spring and in the fall. Large slow moving pieces of equipment are more prevalent, and will occasionally drag mud and crop debris onto the roads that we need to watch out for. Also, some wildlife like the deer will start moving more as they get frisky in the fall, and displaced from habitat by harvest equipment in the fields. These things are nothing new to deal with, but just a reminder to watch out for these things so that you can return home safe to ride another day.

Bittersweet is the word that pops ps in into nto to m my y head when I think about the month ont nth of September. Although it is nearing ingg the end of the regular riding season asson ason on for most folks, it is about the most ostt fun time of year to ride if you ask sk me. I dig rides in September for a variety of reasons. For one the intense heat of the summer is gone, and the bike seems to run better with the cooler and drier aair. ir.. ir I guess I seem to run better in the he cooler air as well, not being a fan an of excessive heat. Another reason I like to ride in September is that the hustle and bustle of the heart of riding season is behind us. We have the opportunity to be able to ride for the sake of riding, which doesn’t really happen much the rest of the riding season. So, being able to hop on, slow down a little, enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the countryside is very relaxing, even if for just a short jaunt. I enjoy rolling through the countryside throughout the spring and summer and watching as the crops grow, mature, change colors, and fields of crops start to disappear. The annual cycle of the growing season still amazes me after 48 years on this earth. It is undeniable the importance of agriculture and farmers in our Iowa economy. It is cool as hell to be able to criss cross the state throughout the summer and see the progress from ground preparation and fertilizer application, to planting, crop maintenance, and then finally harvest. Watching an abbreviated life cycle of the crops puts some things into perspective for me, and is a reminder that no matter how awe inspiring something is, it eventually lives its lifecycle and ends. It is one of the great things about Iowa, and we take our hats off to the farmers of Iowa and of America for feeding the country. When enjoying the late season rides though, we need to be mindful of some of the hazards out on the roads. The agricultural equipment shares the roads with us in the

While riding motorcycles, riders need to be wary of their surroundings. We need to watch out more closely for many things including other traffic, wildlife, road conditions, and a plethora of other hazards that can kill us. It should not be any big surprise then with the current state of the country that even when we are not on two wheels, we need to watch out for ourselves. We need to do everything that we can to ensure our own and our families’ safety. Watch out for one another, watch out for yourself, and keep your eyes open to what is going on around you. In this day and age, we need to be our own keepers, we need to keep tabs on the political climate, and we need to be able to voice our opinions when it matters. Stay safe everyone. Ride it while you can… Vernon Quote of the Month: ““You are on your own. You are not protected by two tons of steel, rubber, foam padding and safety glass. Neither are you steering two tons of guided missile toward other cars, people and property. If you are prepared to accept the responsibility of your own actions, then motorcycling can be both safe and thrilling. Riding is an art as well as a craft and no amount of explanation can take the place of experience.” Theresa Wallach, Easy Motorcycle Riding, 1970

The smiling beauty seen on this month’s cover is Dannika, standing alongside Nate Ullrich’s 1950 Ariel Square 4. Dannika can also be seen in Natanic’s Pinups 2020 biker babe calendar, available at Natanic.com. There’s another look at this fine lady in our centerfold this month, along with more details on this unique bike! 4 - TRMI SEPTEMBER 2019

We were lucky enough this summer to be able to go riding in a few other states. If we’re headed elsewhere, Mark usually remembers to check on the bike laws in those states before we leave and then inform me of any oddities that we need to remember. Here in Iowa, we’re free to go without helmets, but that’s not the case in Missouri. Anyone who loves their apes had better make sure they’re not above shoulder height if they ride into Wyoming. The most difficult rule for me Dakota’s rule stops. Both ground at light.” Ugh.

