The eleventh month is upon us already. How in the hell did it end up being November already? It seems like June just got over. Time flies faster the more the years add up. At least the summer flying by is followed by the winter time flying by. That is what I am going to keep thinking and hoping so that we can get back to normal riding season again shortly! Fall and winter are not necessarily bad though, as it gives us some time to get bikes to the shop for repairs or upgrades. Whether you are buying parts to install yourself, or taking your bike to a shop, don’t forget about the advertisers on Pages 10-12. These are the places that keep this magazine coming to you every month of the year, so darken their doors with your biker needs, and tell them that TRMI sent you. Our event listing is pretty slim right now. That is pretty obvious why with the shorter days, colder nights and deep fall setting in and mama nature setting us up for winter. It is not that biker events as a whole are done, but they are severely limited this time of year. November and December are pretty slim as not many are riding, and most people have family and Holiday things to attend to. We always try to have the most comprehensive event listing around, so if you have confirmed dates for any upcoming events, email them to Vernon@ thunderroadsiowa.com. We want to populate the list of events as early as possible, so get us your events if you are in charge or events that you know of as being confirmed. The event listing is and always will be FREE, just send the date, name and starting town of the event. Anything other than that, we can get you hooked up with some ad space to help further promote your event. We do the FREE listing though because if people don’t know what is going on, they cannot get to your events, or don’t know when to schedule their own events.
Another big thing on my mind for November is Veterans Day. Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at half-mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am. I personally recommend utilizing the 11th hour, or the 11th day, of the 11th month to stand if at all possible in honor of the Veterans who have fought for our rights we so truly embrace as Americans. Thank you to all that have served for doing what you have done so that we can do what we do. Thanksgiving Day is also a part of November. I would like thank my family for being a part of all of this and standing behind me in good and bad times. When I refer to family, it means my immediate family and my TRMI family, all of which are there for me at any given time. I am truly thankful for the love and support, and thank each and every one of you for being a part of my life. My thanksgiving is about those around me with undying support. Thank you for that, and hopefully each of you can tell those in your lives how you feel and who you are thankful for. As I write, we are preparing for the final large event of the season for us, CMA’s annual national Changing of the Colors rally at our headquarters in Hatfield, Arkansas; it is actually an International rally with CMAers from 30 countries that attend. This will be our 5th year interval where we have the opportunity to hang out, fellowship and listen to leaders from all these other places. It is eye opening to hear of the European and South African rallies, the dominate clubs and cultures they experience. One account of African road trips I remember had to do with their road signs. Here we have the “watch out for deer” signs, while there they have the “watch out for hyena” signs. 99 counties to tour on the bike, 99 counties to tour, take one down, drive on around, 10 counties to tour on the bike. A few years back, a summer riding goal was to ride through each one of the counties of Iowa, and what was found was a wealth of interest and beauty. Each month we will revisit each county as a featured article. We will tell you about new things to see, places to ride, and give you a little spark of curiosity for our state of Iowa.

It was interesting just to get off the beaten path and meet some people and see the sights. Some of the neatest vintage houses and office buildings can be found in this rail/river town. As the day was rapidly getting away from us, we had to continue to head west for the day, and rolled through some more of scenic and curvy Wapello County. It is certainly a place that we want to go back and spend some more time. Smooth roads, curvy and hilly, and folks that are as friendly as can be make Wapello County a great place to visit or hang around for a bit. Where is the Beach? By Dick Tremain The bus dropped us off at the American Army encampment and the orange-vested woman directed us one block ahead and two blocks to the left. We walked to that location and found a troop of Boy Scouts blocking the beach road. “Go that way and turn at the windmill,” one scout said. We walked and couldn’t see the windmill. We ran into two German Nazi SS officers that refused to help and the man on the porch said, “Keep going!” How hard is it to find a beach? Really. How hard is it?!?! We found ourselves in a park where we met a “Duck” driver. From atop his amphibious World War II vehicle, he invited us aboard and said he would take us to the beach. He dropped the ladder and we climbed aboard. He started the diesel engine with a smelly puff of smoke and a roar and off we went lurching down the road with a 48 star American flag flapping in the breeze. He drove us through the Boy Scout check point down to the beach. He turned onto a sandy peninsula and drove us into the water. He ground some gears and engaged the propeller. Off we went…boating around a point, up a ramp, onto a street, and he let us off at “fleet landing.”

