STEM Challenge

Be the next great Olympian. Enhance creativity and problem-solving skills, discover robotic design, and improve hand-eye coordination. Examine the concepts of machine programming and engage in competitive LEGO robotic challenges. Build a variety of mechanisms on laptops and battle opponents’ gadgets. $15 supply fee payable to instructor at the first class.

Bring your ideas to life. Apply real world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture to design a mini golf course, complex forklifts, and the iconic Big Ben Clocktower using thousands of LEGO bricks. Sanchez, owner of 8Bit Education, is an ITT Graduate with Honors in the area of media technologies. He has been teaching throughout the Dallas Metropolitan area and has been working with Dallas International since 2011. His goal is to prepare students for the evergrowing IT markets. ANGELA DANIEL teaches Creative Confections and Card Making. She has been working for the City of Wylie since 2010 and at the Senior Recreation Center since 2016. CODE ARMADILLO is owned and operated by Homero Sanjuanero. Homero has been a bilingual school educator since 2008. Homero believes that all children should have access to the newest technologies and software without obstacles. He thrives on creating unique curriculums that combine STEAM with core academic subjects. Homero has a passion for teaching all things coding, robotics, and Esports to the youth.

EXPERTS CONTINUED LAURA HUDDLESTON is an outstanding Personal Trainer. She is certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, Behavior Change Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist. She has taught and trained since 2003, both in the U.S. and abroad, teaching her first cycling class in China in 2004. Her areas of experience include metabolic resistance, heart rate, and body weight training as well as detoxification, nutrition training, and much more. Laura is passionate about helping people become the best versions of themselves through the cultivation of healthy habits. Awesome expert for Wylie Recreation since January 2013. KATHARINE ISBELL, a Registered

Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance, has completed over 500 hours of yoga training and has been teaching in the Wylie area since 2008. Her specialty is Gentle Flow Yoga in which poses and flows, chosen to suit the student’s abilities, are sequenced into a coherent practice. LORI JAYNES teaches Latin Aerobics. She considers herself a late bloomer in the exercise world, but believes it is never too late to begin a healthy lifestyle. Lori began working for the Senior Recreation Center in 2016, and received her Zumba Basic certification in 2017, and Zumba Gold certification in 2018 in order to share her passion for dance and music with seniors. Lori’s goal is to get you moving and show that exercise should be about having fun. Awesome expert for Wylie Recreation since October 2017.

GINA KATIN has been coaching

volleyball since 2011. She plays competitive sand volleyball every week, but her true passion is teaching kids. Gina has coached all ages, from kindergarten all the way through high school. Her classes focus on the rules, plays, and techniques of volleyball. Gina’s goal is to coach in such a way that kids become confident with handling the ball and acquire a love for the sport. MATT KRUSE leads Model Masters and Texas Hold ‘Em instruction. Since joining the Senior Recreation Center staff in 2013, he has become the goto handyman and card dealer. Matt is an experienced woodcrafter who can build anything from cabinetry to decorative figurines. Matt perfected his woodworking and whittling skills while growing up on the family farm. He loves to teach others the trade. Awesome expert for Wylie Recreation since June 2014. ERIN LAREW has a passion for both people and Zumba that led to her becoming an instructor in early 2009. Erin brings a positive, vivacious attitude to the classroom, and it is reflected in her dance style. Classes are lively and interactive. at Wylie Senior Recreation Center. She has been part of the Senior Recreation Center team since 2016 and strongly believes in expressing yourself through art. DAL SANDERS, founder of the Dallas Magic Academy and former Ronald McDonald, has been teaching and performing magic since the 1980’s. Dal has performed all over the world, appeared on variety of television shows, and served as the President of the Society of American Magicians. Dal has a passion for sharing his love of magic with kids. He believes that magic connects people together and teaches vital interpersonal skills. SKYHAWKS has been a leader in

providing safe, fun, and skill-based sports experience for kids since 1979. They pride themselves on teaching sport-specific skills to all children of varying athletic levels. Skyhawks has a vision that every child should experience the joy and benefits of sports. They emphasize critical life lessons, such as sportsmanship, teamwork, and winning and losing with grace. Skyhawks’ goal is to teach life skills through sports.

AMBER SMITH has been sewing since 1992. Her passion for fabrics, stitches, and embroidery began with her mother, who taught her the art of sewing and quilting. At the age of 11, Amber began selling her sewn items and handmade doll clothes. Amber strives to boost hand-eye coordination, self-confidence, and creativity within her students. She has taught sewing and held private lessons since 2011. Awesome expert for Wylie Recreation since January 2013. SOCCER SPARKS has been teaching soccer skills in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 2009. Their focus is the physical development of children and the community as a whole. Their classes are designed to teach kids the proper skills and sound principles of the game while focusing on fun in a non-competitive environment. This allows youth soccer players the opportunity to simply enjoy the sport while acquiring the necessary skill set and passion for the game without the pressure of outcomes. Yarns. Michelle has been working at the Senior Recreation Center since 2015. She has been crocheting since she was a teenager and continues to learn new stitches to bring to her students. Michelle enjoys sharing what she has learned with others and loves seeing the joy on students’ faces when they understand a concept or master a new skill. DAN THOMPSON holds a black belt in karate. He began training in martial arts in 1990, beginning with four years of tai chi and then moving on to karate. Dan wants to share his experience, knowledge, passion, and skills with his students. Dan believes karate is a lifelong activity and that there is always a new skill, technique, and move to learn. Awesome expert for Wylie Recreation since January 2019. RICH VERDE has been teaching guitar and piano lessons since 2000. He earned his associates in music from Richland College. Rich believes that music enriches lives, and brings joy and happiness to those that hear and play music. He is enthusiastic and dedicated to teaching music to the next generation, and fosters an environment for kids to believe in themselves and tap into their creativity. He is committed to the musical arts and enjoys sharing his passion to students. LESLIE WILLIAMS is a health and fitness enthusiast. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science and was a springboard diving coach for five years. Leslie has been teaching Boot Camp classes since 2016. One of her favorite aspects about the Boot Camp format is that it is a group activity. This builds community and allows people to encourage each other and grow stronger together. YOUNG REMBRANDTS teaches basic to advanced drawing skills, art techniques, and vocabulary. Using a step-by-step method, every student is a creative success. Since 1997, Young Rembrandts has used technical drawing skills to break down complex objects into familiar shapes and increase student creativity, helping students to turn their drawings into astonishing masterpieces. Young Rembrandts’ unique method also improves fine motor skills, patience, focus, and the ability to stay on task. Awesome expert for Wylie Recreation since February 2012. ANGELA JACKSON is the founder

