June is always the month that the he even ev event ven entt iivvitie ittiees. s. listing simply explodes with activities. The April showers should be finished, niish hed d, the May flowers have peaked, and nd the roads are finally cleaned off with some rain. I am sure theree will still be some issues with roadway repairs after an extremely harsh winter, but June is always the month with more things to do than time available. On the he he Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa wa wa FREE event list that is in the back ck of every magazine, and gets posted d every week on Facebook, there are more events in June that any other month of the year. If you want to go on a run, go to a rally, attend an open house, get your ride blessed at one of the bike blessings, or just enjoy hitting more than one event per day, then June is the month for you. I know that we love to get out to as many events as we can, and June is always a challenge, but we will sure keep trying to hit them all! Get out and about, ride safe, enjoy the events, and start getting some miles racked up for the riding season. As we leave the month of May in the rear view mirror, we cannot forget about May being Motorcycle Safety Month. We know as riders that we need to be as safe as possible every mile on two wheels, but sometimes it gets forgotten by not just riders, but by the general traveling public. We hate to see the reports of motorcycles down, and hate even more to see when there is a fatality from a bike crash. We need to be vigilant and be as safe as possible. We need to ride safe, ride straight, keep the shenanigans to a minimum while riding, and not over imbibe when out on runs. Although cars causing crashes is a significant portion of the motorcycle issues every year, single vehicle motorcycle crashes caused by the riders actions are a big part of the statistics. We need to work to lessen these types of motorcycle crashes caused by riders by being safer ourselves. We need to watch out for those around us on two wheels and make sure everyone riding around us is riding safely. We need to be good stewards of our passion and keep as many of us alive and on two wheels as possible. We also need to keep up the social media postings and yard signs and such to remind the public that we are here on two wheels, and that they need to watch out for us. To me, this two pronged approach of looking internally for

rriders ri iders deers to to be be as a safe as possible and also reminding reem miind din n the travelling public that we are aarre here here re and they NEED to watch out for us fo for us is paramount to the success of llessening of e motorcycle injuries and fatalities. Let’s all be a part an and of a year around push for motorcycle safety. June is also the month of our TRMI anniversary. June J nee of 2010 was the first issue Ju of of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa Iowa after taking over from Joe Io Matthews. So we have 9 years’ worth of magazines now under our belt, and starting on our 10th year of publishing. That is pretty awesome in my mind, as we have undying support from a ton of sponsors, readers, friends, riders, and Iowans in general. We have had some wonderful support from our readers in and from Iowa. At any given point we are mailing subscriptions to over a dozen other states to people from or with strong ties to Iowa. We have had some advertisers in the magazine that have been with us from day one, and for that we are very thankful for the support, love, respect, and friendships we have established over the years. We could not do this without our supporters, so when you darken their doors, do us a favor and let them know you saw their ad in Thunder Roads. There have been some significant changes behind the scenes of the magazine, but every month like clockwork we put out the highest quality publication that we can, and that will never change as far as I am concerned. The only changes that we would like to see would be to find a couple of staffers in the eastern Iowa area, and also to get the next generation out and about with us more to events that are family friendly. I am sure you have all seen or met Sabin, Soren, and Violet. We feel that they are next in line to work on the magazine, so trying to train them first hand. If you see them with us, they love to shake a hand and meet new people. Never be afraid to say hello to any of us, we would love to meet you! The Schwarte Clan Quote of the Month: “America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.” Harry S Truman

This month we have a vintage inspired Tommy Gun wielding beauty named Vanessa on a beautiful old JD Harley owned by Eric Bass. Vanessa appears in Natanic’s Pin-ups 2020 biker babe calendar, which was recently released and is available now at Natanic.com

“You can’t get there from here” seems to be the catch-phrase heard repeatedly if you live anywhere close to the water this spring. This bike blessing was moved, that bike night is canceled, the ride for today can’t go north or south because the bridge is out and the water is over the highway. Seems like we are hemmed in again. Another 100 year flood and we are riding in circles. This too shall pass -soon, we hope. I know that what we have been experiencing pales in comparison to the Biblical flood of Noah’s day; it’s more of an inconvenience. Thankfully, God promised not to destroy all upon the earth again by flood. He even gave the rainbow as a sign of that promise to man. Though I wonder how many Harleys would fit on an ark.