opposite truth comes into play: If God had wanted to smash us like bugs for breaking the rules, he certainly could have. But We’ve all heard stories about friends who were riding out of instead, he wants us state and were pulled over and socked with a ticket because to know him and has provided a way for that they had unwittingly committed some infraction. Often, relationship to happen. the officers of the law will have pity on the foreigners, but the bottom line is that ignorance of the law is no excuse. And for sure the argument of “I’m an Iowan and I’m riding God says this in Jeremiah 9:223 & 24: according to the laws we have back in Iowa!” will not get you off the hook. Any rational individual knows that Iowa’s ‘ “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom laws do not carry any weight outside the state of Iowa. . . . but let the one who It’s rather surprising, then, that so many of us think that we boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know Me, that I am the get to follow our own rules for living life - our own rules Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on for how to stay on the good side of God and how to treat earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.’ our fellow man. I was talking to a guy recently who was “really hoping” that he was getting into heaven because he Did you catch that? It’s not even really about knowing the had given so much money away to charity. He had also rules, but about knowing the God who made the rules! It’s cheated on his wife and misused funds that he was supposed about knowing the one whose kindness towards us caused to be administering on behalf of an organization, but in his him to allow his only son to be brutally executed in our home state (which only exists in his own mind) he “felt place, the innocent for the guilty because in any justice like” his donations should balance it all out. system sin ALWAYS demands a penalty. And only God can exercise kindness and justice in a perfect balancing act What he did not recognize is that human beings are never because he is the only one who capable of doing exactly really operating in their home state. The Bible tells us in what is right. Psalm 24:1 that “the Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it”. We’re always in God’s kingdom, which means that no matter what we’re doing we’re always subject to God’s And that brings us back to my friend, the one who was rules. Yet most of the time we try to come up with our own trying to cover his own . . . ahem . . . bases, instead of going to the Lord. He could have asked for forgiveness for belief system without ever checking on the laws of God’s kingdom to see what they say. Maybe it’s because we don’t his failures, gained a relationship with God, and quit trying to smother his conscience with charitable giving. He still want anyone telling us what to do or maybe it’s because can. we’ve been so affected by our culture that we don’t even And so can you. Won’t you accept God’s kindness today? realize what we’re doing. to stick to is South of “No California feet must touch the a stop sign or stop

Unlike arbitrary manmade rules that trip a guy up without warning, God’s laws all have the same purpose: they point the way to a relationship with him. Part of the story is that we are not capable of keeping all the rules, even if we were to memorize every one of them. That’s where our need for Jesus becomes obvious and also where the seemingly 6 - TRMI SEPTEMBER 2019

The Case for September. Stop with your “I can’t wait for fall, I love campfires, hoodies, and the leaves changing” bullshit. I am not dealing with it just yet. I am not going down that path just yet, and here is why. It snowed in MAY. Yes, that’s right, before we forget about how long summer has been and how we love the change of seasons, let us not forget that last winter, just refused to end... Ever. No, I am not done with summer; I am not ready for fall, because right around the corner, well, we all know what is facing us. Let me make the case for September. It’s a great month, it really is. August is always a weird time of the year for me, I am usually trying to cram some vacation time in yet, I have teenage daughters who are in a LOT of activities that put a great deal of pressure on any family’s free time. Let’s face it, if you have any kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews, these days schools and sports teams and clubs don’t give a damn about family time at all. There is rarely an off season. No down time and a complete lack of care if you want to be with you family for anything it seems. It’s always a full schedule and one season not only runs into the next, it overlaps. Trust me, that isn’t the worst part. Hell, like a small case of Stockholm syndrome, I am almost used to it and come to expect it, no, the worst part is the parent that is convinced that their snowflake is getting a college scholarship that very day and you just know they are the chosen one. But August is also back to school, which signals the “end of summer” and that still gives me anxiety…and I haven’t been enrolled for a very, very long time. Something about Labor Day that is just the transition holiday and it fills me with a twinge of sadness.