What went on that day and the days that followed are impossible to imagine. We try, but our five visits to Utah Beach in Normandy haven’t really helped. The beaches that hosted so much horror so
long l ago are now so peaceful. People swim s in the French surf, horses trot on the th beach, and people sun themselves near n this long stretch of peaceful and undeveloped u sand.
Whew. This was our amazing introduction to D-Day Conneaut 2017. Conneaut is a small Ohio town on Lake Erie four miles from the Pennsylvania border. Each year since 1999, the people of Conneaut stage the largest D-Day reenactment in the world. Thousands of soldiers and airmen; Germans, Americans, Poles, English, and French reenactment enthusiasts recreate the events of June 6, 1944 and the Allied landings in Normandy. Reenactors wear complete uniforms of all types of combatants; German infantry officers and men, SS officers, American GIs, English, Canadian, and so on. Even nurses and women, dressed in period costumes
The T Normandy beaches are peaceful. The Conneaut beaches are not. At the 3:00 p.m. August 19th amphibious landing, thousands of us stood behind German beach emplacements. We watched these soldiers load and fire their weapons, shoot machine guns, and fire Tiger tank rounds. American P-51 aircraft “strafed” the German positions. Then American tanks and troops landed and advanced on the German positions with loud bangs, smoke, and weapons blazing. They advanced on the enemy beach positions and as if on cue, won the battle to the delight of the thousands of onlookers. The Normandy beach was now ours once again. D-Day Conneaut takes place in the middle of August each year. The people are very friendly and there is much to do including riding Higgins boats, learning history from reenactors, visiting troop encampments, seeing weapons demonstrated, enjoying a USO dance, and attending German and Allied field equipment and uniform briefings. World War II history comes alive each summer in Conneaut. Consider a trip to experience it for yourself.

Shane O’Malley of Waukee is our November Military Rider. Shane served in the United States Navy from 1987 to 1991 and attained a rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class, also referred to as E-4. He completed Boot Camp at the Great Lakes. After that he was in NAS Millington, Tennessee for Aviation Electrician’s School. Then he was stationed at NAS Pensacola, Florida for Search and Rescue FRAMP School. Finally he ended up at NAS Lemoore, California as his Duty Station. His primary duties were working as an Aviation Electrician for the Search and Rescue Helicopters. Shane’s grandfather (UDT) once asked him what he did in the Navy. Shane told him he was stationed in CA and we flew helicopters and picked up wounded hikers and skiers in the Sequoia Mountains, his grandfather asked what ship Shane was stationed on. He informed his grandfather, “I wasn’t on a ship, I was on land duty.” To which his grandfather replied, “Son, are you sure you’re in the Navy?” His crew flew H1 Huey Helicopters. He also worked the air terminal and the transient line. So, Shane had the fortune of working on almost every single aircraft that every branch of the military utilized.
the past 12 months got his first Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was without bikes during his time in the service and after college, as he had to support his family first. He got back into riding though as the dollars were available as he missed it and tells us he will never be without bikes as long as he can physically ride. His latest ride is a motorcycle he bought from a client. Sadly the bike had been sitting in a garage for more than three years, but Shane had the opportunity and the price was right so he got it back on the road. “My 1996 Dyna celebrates the same year I graduated college and highlights my military service. I’m looking to chop out a Sportster and paint scheme it to highlight my history at the University of Northern Iowa.” He has done some modifications to his Dyna, and wants to highlight the blue and silver paint and continue to build the bike to showcase his US Navy history.
