south, we ran smack into Sloan. Sloan is a gambling mecca in this part of the state and has Now, Sioux City had not given up all of her local the buffets and casino/resorts to prove it! 8 Tips,

after a crash

Motorcycle accidents, though not necessarily more frequent than other types of accidents, are more likely to result in serious injury or death. Statistics continue to show that for every mile traveled on our nation’s roadways, there are considerably more deaths from motorcycle accidents than from car accidents. This fact alone makes it imperative for motorcyclists to learn about the most frequent causes of accidents and then use this information to reduce their level of risk. Here are some of the most common accidents that occur involving two wheel travel. First, Motorcycles in Head-On Collisions. Crashes involving motorcycles and other vehicles account for numerous motorcycle accident deaths ever year. In the vast majority of these accidents, the car strikes the motorcycle from the front. Head-on collisions between a car and motorcycle are often fatal to the motorcyclist and passengers. Second, Cars Making Left-Hand Turns. Everyone on two wheels has heard of this situation, as it is the single most dangerous situation for motorcyclists, and occurs when cars are making left-hand turns. Usually, the turning car strikes the motorcycle when the motorcycle is going straight through an intersection, passing the car, or trying to overtake the car. These types of accidents are common between two cars as well, but the motorcycle’s smaller size makes it less visible than another cage to the turning vehicle. Motorcycles that pass cars within the same lane are even more vulnerable, as cage drivers don’t expect this, and are often caught off guard by such motorcycle maneuvers. Almost always, a vehicle that hits another vehicle while making a left-hand turn will be found at fault for the accident. However, be aware that if the motorcyclist was speeding or in the wrong lane, the motorcyclist may be found partly at fault for the accident. Next, Motorcyclist Speeding and Alcohol Use. About half of the accidents involving a single motorcycle are caused by speeding or alcohol use. This statistic is not surprising and these factors play a large role in accidents among cars and other vehicles as well. However, because motorcycles don’t provide much protection to the rider, crashes involving speeding or alcohol are much more likely to result in death or serious injury. And as we all know, annual fun runs and poker runs are no strangers to these accidents, as all too often riders partake too much at run stops, putting themselves and others at a higher risk of injury or death.

a serious safety threat to motorcycles. Early in the riding season these road hazards seem to be everywhere, as spring rains have not thoroughly cleaned roadways after the winter season, and agricultural debris is found everywhere as farmers are busy getting crops planted. Don’t forget grass clippings either, as they are a commonly seen hazard as well. So what do you do if you find yourself involved in one of these situations despite your best attempt at riding safely? Well our friends at Walker, Billingsley, and Bair have a few suggestions for you. They tell us that there are 8 common mistakes that Iowans make when they are involved in or injured in an accident, that they don’t want you to make. They are as follows: 1.Tell your doctor EVERYTHING that hurts…don’t leave anything out! 2. Continue to treat injuries…don’t leave gaps in your treatment, follow up with your doctor, or in the eyes of the insurance company, you are fully recovered. 3. Follow your doctor’s orders. 4. Be careful what you say…insurance companies will use your words against you, so tell the truth, no matter what. 5. Keep a diary and wage loss record. 6. DO NOT hide past accidents or injuries from your attorney. 7. DO NOT misrepresent your activity level…insurance companies regularly hire private investigators to conduct surveillance on people involved in claims. 8. Review and understand documents before you decide if you will sign them…always seek legal advice before signing settlements to ensure you receive fair compensation. To request further information go to www.iowainjured.com

Finally, Road Hazards Facing Motorcyclists. Motorcycles face higher dangers from road hazards than do cars and other vehicles. Due to the smaller size and less stable nature of the motorcycle, potholes, dead animals, slick pavement conditions, uneven heights between lanes, and other irregularities or unexpected objects in the road pose 32 - TRMI JUNE 2018

Yea, because they are NOT designing this program to target you and I, the ones that already know and understand the freedom of the road, the wind in our face, the pure unadulterated joy of cracking a throttle, a curvy, smooth road with no damn deer in sight. You, the machine the open road! We know the drill, we get it, we love it and we love to find people that also love what we do.

