WHY IS
MULTI-SENSORY
PLAY IMPORTANT?
he City of Wylie park system strives to offer a variety of amenities, throughout its nineteen playgrounds, that provide sensory benefits to create excitement, challenge, and help kids enjoy playing together.Â
T
The City of Wylie Parks and Recreation Department selects playground equipment that provides multi-sensory play experiences that encourage movement, balance, touch, and visual stimulation. Children are encouraged to play by way of graduated range of challenges, equipment groupings, and varied degrees of difficulty. Active spaces are offset with passive zones and areas that encourage cooperative play. Physical activity encourages growth and development, healthy weight, strong bones and

We can’t stop smiling at this photo (sent by his mom Alecia) of Noah Babiuch, swinging in the new all-inclusive swing at Wylie Lakes Park. Alecia says Noah is swinging up a storm. “It means so much to our family and to Noah to be able to do something that all the other kids are doing.”
muscles, heart health, and much more. Playground amenities like climbing nets and bars promote movement. Visit parks like Eureka Park to find a variety of activities including hand-spinners, swings, and slides. All-Inclusive Swing Seats are available at Wylie Lakes Park and Eureka Park. Opportunities for cooperative play are also widely available in the Wylie park system. Cooperative play develops sharing, taking turns, obeying rules, teamwork, and negotiating skills. Some of the Wylie playground systems include cooperative features like built-in tic-tac-toe games and see-saws. A merry-go-round will soon be added at Kirby Park. Physical balance provides an overall benefit to a child’s health by developing coordination and guarding against injury. Balance beams, levels, and stairs, located throughout the Wylie park system, promote and develop balance. A climbing net, a great balance activity, is located at Community Park. The sense of touch, another important aspect of playground activity, gives children the sense of presence and helps them explore the world. The feedback from the sense of touch makes decisions possible, and helps young minds develop emotional connections. Texture and tactile surprises are plentiful throughout all playgrounds. At your next visit to Olde City Park, encourage your child to spend a few extra seconds discovering the climbing wall surface. Visual stimulation found in parks helps children understand the world around them. Information captured by sight encourages learning and comprehension. The farm-theme at Stone Ranch Park, is one example of how the elements of color, texture, and theme come together to accomplish visual stimulation in Wylie Parks.
Equally important to visual stimulation is passive space. Areas of limited distraction provide creative young minds with rest and reset. Kirby Park will soon be upgraded to include some very special passive spaces. Learning is also developed by way of graduated range of challenge and challenge groupings in the park system, where the difficulty level accommodates a variety of ages and abilities. All Wylie Parks include aspects of varied challenge. Wylie parks aim to help develop the abilities and captivate the imagination of every child. In early 2020 an inclusive swing will be added to Friendship Park, along with a new modular playground structure and stand-alone components. The Parks and Recreation Department plans to continue to add inclusive swings as well as other playground pieces throughout the park system.
