what art means to triumph

Each quarter, students in Sara Willson’s art class prepare pieces that are displayed in the art hallway for other students at Triumph to admire. The pieces displayed are usually the artists’ best work from that quarter and the artwork can be anything from drawings and sculptures to paintings and graphic designs. Along with the artwork, students will typically write an artist statement that explains the meaning behind the piece and how the artist felt while making it. I interviewed Sara Willson, our art teacher here at Triumph, and asked her why she thinks the art show is so important and how it helps creativity grow. She told me, “Showing what the art students made inspires other students to make art and helps them share the messages of their art with other people.” She said that, “Creativity grows from all life experiences, not just art, and there is no wrong way to make art.” While looking over her student’s art she added, “My students come up with ideas I would have

never thought of.” Sara continues to encourage students to express themselves with art. For many students, including the ones at Triumph, art is an escape and a stress reliever. Art provides challenges for learners at all levels and reaches students who might not otherwise be engaged in classwork. Art also Improves mental health and promotes mental calmness. By doing artwork you will be able to take your mind off stressors and have a relaxing distraction. If you are interested in the benefits of art and improving your art skills, look into getting involved in art. Students at Triumph are able to choose from drawing, sculpture, painting, ceramics, and graphic design each quarter. This allows them to try new things and further develop their art skills.

At Triumph High, every student attends a quarter-long program called Discovery before they become an official Triumph student. The program teaches students the building blocks of Triumph’s culture and the skills they will need to succeed in the building - including interpersonal skills, effective communication, anger management, and the Spartan Strong ex-

pectations. The Discovery Program is one of the main differences between Triumph and other high schools in LCSD1. Once every quarter a “Re-Discovery Day” is held. Students are put into small groups where they navigate their way through various stations around the school. Each station is meant to reinforce the skills learned in the Discovery program. “Participating in Re-Discovery activities definitely helped me with my communication skills. I usually just keep to myself, but during the activities I had to talk to my group members. Everyone in my group was really supportive, so it helped me learn to open up to others,” said Emily Torres. The day serves as a helpful refocusing of skills and is a great way to start each new quarter at Triumph.

Triumph’s very own School Store is opening soon! By popular vote, the school store is going to be called “Spart Mart.” The Spart Mart will offer Triumph High School apparel and accessories, such as hats, masks, cups, and keychains. The Spart Mart will also be selling specialty culinary items from the culinary classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays after school. Spart Mart will be located in the commons area of Triumph. Triumph’s business classes are all working together to get

Spart Mart up and running smoothly. The Entrepreneurship classes will serve as the management team and the Marketing classes will be conducting the marketing parts of the shop. Lastly, the Money 101 class will be doing the financing and the money functions of the store. The DECA club is considered the board of directors. Leigh Ann Ojeda, Triumph’s Business Teacher, said the classes have been super busy working on the project and are planning for a grand opening the first week of February.

Wyoming State Parks Have Begun Collecting Taxes

As of January 1, Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails will begin collecting sales and lodging taxes to comply with Wyoming State Statues 39-15-101 and 39-15-201. Tax rates will vary by county and will be collected on fees for overnight camping, annual camping permits, reservations and overnight rental facilities such as cabins, lodges, yurts and treehouses. The Wyoming State Museum, 2301 Central Avenue, will kick off 2022’s Family Day schedule with “Ice Age” on January 8, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The story of Japanese immigrants in Wyoming has many faces. Civic League Accepting Grant Applications

The General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) Women’s Civic League of Cheyenne is accepting grant applications. American Legion Post 6 Oratorical Contest

The American Legion Post 6, 2001 East Lincolnway, Oratorical contest, which awards hundreds of dollars for scholarships to advance one’s education, is to be held at 1:00pm on January 15, at the Post. The contest is open to students in the 9th through 12th grades and consists of oratory involving one’s knowledge of the U.S. Constitution. Students are judged on a prepared orientation of 8-10 minutes and an assigned extemporaneous presentation of 3-5 minutes.
