In an address given at the Royal Albert Hall back some years ago, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones expressed what some Bible students feel about the many translations that still come from the press, in the excuse that “this one makes it clearer.� Many things expressed here are worthy of deep thought. Another translation is not the answer. Perhaps what Mark Twain, the famed American humorist, once said has more truth in it than at first meets the mind. “Some people are greatly concerned about those passages of scripture they don’t understand. The ones that give me the greatest concern are the ones I do understand.� Now read what this great London preacher once said... “I suppose that the most popular of all the proposals at the present moment is to have a new translation of the Bible... The argument is that people are not reading the Bible any longer because they do not understand its language — particularly the archaic terms — what does your modern man know about justification, sanctification, and all these Biblical terms? And so we are told that one thing that is necessary is to have a translation that Tom, Dick and Harry will understand, and I began to feel about six months ago that we had almost reached a stage in which the Authorized Version was being dismissed, to be thrown in the limbo of things forgotten, no longer of any value. Need I apologize for saying a word in favour of the Authorized Version in this gathering? It is a basic proposition laid down by the Protestant Reformers, that we must have a Bible ‘understanded of the people.’ This is common sense; we must never be obscurantists. We must never approach the Bible in a mere antiquarian spirit but it does seem to me that there is a very grave danger incipient in so much of the argument that is being presented today for these new translations. There is a danger, I say, of our surrendering something that is vital and essential. Take this argument that the modern man does not understand such terms as justification, sanctification and so on. I want to ask a question: When did the ordinary man ever understand those terms? Did the colliers to whom John Welsey and George Whitefield preached in the 18th century understand? They had not even been to a day school, they could not read, they could not write. Yet these were the terms that were used. This was the version that was used — the Authorized Version. The common people have never understood these terms. We are concerned here with something that is spiritual; something which does not belong to this world at all; which, as the Apostle Paul reminds us, the princes of this world do not know. Human wisdom is of no value here — it is a spiritual truth. This is a truth about God primarily, and because of that it is a mystery. Yet we are told — it must be put in such simple terms and language that anybody taking it up and reading it is going to understand all about it. My friends, this is sheer nonsense. What we must do is educate the masses of the people up to the Bible, not bring the Bible down to their level. One of the greatest troubles today is that everything is being brought down to the same level; everything is cheapened. The common man is made the standard of authority; he decides everything; and everything has to be brought down to him. Are we to do that with the Word of God? I say No! What has happened in the past has been this. Ignorant, illiterate people, in this country and in foreign countries, coming into salvation have been educated up to the Book and have begun to understand it, to glory in it, and to praise God for it, and I say that we need to do the same at this present time. What we need is, therefore, not to replace the Authorized Version. FREE Men’s Health Event Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is hosting a free men’s health event on Saturday, October 26, from 7:00am-10:30am, in the hospital’s main auditoriums, 214 East 23rd Street. This event in particular offers a convenient way for men to ask medical experts about issues that can impact their health. The ďŹ rst 200 men to attend will receive a free blood test that will screen for lipids, testosterone, glucose and prostate-speciďŹ c antigen levels. Men who have the blood test are asked not to eat or drink anything except water for at least 8 hours before the test. Prescribed medications should be taken as usual. CEREAL is actually certain types of grass grown for their GRAIN, which in BOTANICAL terms is a type of fruit. Farmers must cut, THRESH and WINNOW the grain using either a SCYTHE or a machine. WINNOWING means separating the grain, eaten by humans, from the HAY, which is used as animal FODDER. The unwanted material is also called CHAFF. Another term for CHAFF is BRACT. Do not confuse ICKER with the exclamation ICK, to indicate something that is unpleasant. Community Living Skills Workshop: Self-Care

The Gifts of the World Bazaar

Self-Care is Thursday, October 31, from 2:00pm-4:00pm, at Wyoming Independent Living, 1609 East 19th Street, and the fourth section of the “Community Living Skills Workshop� which is an eleven-week workshop. These workshops are grounded in the Independent Living Philosophy that explains how identifying skills someone currently has and others they want to build on can help them live a more independent life. Halloween Day Harvest Festival The Cheyenne Veterans Affairs Health Care System will hold an all-encompassing Harvest Festival on Halloween, Thursday, October 31, from 2:30pm-5:00pm, at the facility at 2360 East Pershing Boulevard. During the family event, children are encouraged to trick-or-treat from Veteran residents and staff, while adults can apply for VA jobs or learn about programs offered through the department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans may also receive their u vaccination. There will be carnival games, a photo booth, job fair and concession stand where families can buy dinner before their night on the town. Families wishing to attend should park on the east side of the facility near the Circle of Flags and enter through the Community Living Center. Veterans wishing to apply for VA beneďŹ ts or enroll in VA health care should bring a copy of their DD214 and two forms of identiďŹ cation. Veterans, families, community partners, congressional delegations, local leaders, media, and general public are welcome to attend.

Junior Rie Program The Cheyenne Rie & Pistol Club is offering a Junior Rie Program for kids from 10-18 years old interested in learning marksmanship and safety. The program starts Wednesday, November 6, 2019 and runs through April 2020. Shooters will need to provide their own eye and ear protection. Adopt a Senior for the Holidays! The Laramie County Senior Services, 2101 Thomes Avenue, will be having an “Adopt A Senior Challenge� for the holidays. Applications will be accepted from Friday, November 1-Thursday, November 14 for Thanksgiving, and Friday, November 1-Monday, December 16 for Christmas. This would entail inviting them over for the holidays, also picking them up if needed, and returning them home. Some of our seniors have no family and are very much alone for the holidays.
