East High School News Thunderbirds Make the Most of a Busy Summer

Marching with Rocket Man By Challeni Riddle In preparation for the upcoming state marching band competition, the East High Marching Band went to Estes Park for band camp. The ideas behind the time at camp are to build relationships, focus on timings and presentation, and practice songs for State. The EHS marching band is known as one of the strongest programs in the state. This year’s show features the music of Elton John, aka The Rocket Man. The band spent time perfecting John’s hits such as Funeral for A Friend, Love Lies Bleeding, I’m Still Standing, Your Song, and Saturday Night’s Alright. The band started the camp with music practice, where they worked on rhythms and articulation, so that the instruments blended well together. After just the first two and a half hours of practice, faces were fatigued, lips sore, and bodies worn out. “Even after one night all I wanted to do was sleep,” said Kate Good.

“But in my room, there was no way that was going to happen.” Kate and her roommates, Emily Schwaiger,10, Ella Neider,10, Morgan Sutherland,10, Lana Novotny,10, and Samantha Chernogorec,10 spent the time laughing and bonding. No one got enough sleep to be awake for the day ahead of them. The next day brought a 6:00 AM wake-up call and a four-hour marching rehearsal, where they did fundamentals and started learning the first drill set. Day 3 was even tougher. On the fourth day, the group went home knowing the first two drill sets and having one song memorized. “My band camp experience was as fun-filled as always,” said Alex Duran, 11. “It caused me to bond better with the freshmen and some of the previous marchers. But I can’t say how because what happens at band camp stays at band camp.”

T-Birds Named 5280 Yearbook Camp Champ By Liz Carey Summer is supposed to be three months of relaxing and taking a break from school. It marks the end of another long school year. But for one small group of Thunderbirds, summer is the time to buckle down and get ready for the coming fall. In late June, several members of the 2019-2020 journalism staff went to Golden, Colorado, for the 5280 Journalism Workshop, where they put together their ideas for the yearbook. The three-day conference entailed day-long workshops and meetings with the publisher representatives, artists, and their staff. The EHS group represented both returning members and new members, each with a little different set of expectations. “Knowing that we were going to have a lot of newer students coming with us, I thought they wouldn’t contribute and would hold us back,” said junior Cristiona Morales. “Instead they put their ideas forward and really helped pull things together.” Morales attended the 2018 camp, so she knew what was going to

happen. However, for the new members they had no clue. “I thought there were going to be way more arguments,” said junior Bailey Miller. “It was stressful, but I thought it was going to be more emotional.” Something that a lot of people don’t know is that journalism has its own competitions. From local workshops to national conventions, young journalists are always looking to out-write, out-design, or outplan their competition. This year’s class was thrilled to earn a first-place finish in design and layout, the camp’s biggest honor, and the privilege of being called Yearbook Camp Champ. “At first it didn’t seem like we won because they messed up the whole result,” said Morales. “It was a Steve Harvey moment, but when they announced us, I was shocked. We had never won before and it felt like we really accomplished something.”

Taking Care of Business in Texas By Bailey Miller In late June, the East High chapter of Future Business Leaders of America headed to the national FBLA convention in San Antonio, Texas. FBLA is recognized as the largest business student organization in the world, and student chapter representatives made appearances from across the globe. FBLA has 230,000 members and 5,200 chapters, all meeting once a year to meet and compete against each other. Cheyenne East High’s chapter had the opportunity to bring ten students, competing in business events including spreadsheet application, personal finance, emerging business issues and electronic portfolio. The Thunderbirds, as well as the rest of the chapters from across Wyoming and the world, spent the week nervously waiting for results

of hundreds of events, touring the famous River Walk, visiting the Alamo, enjoying some down time at a Missions baseball game, and networking with other chapters. Senior Dylan Raymond went to nationals for the first time and competed in Personal Finance. “My favorite part about Nationals was meeting people from across the country who share similar interest as me,” says Raymond. “FBLA has definitely taught me to be more comfortable talking to people and shown me interests I didn’t know I had before”. The East High chapter hopes to really focus on the 2020 competition and double the numbers for next year’s national experience.

From raising livestock to community service to creating ag awareness, the East High programs are leaders in the state. When summer rolls around and it’s Fair time, Thunderbird Nation is right there. The EHS 4H and FFA both had major accomplishments at the Laramie County Fair and Wyoming State Fair. These Ag students raise and show different species of animals from cattle to swine to goats to rabbits and more.

Crafters Needed for Destiny Church Fair

Cheyenne Laramie County Health Department now has u vaccine available for ages six months and older. They currently offer egg free, preservative free, Fluzone, and High Dose. The inuenza virus is a very contagious and potentially serious, even deadly, disease. The CDC recommends everyone six months of age and older get the u vaccine this year. Those individuals at high risk of serious complications from inuenza, babies, young children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions, are encouraged to get the u vaccine by the end of October. Protection develops about two weeks after the vaccination. Get vaccinated today to reduce the spread of inuenza to family members and others in the community. Appointments and walk-ins are welcome.
