E Oh, Those Victorians! E
Mourning Customs Across Cultures
In Victorian times, people’s preoccupation with death, seances, and spirits stemmed from several sources: imitation of Queen Victoria’s decades-long mourning for her husband, Prince Albert; the devastating effects of the Civil War; and advances in communication technology that made the prospect of communicating with departed spirits seem more plausible.
This exhibit contrasts the Victorians’ sometimes morbid ways of dealing with death with the celebrations and traditions of Dia de los Muertos, which has been celebrated in Latin cultures for more than three thousand years.
The Victorian Origins of Christmas Traditions
When did Christmas trees first become popular? What’s the deal with mistletoe and hanging up stockings? What does Santa Claus really look like? Many of our holiday traditions can be traced back to the Victorians–of course! Stop in the Brown House and learn more about Christmas traditions that have their origins in the mid-to-late 1800s.
