HAVE YOU NOTICED A CHANGE IN THE LANDSCAPE AT WYLIE RECREATION CENTER AND SMITH PUBLIC LIBRARY? THE COMPLETELY RENOVATED LANDSCAPE BEDS, DESIGNED TO BE WATER-SMART, PROVIDE A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE OF LANDSCAPE DESIGN USING PLANTS THAT ARE WELL ADAPTED TO OUR NORTH TEXAS CLIMATE. In 2014, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) approached the City of Wylie with a proposal to construct a water conservation demonstration garden at the Wylie Municipal Complex. The Parks and Recreation Division jumped at the chance to partner with the NTMWD in a way that not only helps beautify the property, but also provides a service to our citizens.

THE CONSERVATION GARDEN SHOWS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE AN EXCITING AND ATTRACTIVE LANDSCAPE AND STILL CONSERVE WATER

In order to bring a high level of exposure to the project, the City chose to locate the conservation garden in the breezeway between the Recreation Center and the Library. The NTMWD completely financed the project, and the City provides ongoing maintenance and care of the garden. The planting plan, developed by Huitt-Zollars, includes significant input from City Parks and Recreation staff. The new landscape design is comprised of over 85% Texas native plants that are proven performers in drought conditions.

Construction began in March of 2015, and included renovation of the irrigation system to provide drip irrigation, amendment of the soil with compost, and planting of the new plant material. Interpretive signage Photo: NATIVE PLANTS LOCATED located in the garden area describes the project and BETWEEN THE LIBRARY AND gives visitors a blueprint for creating a similar garden at Wylie Parks & Recreation REC | Activity Menu | Jan May 2016 Stellar | QUESTIONS? Grass, Blackfoot Daisy, and Coneflower are only some of the many plants found in the Conservation Garden. One bed was designed to showcase native prairie plants also found in the Blackland Prairie Restoration area north of the complex. The garden was completed in August of 2015, and the City took over operations in November. The recent droughts expose the importance of conserving water. It is estimated that nearly one-third of all residential water use goes to landscape irrigation nationally. The Wylie Conservation Garden shows that it is possible to have an exciting and attractive landscape and still conserve water. For more information about the Conservation Garden, or the selected plants, please contact the Parks and Recreation Division at 972-516-6370 or at parks@ wylietexas.gov.

PHEASANT CREEK PARK

OLDE CITY PARK

Located in far Southeast Wylie, Pheasant Creek Park provides a ribbon of green space for the Pheasant Creek Addition. In 2012, the City of Wylie received a grant from Collin County to begin developing the park. The city chose to concentrate on the northern edge of the park, and began installing improvements in the spring of 2013. The park now boasts a playground, pavilion and the first leg of a trail that may eventually connect to Rockwall County. Solar-powered lighting fixtures have been placed in the pavilion and along the trail, to provide for light after hours without requiring the consumption of fossil fuels.

Located in Historic Downtown Wylie, Olde City Park is a focal point for many of the celebrations and events that knit our community together. Featuring a pavilion, playground, gazebo, bbq grills and trail, the park is a cherished destination for Wylians young and old. The Park is also home to Wylie’s Veteran’s Memorial, which is managed by the local office of the American Legion. The park is always a part of our downtown events, like Boo! On Ballard, the Pedal Car Race, Bluegrass on Ballard, and the Christmas Parade. Many other events find a home at Olde City Park throughout the year as well, and there’s always a welcoming smile for everyone.
