I think we have done a pretty damn good job staying on task. Steering this boat into the future has been a passion of mine for the last 145 issues, and look forward to continuing that streak! Thanks, tons, for being a part of this magazine in the past and into the future. Thank you also to our loyal readers, subscribers, people that rely on us for the Iowa biker world information, and those of you that just look at the pictures!

It is hard to imagine giin ne th that hat at w wee ar aare ree no now in now into nto o our thirteenth year ar of of ppublishing ubbliisshhin ing this thiss th critter! I could not have imagined what could have come from this 12 years ago when w wee took over the reigns gns ns ooff this magazine. Th There herre has been a ton off ch chan change han ange ge ge in the world, in the he magazine, in our llives, ives ives iv es, and in the biker world in that amount of time, and hard to imagine what will come in the next 12 years. I know that I am sure looking forward to seeing what will happen for sure. I would like to thank all of the people that have been reading this thing for the past dozen years. I would like to thank the advertisers that have been here since the start, and those that have joined on during the ride to keep this magazine coming to readers month after month. We could not do this without their help and they mean the world to us.

With all that said, I am excited as hell for June here in Iowa! We hit as many May events as we possibly could with time that we had available, and let me tell you, people are raring to get out and about and have some fun. People don’t like the price of filling the tanks, but I think are saying gas prices be damned, we are not going to be cooped up any longer and miss any more time with our brothers and sisters on the roadways! We may just all have to partake of two and three wheeled travels as much as possible to travel as cost effectively as possible. Fuel prices be damned, ride that thing as much as you possibly can. Figure We started off with the thoughts of having out how to get to work, get groceries, a motorcycle magazine that is not about work on your own mental health on the bikes per se, but about what we do and two wheels all the while saving money. Not a bad idea, where we go when we throw a leg over. A biker lifestyle magazine if you will. We have tried some new things along right? the way, some have worked, and some the fire burned out and we moved on to other things, but all the while keeping I thought that the May event list was considerable, and then comes June with runs, rallies, bike nights, supper the same theme of being About Iowa, For Iowa, and From rides, and just people hopping on to go out and find a cold Iowa. We wanted to have a magazine that was the source drink and a hot meal. This is all good to see, and we better for information and listing of Iowa events, Iowa Bike Nights, Iowa Event coverage, and things about Iowa Riders. enjoy it while we have the chance. Take advantage of the good weather days that we have coming up and the ability to go out and ride free while we can! Life is too short to sit around and be lame! In the back of every magazine is an events list, and in the summer months we add the bike night and supper ride list. Check these out and get to some That is the message as we roll into June. I was thumbing my way through the internet the other day when I ran across a demo video of something I never thought I’d see: a self-driving motorcycle. It accelerates, makes slow turns, even lowers its own kickstand and leans to a stop. Apparently, BMW has been working on the design for the last few years. They say the project is really geared toward helping them better understand the dynamics of riding and making them more aware of dangers posed for the rider - not toward putting a self-driving bike on the road. Guess only the future will show if that’s true or not! I can’t say I’m interested in a self-driving bike, but if it ever did become available, I think it would be prudent to sit back and let a few years go by while the bugs get worked out on some other poor soul. We’ve all seen issues in new offerings, from the iPhone 6s that couldn’t hold a charge for more than a few hours to the Yugo GV with its underwhelming ability to go from zero to 60 in 15.3 seconds. And while sometimes a design flaw in a new product is fixable, other times the whole thing just has white, in-between, to be re-tooled. talented, average – none of that matters. That’s pretty much what happened with humanity. Adam had a perfect design in the beginning. The Bible tells All that matters is if us that God looked at his creation and said it was good. He you have chosen to had a loving relationship with Adam and Eve, coming down admit that you were born a sinner, that to walk in the garden with them each evening to talk with you believe that Jesus them about their day. It sounds a lot like what we parents Christ offers the only do with our own kids at bedtime. But then Adam and Eve chose to sin, resulting in a broken relationship with God and way to be born again as a child of God, and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. that you then begin to live as part of God’s I don’t think we fully understand what Adam and family. Eve had and what they lost for all of us because we’ve never experienced the perfection that they did. If I ever Sure, there will be a have regrets about any of my decisions and how they’ve learning curve. Have affected the people I care about, that is nothing compared you ever watched to the regrets Adam and Eve must have had. They had videos of foster kids to watch as every single human born after them was born broken, into a broken world. Sin was now encoded into the who are learning what it means to be part of a healthy, DNA of every human being. The design passed down by the loving family? That’s basically us while we’re here on first Adam was irretrievably, un-fixably flawed. No matter earth. We all have a lot to learn. But God is patient with us. He paid a huge price to offer us the chance to be re-made how far back we go with “Ancestry.com”, “23 and Me”, and be reconciled to him. Won’t you accept his offer? or any other DNA search, we will still be revealed to be humans, and therefore sinners. We need to have someone Blessings – Karla completely re-tool our design. God has provided that through his son, Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 15:21 & 22 say this: “For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” The first Adam chose to disobey and through him, all humanity is now born physically and spiritually under the curse of sin and death without even having a say-so in the matter. But Jesus Christ was willing to become the second Adam. He came to earth to live as a human but he chose to obey God. Now, through him, all humanity has been given the choice to be spiritually born again as children of God.

