Broadcast Hysteria: War of the Worlds and Fake News
On the evening of October 30 in 1938, a 23-year-old Orson Welles played a Halloween “trick” on the public. He directed a live radio broadcast based on the 1898 science fiction novel War of the Worlds, which read like a news broadcast. In the dramatization, a meteor fell in the farmlands of New Jersey, followed by the appearance of aliens and poison gas. Welles’ production was so effective that it caused a nationwide panic — especially when he reported the Martians were invading all over the country! This new exhibit looks at the media’s ability to influence the people who view and listen.
Houdini and the Spiritualists
Famed magician Harry Houdini (1874-1926) rose to fame during the late Victorian era. For many years, he was the highest-paid performer in American vaudeville theater. While most remember him as an escape artist, he was also a skilled illusionist who once made a full-grown elephant disappear from the stage.
Following his mother’s death in the early 1920s, Houdini consulted mediums and psychics, hoping to contact his mother’s spirit. When all efforts failed, he spent the rest of his life debunking fake spiritualists, going so far as to lobby Congress to ban fortunetelling in the nation’s capital.
The Victorian Origins of Christmas Traditions
Mourning Customs Across Cultures
The Victorians’ preoccupation with death, seances, and spirits stemmed from several sources: Queen Victoria’s decades-long mourning for her husband, Prince Albert; the devastating effects of the American Civil War; and advances in communication technology that made the prospect of contacting departed spirits seem more plausible. This exhibit contrasts the Victorians’ often morbid ways of addressing death with the celebrations and traditions of Dia de los Muertos, which has been celebrated in Latin cultures for more than three thousand years.
When did Christmas trees first become popular? What’s the deal with mistletoe and hanging up stockings? What does Santa Claus really look like? Many of our Christmas traditions were made popular by the Victorians — of course! Visit the Brown House and learn more about these traditions, take a peek inside Santa’s workshop, and see our display of themed Christmas trees. Last year there were nine! We’ll bring back many of last year’s favorites, with some new ones that are sure to get you in the holiday spirit.