Harley Davidson

needs to find more of those types too. A lot and they are running out of time.

The industry, the lifestyle as we know of is running out of time. The reasons, well, one of them, that the only way we hear about this social media program is it spills over into

afford bikes, they are living at home longer, break down the situation economically, but there is a much bigger picture at play and it’s all our fault We created this “safe culture” where kids can’t get dirty, can’t play in the mud, can’t take time out to try stupid shit and see what would happen.

When riding a bike, where is the trophy? Many people these days won’t do anything for the sheer JOY of doing something if there isn’t a payoff and it’s the trophy generation on many levels. So many young people were educated that if you do something, in this safe, protected environment, you will be rewarded with your participation with an award! Usually the reward was for just showing up, and showing “good sportsmanship”. Because everybody is special and the key is to keep everybody safe.

our world via Instagram or Facebook, but with the way they SHOULD be targeting this social media campaign, it should be spillover only. The target they are going after, don’t not only OWN Harley’s but likely don’t really ride at all. The younger generation just doesn’t swing a leg over ride bikes, bikes are dangerous. The people and ride a brand new bike. Want to talk about the reasons? that ride bikes are dangerous, because they look mean, Okay, let’s touch on just a couple. First and foremost, look they wear leather and you know how you get leather don’t at the price of a new bike. Whatever the entry point is, you! You kill cows! COW KILLERS. Well, cows also have

steak under the leather, so in order to get to the delicious steak, we have to remove the outer layer of chaps, vests, gloves, seats, whatever we need just get me to that steak!

All

we have done is tell the following generations that everything in life will kill you! Can’t play with Yard Darts, must wear seat belts, you need to be in the car seats all the time, drawers had safety locks, outlets plugged with covers, always wear a helmet on your bicycle, parks removed merry-go-rounds, seesaws and don’t swing to high or swim after you eat because you will likely get cramps and the drain at the bottom of the pool will pull you to the bottom and you can’t be saved!

When a generation educated over and over the all things are dangerous, suddenly we wonder, why aren’t

the success over one summer. Not a chance. They, HD, trying to change a culture, the kind of culture I mentioned and that times time, they might get a very small uptick in sales, let’s hope, for not only them, but the entire industry is dying and dying quickly. Fewer bikes are being sold to existing customers and fewer and fewer new, first time buyers are buying as well. Simple math.

Again

, I hope this works and for our part, we need to look at what we do to help the cause, not just Harley, but our passion. Don’t wave a finger at them young whipper snappers and tell them about how it was “back in my day”, spend some time, talking about how great it is to be a rider. While you’re at it, make sure they stop using that garbage ranch on wings! Todd “Crash” Davis

they buying motorcycles and joining us? Continued P42 We created this culture and it’s partially our fault we have done a terrible job of passing out passion down to them.

My marketing instinct appalled the move Harley Davidson is undertaking. Send 8-10 interns out, put them on bikes and do what that generation does. I dunno, nor do I care, it shouldn’t be what I love to do or where I love to go, maybe our paths would cross, who knows. But their campaign will be or should be hyper targeted to that generation, on whatever platform is used to hyper serve that target demo and you will not be able to judge

On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, there are events to commemorate the service of Vietnam Veterans. Many public buildings and private citizens fly the American flag on this day. It’s a great day to thank a Vietnam veteran for their service or buy them a meal. All around the country, there are commemorative events, speeches, ceremonies and luncheons.

The Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC is the home of the 53,318 names of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the Vietnam War and their country. The traveling replica of this wall will be in Newton at the Maytag Park from May 30 to June 3, 2018. Come visit and pay respect and honor those brave men and women if you can. It is an experience you will never forget.