You can try to get to heaven by your good works, but heaven was created for God and his family. All he will have to do is pull up your blood type and look at your DNA. If he sees the blood type of Adam, you’re out. Not part of God’s family. But if he sees the blood type of Jesus, you’re in. You’re his. Rich, poor, smart, not-so-smart, black, 6 - TRMI JUNE 2022

not so USELESS RAMBLINGS Grooming.... Although brain development is subject to significant

individual variation, most experts suggest that the brain is fully developed by age 25. For some people, brain development may be complete prior to age 25, while for others it may end after age 25. The mid-20s or “25” is just an average age given as checkpoint for when the brain has likely become mature. This is why laws were changed to allow our children to remain on our health insurance plans until age 26. The argument was that their brains weren’t fully developed enough to have gainful employment that would offer healthcare benefits. It’s interesting that the lawmakers don’t think our young adults are mentally capable enough to maintain gainful employment, but at the ripe age of just 18 they can enlist in our armed services to fight and die for our country, enter into legally binding contracts, get married, and vote. Although, our lawmakers have been pushing the idea that voting rights should be lowered to age 16. What could go wrong there, right? I mean, I’m sure at 16 I had a perfect understanding of our political system and what my vote would mean. The latest development for our children has been a push by our lawmakers to allow them to circumvent their parents completely. In multiple cities across this nation there have been instances of teachers in public and private schools counseling our children on their feelings that their gender identity does not align with their biological sex. These teachers and schools are fighting to keep that information away from you, the parents.

One state that has been in the news lately is the Sunshine State, Florida. Governor Ron DeStantis is really rankling some feathers down there. A certain portion of the population is pretty upset by his new bill. The Parental Rights in Education bill passed the state legislature in March 2022. This bill has been thoroughly attacked by some and dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by those that misleadingly claimed it bans any discussion to being gay in Florida schools. The bill prohibits classroom instruction on “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” with children in the third grade and younger, “or in a manner that is not ageappropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards. The bill does not ban the word “gay” in school settings, and it does not ban casual discussion of the topics relating to sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom. Once a child enters fourth grade these restrictions no longer exist. I encourage you to look up the bill and read its text so that you have a full understanding of its contents. So why is it that our children are being groomed? Why do some people think that second and third graders should be taught sexual orientation? What happened to reading, writing, and arithmetic? Why is sexual education being pushed onto students that haven’t even come close to puberty? Indoctrination.

The indoctrination of the population is best started when they are young. The mind, as stated earlier, is not fully developed and is much more susceptible to suggestion when it’s young. This is why it is much easier for a child to learn The Alabama state legislature has passed a bill that would a second language than it is for my 49 year old brain. Lucky’s on 16th 86 16th Avenue SW Cedar Rapids, Iowa (319)-200-4590 Open Daily 6AM-9PM

While spending some time in the Cedar Rapids area for a swap meet, we decided to roll out of bed ahead of schedule and make our way to one of the local spots that serve up delicious breakfast options. Lucky’s on 16th is a social hot spot in the heart of the Czech Village. Lucky’s is famous for serving great food, beer, and cocktails. Offering American comfort fare at modest prices, made Lucky’s a spot on our “must visit” list. Many weekends you can listen to live music while enjoying your meal, but since we were on a tight schedule, we figured some breakfast grub would work just fine.