was big enough or powerful enough to mess up God’s plan. Scripture says that God can take what was meant for evil and turn it for good. Yeah, man messed things up. “There is a way that seems right unto man, We recently completed our annual Run For The Son but in the end it leads events, had good turnouts for the rides and blessings but to death.” Proverbs it took some creative scrambling with all the water to pull 14:12. But, fortunately it off. Thought there for a while we’d be doing it by Jon for us, we are not God boat but in the end the outriggers and snorkel breather and he is and he had a plan for our restoration. Jesus, his on the bikes worked. Karla looked a little silly wearing son, came as a human baby, lived life, was tempted in all those arm floaties but don’t tell her. They matched her manners as we are, served and was persecuted, tortured headband and she thought she was (Stylin’). Thanks to all then crucified and raised from the dead, all to pay the in the biking community who helped and participated, price of admission for us into God’s presence and heaven. the day was a great success. Jesus’s sacrifice made it possible and now, we can get there from here. The afore-mentioned catch-phrase reminds me of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They had full access to Blessings, Mark God’s presence and to the paradise that was the garden except for one tree that God said was off limits. When Mark and Karla Cornick are Area Reps with the Christian Satan deceived Eve and they sinned by disobeying God, Motorcyclists Association. Find out more about CMA and they were removed - kicked out - and an angel was posted God’s plan for you at www.cmausa.org guard at the entrance to deny their passage. They lost the ability to gain access to God’s presence. Unfortunately it wasn’t just access to the garden they lost but also access to heaven. Basically they were told “You can’t get there from here”. Sin, then and now, can come rushing in like the water through a breach in the levee. Just like the coverage shown of downtown Davenport where the cars were trapped up to the windows in water and the windshield wipers were running things can change that quickly. But God wasn’t taken by surprise when sin entered into this world, just as he isn’t surprised when we seemingly screw our lives up again and again. We don’t have to worry that we missed the boat or missed God’s perfect plan because we made that wrong decision. I heard a pastor talking about counseling an individual who thought life was over, that what he had done was too bad to recover from. The pastor’s comment was that he didn’t think the individual 6 - TRMI JUNE 2019

Getting started in the world’s coolest motorsport

Photo by Shannon Price. Trail rides Many clubs offer for-fun-only, semi-competitive trail rides in addition to full-bore races. Often, to take the competitiveness of the event down a notch, the organizers introduce some fun, random elements into the competition. One such club is Variety Riders in Ottawa, Illinois. Variety Riders organizes about six “egg hunt” trail rides each year, with wooden pegs instead of real eggs.

Photo by Yve Assad. Kids don’t have to race to have fun on motorcycles, but if they’re mentally and physically tuned for racing, competition can be an immensely rewarding experience.

“The riders run two 15-minute heats around a set loop. At some point in the loop, they stop and pick up a colored peg,” explains Mark Fleming, vice president of Variety Riders. “They drop that peg in a scoring bucket and at the end of the second heat, we randomly assign points to each peg color and add up each kid’s points. We stress safety and fun. We run it as a family day, just people with a common hobby getting together and having a good time.”

As a parent, you need to honestly assess your child’s desire and ability before they line up at the starting gate.

It’s a big deal to start racing—for both your kid (emotionally, physically) and you (time and money investment). To help you get started, we caught up with a man who’s an expert when it comes to kids and racing: Philip Rispoli, who runs the Coolskunk dirt-track racing program that introduces kids to the fun world of dirt-track racing. “They need the right combination of parental support and the right rider attitude,” he says. “The parents must be committed to supporting the rider, and the rider needs that twinkle in the eye.” Rispoli stresses that parents must be on the right page: “If you end up with a world champion, great, but that’s not what this is about. We want to build a winner both on and off the track.” If you decide that racing is in the cards for your kids, there is a range of events to consider—from low-impact, participatory events to serious racing. Among those, your kid might qualify for one or more classes that vary by age and/or skill level. He or she will also need to be an AMA member, and possibly a member of your particular AMA district, to be eligible to compete.

