BASE BALL in Victorian America

How was the game of base ball different in the Victorian era? Well, for one thing, the game’s name was two words! Base ball, which evolved from children’s games like rounders and town ball, started as a gentlemen’s club sport in the mid-1800s. Within a generation, it was a nationwide craze. This exhibit explores the evolution of the rules, the uniforms and equipment, and popular culture that made base ball “America’s Pastime.”
