SOUNDWEAVING After its debut at Syntonyms last year, MOME Laboratory displays another interdisciplinary, integrative and experimental project at the Vienna Design Week with Hungary as this year’s the guest country. 2nd year MA textile student Zsanett Szirmay’s work may be perceived as the feminine match for last year’s successful Syntonyms. While the black sombreness, 270-page data documentation and technicalisation of Syntonyms represented the rational male principle and essence, while the white “laces”, airy playfulness, “rococo” grace and jingling tunes of Soundweaving clearly create a feminine realm. At the core of the Soundweaving project is the traditional cross-stitching pattern used in Hungarian folk embroidery transformed into sound by a punch card comb music player. The cross-stitch pattern of holes on the tape in the musical box were punched by the creator, Zsanett Szirmay. In this case, the punched tape acts as the score. Embroidered shirts and pillows from the Transylvanian Bukovina, and from Kalotaszeg and Hungary served as a basis for the patterns. As part of the transformation, embroidery patterns turned into laser cut textile pieces, and crossstitched patterns into melodies. Soundweaving equally stimulates all senses, and calls for interaction. The project uses multiple media and communicates on diverse planes, combining the borderlands of folk art, design and music. It belongs to the analogue and digital realms at the same time as the handmade embroidery is translated into laser cut patterns. At the same time, the visual world is presented in audio, or rather the graphic aspect of music gets a role in developing the tunes. Bálint Tárkány-Kovács, folk musician and composer was instrumental in the audio mapping and developing the tunes.

METAPLASM 90 x 650cm oil on canvas 2015 Elements of the series: Metaplasm 2. (Russo) , 90x140cm Metaplasm 4. (Kim & Kim) , 90x150cm

Brigitta Péntek’s artwork consists of four particular, but cohesive pieces of paintings (with the size of 90x650 cm). The painting - as a whole - depicts six female fencers, who are waiting for their bouts to start. In this cardinal moment, the fencers get into such a specific state of mind in which they sense the sport-hall only in a peripheral perspective -- instead of the athetes’ (material) surroundings, they focus on the ongoing competition itself. Hence, the inner (subjective) sphere of the fencers becomes visually comprehensible in my artwork, “Metaplasm”.

ARTWORK DESCRIPTION Simply, I would describe myself as a filter type of artist. My works are always related to the visible, I examine our relations to the seen world, and the way we experience it. This sensual attitude makes the observation and the technical execution the essential parts. My degree work series synthesized detailed depiction, flat transparent layers and linear abstraction on simple still life motifs in order to represent the fragmentation, and layeredness of cognition. To start working with something, there must always be a visually interesting aspect, that I also feel somehow connected to my everyday experiences and thoughts. Then there are two

The main theme of Kata Jánosi’s paintings are landscapes - however these are more like inner landscapes, a half-abstract world where everything is incomprehensible, unstable, always changing. One is not sure what is that he’s seeing, what is in front of his eyes. These landscapes reflect to a mood, an unstable situation in life. Jánosi amplifies this feeling with a mixed technique: the acrylic breaks uncontrollably on the surface of the oil paint. She only started this process - but never meant to fully control it. Instead she let the paint do it for itself... and somehow she ended up working together with the material in a silent cooperation.

PETRA BÁHIDSZKI MICRO-MACRO 26 x 42 cm giclée print 2015

The concept of the work of Petra Báhidszki is to show similarities between microcosm and macrocosm of the surface of the Planet. She downloaded satellite images from Google Earth, went to each of those areas, and searched for similar patterns in their micro worlds.

Description: Gergely Barta’s paintings are cut-out pieces of his personal environment. They are motives, which can seem insignificant, only because they’re regular, common elements of our surrounding environment. We got used to seeing them, being around them. In his oeuvre, Barta aims to get hold of the state of stillness, timelessness and silence, he focuses on the phenomenon, which seem to disappear from the lives of the cosmopolitan people.

The typical feature of Hungarian block of flats, the inner court– if we look at the original meaning of it – is a place for social interaction, a field where conversation is made possible. We can’t look at it as space existing in itself, only in case someone is in interaction with it, we can’t separate the person from the location. In better cases, two person. In a minute someone starts talking to someone else, the inner court is getting into action, a perspective starts to form itself, which lasts until the conversation ends. The bars, tiles, the outlines of the tenants form the spectre of the court. In Kósa’s research, he examines this very function of the court, as place for conversation and connecting link between the memories of the tenants and the building itself.

HUNGARIAN ARTWORKS

GERGELY KĂ“SA He looked into the history of one specific building, the resulting artworks represent four floors of people and space, connecting with each other. He reflects on the meeting points of his neighbours and the frieze made up of decorative geometric forms which frames the reflection of the black iron bars. This pattern serves as the visual base of the paintings. The two side, the visual and the historical context lean ont o each other.

FICTION OF THE REALITY 2015, series of collage paintings

VÉGH JÚLIA My works depict the dynamism of remembrance and continuously re-interpret everyday situations. I emphasize the incidence, which composes seemingly distant elements into one given frame of space and time. Representing the reminiscent ego, the images become dreamlike and personal. The dynamic memory selects freely, composing a new, fictional narrative world, like in Surrealism. Beyond free association by photomontage and collage, my recurrent sources of inspiration are motifs and materials. Works that come into being this way reflect Central European situations in a studiously personal and ironic manner. These works start from the images of news coming from my actual surroundings. Then I paint the protagonists of photos I collected onto this layer to rewrite the real news into fictional narrative situations by the collage technique. Dynamic memory, confronting and composing real/unreal,experience/non-experience, has a significant role in creating these works. During this process I reflect on the press also, by creating my own liberty of press in these works. Parallel and reverse time horizons meet in a visual way, within the transparent layers of the photo film just like in the ancient palimpsestus. By fusing these layers, collage works become fictional images, summaries of our social existence.
