E Oh, Those Victorians! E

Victorian Influencers

Base Ball in the Victorian Era

How was the game of base ball different in the Victorian era? Well, for one thing, the name of the game was two words! Base ball evolved from other sports like rounders and town ball and it grew popular nationwide during the Civil War. The Cincinnati Reds formed the first professional team in 1869. Though the game is very different now, there are teams nationwide that still play by “vintage rules.”

The Aesthetic Movement in Children’s Clothing

Victorian fashions were all about extremes. We think of enormous hoopskirts and tight corsets for ladies, and little girls often dressed the same as their mothers.

Who was the Gibson Girl—and why has she been compared to the Kardashians? The creation of artist Charles Dana Gibson, the Gibson Girl was thought to be a composite of several women. When his illustrations appeared in print cartoons and advertisements in the early 1900s, they influenced both the beauty standard and the attitudes and leisure activities of the middle class. Stop by the Brown House and learn more about evolving pop culture in the late Victorian era.

The Importance of the Conductor’s Watch

Since humanity first began keeping track of time, they set their clocks to the local movement of the sun. As railroads began to shrink the travel time between cities from days or months to mere hours, local times became a scheduling nightmare. Efficient rail transportation demanded a more uniform time-keeping system. The powerful railroad companies took it upon themselves to create a new time zone system which was eventually adopted by Congress. Discover how each railroad conductor used his watch to keep rail travel running safely and on time.

The aesthetic movement in children’s clothing, strongly influenced by children’s author and illustrator Kate Greenaway, advocated for loose clothing for little girls so they’d be free to run, jump, and climb trees.