me. Vernon must have been cheating off my paper, because he also went the biscuits and gravy route. Vernon opted for a unique menu item, the biscuits and gravy flight. His meal arrived in all it’s breakfast glory, three tall stacks of biscuit and gravy beauty. The first of the three options was a standard fluffy biscuit topped with a generous portion of sausage gravy. The second was just like mine, a thick biscuit, sausage patty, scrambled egg, and more creamy gravy. The third choice was one I had never tried before, a fresh biscuit, topped with a juicy piece of fried chicken, scrambled egg, and even more sausage gravy. I have never thought of putting fried chicken on my biscuits and gravy, but I am sure glad that Lucky’s did. What a delicious spot for breakfast. If you are in the boozy breakfast mood, be sure to sample their mimosas or bloody marys. Both looked delicious. And the “weekend” bloody comes with pickles, olives, and a crispy slice of bacon…so it’s basically a side dish anyway, right? The next time you are in Cedar Rapids, make sure to visit all the cool spots in the Czech Village, including Lucky’s on 16th, and tell them Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa sent you! Until next time! Melanie J Schwarte If you have a WRTE location for us to visit, please let me know at Melanie@ thunderroadsiowa.com

We arrived shortly after 8 am, and the place was already hoppin. Patrons filled a majority of the seating when we arrived, but luckily there was only two in our party, so we were quickly ushered to a small table. The waitress brought us cups of piping hot coffee and a couple of menus to peruse. The expansive breakfast menu boasted traditional breakfasts, omelets, skillets, French toast, pancakes, and even breakfast burritos. But on our radar was the extensive list of biscuits and gravy variations that we had seen others enjoying when we walked in. I went with the traditional sausage and biscuits. This option arrived, completely covering my plate with two fluffy biscuits, two sausage patties, two scrambled eggs, and completely covered with rich sausage gravy. Alongside was a massive helping of perfectly crispy, salty hashbrowns. I should have paid better attention to the half order option, as there was no way I could finish the massive plate of deliciousness the waitress brought 22 - TRMI JUNE 2022

Two Generals were preparing for battle. The first General calls his aide and says “Bring me my red uniform!” The other General asks why he would wear a red uniform. The first General explains that if he gets wounded then his soldiers won’t see the blood and lose their courage. The other General thinks about this, then calls to his aide “Bring me my brown uniform!”

Two married buddies are out drinking one night when one turns to the other and says, “You know, I don’t know what else to do. I take my shoes off before I go into the house, I sneak up the stairs, I get undressed in the bathroom. I ease into bed and my wife STILL wakes up and yells at me for staying out so late!” His buddy looks at him and says, “Well, you’re obviously taking the wrong approach. TRMI JUNE 2022 - 33

Never over-look the importance of protection. Ever so closer we inch towards our celebration of a Mid Summers Night Eve and if that doesn’t make you feel all fresh and clean, I cannot help you! And feeling fresh and clean can be a challenge when riding in June! You see what I did there! Classic segue right there people, do not try this at home because after all I am a trainer professional. You see, June might… just might be one of the most perfect months on the calendar year. Sure it can rain like a bitch, sure it can be colder than my first wife’s heart and sure it can be hotter than Satan’s sack, but it can also set up to be the best riding weather of the year. Some days are just magic with copious amounts of sunshine, the longest amount of Daylight of the year, warm evenings with amazing sunsets when you hate to see the days end. I really love June…all of it. Sure, we might get enough heat to crank up the AC, fine, I never bitch about the heat, never. I don’t care it if’s Africa hot, I am talking the bowels of the Congo heat, the oppressive heat that causes you to instantly sweat, you can’t pound enough water, I love it because you don’t have to shovel that shit! Winter sucks, let’s just call it what it is. Sure, the romance of Christmas and snow is cute and in our minds eye, a Rockwell painting with kids smiling and reindeer prancing. It’s for the birds. This is coming from a guy, me, that does like to play in the outdoors in the winter, I like to test my mettle, see what I can handle, do things that most people

