THE CITY OF WYLIE HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION AS A TREE CITY USA. THIS DESIGNATION MARKS WYLIE AS A COMMUNITY THAT IS DEDICATED TO THE CARE, PRESERVATION AND EXPANSION OF ITS URBAN FOREST. Since 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation has sought to inspire the planting, care and celebration of trees. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The program provides national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities. Reports show that over 125 million people live in a Tree City USA. This is Wylie’s first year to be named to this prestigious program. To qualify for Tree City USA, a town or city must meet four standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation and its partner organizations. The four standards are: a tree board or department, a community tree preservation ordinance, an Arbor Day proclamation and observance, and a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2.00 per capita. Over the last three years, the Parks and Recreation Division has worked to make sure we meet those standards, and submitted the city’s successful application in November of 2013.

125 MILLION

PEOPLE LIVE IN A TREE CITY USA.

Now Wylie residents do too. Photo: Pecan tree, Olde City Park

“Communities that are honored with a Tree City USA designation make a strong commitment to planting and caring for trees, and we applaud their efforts,” said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. “We also commend a community’s elected officials, volunteers and its citizens for providing needed care for its trees. They recognize that trees provide numerous environmental, economical and health benefits for the community every day.” We hope that Wylie’s inclusion in this program will be a source of pride for our citizens. As committed stewards of our natural resources, we know that the citizens of Wylie benefit from cleaner air, shadier streets, and the aesthetic beauty that healthy trees provide. As a Tree City USA, we hope to increase public awareness of the environmental, economic and social benefits of a well-maintained urban forest. Look for signs to be placed at the entrances to the city in the near future. About the Arbor Day Foundation - The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit, environmental and education organization of more than one million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information on the foundation and its programs can be found at www.arborday.org.

PHEASANT CREEK PARK

OLDE CITY PARK

Located in far Southeast Wylie, Pheasant Creek Park provides a ribbon of green space for the Pheasant Creek Addition. In 2012, the City of Wylie received a grant from Collin County to begin developing the park. The city chose to concentrate on the Northern edge of the park, and began installing improvements in the spring of 2013. The park now boasts a playground, pavilion and the first leg of a trail that may eventually connect to Rockwall County. Solar-powered lighting fixtures have been placed in the pavilion and along the trail, to provide for light after hours without requiring the consumption of fossil fuels. We look forward to completing this stage of the park development this year. In the coming months, look for landscaping and trees to be installed, as well as a few more benches and litter receptacles.

Located in Historic Downtown Wylie, Olde City Park is a focal point for many of the celebrations and events that knit our community together. Featuring a pavilion, playground, horseshoe pits, gazebo, bbq grills and trail, the park is a cherished destination for Wylians young and old. The Park is also home to Wylie’s Veteran’s Memorial, which is managed by the local office of the American Legion. The park is always a part of our downtown events, like Boo! On Ballard, the Pedal Car Race, Bluegrass on Ballard, and the Christmas Parade. Many other events find a home at Olde City Park throughout the year as well, and there’s always a welcoming smile for everyone.
