Godey’s Lady’s Book: Victorian Fashion and Culture

Godey’s Lady’s Book, which published its first issue in 1830, was the most popular and wellknown magazine for women in the Victorian era. Each issue featured literature, poetry, sheet music, children’s activities, and most importantly, full-color clothing illustrations inspired by French and English fashion plates.

Godey’s offered American women a connection to European haute couture, and today, the magazines provide a detailed record of the progression of women’s fashion.

Sarah Josepha Hale, the magazine’s editor from 1837–1878, was a writer and activist who advocated for women’s education and other social causes.

View a through-the-decades fashion exhibit and discover the many accomplishments of Sarah Josepha Hale, the most influential American woman of the Victorian era.

Kate Greenaway and the Aesthetic Movement in Children’s Clothing

Victorian fashions were all about extremes. We think of enormous hoop skirts and tight corsets for ladies, and little girls often dressed the same as their mothers.

The aesthetic movement in children’s clothing, strongly influenced by children’s author and illustrator Kate Greenaway, advocated for loose clothing for little girls so they’d be free to run, jump, and climb trees.