Shane and his girlfriend like to go on many rides for causes and to bike nights. They enjoy riding for causes that they support and feel a part of. Although not a member of any clubs or associations, he has the utmost respect and interest in the VFW, American Legion, and Bikers Against Child We asked Shane if Military service has been a big part of his Abuse. He still gives back today by regularly assisting with the homeless of Des Moines, chairing a Children’s Cancer Charity Golf outing, and serving on the board for Karsyn’s Crusaders (www. karsynskrusaders.org). He adds, “The other thing the military teaches you is leadership. From having served as the Recruit Chief Petty Officer for the Color Company in boot camp in 1987 to serving as the President for the Financial Planning Association of Iowa in 2016, my years both in and after the Navy have been spent chairing, directing, or presiding over every association I’ve taken a part of. The military teaches you how to be a leader and a productive member of any and every association.” You may be thinking that Shane’s photo or name looks familiar, well that is because you may have seen Shane on his ad for O’Malley Wealth Management right here on these pages. Another thing that you cannot miss about Shane is his undying love for the country and our Service personnel. Shane has lost some good friends that passed during their service to the United States of America, and he holds them in highest regard. There are a lot of things going on in the world right now that bring along with it a great deal of sadness. First off the TRMI Tall Corn Ride contest has declared a winner again this year. In my warped brain that means the Iowa riding season is quickly coming to a close. Watching the weather and knowing the bikes will be put away soon is a real bummer. But that event is not nearly as horrific as other things happening around us. How about what is happening to our National Anthem, or more commonly known as the Star Spangled Banner surely everyone has heard at least the first stanza of that song a time or two. Well I’m not going to sing it for you because number one, I can’t sing in tune and number two if you have no idea what I’m talking about, you are either an immigrant into my country or you’re deaf and dumb. The entire song is about our flag and what it represents to this country. Now I may have brain damage from multiple blows to the head, or maybe it is the biker blood pounding through my veins that I was birthed into this great country with or maybe because I am a biker I just have a different understanding of the term RESPECT. But in my warped mind when our country’s flag is being raised whether it is going all the way to the top or only half way up that pole, the only respectful thing to do is remove your hat, your do
rag or your helmet and STAND UP, face the flag and put your god damn hand over your heart. Period… End of Discussion…. The song is a patriotic symbol of what this county has been through to protect our freedom and our rights to be a part of this great nation. Bring on the hate mail. It pisses me off that people think they can turn our national anthem and the raising of our flag into “a thing”. It is disrespectful to our nation’s veterans and the men and women of our military forces that put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe and free. When the military decides to take a knee to our national anthem and the raising of our flag I will too! Until that time comes, I will continue to respect our country, our flag and every member of the Armed Forces who puts their lives on the line for it. Now that I have gotten that off my chest. Let’s face it, the Captain America bike in Easy Rider is still one of the coolest bikes ever made and to coordinate it with a flag decorated helmet and a matching jacket talk about some eye candy. In my next life, I hope I come back as Peter Fonda, even if it is just for a day. And for those who think it is appropriate to be disrespectful to our flag and our National Anthem by turning it into “a thing”. No one expresses my thoughts on that topic better than Dennis Hopper AKA Billie in Easy Rider just before the rednecks blew him away. If I give you the bird, don’t be offended it’s only one finger away from a thumbs down. Freedom! Bikers get it. When the time finally comes that Iowa bikers are free to make the choice of parking the iron horse for the off season. I will find comfort in knowing that as long as I continue to wake up free, there will be always be another great day for riding. Saturday, November 11th is coming soon. it from there. I decided that chicken and beef combo fajitas would be just the ticket. Lynnette went with the standard beef fajita. Both of our meat skillets arrived first. We were warned to be careful because these skillets are hot! I had made that determination when my skillet was passed in front of me and I could feel the heat, see the steam and hear the sizzling!!! My skillet was covered with a bed of sliced red and green peppers and onions topped with strips of well-done steak and grilled chicken. I must confess, being the first time I had ordered fajitas, that I was surw pprised that they were th ssome-asssembly-reqquired as oopposed to things like burli rritos, that I normally oorder, that come th pre-asssembled. Lynnette’s skillet was almost identical to mine with the exception of the chicken. Next to arrive were our “fix-in’s”; the pico de gallo, ssour cream, guacamole, beans and rice. Last to aarrive were the tortillas. Now that all the playeers were assembled let the games begin!