of Metropolitan Charm and Modeling, and executive director of The Miss Denton County Scholarship Pageant. Since 1999, Angela successfully participated in numerous pageants. She progressed from modeling in rural Southeast Texas to the DFW area, and continued to model and compete in pageants while in college. She credits her success to manners classes, modeling training, and pageant prep workshops. Her longtime mentor is nationally recognized Ada Duckett of the Miss Texas/Miss America organization. PLAY-WELL originated in 1997 when Tim Bowen had the idea to get kids engaged and excited about the concepts of engineering, architecture, and physics using LEGO. Play-Well’s mission is to help kids solve problems, provide an opportunity for creative expression, and develop teamwork skills through building elaborate objects and collaborating with their peers. Sure thing! As long as the child’s parent/legal guardian has signed the waiver and listed you as an Authorized Pick-up/Drop-off person. As for fees, you may choose either the Per Visit fee option or one of the Punch Card options.

May I purchase a Punch Card and Rec Day Pass in the Childcare area? Registrations, purchases, and financial transactions are conducted at the front desk. Any required fees for use of childcare are due prior to admittance at the front desk.

Can you feed my toddler or change my baby’s diaper? Bring the kids fed and in a clean diaper or potty trained so you may maximize your workout time. For safety, food, drink, and gum are prohibited. Water in a spill-proof plastic cup is ok. We will come get you for your child’s diapering or toileting needs.

Who is staffed? Childcare is supervised at a staff to child ratio of 1:6. The maximum number of children permitted in Childcare at one time is 18. Staff may use discretion to lower that number based on the age and needs of participants.

Participate in a fit and fun lowimpact workout. This unique curriculum accommodates the needs of people who have trouble standing on the floor to exercise. Wylie Senior Recreation Center offers your choice of four treadmills, four recumbent bikes, two Aviron rowers with lumbar support, an elliptical machine, Inflight Fitness Vanguard Multi Gym, stair stepper machine, exercise balls, and various hand weights to keep your exercise routine exciting. Pick up literature featuring nutritional guidelines and healthy living tips. If an indoor workout is not for you take a stroll at Wylie’s Community Park located outside the Senior Recreation Center.

648 Acres of Parkland and Open Space In those parks, you’ll find over 18 miles of trails, 18 playgrounds, and 11 pavilions available for reservation, soccer fields, baseball fields, football fields, a nine-hole disc golf course, a cricket pitch, and much more. Over the next few years, the Parks and Recreation Department plans to continue implementation of the 2012 Trails Master Plan, which will increase the miles of trail in Wylie to better connect you with your community.

ONCOR PARK AVALON 961 E. BROWN STREET PARK

DODD PARK

This park offers Wylie’s first and only disc golf course. The nine-hole park meanders along the creek that runs through the park’s 14 acres. Casual disc golfers will discover a light challenging course, and even experienced players will be satisfied by the good workout the course provides. The park features a colorful piece of art called “Lift-Off,” wherein the artist included a circle and spiral to form a colorful celebration of the park’s essence. Parking is available at the course, and patrons may also want to take advantage of the parks and trails in the Kreymer Estates subdivision just across Brown Street. Visit Oncor Park and try your hand at disc golf, you may find it enlightening.

Adjacent to Dodd Elementary School, Dodd Park is a special use park located off of Country Club Road and Park Boulevard. Two baseball backstops and two soccer fields are available for use on a first-come firstserved basis Monday through Friday. This park is home to the first and only cricket grounds in Wylie and is currently designated for use by five different cricket organizations every Saturday and Sunday. Come experience what Dodd Park has to offer and broaden your recreational knowledge with the sport of cricket.

1312 E. BROWN STREET Avalon Park is one of Wylie’s special use parks located at the intersection of Kreymer Lane and East Brown Street. This space provides practice facilities on a first-come first-served basis for youth soccer, football, baseball, and softball on the east side of town. In the spring of 2021 a new vinyl-coated chain link perimeter fence was installed due in part by the increased usage of these fields, and new soccer goals were installed to accompany the two existing baseball backstops. Five pedestrian entries are included throughout the fence making it a safe transition from the sidewalk into the park. If you are looking for a conveniently located field for your team’s practice, consider visiting Avalon Park.
