East High School Races to Fall Finish Line

The hardest moment in any indi vidual’s high school career is the mo ment when one more time becomes one last time. One more competition, one more performance, one more speech, one more event - one last time. As the fall season begins to wind down, the East High students prepare to finish strong, celebrating their successes across the school.

The East High School marching band recently boasted a high ranking of superior at their state competition, along with four caption awards for music, marching, woodwind, and color guard superiority.

“[State] was so emotional,” senior drum major Davin Ro stated. “I’m so proud of this band and I’m so proud of everything we accomplished.”

Ro was selected by the band to serve as one of the drum majors. A drum major is the student leader of the marching band and is responsible for providing commands to the ensemble, leading them while marching, and directing them what to play, when to play, and what time to keep.

“I don’t like the idea of the drum majors being the ones that lead the band because, in reality, all we are is eye candy,” continued Ro. “We don’t do anything musically to put more sound on the field. It’s up to the band to put in that work and they did. All we did was stand on a podium and keep tempo for them.”

The band worked through several invitationals and performances throughout the year to prepare for their state performance. They meet on the football field twice a week for the entirety of their season for two hours. The band additionally goes to every home game for football to march and play pep band tunes.

“It was a great season,” fellow senior drum major Johann Bartels agreed. “I’m really proud of the band and especially how we killed it at state. I tried not to cry, but I did tear up a little. The senior speeches… I just loved all of them. It was so emotional. I’m so happy that we man aged to finish the season without any hiccups like last year. Everyone talks about being sad that it’s over, but I’m just glad it happened.”

In addition to the marching band’s success, the East High football team is rolling at the top of the polls and gearing up for play-offs. Taking one practice at a time, the football players look forward to the team’s competitive season to amp up as they aim for the top with every game that comes their way.

“We’re having a really good year,” football coach Stephen Hesford commented. “The kids are working really hard and we’re having success.”

The varsity squad has had another strong season. After starting 4-0, and earning the #1-ranking, the T-Birds took a tough 42-39 loss to Sheridan. The Birds then rolled rivals Central High and South High to push their record to 6-1. East will close out the regular season at home against Kelly Walsh.

“They will continue to fight hard to maintain the momentum,” says

Hesford. “We’re just focusing on this next week and getting ready for Kelly Walsh and hopefully get after them. We never talk about what’s going to happen at play-offs until we get to the playoffs. We just focus on the week ahead.”

The football seniors will be hon ored before the 6:00 PM kickoff.

The marching band and foot ball team are rolling through the fall season. The EHS student council keeps the spirit alive at school with orga nized fall events.

With Halloween approaching, they’re planning a safe trick-or-treat for October 30, the Sunday before the actual holiday. Student body president, Kooper Taylor, shared the inside scoop on the event, along with plans for decorating classrooms.

“We do (Safe Trick-or-Treat) with people inside of our school triad and even people outside of our triad,” Taylor shared. “It’s really an all-ages thing so anyone who wants to come can participate. The student council and a bunch of other clubs host their own rooms for that inside the school. We already have our room design and our theme, so we’re all really excited to have everyone see it.”

The inclusivity of the event is part of what makes it so highly anticipated every year. The student body strongly encourages students in the area in and out of East High to come and join in on the fun. The entrance fee is a single donation at the entrance of a canned food or non-perishable food item or even clothing that will be donated.

While Safe Trick-or-Treat is widely known across the school, it’s not the only thing the student council has planned.

“We also do a breast cancer awareness thing,” Taylor explained. “We’re going to be handing out pink ribbons to all of the staff and teachers and to the students coming into the school. It’s our big pinkout day across the school.”

The fall season is packed with events and competitions, so each East High team will put in their best effort as they race to the fin ish line to end as powerfully as possible, one more time.

Ac cepting gently used or new adult and kids’ bikes. Adult bikes being their main focus. Bike locks and helmets are also accepted. Bikes will be given to veterans in need of transportation at the Veterans’ Stand Down on October 25. This bike drive is part of a grant received from AARP to support veter ans in need of transportation. Grant money will be used for needed bike repairs.
