‘LIFT-OFF’ AT ONCOR PARK

Wylie city officials and artist John Davis toss the ceremonial first Frisbee June 2 to dedicate “LiftOff,” the whimsical new public art piece in Wylie, located at the nine-hole disc golf course in Oncor Park, 961 Brown St. Photo by Craig Kelly

ONCOR PARK HOME TO WYLIE’S FIRST AND ONLY DISC GOLF COURSE

Oncor Park offers this nine-hole course, which meanders along the creek that runs through the park’s 14 acres. Casual disc golfers will discover a tight, challenging course, and even experienced players will be satisfied by the good workout the course provides. The park features a colorful piece of art called “Lift-Off,” which was created by artist John Davis and dedicated on June 2 during Wylie’s trail art dedication ceremony. Davis used the circle and the spiral to form a colorful celebration of the essence of the park. The spiral suggests energy and propulsion of the disc; at the opposite end, a wind vane in the shape of a disc connects to the airborne aspect of the golfing activity and can give golfers an indication of wind direction, which may affect the path of long throws. Since 2006, the city has dedicated 1 percent of its capital improvement project fees to a public arts program. The funds are used to create artwork that enhances citizens’ experiences at municipal facilities, including the Smith Public Library, City Hall, Public Safety Complex, parks, and Fire Station 3. The City of Wylie, Public Arts Advisory Board, and Wylie Downtown Merchants Association host two events, Bluegrass on Ballard and the Wylie Arts Festival; funds raised from sponsorships and vendor fees go to fund public art in Wylie. “Prairie Crossing” and “Entwine,” two other art pieces, designed and installed by Michael Szabo, were also featured at the June 2 dedication. These two sculptures are located on the Municipal Complex Trail, which is part of the Wylie Trail System that was adopted in 2012. More information on Wylie parks, trails and amenities can be found on page 32.

Soccer Sparks

SOCCER SPARKS has been teaching soccer skills in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 2009. Their focus is the physical development of children and the community as a whole. Their classes are designed to teach kids the proper skills and sound principles of the game while focusing on fun in a non-competitive environment. This allows youth soccer players the opportunity to simply enjoy the sport while acquiring the necessary skill set and passion for the game without the pressure of outcomes.

COMMUNITY PARK 800 THOMAS STREET

Community Park received some improvements during the spring of 2018, including a renovated playground that features new, inviting structures and stand-alone components. The updated playground features a 13-foot-high climbing net in the center, a structure for 5-to-12-year-olds with two slides, seven climbers, and a 26-foot, built-in shade canopy. Nearby is a merry-goround, built to hold up to 10 youngsters at a time, and a rocker with seats large enough to hold several kids. There’s another playground structure, just for 2-to-5year-olds, with two slides and several climbers, also with a large, built-in shade canopy. New swing sets feature swings for older kids and younger toddlers and a very special swing that holds a toddler and a parent at the same time! Check out the unique color palette; you may notice that it’s a little different than any other playground Wylie has installed.

JOEL SCOTT PARK 424 WESTGATE WAY

Joel Scott Memorial Park is located in the Birmingham Farms neighborhood of Wylie. The park shares space with the grounds of Birmingham Elementary School. Featuring a playground, a half-mile walking trail, benches and water fountains, Joel Scott Memorial Park is a popular destination.
