PRAIRIE RESTORATION IN WYLIE

PRAIRIE RESTORATION IS UNDERWAY AT THE WYLIE MUNICIPAL COMPLEX IN 2011, THE CITY’S PARKS AND RECREATION DIVISION PARTNERED WITH THE BLACKLAND PRAIRIE CHAPTER OF THE TEXAS MASTER NATURALISTS TO WORK ON RESTORING THAT AREA TO NATIVE CONDITION.
When European settlers first began to traverse the North American continent, the prairies they encountered stretched from Canada to South Texas, and from Missouri to Colorado. The grasslands were so immense, that they gave the impression of being an inland sea of plants. These prairies were part of an extensive and complex ecosystem that supported an array of wildlife including rabbits, moles, lizards, turtles, and hundreds of species of birds. These prairies were shaped by frequent wildfires that cleared shrubs and trees and stimulated the growth of the prairie grasses.
LESS THAN 1% OF THE BLACKLAND PRAIRIE REMAINS. LEARN HOW WYLIE IS AIDING IN RESTORATION EFFORTS. Photo: Inhabitants great and small call the Wylie Municipal Complex prairie “home”
Texas was largely covered by a mixed-grass prairie, a transition between the tallgrass prairies to the East and the shortgrass prairie to the West. Right down the middle of the state, from the Red River to San Antonio, was 12 million acres of Blackland Prairie, so-called because of the rich, dark soil that gave life to the prairie. That soil was part of an environment that was well-suited for agriculture, and early settlers soon began transforming the landscape to build their farms. Agricultural practices, cattle grazing, tile drainage, and a reduction in fires contributed to the shrinking of the prairie. Today, less than 1% of natural prairie remains. In North America, the prairie is the most endangered ecosystem.
In North Texas,
only 8,000 to 10,000 acres of Blackland Prairie remain intact, and that area is spread across hundreds of small tracts. Our landscape looks very different from the one our forefathers saw when they first settled this area. We’re thankful for the progress that innovation and technology have allowed us to make, but it’s important to the human soul to have a connection to nature in its natural state. Native prairie grasses grow in a very different form from imported grasses such as Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass, or St. Augustine grass. Those imported grasses form a dense turf, which is ideal for lawns or grazing livestock. Prairie grasses are typically bunch forming, which encourages an abundance of wildlife to live and roam in the spaces between bunches. Small birds and mammals, such as quail and ground squirrels, rely on a habitat structured in this way.
Conservation groups in Texas, and across the Great Plains, have been working diligently to begin restoring native prairies so that we can enjoy and learn from them. Restoration is a challenging endeavor that takes time, patience, and hard work. Results are not always immediately obvious, but the benefits of allowing the land to return to its natural state are such that the wait is worthwhile. Many invasive and imported plants, like Johnsongrass, KR Bluestem, and Bermudagrass, must be removed or otherwise eradicated from the prairie so that the native plants can flourish. The native prairie grasses, like Big Bluestem, Sideoats Grama, Buffalograss, Little Bluestem, and Switchgrass often must be started from seed, then nurtured until they establish and start to spread. Fortunately, these grasses are happy to thrive here, since this is their natural home. Wildflowers also play an important part in a prairie ecosystem. In the Blackland Prairie, you can find Foxglove, Gayfeather, Lemon Mint, Plains Coreopsis, Primrose, Prairie Verbena, Texas Yellow Star, Winecups, and many others. Many of the prairie wildflowers are plants known as forbs, which are non-woody, non-grass flowering
plants. Sunflowers are a good example of a forb. These are plants which die back to the ground in the winter, and produce flowers when growing. Here in Wylie, a prairie restoration project is underway in the North Meadow of the Wylie Municipal Complex at 300 Country Club Rd. In 2011, The City’s Parks and Recreation Division partnered with the Blackland Prairie chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists to work on restoring that area to native condition. The Texas Master Naturalist program is a partnership between the Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension Service, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and many local volunteers. Since being established in 1998, Master Naturalist volunteers have provided over one million hours of service, enhancing and protecting over 90,000 acres of wildlife and native plant habitats, and reaching more than 2 million Texas citizens through their efforts.

Master Naturalist Dave Powell shares a number of interesting finds with Shohn Rodgers, Parks Manager
In the last three years, Master Naturalists have built a half-mile trail loop through the restoration area, with entrances on the North and East sides of the Municipal Center parking lot, and have sown over 20 pounds of seed. They have also begun harvesting seed from growing plants to be re-seeded in other areas of the prairie. Several test plots for various prairie plants have been established to see what will work best on Wylie’s little patch of prairie, and work is continuing on eradicating non-native, invasive plants. Prairie restoration is a slow process, but we are beginning to see some very exciting results from all the labor that has gone into this prairie so far. As more native plants are established and begin to thrive, they will encourage more and more growth and the prairie will really begin to flourish. n Wylie Parks & Recreation | Activity Menu | Jan - May 2015 | QUESTIONS? KIRBY PARK
FRIENDSHIP PARK
Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in central Wylie, Kirby Park is the City’s smallest developed park. But, massive shade trees, picnic tables, barbecue grills, and a play area help this little park deliver a big value for outdoor recreation. This is a perfect spot to recharge your batteries in the heart of the city. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the only spider in Wylie that you can climb on!
This 4.9 acre open space park is located at White Ibis Way and Scottsdale Drive. A quarter-mile concrete trail circles the park, which includes a pavilion, modular playground, picnic tables, grills, and a basketball court. The park also boasts a pet-friendly drinking fountain, which was donated to the City in the Summer of 2014 by Girl Scout Troop 3343. Friendship Park was named by the students of nearby Dodd Elementary School.
