ABOUT THE ARTIST “Entwine” and “Prairie Crossing” were created by artist Michael Szabo. Szabo, a native of the San Francisco Bay area, creates large-scale, site-integrated sculptures that speak to the environment they inhabit. He uses stainless steel and bronze mostly, and his work explores the relationship between art, landscape and architectural spaces.

NEWEST PUBLIC ARTWORK SPEAKS TO COMMUNITY ROOTS

“ENTWINE” BLADE DETAIL

“Entwine” and “Prairie Crossing,” the newest pieces of public art, are being installed along the Wylie Municipal Complex walking trail adding still more appeal to the scenic paved path that winds through meadows and across creeks and bridges. They are the creations of artist Michael Szabo, who spent time in Wylie prior to submitting his designs, acquiring a feel for the community and the nature of its inhabitants, past and present, as well as the terrain of the trail and the municipal complex, with its portion of the Blackland Prairie that is being restored.

The artist used brushed stainless steel and bronze with a rich patina to create the six blades that seem to dance like prairie grass in the wind. The satin finish of the stainless steel reflects the surrounding environment, while the reds, browns, greens and blues of the bronze evoke the changing colors of the prairie grasses through the seasons. Dramatic up-lighting enhances the sculpture, making it even more visible in the evening hours. “A glow that emanates from the center of the piece signifies the core connection Wylie has made between its roots of the past and sprouts to the future,” Szabo said.

“Entwine” is located near the intersection of FM 544 and Country Club Road and is visible from the street as well as the trail. Standing 30 feet tall, the abstract sculpture is reminiscent of prairie grasses and is a tribute to the tenacious spirit of the people of the Wylie community, as well as the hardy meadow.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Soon to be installed on Brown Street east of Country Club Road, “Prairie Crossing” is an archway created of stainless steel and bronze ribbons, crisscrossing each other and calling to mind the beautiful chaos of blowing prairie grasses. The sculpture’s slender pieces, reaching 10 feet at their highest point, are meant to give visitors a feeling of being “in” the prairie. Under the arch, a 50-foot seating bench invites walkers and joggers to sit in the shade for a rest or conversation. In the evening, up-lighting creates a dramatic view from Brown Street and for those on the trail enjoying a nighttime walk.

”Wylie city officials believe that accessible and appealing public artwork is important to the quality of life in the community, and that it enhances enjoyment of public parks, open spaces, and city facilities,” said Carole Ehrlich, city secretary and liaison to the Wylie Public Arts Advisory Board. “Since 2006, the city has dedicated 1 percent of its capital improvement project fees to a public arts program. FOUNDERS PARK 851 HENSLEY LANE

This athletic complex was recently renovated in 2010, with the addition of six new soccer fields, two new softball fields, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, two concession stands with restrooms, and 1.8 miles of 10-foot-wide trail. The park features an original work of art, “Catch,” designed by nationally known sculpture Madeline Weiner, which consists of two figures carved out of solid, dolomitic limestone – a thrower and a catcher. Spend an afternoon at Pirate Cove Playground, which is nestled in the northeast corner of the complex. This playground is the largest in Wylie and was part of a community build several years before the park was renovated.

COMMUNITY PARK 800 THOMAS STREET

Community Park hosts Wylie’s youth baseball association and provides practice spaces to many of the other youth associations in Wylie. This athletic complex was renovated in 2012 to feature four new baseball fields, concession stand with restrooms, and 1.05 miles of 10-foot-wide trail. As guests approach the baseball complex at Community Park, they are greeted by two figures, one on either side of the walkway. Ten-foot-tall “Batterpillar” holds five bats, ready to take a pitch from his adversary, “Octopitcher;” at 9 feet tall and 15 feet in diameter. These pieces of art were designed and installed by Johnny Edwards. In addition to athletic fields, Community Park will have a new playground coming in the spring of 2018. Next to the playground a large pavilion (reserved for a fee), can accommodate 50-100 guests for birthday parties or family reunions.