wings, corn liquor or whatever, never EVER bitch or complain about farmers. Not when you’re hungry, not what your belly is full. They feed us. They feed the world. Those roads are more important to them than they are us, but as I was saying, the harvest hasn’t begun, so everything that coincides with that isn’t much of a concern. The deer aren’t moving as much either. Deer are always a concern of course, but the bucks haven’t got into full on horny mode yet, so the chase isn’t quite on. September rocks. Maybe I appreciate riding this month of the year because I know it’s coming to an end. I won’t have “endless rides” coming up to blow off; there is an end in sight. You might not know what the exact day the season ends, but you know it is gonna happen soon. We always seem to get a few nice days in October, with a really warm day, the sky in October has a special hue to it, and few things can capture pure beauty more that an October leaf run on your bike, but those days end quickly and you are faced with challenges that can seem so much further away in September. I have spent an amazing number of days over the years in September doing a full on embrace of summer while riding and yet, I know it’s to an end. Hitting small town joints, catching a few moments of a game, it’s a blast. But a cool thing to ride to is the great many fall festivals that happen all over our great Thunder Roads state to ride too! I mentioned the leaf runs, and I have written about those several times over the years, but really, go out and find one…check it out. Find a small town apple festival, a harvest festival or other small town celebration. For one, they are really damn cool, they love bikers (we spend money), and there is always cool stuff to see like crafts and cars, but the greatest thing to look forward to is clearly the food. You can generally eat your way from one end of the event to the other.

Yea, I know, I know, I know. Football is on and it’s a great game but the older I get the harder it is for me to sit around and watch other people playing a game for 3 plus hours on a day when the weather is perfect. NFL, College, It doesn’t really matter, I just feel terrible watching something when I could I live for a great many things in the fall. I do love the huntbe out doing something. That is why games on are the radio, ing season, I do love the change of leaves, as a farm kid from Iowa I still hold close to me a special feeling about the harvest so you can be out doing something while listening to a game. coming up. I love seeing combines in the fields, the lines at the Ride to a bar, watch some of the game, throttle on, jam the small town elevators, and even cutting firewood for, well, that game on your bike to the next town and you are going to have a great day, unless your team just happens to suck ass that year. season coming up. I love football. But I am not done with summer and I am not letting go just yet. Don’t let September slide into October without embracing some of the best days of the year to swing a leg over and get out and explore. Like a said, find an event, make it a day, and Summer ends on the 23rd, but not many consider summer to more importantly, make a memory. Don’t go into another long, be a part of September. September, October, and November are autumn right? That is what it’s classified in weather circles. dark, cold ass winter wishing you would have gotten out more, We all switch mindsets in September, the daylight time shrinks, just do it. We all hope that we can sneak some saddle time in during October, November, or even December has offered few there is a crispness that creeps into the morning, nights cool over, the intense humidity we can taste in August is usually not hours in the past. But after this past never ending winter, I don’t trust Mother Nature as far as I can fling my shovel. around much this time of year, but yet it’s still summer. Oh, one last thing on why it’s great to ride to these festivals (rather than drive)? On a bike my wife can’t buy a bunch of I mentioned the harvest. Normally, hardly any of it takes place shit I need to haul home! Sorry babe! One jar and let’s go! in September, sure there is always an issue of watching for farm equipment on the roads and it’s just something you should Fall is great, don’t get me wrong, but summer dresses are way better than hoodies. always be aware of. Riding 101. But for the most part, September is generally light on a lot of equipment moving slowly. Here we are rolling into September; kids are back in school and we are getting down to the last few months of riding in Iowa for the year. While you’re out getting that late summer ride in remember that soon the farmers will be on the road and in the fields. I read once that the time spent behind a slow-moving tractor for two miles was the equivalent of sitting at two stoplights in town, also make sure you pass with care. Here at ABATE we are starting to look to the upcoming legislative season, one thing we were looking at last year was the Lemon Law and if we should add motorcycle to this law. One thing that our legislator wants to know is this necessary in our state and would it help the motorcyclist of Iowa. If you or you know anyone that had issues with a new motorcycle where if we had a lemon law in Iowa it would have help them, please let us know. Now go out and feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair and keep the rubber side down. David Duffy “Duff” State Coordinator ABATE of Iowa

For the month of the year that we need to “Never Forget”, we have a featured Military Rider named Justin Thompson. This cat from Council Bluffs is a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Justin served from 2003 until 2008 and attained the rank of E-4, Corporal while serving. He completed three combat tours to Iraq including Fallujah in 2004 for Operation Phantom Fury, the 2nd battle of Fallujah. His second tour was to Haditha and Haqlaniyah. His third and final tour was a Marine Expeditionary Unit that went back to Iraq. His MOS was 0311, serving as an Infantry Rifleman. He enlisted after 9-11 with his high school best friend, and they left for basic training in September of 2003. After he completed boot camp in December, they both went to Infantry school and then to the fleet with the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines India Company. They left the great ol’ USA late June and deployed to the Al Anbar Province in Iraq where they stayed for a few months in the small town of Al Karmah. Early October brought the word that they were going to be the lead element in the second battle of Fallujah which got rolling in early November. Many accounts reported that this was one of the fiercest battles since Hue City, Vietnam.