On this day, March 29, I had the honor of attending the On February 26, 1974, a declaration was issued urging the ceremony at the Jasper County people of the United States to Courthouse in Newton, Iowa. It was not a particularly warm commemorate March 29, 1974, as National Vietnam War day and was very Veterans Day. Under this declaration, windy. It was still a government officials urge public buildings, civic and great patriotic organizations to fly the U.S. flag to give turnout with their support. As time passed, public sentiment about veterans, family of Vietnam veterans began to soften. While many veterans killed in still viewed the war as wrong, they now felt that veterans action and friends. were just doing their duty to their country. On The American March 28, 2017, President Trump signed the Vietnam War Legion Post 111, Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. This Bill Honor Guard, amended Title 4 of the U.S. Code to encourage the flying and the Newton Legion Riders were also there to pay tribute to those who survived and those that sacrificed with their lives defending the United States. March 29 marks the day in 1973 when combat and combat support units were ordered to withdraw from South Vietnam. Generations later, veterans of this time period are gaining the respect that was not so freely given upon their return stateside. It left an indelible mark on the American psyche. There were over 58,000 American soldiers killed, never to return home. Those that did return home found a country divided over the debate of the war. Many veterans had difficulty readjusting to civilian life and many did not receive any recognition for their service or were outright protested against. On this day of recognition, Jasper County Treasurer and veteran, Doug Bishop, and Jasper County VA Director, Kurt Jackson, spoke about sacrifice, family and the veterans that never returned home. The names of all the Jasper County veterans were read and recognized. This was also the 50th Anniversary of the Tet Offensive. This was one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam War. 46 - TRMI JUNE 2018

of the American Flag on this day every year. The Vietnam War was a divisive time for the United States. I, for one, am overjoyed that veterans are finally getting the recognition for their service, which is why commemorating this holiday is so important. So if you see a veteran, thank him, shake his hand, buy him a meal, etc. Veterans are the reason that you have the freedoms you have today and make this the greatest country on earth. and was well on his way to helping build the second year when he was tragically killed in seco motorcycle accident on October 2, 2012. a mo

Back in early 2012, we were planning our ur ets winter show season and what swap meets nd and bike shows we were going to hit and set up for Thunder Roads Magazine of as Iowa and I got a phone call. The call was from a railroader from eastern Iowa that had seen a copy of the magazine somewhere in his travels. He and some coworkers of his were planning a ride, and wanted to get some stuff in Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa about it. As this is our business, we were happy to appease the group and we were interested in hearing more about it.

The idea id behind the run that Kirk was so passionate about was because of his fellow railroader, Joey Droste and his wife Shelby losing their daughter Maggie. The first run was to raise awareness and funds for Trisomy 18, the condition that took Maggie’s life after only three hours on this earth. Trisomy 18, also known as Edward’s syndrome, is a condition which is caused by an error in cell division, known as meiotic disjunction. Trisomy 18 occurs in about 1 out of every 2,500 pregnancies in the United

Before we got to talking too much, I gathered his railroad background, and gathered his eastern Iowa roots, but other

States, about 1 in 6,000 live births. The first run was a success, and the group realized they had something special here, and wanted to keep the fire burning and make the event bigger and

than that, I did not know a lot about this cat. I did know that the railroaders always seemed to be many things. They seemed to always like to tell a story, always liked to have fun, always liked to enjoy their time off the tracks, and were always loyal to those around them. This guy sure fit the bill on all of these counts, and that became very evident as time went on. These first few conversations I had with this guy were interesting to say the least. This is how I met the late Kirk Kempter.

better then next year.