cannot do or won’t try to do in the deep dark cold that is the winter. The isolation can and will clear the mind, body and soul. That said, it’s wickedly over rated! Oh, there is glory in being cold, said very few people ever. Screw that, give me the warmth, the heat, the sun, the summer. What’s hotter? A lady with four layers of thermal gear on, not able to completely put her arms down because the cloths are so thick that she is forced to waddle, or same lady, chaps, bikini bottom, plunging v neck shirt or less? Actually, just chaps and a bandanna…but that might be rumored Algona fashion statement only. No, it’s not really, but it’s likely more acceptable there I would imagine. Free the bosom, a wonderful cause we can and should all get behind. I have loved June since I was a farm kid on the black soil dirt of Northwest Iowa. Many people ask me where I grew up and I am always proud to tell them the same thing. “Do you know where Okoboji is?” I smile and say. “Yes of course, everyone does!” Well, I am not from there. While some of my best memories and times of my life are from the Iowa Great Lakes region, I am in point of fact, not from there. However, I did grow up 68 miles from my family’s farm to the place I’d enter my Okoboji mindset, Emerson state park. Okay, really once I’d hit Vic’s Corner, my mindset changed, I went into relax mode and it didn’t matter if I was riding or driving, as a matter of fact, there are several landmarks around the lakes region that still do it for me and mostly because it used to be June when I started my visits. Speaking of riding and Boji, the statute of limitations has long since passed, the people that would be pissed are long cold and

dead, so I talk about this now. I have mentioned this in past articles, but my first “road bike” was really a road/ trail bike, a Honda 90. It was a 1968, my grandpa gave it to me at a very young age to ride, in fact I rode that bike a million miles on trails and fields before I ever ventured onto the road with. It was the third bike that was “mine”. I started with my Easter present at 6 1/2 years old, a Red Fox Mini Bike, a Yamaha 80 that I quickly out grew out of, then on to the Honda 90. I loved that bike as much as any bike I have EVER owned. Anyway, there was this girl I met at a track meet from Storm Lake or Okoboji, I legit cannot remember what school she went to and can barely remember her name. I ran track in high school, jumping those dumbass hurdles for 400 meters, running 4x400 because it was fun! But mostly I ran track because one of the football coaches ran the track program and it was kind of expected. I enjoyed it, but mostly I loved track meets. At a certain track meet, I seem to recall it was in Rock Rapids, I chatted with some girls from the Great Lakes and next thing you know, I was planning a motorcycle trip, from my farm to the lakes, On my Honda 90. Top speed, 65 maybe, but back then 55 was still the top speed anyway. First weekend in June, hot summer Friday afternoon, we just got out of school a few days prior, I was a junior and she wanted a ride on a bike. Now, the fact that I didn’t have a motorcycle endorsement never bothered me. Oh sure, it OCCURRED to me but it never BOTHERED me. The date was in no way memorable, I barely recall what we did, but I do remember riding there and more importantly, riding home well after dark, on Highway 9 on a hot summer night with a smile on my face and no eye protection. Only a dozen or so corn moths found my eye sockets and

two my nose. Pretty sure that wasn’t the first time I ever did something I shouldn’t have for a lady and I am willing to bet, there ain’t a dude reading this that has EVER done something stupid for a girl. June was when school ended. I could ride all the time, the crops were planted, it was a bit of a down time for the farm, and since I have been doing what I do for better than 35 years now, I still love chilling in June and enjoying when school is over, only now it’s my kids that are wrapping up their annual scholastic commitments. My thoughts are of swinging a leg over my bike, grabbing my babe, and chasing that sun. So many great biker events this June, hell every June that I look forward to. Reconnecting with fellow bikers, seeing faces that many times I only see with two wheels under me and some of my favorite joints and haunts to well…haunt again. There is something about riding a familiar road, knowing the curves, the lines, the views the small-town cafe, burger joint, dive bar or whatever, seeing places you know is only matched with the discovery of a new road, joint, or meeting a new friend. The memories that get me thru the winter are the memories I create in the summer and summer in my world is as long as I can stretch that bitch out for. Bring me those long days of June, I will chase that sunset and now I know enough to make sure I have eye protection. Todd “Crash” Davis
