Oh, Those Victorians!

Sweet Land of Liberty

The anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence was first celebrated on July 4, 1777 with parades, speeches, and fireworks. Over the next one hundred years, Independence Day became the most important secular holiday on the calendar, and in 1870, Congress declared July 4 a national holiday. In the Victorian era, even the far-flung settlers on the western frontier congregated on Independence Day for picnics, entertainment, and, of course, fireworks!

School

Days in Wylie: Then and Now

If a child of one of Wylie’s early settlers could see a school supply list for the upcoming 2023-24 school year, what would they think? How would today’s kids manage the school books, tools, and rules from the turn of the 20th century? The exhibit delves into the history of Wylie ISD, the Birmingham Trust’s legacy of giving, and other dedicated community members who exemplified The Wylie Way.

Wylie and the Wider World: Johnston Inc.

In 1957, Wylie’s mayor David Click orchestrated the relocation of the Johnston Clothing Manufacturing Company’s factory, sales office, and general administration offices to Wylie. Johnston helped our city rebound from the effects of the Great Depression and held the honor of being the largest industry in Wylie for many years. Local children who got their back to school clothes at the outlet store on Ballard Avenue wore the same fashions that were sold nationwide in department stores like Neiman Marcus.