Kirk grew to be an awesome friend in short amount of time. “Tater” as he was also referred to, helped us out that winter at show season, and he helped get the Sleeping Angels Fun Run established. He was with us from Central Iowa to Cedar Rapids at shows spreading the word about both TRMI and Sleeping Angels. Kirk made it a good time wherever he was. The first Sleeping Angels Fun Run was held in Boone on April 14th, 2012 and Kirk was there with bells on

They did just that more in the subsequent years, as the Sleeping Angels Fun Run just completed their 7th annual event. The ride has grown, the group has grown, and the cause has grown. Joey and the group established the Sleeping Angels Foundation and have official 501(c) 3 status. The fundraising efforts are now geared toward making varying monetary donations to families. The donations depend on the individual family’s needs and can be for headstone costs, funeral

costs, vacation to get away, child care for other children affected, grief counseling, etc. Since no one’s situation is the same, the director and officers of the Sleeping Angels Foundation evaluate on a case by case basis and determine what would help the family the most. Many of the board of directors of the Sleeping Angels Foundation have become good friends of TRMI, and they are simply great people doing wonderful things for families in need. For the run this year on May 5th, we were right there with them again on a ride that was around 500 motorcycles and trikes, and raised almost $31,000 for the Foundation. The run started at Toby K’s Event center in Boone, with an 11:00 KSU time with the first stop being in Boxholm at the Lucky Donkey. From there we rode to Lehigh to the Riverside Tap, and then to Webster City to C&C American Tap. After that third stop, the run went back to Boone for the rest of the day’s events. The auction, food, band, and lots of fun at the event center finished up another successful event. The day featured some great north central Iowa riding, longer runs between stops with fewer stops for the day, and a lot of time to hang out and ride with friends. Nothing could have made the day any better. The Foundation also does other events including a golf tournament to help their cause. You can check them out at sleepingangelsfoundation.com or find them on Facebook. Look for their ride the first part of next May, and maybe come along on a ride with hundreds of new and old friends, and a couple of guardian angels. Vernon

Kue’ d Smokehouse 245 E Hickman Road Waukee, IA 50263 515-987-4972 Monday – Saturday: 11am – 8pm, Sunday: Closed Welcome to Food School!!!! Now, class… where does Iowa rank in beef production in the United States? Bueller, Bueller. The answer is 7th. Now, class, how about pork? Nice guess but its numero Uno!!!! Ol’ number 1!!! (don’t agree with those stats? They gotta be true, I found them on the interwebs!!!) See, not only are my articles entertaining but they are educational as well! (I learnt good in school!!!!)

and plaques as a testament to his pit mastery!!! However, the best testament of all to his prowess is to taste the meats!!!! Holy crap, is the meat good!!!! Seasoned and slow smoked to perfection!!! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!!! Meats are ordered by ¼ pound increments and ribs are ordered by number. The meat comes with Honey Potato Bread and Kue’d Pickles. I like to use the bread to make a sandwich out of whatever kind(s) of meat I order. The only problem is the meat is so tender that it’s sometimes hard to get slices of it onto the bread without it falling apart!!!! (those are the kinds of problems I love!!!!) On the table you’ll find a selection of their own sauces to adorn your chosen meat. I’ll not make a recommendation because I have yet to settle on a favorite! The Kue’d Pickles are of the dill variety with a little bite to them in the aftertaste. I like to eat them separately. The sides are all homemade and very good. They even have some old home favorites that you don’t normally encounter like Apple Crisp, for instance. (Which was very tasty I might add!!!) The menu changes slightly by the seasons so you may not find your favorite side dish available every time you stop but rest assured it will be replaced by something just as good if not better! Lynnette and I have eaten here several times since we discovered it and have always found the service to be awesome!!! Everyone is super friendly and helpful!!! Kue’d Smokehouse - it is definitely a cut above!!!! They do warn you to get there early because they smoke their meat early and serve until it’s gone. Their moto is “When it’s gone it’s gone!”

Now knowing that we rank that high in livestock production it’s no surprise that there are many barbeque eateries around. You see, you can’t raise items to feed the world without sampling the goods from time to time. Then the experimentation begins with creating different rubs and sauces to compliment the meat. The next logical progression is a competition where your meat raising, cooking and seasoning skills are pitted against others. (you see, deep down inside we are all competitors and everybody knows that 2nd place is the first loser!!!!) Once you win in competition then the next logical step is to open a restaurant because if your goods are good enough to win over the judges they are sure to be good enough to put some spare change in your pocket!!! And WALLA a new barbeque joint is born!!!!