Most kids get started racing in motocross. A motocross race usually includes a practice session and two “motos.” The combined score of the two motos determines the winner. You will pay a gate fee to get into the track and then an entry fee at sign-up for each class your child enters. The entry forms are straight-forward and basically cover liability and class selection. There are a number of beginning-level classes for kids. AMA Classes 3 and 4 accommodate less-experienced kids from 4-8 years old, riding less-powerful 50cc motorcycles. The AMA Amateur Rulebook includes the specific rules. Often, these classes are run on a smaller track. At some races, parents of kids in Classes 3 and 4 will have access to the track to help their kids if they fall.

Classes 1 and 2 generally include more experienced kids riding racier two-strokes with more advanced suspension. On this page, you can see a description of the different kinds Class 1 is for kids ages 4-6. Class 2 is for kids ages 7-8. of competition sanctioned by the AMA. Most tracks also offer beginning classes for older kids. If allow youth racing.) not, rest assured that there will be a wide range of skill level in any class they do run. Racers circulate the course counterclockwise, making only leftFor more on getting started in motocross, see the motocross hand turns. section of this website. A half-mile is just what it sounds like -- an oval course Hare scrambles roughly a half mile in length. Hare scrambles (also called cross country or grand prix races) are like motocross races in the woods. Because there is no second moto involved, as there is with motocross, race days are generally shorter. The class structure is similar to motocross, and kids compete on the same type of motorcycles. While the top kids are just as determined at a hare scramble as at a motocross, the general perception is the woods races are a less-intimidating environment. Much of that has to do with the longer course that leads to less tight racing. Hare scramble racers, particularly new ones, race against the course as much as they race the other participants. Photo by Josh Rud. Flat track Youth racers in flat track compete on the same type of bikes as youth racers in motocross and hare scrambles. Other than running flat-track tires, few modifications are necessary for beginners.

Flat track typically follows a heat/semi/main event format. Racers compete in the heats to qualify for the main. The top racers (the number depends on the size of the class) will qualify (or “transfer to”) the main. Those who don’t qualify in a heat compete in a semi. Unless the class has few entries, not all racers will make the main event. In small classes where everyone makes the main event, the heat race finishing order will be used to set the starting positions in the main event. Plenty of options

There are three types of flattrack racing for kids: shorttrack, half-miles and TTs. (Larger bikes and amateur adult classes will also compete on mile tracks, which don’t 16 - TRMI JUNE 2019

A TT course looks like a cross between a motocross and a short track. A TT course will include right-hand turns and usually a jump. Because the bikes run dirt-track tires, the course surface becomes hard-packed, rather than a motocross track which becomes rutted up from the knobby tires.

Motocross, hare scrambles and dirt track are just a three of the types of motorcycle competition available for kids. Hillclimb, trials, desert racing, road racing and others also offer opportunities for youth riders. For more on these opportunities, see the sections of this website dedicated to those types of racing. www.americanmotorcyclist.com

That first year we had almost 5,000 bikers show up and we have been going strong ever since. We have been able to purchase our own property in Algona and created Freedom Park. sturgis hall of fame inductees

Mission: “The mission and vision of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of motorcycling, honor those who have made a positive and significant impact on the sport and lifestyle and pay tribute to the history of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We do this through offering comprehensive and educational exhibits and showcasing rare and unusual examples significant to our history and sport.” The museum is open to visitors seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The museum offers a lower level where you can learn all about the individuals deemed worthy to be honored with a place in motorcycling history. “The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame has recognized individuals and groups who have made a long-term, positive impact on the motorcycle community since 2001. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony has grown from 50 people to over 800 and is the museum’s largest fundraiser of the year. We honor our Hall of Fame members by sharing the stories that showcase their contributions and accomplishments. In doing this, we hope to inspire our visitors and the riding community.” The 2019 Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at The Lodge at Deadwood on Wednesday, August 7th, 2019. This year the ceremony is particularly noteworthy to a biker magazine proud to be ABOUT IOWA, FOR IOWA, and FROM IOWA for a couple of good reasons…Frank Fritz and Jill Parham. Two proverbial names in the biker community. The following was said of 2019 Hall of Fame Inductee Jill Parham:

