BIKE, RUN, WALK, OR MEANDER ALONG THE MUNICIPAL COMPLEX TRAIL THE NEW ONE MILE SCENIC TRAIL BEHIND THE MUNICIPAL COMPLEX JOINS COUNTRY CLUB ROAD TO BROWN STREET, CONNECTING VISITORS WITH THE NATURAL SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF WYLIE.
This summer, Wylie residents can look forward to utilizing a new trail that connects the intersection of FM 544 and Country Club Road to Brown Street near Sanden Boulevard. This 12-foot-wide, one-mile long Municipal Complex Trail will traverse the grounds surrounding the complex, going down the old roadbed of FM 1378, looping around the meadow behind Wylie Recreation Center, and then diving through the woods, where a 20-foot pedestrian bridge has been installed to take walkers, runners, and bikers over the creek and into the meadow east of the creek line. From there, the trail will meander along the tree line to Brown Street, near the Sanden Blvd intersection. From that point, pedestrians may follow the Brown Street sidewalk east as far as Ballard Street, or west back to Country Club Road.
PEDESTRIAN CONNECTIVITY Photo: The new 12-foot wide trail winds around the Wylie Municipal Complex, from Brown Street to Country Club Road, just north of FM 544
The south trailhead will be immediately opposite Lakefield Drive on Country Club Road to allow pedestrian crossings to and from the Parkside neighborhood. The north trailhead will be on Brown Street just west of Sanden Blvd, and a trail connection to the north may be established in coming years.

This is the first leg
of what the Parks Division hopes will be the start of a more elaborate trail network at the Municipal Complex. Two concrete spurs will connect this first part of the trail to the building complex, one near the Rita & Truett Smith Public Library, and one to the south of the City Hall entrance.
Near the Library, the new main trail will follow the contours of the existing natural surface trail which was installed by the Blackland Prairie chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists. This natural trail loops around the meadow north of the Municipal Complex where the prairie restoration program is in progress. Trail users who wish to experience the native prairie first-hand may turn off the concrete trail to follow the natural trail around the meadow north of the complex parking lot. As the trail winds through prairies, woods, and riparian areas, visitors will be exposed to several of the different natural ecosystems that exist in our region. Observant trail users can expect to experience many native flora and fauna as they explore the trail. Wildflowers will greet visitors in the spring and summer seasons, and native grasses and trees will provide a natural backdrop to the trail year-round. The Parks Division will install benches along the trail where users may take their ease to enjoy nature.
The City’s 2012 Trails Master Plan identified the area near FM 544 and Country Club Road as a major trail gateway and intersection, and pedestrian connectivity to the complex is a high priority for the City of Wylie. The Municipal Complex Trail will prove to be an important component of our trail system in years to come. This trail section will contribute to the establishment of the Municipal Complex as a vibrant, active hub for the City of Wylie, and as a quality place for citizens to gather and participate in events, civic activities, and recreation. Construction of the trail has been funded largely through grants, one from the Collin County Parks and Open Space Program in the amount of $215,000, and one from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in the amount of $200,000. An additional $55,000 will be funded by the City of Wylie from the Park Land Acquisition and Improvement fund.

JOEL SCOTT MEMORIAL PARK
ONCOR PARK
Joel Scott Memorial Park is located in the Birmingham Farms neighborhood of Wylie. The Park shares space with the grounds of Birmingham Elementary School. Featuring a playground, a half-mile walking trail, benches and water fountains, Joel Scott Memorial Park is a popular destination. The park also boasts Wylie’s only skateboard park, featuring free-standing elements such as ramps and grinding rails on 4,200 square feet of concrete surface. A pavilion can be found adjacent to the skateboard park, and a parking lot is available.
The park offers Wylie’s first and only disc golf course. The nine-hole park meanders along the creek that runs through the park’s 14 acres. Casual disc golfers will discover a tight, challenging course, and even experienced players will be satisfied by the good workout the course provides. Parking is available at the park, and patrons may also want to take a look at the new parks and trails being built in the Kreymer Estates subdivision across Brown Street.
