LIFE IS GOOD WITH PARKS WE ARE FORTUNATE TO LIVE IN A FRIENDLY AND VIBRANT COMMUNITY LIKE WYLIE. ONE OF THE MANY THINGS THAT MAKES OUR CITY SUCH A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE IS OUR PARKS. THE PLAYGROUNDS, RUNNING TRAILS, PICNIC PAVILIONS, ATHLETIC FIELDS, AND OPEN SPACES WE ENJOY ARE A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR IN WHAT MAKES LIFE IN WYLIE SO GOOD.
Parks provide a bounty of benefits to people and places. Here in Wylie, we enjoy great parks and all the good things that come along with them. Organizations like the Trust for Public Land and the National Recreation and Park Association study how parks impact communities, and have identified many benefits that come from having parks. In broad terms, many of the benefits of parks can be classified into one of four categories: Public Health, Economic, Environmental, and Social. Parks are the perfect place for people to engage in physical activity. Here in Wylie, we’ve seen hundreds of people out walking, running, and riding bicycles on our Municipal Complex Trail. They’re making the most of our park land, and using the trail to improve their health. In fact, access to parks and open spaces has been shown to lead to more frequent exercise. The more frequently people exercise, the healthier they are. Exercising in the park also exposes people to nature, another health benefit of parks. While you’re running the trail, you’re also soaking up the natural beauty of your surroundings, and that dose of nature can help people be healthier, both mentally and physically. Studies have shown that even having a window in a hospital room can help sick people get well faster. Those recuperative benefits are multiplied when you’re actually outside in nature. Parks also extend economic benefits to communities and the people that live therein. Notably, parks have been shown to increase property values. Dr. John Crompton from Texas A&M University has studied this phenomenon, and concludes that “people are willing to pay a larger amount for a property located close to parks and open space areas than for a home that does not offer this amenity.” Those higher property values represent not only a bonus to homeowners, but to the community as well, through higher property tax revenues which can be used to fund more parks or other infrastructure. In Wylie, we’ve seen great interest lately in the development of new neighborhoods that include extensive parks. Many developers are taking the initiative to build the parks first to attract homebuyers. And in many cases, those parks are being dedicated to the city for use by everyone. They aren’t just limited to the homeowners in the development.

MUNICIPAL COMPLEX TRAIL CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Parks also provide numerous environmental benefits, and the entire community can be impacted by these. Trees are one of the most important parts of a park’s environmental mission, because trees are great at abating pollution, cooling the air, and cleaning storm water runoff. According to the U.S. Forest Service, a 50-year-old tree can generate $31,250.00 worth of oxygen over its lifetime, and recycle $37,500.00 worth of water over that same span. These actions help clean the air, water, and land around us, and make the world a better place to live. Trees can also remove ozone and carbon monoxide from the air. Tree leaves, roots, and the soil around them can remove polluted particulate matter from rainwater before it reaches storm sewers and makes its way back into our waterways. Trees can reduce the heating effect of concrete and glass in the city. Between the shade a tree provides and the transpiration of water vapor through the leaves, a single large tree can have the same cooling effect as a room-sized air conditioner. Large wooded areas such as the ones near the Municipal Complex or along Muddy Creek in Wylie are working hard to make our environment better.
Another important social benefit of parks is the potential for reduced crime in communities that have robust Parks and Recreation programs. Especially among youth, the presence of recreational facilities can provide an outlet for time and energy that might otherwise be spent getting into trouble. Also, by virtue of providing common areas where neighbors can gather, parks provide a stronger sense of community and belonging which can help reduce crime. We’re proud of our parks, and we know that the benefits they provide are very important in crafting the special character of Wylie. Information for this article was taken from “The Benefits of Parks: Why America Needs More City Parks and Open Space” by Paul M. Sherer. Published by the Trust for Public Land 2006. For more information, go to www.tpl.org
One of the most obvious benefits of parks is social in nature, but it’s still a very important one. Here in Wylie, we know how much it means to have parks like Olde City Park where we can gather for events like National Night Out, and come together as a community of friends and neighbors. All parks can provide this sense of community, because they are natural gathering places for groups of people, whether it’s a family celebrating a birthday or an entire city celebrating a holiday.

MORE SPACE TO RUN, WALK, BIKE, AND HIKE IS COMING SOON! A MILE AND A HALF OF ADDITIONAL MUNICIPAL COMPLEX TRAIL WILL BE PLACED IN THE MEADOW TO THE EAST OF THE CITY’S MAIN CAMPUS THANKS TO A COLLIN COUNTY GRANT.
WYLIE PARKS = 700+ acres of parkland and open space
In those parks, you’ll find over 10 miles of trails, 15 playgrounds, and 8 pavilions available for reservation, soccer fields, baseball fields, football fields, a nine-hole disc golf course, a cricket pitch, and much more. Over the next few years, the Parks and Recreation Division plans to continue implementation of the 2012 Trails Master Plan, which will increase the miles of trail in Wylie to better connect you with your community.

EUREKA PARK
OLDE CITY PARK
Eureka Park provides outdoor recreation opportunities for citizens who live on the eastern side of Wylie. The Wylie Parks and Recreation Board asked the students of Akin Elementary to participate in renaming the park, which had been named Cimarron Estates Park. The name “Eureka,” was selected by the Junior Master Gardening group at Akin Elementary. With a picnic pavilion, basketball court, cooking grills, and a half-kilometer walking trail, this linear park has something for everyone! And, in 2017, the Parks and Recreation Division will be installing a new playground!
Nestled in the heart of downtown Wylie, Olde City Park provides a popular place to gather, play, and celebrate. The park is home to our Veteran’s Memorial, which is managed by the local American Legion post, Hale-Combest 315. Majestic mature oak trees frame the park, and provide shade for Wylie’s largest playground. Check out the mural on the North side of the park, depicting scenes from Wylie’s history. The pavilion and gazebo at Olde City Park are available for rental, and might just be the perfect place for your next party!