the Industry’s greatest growth, Jill became a pioneer in the motorcycle industry, one of the early women leaders in a historically male-centric industry. Jill continues to inspire women in the motorcycle industry and comments on her contributions to J&P Cycles, “Relationships were very important to John and me and I did very well establishing some of those”. Jill says one of the events which really brought growth and expanded the J&P Cycles customer base was the Sturgis Rally.” “It is fitting that Jill is honored in 2019 as it marks 40 years of her dedication to motorcycling and motorcycle riders as well as the 40th anniversary of company she co-founded, J&P Cycles. This induction is on behalf of John and Jill’s many great friends, the thousands of employee riders of J&P Cycles over the past 40 years and its millions of customers. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is honored to recognize Jill Parham’s contributions to motorcycling and supports the preservation of her legacy.” Frank Fritz has also spent years entrenching himself in the biker world. He has an extensive collection of two wheeled beauties and a love for all things timeworn. From entertaining the masses via television and allowing us to peek into his love of collecting to throwing himself headfirst into both local and national biker events, Frank is able to use his celebrity status to bridge an all too familiar gap between the biker world and the general public. Frank believes in the preservation of motorcycling’s past, and the strengthening of motorcycling’s future. If you aren’t otherwise engaged on August 7th, make the trip to South Dakota and be a part of Iowa biker history, when two Iowa legends take their places among the greats of the past in the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame!

“It is rare that a husband and wife can work closely side by side in the same business. In 1979 Jill helped expand company focus from swap meets to mailorder parts sales. After working two jobs for over Inductee and museum information taken from 10 years, and now seeing some family income from Sturgismuseum.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle J&P Cycles, Jill quit her job in 1991 and moved Museum and Hall of Fame Facebook page. to J&P Cycles full time. Eventually, J&P Cycles became the world’s largest retailer of aftermarket Melanie motorcycle parts and accessories. mother is a photographer and he has a cool eye for seeing shit most people overlook (an important trait if you need a photographer for sure). We would pull over, sometimes grab an ice cream cone, NEVER turn down ice cream while riding, uber important. But, ice cream or not, we would find cool things to see, relax, take some photos, and embrace the Make a Lifelong Memory, in a Day... fun information that was around us, be it a Freedom Rock, a 10 foot tall rotating piece of corn, scenic overlooks, or Might be the lamest headline to ever start an article that I whatever cool little feature we could find. We got so good at have ever been a part of! I mean, I have written some lame finding stuff like that, another brother from another mother, ass stuff over the years, but wow! Let’s make a memory; we who I will call Van Rock, because that is his cool ass nickare border line cartoon musical level lame here. I mean, name, decided to look up the top ten roadside attractions in come the hell on, this is a bad ass biker magazine after all, Iowa while we chilled around a hotel lobby one night with hell, an award winning biker mag with bitchin bikes, hot beverages at the end of a long day of riding. Remarking on lolitas, dirty jokes, and a certain attitude that you have come how many we had already checked out, almost by accident to expect from something called, THUNDER ROADS. and also noting how many will be quick to check off on the way home the next day! I wrote about this in great detail a Make a lifelong memory. Man, so damn lame. while back on these same pages, I can only assume you have saved every article that I have written and you can cross Hear me out before you picture me as an office boy at the reference it in a former issue. No, I don’t recall exactly what Disney marketing department, really, the headline may just issue it was in, but here is a clue, look for the one with a mofit. torcycle on the cover, that should narrow it down. Iowa is one of the best states to just flat out ride in that you can find. Sure, we don’t have massive mountain passes; we don’t have the Black Hills. We don’t have 12 months of great riding weather, beach side biker bars overlooking an ocean bay or even miles of long, lonely asphalt featuring salt flats that melt into the horizon. No, we (Iowa) doesn’t of course, but the state has some bitchin cool stuff to ride to, lots of things that you might have just throttled by on your way to whatever destinations were planned. 99 counties in our great state and for the most part, each one has something cool to check out, ride to, snap a photo of, or have a laugh at…kickstands up and you are on your way.

I had a photo pop up again recently, from a great weekend a few years back with a bunch of cool dudes and dudettes when we spent a weekend riding with for no reason other than, hell, the weekend looks great, let’s burn up some highways and see where we end up. Just why we were all together riding, I don’t recall, but boom there it was…a photo of some like-minded people sharing some laughs, a cigar, and learning what we could about a cool roadside attraction. What the attraction was, of course, doesn’t matter; the memory of the ride, the friends, and the laughs is what made the adventure all worth it.