Give them a “Like” on Facebook and check out their website at www.KuedSmokehouse. com. Also, they do catering, so keep them in mind if you have any events coming up that you need catered! Until next time… Ride Safe and Eat Hearty! Craig & Lynnette P.S. If you know of someplace to check out in your neck of the woods shoot me an email at craig@thunderroadsiowa. com

Now I’m not sure that’s the actual progression that originated Kue’d Smokehouse in Waukee but parts of it are true. For instance the winning of contests. Shad Kirton, the owner and operator of Kue’d Smokehouse is the TLC BBQ PITMASTERS SEASON 2 WINNER!!!!! Also the walls of his restaurant are full of pictures and ribbons and trophies 50 - TRMI MARCH 2018

Groups interested in joining NCOM can do so at no cost. “Free” in this day and age makes most people immediately start looking for the an cipated “catch” but gaining access to NCOM’s resources truly does not require payment of any membership fees. Instead, the coali on is backed financially by a network of motorcycle injury lawyers. The goal and purpose of NCOM is “to assist all motorcycle organiza ons and individual riders with legal, legislave and other motorcycling issues through such free services as legisla ve assistance, na onwide communica ons network, legal counsel, public awareness & motorcycle safety projects and other important services.” If you are part of a group interested in becoming a suppor ng member of NCOM email aim@onabike.com or go to the AIM website. Each year NCOM holds a conven on, bringing together hundreds of people in the motorcycle world, and the motorcycle rights movement to address current events and obstacles facing the motorcycle world. This year was the 33rd annual NCOM Conven on, held in Mobile Alabama from May 10th – 13th. The conven on not only is the loca on where motorcycle clubs and legisla ve groups meet to discuss biker rights and how to preserve them, but daily there are seminars of varying topics. This year the topics included a presenta on by our own Iowa Superman, Slider Gilmore, tled “What Successful People Do”.

Once upon a me there were bikers. Bikers who had li le support from society outside of their own brotherhood. Bikers who were le to fend for themselves legally and legisla vely…bikers who were discriminated against based on li le more than the fact that they traveled on two wheels. Enter NCOM, an organiza on comprised of numerous motorcycle rights associaons and clubs working together to empower and support the biker community as a whole. The Na onal Coali on of Motorcyclists (NCOM) was established in 1986 in Las Vegas when motorcycle groups and leaders from around the country gathered together, driven by the need to create a voice responsible to defend the rights of bikers everywhere. Now, a er more than 30 years, NCOM con nues to give power to both riders and motorcycle organiza ons through many resources and has expanded to include hundreds of thousands of riders and thousands of member organiza ons from all over the United States. Fundamentally, this is an associaon a er our own hearts. As you know, TRMI proudly boasts “About Iowa, For Iowa, From Iowa” on every issue. While we represent the state of Iowa through our publica on, we support the biker community as a whole in our very beings. This organiza on is no different, as NCOM is proud to be created and maintained “By Bikers, For Bikers”. There is a Na onal Council which is designed to enable na onwide communica on and is comprised of one member from each par cipa ng organiza on. According to the NCOM website, “Motorcycle rights leaders represen ng 11 regions make up its Board of Advisors. The group also contains a Legisla ve Task Force that includes state legislators, advocates, and a United States Senator.” 54 - TRMI JUNE 2018

home me Bill Clinton started jogging near his ho in Chappaqua, New York. But on each run he happened to jog past a hooker standing on the same street corner, day after day. With some apprehension he would brace himself as he approached her for what was most certainly to follow. “Fifty dollars!” she would cry out from the curb. “No, Five dollars!” fired back Clinton. This ritual between een n Bill and the hooker continued for days. ays ys.. He’d run by and she’d yell, “Fifty dollars!” And he’d yell back, “Five dollars!” One day however, Hillary decided that she wanted to accompany nyy her husband on his jog! As the jogging ing couple neared the problematic streett corner, Bill realized the “pro” would bark her $50 offer and Hillary would wonder what he’d really been doing on all his past outings. He realized he should have a darn good explanation for the former Secretary of State. As they jogged into the turn that would take them past the corner, Bill became even more apprehensive than usual. Sure enough, there was the hooker! Bill tried to avoid the prostitute’s eyes as she watched the pair jog past. Then, from the sidewalk, the hooker yelled...”See what you get for five bucks!?”