As far as his motorcycle riding, after he got done in the Military, he got his first bike and he has always had two wheels since then in one way or another. It was a way for him to cope with PTSD, and to also feel the brotherhood with other riders, and enjoy the freedom of the road. Justin started out on a Sportster, then upgraded from there to a Street Bob. That was then traded for a 2015 Street Glide, which he currently owns. He also had a 2007 Nightster that he chopped, but later got rid of. His current ride he got at Loess Hills Harley-Davidson in Pacific Junction. He wanted a blank canvas to completely customize, and once he saw the Street Glide, he knew it would be the perfect starting point for a Marine Corp themed motorcycle. This vision was coming together in his head, and getting this bike was just the start. He has replaced or modified about all of the body parts except the fairing. The bags are stretched as well as the tank, and sports a 21” front wheel with Dirty Air ride and Legends front suspension with custom USMC customized gauges. He stuck with old school HD badges and decked out the rest with Ness Deep Cut accessories. The engine was built by LHHD and barks with a Dirty Bird BMF pipe.

Justin rides with a group of friends on a regular basis. He is also the driving force After that deployment, behind an event coming up they returned home in early this month on September February of 2005, only to 14th, “OPERATION 22 return to the Middle East in August of that year. Poker Run, Silent Auction, Raffle Prizes, Car and Bike Contest, and a Burnout Contest. Events will start at LHHD On a third tour they were told that it would be a MEU at 9 am. Justin has lost some brothers in arms to Veteran so most of them extended for one last go around. This month’s feature model is a bombshell beauty named Dannika! Her rocking body and striking smile are likely to keep your eyes busy, but if you look closely there’s also a 1950 Ariel Square 4 in the photos. Ariels were built in Great Britain and aren’t commonly seen on the American roads these days. The Square 4, commonly referred to as the “Squareariel” back in the day, uses a 4 cylinder engine in a square formation, with 2 cylinders in the front and 2 in back. This particular bike was built back in the 60’s by AJ Lewis, who was well known for building British race bikes in California. Other than new paint on the tank and chrome on the rear fender, it pretty much retains its 1960’s look. Nate Ullrich had the bike shipped from California a few years ago, and is currently part of his collection in Clinton, Iowa. Dannika is one of Natanic’s Pin-ups calendar models, and you can grab at calendar at Natanic.com

For years I’ve heard many stories and conquests of fellow riders’ dreams to ride to Alaska, the Florida Keys, Canada, or whatever. Myself, I’d say I’ve seen a bit more than the average rider throughout the Midwest, so call it my midlife crisis or whatnot, but I’ve decided that living and working in Iowa I wasn’t seeing enough of this great country. So in June 2018 I left thee security of a weekly paycheck for more time to partake in such adventures. Figuring out how to pay the bills was, and still is, a constant struggle, but maybe that struggle was what I needed at this point in my life? Maybe I needed to force myself to think in more of a business sense with my photography work? Maybe I needed more time in the saddle to experience new things? Maybe I needed fewer distractions in life to focus on what’s really important? I still don’t have answers to these questions, and the decision to leave my fulltime job opened up many more questions, but one thing I knew for certain was that I needed more quality time in the wind to keep my sanity, and a 9-5 that thought they owned my life was not going to let it happen. This story is the first installment of the next 7-8 issues of TRMI, documenting my goals to ride in all the lower 48 states, while still keeping peace at home and the bill collectors at bay. As of going to print with this issue, only about 2/3 of this journey is complete, so be sure to grab future copies of TRMI to see how things play out. And we’re off… Friday, July 13th, 2018: 30 - TRMI SEPTEMBER 2019

