The Ladies of the Pinkerton Detective Agency

In the Victorian era, men’s and women’s roles were clearly defined. So when a young widow named Kate Warne applied for work as a detective at the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1856, the agency’s founder, Allan Pinkerton, initially turned her away. Warne refused to take no for an answer and impressed Pinkerton by stating that a woman could infiltrate a variety of situations where a man could not.

After Warne successfully foiled a plot to assassinate President-elect Abraham Lincoln in 1861, Pinkerton put her in charge of his new Female Detective Bureau. This new exhibit delves into the daring exploits of Kate Warne and other ladies of the Pinkerton Agency.

The Importance of the Conductor’s Watch

Since humanity first began keeping track of time, they set their clocks to the local movement of the sun. As railroads began to shrink the travel time between cities from days or months to mere hours, the differing local times caused a scheduling nightmare. Efficient rail transportation demanded a more uniform time-keeping system. The powerful railroad companies took it upon themselves to create a new time zone system which Congress eventually adopted. Discover how each railroad conductor used his watch to keep rail travel moving safely and on time.