I was chatting with a guy about that adventure and he told me about his plan, a plan that is currently underway. His riding buddies all decided a few years ago to hit every Freedom Rock destination across the state of Iowa. An amazing goal! When I last checked, of the 99 counties across Iowa, less than 20 DON’T have a Freedom Rocks. What a great story for sure and something that is purely unique to the Hawkeye state. If you need an excuse to ride somewhere cool, find out where the Freedom Rocks are, make a plan, and go for it. I cannot believe that is something I didn’t already think of! It’s I stumbled onto a web site, looking for something else rebrilliant and worth the effort on so many levels. I am sure cently that led me down an internet rabbit hole, we have all others have already considered this, maybe even pulled it off, been there (usually YouTube is the worst) but you click, then but now I have a new goal in mind to be sure. click, then click, and the next thing you know you are watching a video about, well, let’s stop with that rabbit hole before So maybe you need a goal, need a destination, need a reason I incriminate myself even more. So, I am on the internet and to ride somewhere. Iowa is loaded with some really cool I see an article about cool things to see in your state. Well, “stuff ” that is many times just off the beaten path. At the that posed the question, what is cool where I live? very least you can check out some of the I glanced over the list, mentally checking off things I have state’s great Freedom already ridden to and I was kind of happy that there were Rocks and maybe even several things on this list that I have already seen. Actufind some ice cream ally, I started thinking, “this is weird, how many of these I along the way. One have actually seen over the years!” Yes, some of that was by thing is for sure, along design, in case you were wondering. We actually set out to the way, you are likely see a bunch of cool shit, all across the state of Iowa, because, to make a lifelong why not? memory in a day. I thought of this again recently because of what I have recently brought up in this bad ass magazine, the very same one in which I am the former employee of the month. My spousal unit is always up for a side road adventure, we both know it’s about the journey, not the destination and if you need an excuse to ride somewhere, what’s a better reason than riding to a Freedom Rock, a big ass frying pan, or a plow stuck in an oak tree!

We were good at hitting cheesy roadside attractions while we rode anyway because my blood brother from another 28 - TRMI JUNE 2019

If you take a Tommy Gun, an old Harley, and a beautiful lady who’s not afraid to handle them both, then this is what you get to feast your eyes upon! Vanessa is this month’s feature model, who’s a big fan of modeling for the vintage/pin-up scene and is one of Natanic’s biker babe calendar models. If Vanessa’s stunning appeal doesn’t get your attention, then you might take notice of the fact that there’s an old Tommy Gun in her hands, and she’s posing with a 1928 Harley-Davidson JD provided by the Bass family collection. Vanessa’s vintage look was obtained with her own collection of lingerie and some amazing styling by her friend Jordan Mattison. We’ve seen trials on T.V. a thousand times. Before sitting to testify, a witness swears to “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” Like nearly everything else on T.V. trials, the “whole truth” is a fiction. In reality, juries hear far less than all there is to know about the case they are deciding. Sometimes, juries are even led to believe what law professors refer to as a “legal fiction,” or in plain terms, a lie. There’s one lie in particular I’ve been trying to expose for years.

and then let the assembled citizens, rather than a ruler, decide the outcome. In other words, the Greek system was mob justice with extra steps. Little more than popular passions moved the crowd to its verdict. For example, when the philosopher Socrates challenged young people to ponder the true nature of justice, the citizens of Athens, annoyed with Socrates for rocking the boat, convicted Socrates of “corrupting the youth” and executed him. This was in 399 BC.

Hey there, fellow Iowa bikers. Thunder Roads brought me back for another article and gave me a lot of space to write about whatever I like. I’m thankful for this opportunity because there’s something I learned on the road to becoming a lawyer that has always bothered me about how our Iowa trial system works. It’s the sort of thing you can’t simply pass along by word of mouth. I’m talking about a lie told in every trial I’ve been involved in, a lie upheld by law. This lie hides beneath a thick layer of complexity and an origin of honorable intentions. The good news is that, like any lie, this one is destroyed by truth. Strap in, we’re going on a deep dive.

Since the Greek failure, we’ve learned that trials cannot be popularity contests if trials are to obtain justice. In fairness to the ancient Greeks, they had the right idea. The People, rather than a ruler, should be entrusted with the administration of justice on a case-by-case basis. Part of fixing the Greek failure was a transition from open-air crowd chanting to closed-room jury deliberation. While this mostly gets rid of the mob-mentality, we still face the danger that a jury will decide upon personal likes and dislikes instead of what is right and lawful. In our American trial system, one way we prevent a trial from becoming a popularity contest is by withholding from juries entire categories of evidence.

