FRIEND-POWER IS STRONGER THAN WILLPOWER Wylie, Parks and Recreation advances community health and well-being through vital services, programs, and opportunities. Wylie Parks and Recreation addresses physical, mental, and social needs with parks, trails, and open spaces, exercise classes, wellness opportunities, access to healthy food and social services, a safe environment for children, and much more. The Wylie Parks and Recreation Department delivers these critical services by connecting Wylie citizens with community events, camps, drop-in and open play activities, childcare, and classes.

IN

Wylie Recreation Center Supervisor, Annika Sacco, often observes new friendships made on the fitness floor, during classes, camps, special events, and in childcare. Annika has noted, “when surrounded by people and staff that see you, elevate you, and support you, anything is possible. The feeling of connection is important to our guests.” Cassandra Braithwaite is able to practice her self-care routine on the fitness floor with friends while her boys are in Childcare. She brags, “The childcare staff welcome me and my boys. Childcare really helps me be able to workout free of guilt or worry that I need to hurry up because the boys are not having fun, because that is not the case.” To Tosha Kimball, mother of Wylie Rec Kids Madison and Morgan, there are added social benefits of Wylie Parks and Recreation for her girls, “it brings them out of their comfort zones and lets them meet and socialize with a different pool of kids.” Parent’s Night Out helps her girls “build social awareness and communication skills’’ and “work on their physical fitness.” When something feels hard to accomplish, it can be challenging to stick to it. We are in the business of creating connections; when participants come together and make new support systems, wellness goals become obtainable. Barbara Marks, Wylie Recreation Center guest since 2012, knows friendpower is stronger than willpower, stating that “every time I wanted to quit, there was always someone there whether it was staff or another person walking. We would share health goals together. There was

accountability and community.” Joining the Recreation Center has “been a life changer” for Barbara and now the Senior Recreation Center is also a part of her favorite social wellness activities. At the Senior Recreation Center she wants to “learn something new, do something new, and go somewhere new.” Wylie Parks and Recreation to Nic Ngoc is “a place to get plenty of exercise and provides opportunities to participate [in activities] to improve your health.” He keeps his social health active with friends made from walking the indoor track at the Recreation Center and the Municipal Complex trail, and a support system from classes and activities at the Senior

Wylie Recreation has been a godsend since I moved here in 2013. Staff and my friends tell me, “Keep it up,” giving me the motivation to keep it up.

— Janie Jones-Adams, Wylie Recreation Guest

Recreation Center. Nic encourages others this January to “take advantage of what the city has to offer, whatever you want, it’s there,” and reminds others “there are always people that you can join, socialize with, and make new friends.” This January, let us help you jump-start your healthy lifestyle, maintain a target weight, train for an athletic event, or set a whole-body wellness goal. Wylie Parks and Recreation offers a range of options to spark connection with self, family, and community while meeting your fitness and wellness needs.

Join in the month-long health and wellness celebration and make “fun” and “social” part of your healthy lifestyle. (See details on page 6.)

FOUNDERS PARK

COMMUNITY PARK

AVALON PARK

Founders Park Athletic Complex is home to various Wylie youth sports associations. This complex features eight soccer fields, three football fields, four softball fields, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, two concession stands with restrooms, and 1.8-miles of 10-foot-wide trail. The park features an original work of art, “Catch”, designed by nationally known artist, Madeline Weiner, which consists of two figures, a thrower and a catcher, carved out of solid dolomitic limestone. Spend an afternoon at Pirate Cove Playground, which is nestled in the northeast corner of the complex. This playground is the largest in Wylie and was part of a community build in 2004.

Community Park hosts Wylie’s youth baseball association and provides practice spaces to many other associations in Wylie. This athletic complex was renovated in 2012 to feature four baseball fields, concession stand with restrooms, and 1.05-miles of 10-foot-wide trails. In addition to athletic fields, Community Park features a playground with two modular structures and a 13-foot tall climbing net and a three bay swing set. Next to the playground a large pavilion (reserved for a fee), can accommodate 50-100 guests for parties or gatherings.

Located a quarter mile east of Fire Station 3 on Brown Street, Avalon Park is one of Wylie’s special use parks solely utilized as overflow practice space for Wylie youth sports associations. In 2020 this park was renovated with four new soccer goals and a 4-foot tall, black coated chain link perimeter fence to ensure the safety of park patrons. In addition to the soccer goals, this park features two backstops and plenty of open space to practice the sport of your choice.