2017 Meeting Of The Minds The 33rd annual conference presented by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation was held September 21-23 in Williamsburg, VA. The conference was filled with a ton of information on legislative issues es and the “hot topics” the MRF is currently working on. Topics such as women in motorcycling, ycling, membership retention, a session on our ur United States Constitution, recruiting volunteers, including a presentation from the NRA on standing out in today’s politics and so much more. If you have never attended one of the conferences put on by the MRF or even Iowa STEAM, which is put on by ABATE of Iowa, I highly suggest taking the time to participate in one. You will learn so much about how the real work is done in fighting for motorcycle rights from organizations such as the MRF who work at the federal level fighting for us or ABATE who works at the state levels. The theme of this year’s conference was really “moving on from the past.” There have been so many organizations and clubs that for whatever reason, in years past, have had disagreements or issues between each other. However, we have seen over the past couple of years that all of these motorcycling clubs and organizations have started figuring out that we are all in this to achieve the same goal, to keep our rights and freedoms without being profiled or legislated against just because of who we ride with or what colors we wear or what organization we belong to. this we all need to work together and put whatever disagreements there may be behind us. We all can still agree to disagree while working together to help each oother. This was a very good message sent ou out to everyone in attendance and one I completely agree with. If you are not a member of an organization such as ABATE or tthe MRF please take the time and look into it. See what we do plus the how and why we do it. We are working for you, the motorcycling public, and all we ask in return is for you to support what we are doing by spending a few dollars a year to become a member. Maybe you can even get involved and see that it’s not all work, we have a lot of fun too. Thank you to the MRF for putting on another fantastic conference. Without the freedom fighters such as them and ABATE, we as motorcyclists, would not enjoy all the things we do today. Remember strength is in numbers. dealer in Newton with Kathy, but they wouldn’t let girls test ride bikes even though the guys could. They told her she had to buy it first, so she did, and proceeded to put some 42,000 miles on it before passing it down to her daughter Kelsia. After the Honda V45, Lynn then spent 7 years on a 2005 Shadow. Last spring, I pulled into the Buck Snort in Oakland for a cheeseburger and parked beside two other bikes. Inside sat a gal and guy dressed in leather…thinking there maybe another guy, I waited. Nope, so that told me, the gal rides. I introduced myself to Lynn Lundquist and her son Kyle. It did not take long while talking to Lynn for me to figure out that she’s a true to life biker. She talked of her restless spirt, which riding satisfies, and the love of freedom she gets riding the road with her family by her side. Even when she goes to the grocery store, it is for the bare minimum just so she can ride her bike.
Her husband, Dave Lundquist, rides a good looking yellow Fat Boy (I am kind of partial to Fat Boys and the color yellow). Shortly after getting married, she did something that made a lot of people smile…she rode Dave’s Fat Boy. In 2013 she bought her own Fat Boy Lo and has put 37,000 miles on it so far.
Remember Kathy Jo Bissell? She is the older of the two sisters, and she started riding at the age of 15 on a mini bike she called a little Indian. She soon had her Honda Trail 70 riding pastures and back roads trying to stay away from the local police. Kathy was always getting into Lynn spoke about how many members of her immediate trouble, so her dad would chain and lock the bike up. She family ride motorcycles and when the count got to eleven, and Lynn would then sneak away and get into even more I thought there may just be a story here. So plans were trouble. With settling down and having kids, riding slowed down a bit but she never lost the thrill. She would put her kids on the front of her bike as soon as they could sit up and give them short rides. Could you imagine your first bike ride at age three? Kyle Phillips, Lynn’s son, is married to Liz and they have 2 girls, Adalynn and Leah. Kyle also started riding on that Honda Trail 70 and then the Honda V45 of his mom’s. He now rides a 94 HD Low Rider.

Justin Bissell, Kathy’s son, is married to Jennifer Bissell. (Yes, there are two Jennifer’s in this family). Justin is on the Street Glide.
Aaron Turlock, Kathy’s son, is married to Cassidi Turlock. Aaron also grew up on the back of his mom’s bike. His first ride was down a long hill and into the ditch. He got up, Kelsia Linthicum is Lynn’s daughter and she rides a yellow rode out, and has not looked back since. He rides a red Magna. Sportster that he got from his mom. Jennifer Shinkle, Kathy’s daughter, is married to Wade Shinkle. Jen used to ride on the back with her mother, putting the biker spirt in her blood. She dearly wanted her own bike and she made it happen. She is on the blue Fat Boy and she rode the Dragon Tail two years ago. Wade recalls riding gave him wonderful times and adventures with his father. It also gave him the chance to meet and fall in love with his wife. Wade is on a red Soft Tail Deluxe
This is certainly one great family. Now there is a song about “mommas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys”. I agree. Now if you want them to grow up to be bikers, give them rides on your bike, buy them mini bikes, let them help wash your bike, and give them a wrench. Then when they grow up a biker, there is a really good chance they will learn respect. That is the key…respect of country, respect of community, respect of their elders, and respect for fellow bikers. But the most important of all is Jennifer’s son Randall Pingree was riding a dirt bike at the the respect of what it takes keeping together and being age of 4 and at 15 he was on a Suzuki Marander.