This guy is sitting at home alone when he hears a knock on the front door. There are two sheriff’s deputies there; he asks if there is a problem. One of the deputies asks if he is married, and if so, can he see a picture of his wife? The guy says “sure” and shows him a picture of his wife. The sheriff says, “I’m very sorry sir, but it looks like your wife’s been hit by a truck.” The guy says, “I know, but she has a great personality and she’s an excellent cook.”

One day a brunette, a redhead and a blonde decide to go through their daughter’s purses. So, the brunette goes through her daughter’s purse and finds cigarettes. She says, “Oh my god, I’m so ashamed! My Daughter smokes.” So, the redhead goes through her daughter’s purse and finds an empty can of beer. She says, “Oh my god I’m so ashamed! My daughter drinks.” So, finally, it’s the blondes turn and she finds a used condom. She says, “Oh my god I’m so ashamed! My daughter has a penis.” There’s a big guy like 7 feet tall and he has a head the size of an orange. He walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a drink. The bartender can’t resist asking so he goes, “You’re a big guy, why do you have such a small head?” So the guy says, “Well I was walking down the beach one day and I saw a lamp, I rubbed it and a genie appeared. She said you have one wish. So I said will you have sex with me? The genie said, “Sorry, genies can’t do that”. So then I said “how about a little head?” One day an old man sat down on a bench and across the street he saw a little boy sitting on the curb. The old man sat and watched him and saw that he was holding a cat by the tail and had candy in his hand. Every few minutes, the little boy would pop a few pieces of candy in his mouth, bite the cat on the tail, and scoot down a little bit. After the man watched the little boy for a few minutes he walked over and asked the little boy what he was doing. The little boy replied, “I’m playing truck driver!” “Playing truck driver?” the man asked. “Yeah, I’m popping pills, eating pussy, and moving on down the line!”

a Scotsman walks up with bagpipes. He sits them down and the octopus fumbles with it for a minute and sits it down with a confused look. “Ha!” the Scot says. “Can’t you play it?” The octopus looks up at him and says, “Play it? I’m going to screw it as soon as I figure out how to get its pajamas off.” An elderly couple scheduled their annual medical examination the same day so they could travel together. After the examination, the doctor then said to the elderly man “You appear to be in good health, do you have any medical concerns that you would like to discuss with me?” “In fact I do,” said the man, “After I have sex with my wife for the first time, I am usually hot and sweaty. And then, after I have sex with my wife the second time, I am usually cold and chilly.” “This is very interesting,” replied the doctor, “Let me do some research and get back to you.” After examining the elderly lady, the doctor said: “Everything appears to be fine. Do you have any medical concerns that you would like to discuss with me?” The lady replied that she had no questions, nor concerns. The doctor then asked: “Your husband had an unusual concern. He claims that he is usually hot and sweaty after having sex the first time with you and then cold and chilly after the second time. Do you know why?” “Oh that old coot!” She replied. “That’s because the first time is usually in July, and the second time is usually in December!” Two guys were walking down the street when they saw two dogs humping. One said, “I wonder how much liquor it would take to get my wife to do it that way”. So they made a bet of 10 bucks on whose wife would do it on the lease amount of liquor. After a week they met in a bar. “Well”, said the first guy “How much liquor did it take”. “A pint of whiskey”, replied the other guy. The first guy said “You win; It took me a whole bottle just to get her out in the yard.”

