WYLIE CITIZENS ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT PARKS,
AND WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEM. HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED WYLIE PARK SYSTEM QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.
How can I find out where all the parks are located? Visit the ‘Find a Park’ page on the City’s website, http://www. wylietexas.gov/parks/find_a_park/index.php. There, you will find a list of all parks, addresses, links that lead to location maps, and amenities.
TOP QUESTIONS ABOUT WYLIE PARKS HOW DO I FIND A PARK? CAN I RESERVE AN ATHLETIC FIELD? WHAT IS DISC GOLF? Photo: Joel Scott Memorial Park
Can I reserve a pavilion? How much does it cost? The pavilions at Community Park and Olde City Park may be reserved for $25 per hour; $10 per hour with the Wylie Resident discount applied. The Pavilions at Eureka Park, Kreymer Estates Park, Riverway Park, Friendship Park, and Valentine Park may be reserved at no cost. To make a reservation, call 972-516-6340 or email Parks@WylieTexas.gov. Are the sports fields available for reservation? Local youth sports leagues have priority use of the fields. During the spring season, February 15 until June 14, and fall season, August 15 until December 14, there may be some limited availability of softball fields ‘C’ and ‘D’ at Founders Park, and soccer field ‘1’ at Community Park. Reservations cost $10 per hour, plus $18 per hour for lights, where applicable. Reservations are limited to one and one-half hour per team per week. We begin taking reservations for the fall season on August 2, and we begin taking reservations for the spring season on February 2. If you would like to reserve field space during the spring or fall, call 972516-6340 or send an email to Parks@WylieTexas.gov. During the summer and winter, the fields are often closed for maintenance, however when they are open they may be used at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis.
How long is the Municipal Complex Trail? Are there plans for more trails? The Municipal Complex Trail is approximately one mile long. There are distance markers along the trail at the quarter-mile points. Thanks in part to a $500,000.00 grant from Collin County, the City will soon begin placing another 1.6 miles of trail around the meadow to the East of the complex. A pedestrian bridge will connect this trail to the Creek Hollow neighborhood. The 2012 Trails Master Plan provides a blueprint for developing the trail system. Find a copy of the trails master plan online http://www.ci.wylie.tx.us/parks/ master_plans/index.php.
Who designs the landscaping at City Hall? Most of the landscaping at City Hall is designed and maintained by the City’s Parks Division. The large planting pots, for instance, are changed out twice a year with plants selected by the Parks Field Supervisor. The landscaping in the breezeway between the Recreation Center and the Library was installed through a partnership between the City of Wylie and the North Texas Municipal Water District, and was designed by landscape architects from the Huitt-Zollars design firm. That area was designed to be a demonstration garden of drought-tolerant native and well-adapted plants for the region.
Does Wylie have a disc golf course? Where is it located? How do you play? A nine-hole disc golf course is located at Oncor/Lavon Park at 961 East Brown Street. Disc golf is played in a manner similar to traditional golf. Count the number of times you throw your disc between the tee area and the basket to calculate your score. Lowest score wins. Learn more at http://www.discgolf. com/disc-golf-education-development/how-to-play-disc-golf/.
May I dedicate a tree or other amenity in a park to a loved one? We are happy to help with memorial markers and dedicated items in the parks. We have a few guidelines that we can share with interested parties. If you would like to inquire about placing a memorial plaque or other item in a park, please email Parks@WylieTexas.gov or call 972-516-6370.
Does Wylie have a skate park? A skate park is located at Joel Scott Memorial Park, 424 Westgate Way. Structures include a variety of freestanding ramps and other obstacles. There are no age restrictions for using the skate park.
Is smoking or e-cigarette use allowed in city parks? Per city ordinance 2014-18, smoking and e-cigarette use is prohibited on any City property, including parks. May I launch model rockets in a park? Model rocket launching in parks is allowed by permit only. To request a permit, email Parks@WylieTexas.gov, or call 972516-6370. If you have other questions or need additional information, please contact Parks@WylieTexas.gov or call 972-516-6370.

AWESOME EXPERTS JANET EPSTEIN is an educator who is passionate about fostering a love of learning within children. She spent 23 years in primary public education as a teacher and an administrator. In 2015, she decided it was time for her passion to take on a new venture. Her love of science, math, and engineering led her to Challenge Island. It is her hope that all children will discover new capabilities within themselves and come away with a desire to learn more about all things related to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). AMBER SMITH has been sewing since 1992. Her passion for fabrics, stitches, and embroidery stem from her mother who taught her the art of sewing and quilting. At the age of 11, Amber began selling her sewn items and handmade doll clothes. Amber strives to boost hand-eye coordination, selfconfidence, and creativity within her students. She has taught sewing at Hancock Fabrics and held private lessons since 2011. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS AND ATHLETES is geared toward preparing children for the world while having fun! Children participating in the SSA activities experience improved flexibility, strength, motor skills, and gain an overall better sense of well-being. Children learn how to maintain these benefits through nutritional education, exercise education, and understanding the link between physical and mental health. Children experience boosted self-esteem, the ability to focus and be more alert, reduced stress levels, improved communication skills, and a more positive outlook.