Heading west through Iowa (state #1) with Atlanta, NE (state #2) to be the evening’s destination, where friends Jeff and Kristi K Spiegel offered accommodations a and cold c beer after a long day’s d ride. A few heavy h showers just east e of Council Bluffs required r rain gear and the helmet, but riding into NE the helmet would be required anyway. I’d packed my ¾ shell & face sh shield on top all my gear, w which seemed like a Griswold’s motorcycle vacation already, so once the helmet was unpacked, it was just easier to wear it rather than pack it on again. But in my own defense, as the publisher and photographer of Natanic’s Pin-ups biker babe calendar, I needed a decent supply of calendars for potential sales on the trip, and I had one bag of throw away clothes… Old worn out clothes that maybe had one more use, then could be thrown away rather than washed again, so I had intentions to lighten my load. Next morning the Spiegels offered up some breakfast, and Jeff pulled out his divorced tranny Ironhead for some photos that we landed in a national publication for him a couple months later. I then made my way south into Kansas (state #3) on small 2-lanes, until I jumped on I-70 into Colorado (state #4) and hit Hwy 24 into Colorado Springs. The view of Pikes Peak from behind the handlebars made for a Thunder d R Roads d Magazine M i off IIowa on Facebook F b

beautiful sight! I tried to get some cell phone pics to add to my constant “Life Behind Bars” routine on social media, but with a tent, chair, and camera tripod mounted atop my headlight bezel, they didn’t add much appeal to the any pics. I dropped south on I-25 to Pueblo, where Eryka (Natanic’s Pin-ups calendar model and former TRMI rep) offered her basement as my home base for a few days. I spent about 4 days in Pueblo, but took the first day for a 650 mile loop down to Raton, New Mexico (state #5) then Texline, Texas (state #6). Just as the name implies, this little town sits right on the state line into Texas, and my goal was to ride in as many states as possible, so I road east a bit in northern TX, before hitting a nasty storm. While stopped to put on rain gear, I admired some of the aesthetically abandoned homes and farms of the area, but also noticed and unnerving amount of fire ants. So a split second decision was made to skip the rain gear and get soaked, rather than deal with those little bastards! Hwy 385 then took me north through the panhandle of Oklahoma (state #7) then back into Colorado, where Hwy 50 took me back into Pueblo.

like a good idea until realized that I didn’t have a Colorado map on me, and my cell phone was rarely getting service. The ride was beautiful, and I had a general idea to take Pine Valley Road off of Hwy 285, which offered some beautiful red rock formations and tight twisting corners. I was due for gas and rolled in Deckers Corners expecting to refuel, but at 6:05 pm the only gas station in town had just closed and didn’t have 24 hours pumps. I still had no service to check maps, but a local told me to head south on Hwy 67 about 30 miles, which was my closest option for fuel. That was going to leave me running on fumes, if I made it, but I didn’t have any other options. So, I text Eryka with my situation and intended route, with hopes that I’d get enough service along the way to send it out, and if I did get stranded they knew where to look. As it worked out, she did get the message and I made it into Woodland Park, CO without running out of gas. Next day I rode back to Colorado Springs to stop at the Harley shop and drop off some propaganda material for Natanic’s Pin-ups. Much to my surprise, they have a small motorcycle museum upstairs in the lounge area, and first bike I spot was and Ariel Square 4, of which I’m a huge fan, considering I own one myself, as seen on this month’s cover. They have quite the selection of old bikes, including a Navy issued U model Flathead (not Army issued) some Indian 4-cylinders (I’m a sucker for 4-cylinder motorcycles) and some barn fresh beauties, along with some old choppers and bobbers. There’s no entry fee, but a donation is asked, which is well worth a few bucks.