There once was this lady who was a big fan of B.B. King. The Motorcycle Cannonball Run has become one of the most incredible antique motorcycle events in the world, and the 2018 Cannonball guarantees to carry on that tradition. With this year presenting its own new set of challenges, as the Run takes its annual transcontinental route on its most northern path to date. Not to mention, running from September 8th to the 23rd across the northern portion of the U.S. may put you in some chilly spots, especially when crossing the likes of Bear Tooth Pass in the Rocky Mountains. According to motorcyclecannonball.com, “This northern route could certainly include all types of weather; from tropical storms and 90-degree temperatures in the East to freezing temperatures and snow in the mountains of the North.” September days will be starting to get shorter, but riders should still have around 12 hours of daylight in which to cover an average of 250 miles per day. Not an easy task on pre-1929 classic motorcycles…no heated gear to fend off inclimate weather, or nicely padded seats to cushion the old rear end. All bikes will run the same route, which is estimated that less than 10 miles of the entire 3,649 mile long, 13 state route will be run on interstate highways, and less than 1 mile of that will be on urban interstates. Despite the challenges the 2018 route will bring to riders, owner Jason Sims says, “We’ll cover some of the best riding areas in the country. It’s going to be a difficult trip and we’ll have a lot of long days and hard riding.” The field will include a wide range of antique motorcycle brands, many that have been deemed extinct for decades, according to event organizers.

atures. Lastly, braking systems may be upgraded from one wheel systems to two-wheeled, disc brake systems in the interest of safety. Even with these modern day upgrades to the motorcycles, this ride is going to be far from the comfort rides we all enjoy today…no heated seats and blue tooth tunes to keep you in the comfort zone. Just a bumpy ride, enjoying some of the most scenic views in the northern United States, while making your way to the finish line. This definitely won’t be a ride for the faint of heart. It is a grueling journey, hard on the body and mind, and ultimately satisfying to the soul. Don’t forget to take a ride to Anamosa on September 13th or Spirit Lake on September 14th to see the riders in one of these two overnight Iowa towns on the route. Melanie J Schwarte

Now, while motorcycles must be and appear original in nature, there are a few modifications that are thankfully allowed considering the terrain, and possible weather hazards of the 2018 route. Riders may increase the motorcycle’s fuel capacity to ensure further travel between fueling stops. Also, modern wheels are acceptable (must look period correct as much as possible) with beaded type tires instead of clincher tires, this will certainly come in handy should any snowfall occur in mountain passes along the way. Next, electrical charging systems including generators or alternators and batteries can be added…most helpful in any less than desirable temper-

I had some family drama at my shack the other night, overnight guests! The only thing I truly enjoyed about the entire ordeal is what I am about to share with you. You see when there are overnight guests in the house and only 1 bathroom sometimes letting the dog out first thing in the morning makes me blue with envy. Anyway, I decided the only sensible thing to do was to join the dog in the ritual of marking our territory. As me and the dog stumbled around looking for a discreet location, out of the wind, I came across a dandelion, so I aimed for it and shot at it. I can’t remember the last time a weed made me so damn happy. In my sick mind, if the dandelions have migrated back to Iowa it must be riding season. So, I wiped the backsplash off my boots and fired up the two-wheeler. I don’t know about the fan club I have at Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa, but every spring, one of the first places I like to ride to is the Freedom Rock. I have heard some stuff about these Freedom Rocks eventually being placed in every county in Iowa and I have even managed to see a few of them. But for this ride, I am referring to the original Freedom Rock. Just south of I-80 a couple of miles exit 83 I believe. It is a big ass boulder and each year it represents heroes from our past, men and women that have served in our military, painted fresh yearly by a guy named Bubba! Now don’t let the name fool you, in the Iowa riding community Bubba seems to be a common name and most of the time with a name like Bubba the only talent you have is storing snacks in your beard. Not this Bubba, he can paint.

