The design requirement is to make a new history museum of our university based on the situation of the site. Between Yingxue Lake and Xueshan Mountain, the site has a beautiful scenery. The north area of the site is always filled with a large number of students especially during weekdays when they go to classes or go eating. Lacking a place for discussion or leisure near classrooms buildings, students live an inconvenient school life. To make better use of beautiful scenery of the site and to enable students to get benefit from this new architecture, my idea was to use the Chinese traditional gardening technique to make a quiet space for students' cultural life and study. As a multifunctional museum, the building has outdoor theater space, tea rooms, bookstores, discussion area and exhibition area. And the entrances of the building and routes of the exhibition were designed according to the people flow and traffic. In traditional Chinese gardening design, the host of a garden often changed, therefore the scenery of the garden was improved on the basis of its host's interest. Like the montage of the movie, each part of the scenery is linked with each other as time goes on. Also, ancient people in China often created delicate scenery in even the smallest garden. Inspired by those theories of the traditional design of gardening, I created various delicate parts of space according to people's feelings, and designed routes for visitors to feel the change of different inside and outside spaces varying with time. 3
Chinese garden——harmony between man and nature
key elements courtyard
The Chinese garden is a landscape garden style which has evolved over three thousand years. Gardens created by scholars, poets are made for reflection and escape from the outside world. They create an idealized miniature landscape, which is meant to express the harmony that should exist between man and nature. A typical Chinese garden is enclosed by walls and includes ponds, rock works, trees and flowers, and an assortment of halls and pavilions within the garden, connected by winding paths and zig-zag galleries. By moving from structure to structure, visitors can view a series of carefully composed scenes, unrolling like a scroll of landscape paintings.

The site is located at the historical urban area of the Qingdao city. The area once was a highly-developed special economic zone. Its development records the integration of foreign and local culture. Although the area began to wane after the municipal government moved eastwards and rapid development of urbanization, it has an important position in the mind of Qingdao people. The design task for the project is to infuse new vitality to the declining area and provide convenience for locals. According to the history of this area, I created a story to represent it by metaphors-- a loner is chased and always in danger, and finally, he is pushed over a cliff. Once this area had a glorious history and unique inner courtyards, but it could not avoid the damage by urbanization. Based on the story, I designed different structures across the old buildings on the site. Also, lacking places to having a shower or cooking, local people lived a difficult life. Children do not have any places to play or study, so they have to chase and play with each other on the road with many cars. On account of the poor infrastructure of local residential areas, the design brings certain functions to meet their basic requirement to enhance their life quality. 8

The design requirement is to design a theater in order to enrich local people's spiritual and cultural life. Located in the new city center of Jinan, the site is surrounded by newly built office buildings and new living quarters. Lacking sound infrastructure, office workers and locals almost do not have a place to have a meal, go shopping or even take a walk, which means their life is monotonous. To make a positive impact on the surroundings activate the neighborhood, my idea was to improve the infrastructure and function for both office workers and locals and to attract more people into the site and hold various kind of public activities, such as exhibition or showing of films. Also, inside the theater, I designed various kind of space. Some of them lead people's routes, others make them stay and interact with them. The theater has an ellipsoidal form held by three main columns, bringing about space on the ground for people's activities as well as outdoor theater space. The ellipsoidal space of it is the main theater space, while boxes surrounding it are the exhibition, shops, coffee shop and cinemas spaces. I also designed space truss structure to provide long - span space without columns. And a gallery bridge can link the boxes with each other, bringing different kinds of experiences in the architecture.

Located in the historical urban area, Zhongshan Road area was once a colony of foreign countries during the world war and a commercial center of Qingdao. Currently, the texture and facades were relevantly damaged. The design task is to infuse new vitality to this area, to optimize urban space, and to renovate old buildings, containing conservation, restoration and revival. For No.2 Baoding Road, we heightened the building by the addition of a second story. As an open tearoom, the additional part uses light steel structure, linking with the No.2 Baoding Road yard to serve visitors and locals. As for the No.4 and No.6 Baoding Road yard, we redesigned the entrance and routes in order to enhance the relationship of residents and stores. For those irreversibly damaged facades, our idea was remaining the existing opening but changing the windows and doors with materials different from old ones. Also, we changed the old parking lots to a public square for morning or night market to provide more leisure space for locals. The nearby building is opened as a shopping mall with decoration of advertisements for contrast with historical buildings as well as diminishing its huge dimension sense. The newly designed galleries can make the maximum use of the space and provide evacuation space as well.

With various scales, streets in Qingdao have their own characteristics. Zhongshan Road, for example, gives a wide open feeling, while the Dagu Road gives a narrow and quiet feeling. The streets impression are not just made by roads; buildings on both sides of the road are also important components of the street. [5-1] Weird & Normal year6, semester2,2018.10 TutorďźšJimenez Lai, David Jimenez Iniesta, Kevin Pazik AcadsemicďźŒIndividual Project
The weirdness and normality of architecture depend on the degree of power and freedom, and their interconnections are varied under the swift between oppression and political intent. When power dominates the building, there would be two extremes of weirdness and normality based on the control of policy. When politicization intentions are extremely low, the power center tend to establish a series of rules and regulations on each individual to manage buildings. In this case, the shape of the personal buildings become extremely normal and show a homogenous form. To be specific, the shape of buildings is embodied in a uniform appearance, standardized planes and elevations, space for maximum utilization, and so on. However, when the political intent is extremely high, the purpose of the building is transformed into a propaganda function. The shape and the weirdness of the building act as a symbolic tool to express the strength of the power. In this case, the building tends to be spectacular, that is weird. The building appears in the form of a huge sculpture or a landmark in the city. The enormous volume of the building shows power of the strength of the power, and the strangeness of the shape of the building is used as a tool to promote the power of the center. When oppression from power is reduced and thus the building is given enough freedom to design, the building also tends to be both normal and weird based on the degree of policy. When the political intentions are obvious, the lack of power allows the design of building to develop freely. In order to show the individual power and wealth, weird buildings would be established. The great extent of freedom brings about disorder and randomness, and it loses the constraints of regulations and norms. A great number of personal tastes and requirements are applied into the design of the building. The building will have a random and quirky appearance and shape. The order of the interior space will also become chaotic and disordered which is weird. On the other hand, when the degree of political intentions is minimized, the maximum of freedom bring about self-control and for the building. Order arises spontaneously and applies to architecture, and as well as guides the development of it. In this case, the space utilization appearance and the shape of the building tend to be rational and logical. The whole building would be defined as a comfortable place arranged by the real requirement of live. The whole building would become normal. 23

The chair would be act as a multiple-function object in a bedroom. Generally speaking, the center of the bedroom would be literally the “bed“, however, almost in every bedroom, there exists a chair which serves as the most important part of the room. For example, every morning people get up and finish their breakfast, they might need to sit in the chair to think about their life(...). Or maybe they would work or study on their chair. In the night, people put their clothes on the chair, and in the morning, people move their clothes from their chair to their beds. Since people spend too much time in their chairs, people even design chairs which can both keep them healthy (standing chairs) and make them comfortable while working. Or when looking at the illustrators’ chair which can satisfy their need to watch anime or manga through multiple screens and to draw on their tablets or to use their laptop in their chairs, I can strongly feel the importance of chair. Even with the most normal sofa chair, people are not easily to seat still in it. People are willing to change their gestures to make themselves comfortable in their chairs, which even conflicts with the original design of designers. When taking a close look at those chairs, it is easily to find something weird in the most normal chairs, which leads me to think about how to make a new chair to satisfy people’s need in their bedroom in daily life or to re-define the character of the chair. 24