The American trial system has roots in ancient history. We do not have a perfect justice system, but the one we have is the best yet invented. That’s because our system comes from studying thousands of years of failure, scratching our heads, and then saying, “Well, let’s not do that again.” More than being based on what we think might be good for us to do, our justice system is designed to avoid things we know from experience to be terrible. Unfortunately, fresh and genuinely good ideas tend to play out horribly when applied to trials. The ancient Greeks had a fresh, good idea. Their idea was democracy. The Greeks treated democracy like we treat bacon. They put it in everything, including trials. Ancient Greeks allowed people to speak publically at their trials,

You may be surprised to learn that juries are rarely allowed to hear character evidence about the parties to a case, or even about witnesses. The reason is straightforward. If the trial is for theft, the jury decides whether the accused person stole something, not whether the accused person is a shady type. If the trial is for negligent driving causing a crash, the jury decides whether the accused person drove according to the law, not whether that person is a good driver. And so on. American trials permit a jury to consider only evidence relevant to answering the exact question the jury must answer. Character evidence is almost never relevant, so the law usually keeps it from the jury. Flip the page for the rest...CONT Page 34

It goes further. Juries will be denied relevant evidence that is undeniably true when that evidence is so unfairly prejudicial that the evidence could unbalance the trial. Say, for example, John Doe is riding his motorcycle on a country highway when a pickup truck turns left in front of John, causing a crash. John breaks his collar bone and ribs. At the hospital, John’s friend takes more than 50 pictures of John’s injuries. In three of these pictures, John isn’t wearing a shirt, and his tattoo saying, “I CAN’T DRIVE 55” is visible. At trial, the truck driver defends himself by claiming that John was speeding, and therefore shares some, or even most, of the blame.