Speaking of this country’s freedoms, I’m sure many of you have heard about all the gun BS going on lately. Now I don’t speak for all bikers in Iowa but the ones I do speak for love guns and everything about them. Maybe my friends just have some sick addiction with blowing shit up and huffing gun powder. Anyway, there is a lot of talk about gun laws and banning certain types of guns and possibly even taking guns away from us. The part I don’t understand is there are a certain group of people ok I will just call them degenerates wanting to control our guns. I figure a steady hand and a firm grip is all the gun control I will ever need. This group of powerful degenerates keep blah blah blahing that by taking away my right to bear arms, a right that many Americans have given their blood for, they will keep me safe from criminals! Well, apparently, these pussies don’t have the same bulge in their britches that I do. You see with the load that I am packing, I have never felt unsafe around criminals and I tend to hang out with a few. Taking away my guns will make me feel unsafe and I’m really beginning to wonder who the true criminals are in this debate. And if these powerful degenerates think that banning a certain type or types of gun is going to keep the criminals from having them, they need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid! My sick brain isn’t always on high beam but there is something seriously wrong with that thought process.

The whole thing makes me very suspicious, and it sort of pisses me off. The more they talk about keeping me safe, the more riding time I waste standing in line at Anyway, every year Bubba paints this boulder in the gun store to pay. It’s unbelievable! I’m starting to appreciation of the freedom that our military personnel think I should vote for these degenerates just to keep have fought and died for. Some bikers like to kick off them in office, then open up a gun shop! the riding season with a blessing of the bikes, I like to kick start my season by riding to the original Freedom Ride Free Rock and paying my respect not only to Bubba’s Shifty LaRue generosity but to the Veterans of this country that have kept us free. 62 - TRMI JUNE 2018

How old do you need to be to start making an impact in this world? You would think that at any age you could. Well, the truth is the younger generation thinks that you really don’t start making an impact on anyone until il you are married or have kids. My y name is Kaylie Adams and I would like to share my story which shows that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can start making g an impact at any age as long as you put your mind i d to t it! I am 20 years old and I am the youngest Motorcycle Safety Rider Coach in Iowa. It all started when my dad decided to start making an impact on young motorcyclist. When he became a Rider Coach for ABATE of Iowa he brought me along to help out at some of the classes. I was 15 years old when I started to help out at some of the Basic Rider Classes. Being at some of these classes I noticed that a lot of women took the class for many different reasons, but the main reason was to learn to ride. A lot were very nervous and cautious when riding a motorcycle. I can’t blame them though because when the class is run by men and more men are taking the class it makes you second guess yourself. Though a lot of the coaches work very well with them and help them become comfortable, I felt that there was something more that I could do. Not only could I help the women become more comfortable, but to help the younger generation become a part of something greater. So, I decided to start my journey to become a Motorcycle Safety Rider Coach!

order to make an even bigger difference. That is when I decided to become a Rider Coach for ABATE of Iowa. One thing I started to see is that not all coaches were teaching for the right reasons and it teachin was affecting some of the students. Now, as a wasn’t allowed to say anything so I range aid I w took the next step to becoming a Rider Coach through the class to become one. I and went throu am hoping that this riding season I will be able to both help make the program better by being a good coach and learning from my students as much as they will learn from me, but also help women feel more confident and to show the younger generation that they can start making an impact now! I believe that if you want to do something you should get out there and do it! Riding motorcycles is something I love and I try my hardest to get the younger generation involved with motorcycles. I started making an impact at 15 and I’m 20 years old now and I am ready to make an even bigger impact on my students this riding season! So, come on! Take a class! Who knows I might be there! Kaylie Adams

I talked to my dad to see what I could do to impact both women and the younger generation and that’s when we came up with me becoming a range aid. This meant that I would go help with all these motorcycle safety classes. I became what most coaches call a cone fairy. I moved all the cones around for all the riding exercises and was like a teacher’s assistant. After my first year of that I started to notice a difference in all the classes I was helping with not only were the women become more comfortable but so were the younger generation! But as the years went on I realized that I needed to step up in
