BIG CHANGES AT PLAYGROUNDS IN WYLIE PARKS PLAY IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT. WHEN CHILDREN PLAY, THEY ARE DEVELOPING SOCIAL SKILLS, PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITIES, IMAGINATION, AND A SENSE OF CONNECTION.

Bella Carten, a 9-year-old Birmingham Elementary student, was so excited about the new playground equipment at Olde City Park that she wrote to Mayor Eric Hogue, suggesting that he have a ribbon-cutting ceremony when it was ready to go. The mayor agreed, and on March 22, he slid down one new slide and Bella slid down the other, as other city officials and friends held the red ribbon. The playground was officially declared open for business – and fun!

OLDE CITY PARK NOW FEATURES A CLIMBING ‘ROCK,’ SEVERAL SLIDES, OVER 40 PLAY EVENTS, AND ROOM FOR MORE THAN 80 KIDS TO PLAY. Photo: RIBBON CUTTING AT OLDE CITY PARK IN DOWNTOWN WYLIE WITH MAYOR HOGUE

New playgrounds have been popping up in Wylie’s parks this winter and spring. To better serve our citizens, and provide more opportunities for play, the Parks and Recreation Division managed the installation of new play equipment at Olde City Park, Creekside Estates Park, and Pirate Cove Playground at Founders Park. At the Pirate Cove playground at Founders Park, swing sets were replaced with modern steel units. The wooden swing structures were beginning to require more maintenance attention, and Parks staff recognized that a more durable steel structure would be better able to endure the attention that Wylie’s children shower upon that playground. As a bonus, there are even more swings at the park now. Parks Division employees moved the playground fence out a little bit to make the necessary room, and installed new safety surfacing under the swings. The area re-opened in April.

The playground at Olde City Park formerly included a mixture of pieces that had been added one at a time over the years, and some of them were starting to show their age. Since the park sees abundant use, especially during the many special events that happen in Downtown Wylie, Parks staff wanted to provide higher capacity and more interesting play experiences. In 2015, the City Council appropriated $100,000.00 to buy and install the new playground. The play structure features integrated shade covers, which will help keep the area a little bit cooler in the summertime. This was an important consideration for Parks staff, and one which is sure to prove popular with users. Featuring a climbing ‘rock,’ several slides, over 40 play events, and room for more than 80 kids to play, this playground has already proven to be a hit. The Creekside Estates Homeowners’ Association approached the city in 2015 with a generous offer: a donation of $30,000.00 to go toward building a second playground in the northern part of the neighborhood. The park land was already there, but had not yet been developed. The city was happy to accept that very generous gift, and matched it dollar-for-dollar. Money

for the city’s match came from the Parkland Acquisition and Improvement Fund, which is comprised of fees paid by developers when new construction occurs in the city. With a total budget of $60,000.00, the Parks Division was able to not only purchase the playground structure (which has already been installed) but also plan for a sidewalk extension, a shade structure, benches, and picnic tables. The swing set which was formerly at Olde City Park will be re-painted and installed there as well, adding that much more fun to the playground. Construction is still underway, and the Parks Division anticipates that the new play area will open in early May. Play is an important part of childhood development. When children play, they are developing social skills, problemsolving abilities, imagination, and a sense of connection. It is important to the City of Wylie that we offer the finest possible avenues for our children to enjoy themselves and build these skills. A day in the park may seem like nothing more than a lot of fun, but there are benefits to playing that will last a lifetime. We are grateful to work in a community that recognizes the importance of play and recreation.