days, the way things have worked for decades now, is that when a person is sued for negligence, and is insured, the insurance company hires a lawyer to defend the insured person. This lawyer answers not to his human client, but rather to his corporate client, the insurance company. Somewhere in the terms and conditions of the insurance contract, the insured person is bound to cooperate with the legal defense. What this really means, is that the insurance company calls the shots and if the insured person doesn’t like how the insurance company is choosing to handle the lawsuit, the insured person can be denied coverage for acting against the insurance company’s litigation strategy. That strategy, by the way, is usually: try as hard as possible to screw over Under these circumstances, a judge should order the injured person. The company, meanwhile, gets to that photos of John’s tattoo can’t be shown to the jury. hide behind its human customer at trial. Now, the photos aren’t relevant because John has a tattoo that might be about speeding. That would be What do I mean by this? In Iowa, even though character evidence tending to show John is the type a personal injury lawsuit is brought against the of guy who likes to speed, rather than tending to insurance policy of a negligent person, and even show that John was speeding at the time of the crash. though the insurance company controls essentially But, the photos are relevant for another purpose. every aspect of how the case is defended, when Because they show what John’s injuries looked like filing a lawsuit, an injured person must name when John was still in the hospital, the photos are a the negligent person only, and not the insurance useful tool for the jury in determining whether John company who actually runs the show. It’s as though was truly injured as badly as he claims. So why does The Great and Powerful Oz is not allowed to be the judge keep the photos from the jury? One or discovered as the man behind the curtain. This is more of the jurors might harbor prejudice against the “legal fiction,” this is the lie. Lawsuits that are people with tattoos and, due to that prejudice, might basically always filed against insurance companies treat John unfairly in deliberating his case. Also, have to be carried out in front of the jury as though there are 47 other hospital photos of John’s injuries, the negligent person, the human being with an so the relevance of the three pictures showing John’s insurance policy, is the real defendant. The truth tattoo is low. is it’s the insurance company’s money on the line if the jury finds the human defendant to be at fault for Alright. So far, so good. All good, in fact. All of negligently harming someone else. these evidence rules have led to a better system of justice. Here’s where the problem starts. In the It isn’t this way everywhere. In Wisconsin, for early 20th Century, liability insurance, the sort of example, injured people sue insurance companies insurance all vehicle owners and home owners carry directly and the jury knows who the true defendant these days, was not common. Lawyers, judges, and is at trial. Our laws should be changed, modeled lawmakers were concerned that after Wisconsin’s successful in a negligence case, such as way of doing things in light of the truck driver who turns left modern realities. While it may in front of oncoming traffic, the have been a good idea about jury would see the truck driver’s a hundred years ago to keep liability insurance as character juries in the dark about insurance evidence. Todd’s dad, Larry, served 20 years in the United States Air Force. His brother, Scott, spent 10 years serving in the Air Force as well. With a family history this rich in military background, it just seemed natural to choose a similar career path. Following his military career, Todd has maintained membership in the American Legion for 20 years. Now, Todd is relatively new to the riding community in the grand scheme of things, but you wouldn’t know that by watching him tear up the pavement. He started riding in 2014 after watching his wife, Rhonda, scoot around on two wheels. It looked like she was having a hell of a time, and who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Todd started out on a 2013 Honda Shadow Phantom 750, and has since moved on to a 2017 Harley – Davidson Road Glide Special. When asked about his Road Glide, Todd said he picked it up at Pigs Trail Harley – Davidson in Rodgers, Arkansas. Napoli’s Italian Restaurant 1205 W US Highway 30 Carroll, IA 51401 (712) 775-2565 Hours: Monday – Thursday 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM Friday – Saturday 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM Sunday 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM Heading home after one of our frequent weekend events, Vernon and I decided that we were ready for some sustenance, and neither one of us was really in the mood to slave in the kitchen as soon as we set down our bags. About the time we hit Carroll, we decided that a little Italian nourishment was what sounded the best, so we pulled into the small lot in front of a little establishment just off of Highway 30 and said a little prayer to the marinara gods that Napoli’s would be a little slice of Italian heaven. Once inside, we were quickly greeted and taken to our table. The dining area is designed to mimic an outdoor seating arrangement, with greenery and brick accents. The restaurant was relatively busy for a Sunday afternoon, but that did not prevent our waitress from promptly bringing us a copy of the menu and taking our drink orders. Perusing the menu turned out to be a formidable task, simply because everything on the menu sounded like just what I wanted. The appetizer section alone had three or four things we wanted to try. We decided on the Bruschetta, as it tends to be a favorite for both of us. When the Napoli’s version arrived at our table it was five pieces of perfectly toasted Italian baguette topped with a delicious combination of tomato, red onion, kalamata olives, olive oil, and a sprinkling of crumbled feta cheese…this is a little different than your standard recipe, but proved to be scrumptious none the less.

Vernon decided on the Chicken Scarparelli as his entrée. Now, this generally comes with a combination of Alfredo and Marinara sauces, but Vernon requested his with only red sauce. If you have never heard of Chicken Scarparelli, let me tell you what its all about. This dish comes with sautéed chicken and house made Italian sausage cooked up with a heaping portion of mushrooms, onions, and green peppers all piled on top of perfectly al dente spaghetti noodles in marinara. The fact that the sausage is made in house was enough to spark interest. I decided to opt for the Pasta Combo, hoping to get the most bang for my buck. This cheesy indulgence included small portions of lasagna, cannelloni, manicotti, cheese ravioli, and penne pasta all on one saucy plate. The ravioli was filled with cheesy goodness, and nearly the size of my palm. The lasagna was every bit as good as homemade. I have to say that while every single morsel was delicious, my favorite by far was the cannelloni. It was perfectly filled with flavorful meat, and had just the right balance of melted mozzarella on top. Everything brought to our table proved to be satiating. The waitress returned to ask the question I was dreading… “would anyone care for dessert?” Oh, how I wanted dessert…a chocolate cannoli, tiramisu, limoncello, Italian crème cake…who wouldn’t want some of that? But alas, we had by this time made pigs of ourselves and had one take home container already filled. The sweet treats would have to wait until our return visit…yes, there will be a return visit. We have so many things yet to try at Napoli’s…lobster ravioli, tortellini, chicken cacciatore…we should have taken a to go menu to prepare for next time! Did I mention that their prices won’t break the bank either? If you want great Italian food paired with great service, then this is your next stop… and don’t forget to tell them Thunder Roads sent you!