Next day was pretty laid back with getting caught up on e-mails I had 3 main goals for this trip… and business See the Pacific Ocean for the first time, see related B.S. the Bonneville Salt Flats, and ride to Mt. I sat down Evans, which is the highest paved road in to plan out the US. Situated just west of Denver, Mt. the route for Evans was easily a day’s ride from Eryka’s, the next few so next day I took the interstates up to weeks, and Idaho Springs, CO, then the road up to Mt. Evans. I’ve made a point to take cell phone pics from Eryka’s atlas of been to 11,000 feet elevation on a motorcycle numerous planned states along the way, in case I was stuck without times, and my carbureted bike has always handled it, as was service again. Next morning I had a cup of coffee with the case this time too. But around 12,000 feet I could start Eryka, and then started heading west again. feeling the lack of oxygen on my breathing. By the time I reached the 14,130 foot summit I knew I needed to get back Nate Ullrich www.Natanic.com to lower elevation as soon as possible, so I took time for a few quick photos, and then made my way back down right Be sure to grab TRMI next month for the 2nd installment of away. Once back in richer oxygen levels, I decided to take 48 States. some backroad 2-lanes into Colorado Springs. All seemed Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa on Facebook

In light of recent events, we felt it was an appropriate time to address some common questions that many of our gun carrying readers have asked us over the years. This is not meant to be utilized as legal advice, we are not lawyers, but have been an NRA instructor teaching weapons classes for many years, and have had a permit to carry for many more before that. People tend to think that the laws surrounding carrying a weapon legally are black and white; however you may be surprised to find there are areas of gray as well.

Christy Crème 2853 North Broadway Council Bluffs, Iowa 51503 (712) 322-2778 Monday- Saturday 10 am-10 pm Sunday 11 am- 10 pm

Locally owned since 1954, Christy Crème offers delicious hamburgers sourced from a local provider of quality meats. They are even made to order fresh every time. A third-generation family-owned business, Christy Creme is a true neighborhood “mom and pop” shop. One cool thing about this joint is that they offer a new homemade sherbet flavor every day. There are 10 different flavors of sherbet that rotate on a daily basis. They even say that if you can’t make it on your favorite day that you can call ahead, and they will save you a quart for later! Now if that’s not customer service, I don’t know what is. They day that we stopped was definitely a hot one, so serving ice cream was a bonus. We pulled up outside, and there was seating in the shade, as well as a small dining area inside. Various signage let customers know the flavor schedule for sherbet, and even what the sundae of the month was. When we stopped it was a mammoth 7 Layer Sundae with pecans, chocolate and butterscotch chips, graham crackers, toasted coconut, and chocolate syrup all on top of refreshing, delicious vanilla ice cream. While the heat sure made us want to jump straight to the cool treats, we stayed focused and ordered lunch first. Vernon ordered a bacon cheeseburger and fries accompanied by a perfectly paired root beer float. The burger came out fresh and hot, with melty American cheese and crisp bacon. The toppings of fresh onion, pickles, and lettuce were the perfect cool, partners. The fries were cooked to a golden perfection on the outside with fluffy potato inside. I ordered a patty melt, and I wasn’t disappointed. It was a juicy burger tucked perfectly inside a grilled cheese sandwich, served on perfectly toasted rye bread with grilled onions. Just to be different, I ordered the onion rings as my side. They came in a large portion, thick sliced and perfectly crispy, there was plenty to share in my one side order. For my “drink” I opted for the dessert side of drinks and got a chocolate shake…and thank goodness I ordered a small, because it was a lot to finish up with. It arrived so thick; I didn’t even need the straw. I went with the standard chocolate, but you can choose from Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Hot Fudge, Caramel, Butterscotch, Pineapple, Banana, Raspberry, Cherry, Mint, or even Marshmallow when you visit. Tim was along for the ride that day, and he being far more health conscious than Vernon and I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. He also got some fries and one of the aforementioned root beer floats, so we won’t bust his chops too much for opting for “grilled” in a restaurant brimming with fried delights. His sandwich arrived expertly grilled to juicy perfection and topped with lettuce, pickle slices, and our homemade Béarnaise sauce. Tim compared the sauce to a tartar sauce, but said it was surprisingly good on the chicken sandwich. While on such a hot day it was nice to sit in the AC and gorge on ice cream, we did have things to accomplish, and waiting in the booth another 4 hours for it to officially be “supper” time seemed a bit weird, even for us, so we saddled up and headed out. But don’t worry, the next time we are in the area and have a hankerin for some good grub, we will be back for some more quality “snacks in sacks” from the historical Christy Crème.