While enjoying our appetizer, the waitress returned and we eagerly asked for her help. There were so many delicious options to choose from, but thank fully she pointed us in the right direction by noting that there were several options of the “sampler” variety so that we could try several Italian Melanie j Schwarte delicacies without having to take home half of Sicily in a Styrofoam box. We made our choices and shortly after, two As always if you have some place in your neck of the woods crispy, fresh salads were brought to the table to enjoy while you think we would enjoy shoot me an email at melanie@ awaiting our entrees…which seemed to appear in no time at thunderroadsiowa.com all. One day two single friends, Derek and Chris, were clubbing and grabbing digits left and right. Chris ended up getting blasted, but insisted on drinking and driving and they flew over a curve and both of them died. Derek went to heaven and Chris went to hell. Well, Derek has seen all of heaven n and wants to see his buddy Chriss in in hell. So Derek asks God if he can go to hell and check on his buddy Chris. hris hr is.. is God allows Derek to go down to hell hel elll and find Chris. He grew up in the old West. As a child he read everything about gunfighters he could find. His hero was Billy the Kidd. He dreamed of being just like his hero. One day he went to town and bought himself a black hat, some black clothes, a black horse and two pistols. He went home and every day he went out behind his barn, and practiced shooting. After two weeks he was getting to be quite a good shot. He decided it was time to show off. He put on his black clothes and hat, strapped on his guns and rode into town. When he walked into the saloon, standing at the bar he saw Billy the Kidd. He was so excited! He walked up and said, “Mr. Kidd, I am your biggest fan. I have always wanted to be just like you.” “Look at me. Do I look like a gunfighter?” Billy looked him over and said, “Well, you have the right clothes and you have a nice black hat, and I see you rode up on a black horse. But, can you shoot?” Marvin looked around the room and said, “See that piano player over there?” He drew his pistol and fired, shooting the cufflink off the piano player’s shirt. Billy said, “Not bad. Can you shoot with your left hand? A gunfighter has got to be able to shoot with both hands.” Marvin drew his other pistol and fired, shooting off the piano player’s other cufflink. Billy said, “That’s mighty fine shooting. I just have one piece of advice for you.” Marvin was bubbling with excitement, “What is it? What else should I do?” Billy spoke slowly, “Well, go back into the kitchen there and get a big tub of lard. Take both of your pistols and rub them around in the lard, get them good and slick.” Marvin was puzzled. He asked, “Why is that important? What good will rubbing my pistols in lard do?” Billy replied, “It won’t help your shooting at all, but when Wyatt Earp finishes playing the piano over there he’s going to shove both of your pistols up your ass.”

At school, a boy was told by a classmate A that most adults are hiding at least one dark secret, and that this makes it very easy to blackmail them by saying, “I know the whole truth”. The boy decides to go home and try it out. Before anyone knows it, the three men found themselves standing before the pearly gates of Heaven, where St. Peter and the Devil were standing nearby. “Gentlemen,” the Devil started, “Due to the fact that Heaven is now overcrowded, St. Peter has agreed to limit the number of people entering Heaven. If anyone of you can ask me a question which I don’t know or cannot answer, then you’re worthy enough to go to Heaven; if not, then you’ll come with me to Hell.” The philosopher then stepped up, “OK, give me the most comprehensive report on Socrates’ teachings.” With a snap of his finger, a stack of paper appeared next to the Devil. The philosopher read it and concluded it was correct. “Then, go to Hell!” With another snap of his finger, the philosopher disappeared. The mathematician then asked, “Give me the most complicated formula ever theorized!” With a snap of his finger, another stack of paper appeared next to the Devil. The mathematician read it and reluctantly agreed it was correct. “Then, go to Hell!” With another snap of his finger, the mathematician disappeared too. The idiot then stepped forward and said, “Bring me a chair!” The Devil brought forward a chair. “Drill 7 holes on the seat.” The Devil did just that. The idiot then sat on the chair and let out a very loud fart. Standing up, he asked, “Which hole did my fart come out from?” The Devil inspected the seat and said, “The third hole from the right.” “Wrong,” said the idiot, “it’s from my asshole.” And the idiot went to heaven. One fine summer’s evening, Paul, Mick and Tom are riding back home from the bar, all three of them on Paul’s motorcycle. Of course, they get stopped by a cop who says to them, “This motorcycle is only licensed to carry two people, and there are three of you. One of you will have to get off and walk.” “Three of us?” says Paul as he turns to Mick. “Jeez, what happened to Bob and Nate?”
