ABOUT ETIHAD MODERN ART GALLERY Etihad Modern Art Gallery is an independently run, sponsored art gallery located at the heart of Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates. Our primary goal is to develop the next generation of artists through exciting and different exhibitions, events and exclusive publications from a breadth of talent. The talent at Etihad Modern Art Gallery doesn’t distinguish or discriminate between contemporary, urban, street and pop art, rather embrace and look to display visually engaging exhibitions from a hybrid of artistic disciplines. The gallery’s main goal is to offer affordable original artworks and limited editions, combined with the belief that the works on display must have a strong visual impact and high quality production. This is what unites all of the artists we work with, as many experiment with a variety of different media from a multitude of backgrounds and disciplines. The gallery’s founder, H.E. Khaled Seddiq Al Muttawaa, created a friendly and versatile art environment that is open to everyone. Over the past three years Khaled has always championed new and interesting visual artists, irrespective of background or discipline. He has seen a huge number of what were once seen as new and emerging artists grow into the household names that are now collected all over the world. The championing of new artists and their work has never been more prominent than in the last 3 years. Etihad has organised significant art shows and local heritage exhibitions and created bonds with the International art scene and academic institutions worldwide. The gallery has invited international artists to live, teach and create art in the UAE. The aim is to motivate local artists to showcase their work and host a wide range of parallel cultural activities like art workshops, poetry nights and music events. Etihad Modern Art Gallery is a strong art organisation deeply rooted in the local community, aiming to play a positive role in the brightly emerging art scene of Abu Dhabi and integrating different cultures with the local community.

H.E. KHALED SEDDIQ AL MUTTAWA Chairman And Founder Etihad Modern Art Gallery
We are the generation that witnessed the creation of the union, and we’re proud to have seen the dynamic development and prosperity of the United Arab Emirates since its inception until now. “We have exciting initiatives and plans coming up for the local art community as we are always searching for something unique so the public can expect surprises. Etihad Modern Art Gallery hopes that the arts will continue to play a major role in developing the community, supporting cultural heritage and pass to future generations of the United Arab Emirates. This is very important, first for my country, then for my kids and people in general. It’s very important to know who we are and there’s so many things, hidden information, for us to see. “The works we display show appreciation to the land by those who come and experience the country and its bounty.”
is a Japanese fine art oil artist, who’s been often described as a “Poet of Colours”. When he was 24, he left his hometown in Osaka to enroll Paris National Art School in France. He was recorded as the youngest Japanese artist to become an official member of Salon d’Automne in 1976, when he was 31. He then traveled to numbers of cities in Europe including Mediterranean Sea, Venezuela, Firenze, Istanbul, Cadaques, and Aegean Sea. When he paints his vision into a canvas with his unique technique and vivid colours, that’s when he casts his “magic”. Koji Yoshioka is a Japanese fine artist who knows how to capture the colours, beauty, and our hearts.

A cel, short for celluloid, is a transparent sheet on which objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation. Actual celluloid (consisting of cellulose nitrate and camphor) was used during the first half of the 20th century, but since it was flammable and dimensionally unstable it was largely replaced by cellulose acetate. With the advent of computer-assisted animation production, the use of cels has been all but abandoned in major productions. Disney studios stopped using cels in 1990 when Computer Animation Production System (CAPS) replaced this element in their animation process, and in the next decade and a half, the other major animation studios phased cels out as well.
Technique
Painting with acrylic paint on the reverse side of an already inked cel. Generally, the characters are drawn on cels and laid over a static background drawing. This reduces the number of times an image has to be redrawn and enables studios to split up the production process to different specialised teams. Using this assembly line way to animate has made it possible to produce films much more cost-effectively. The invention of the technique is generally attributed to Earl Hurd, who patented the process in 1914. The outline of the images are drawn on the front of the cel while colors are painted on the back to eliminate brushstrokes. Traditionally, the outlines were hand-inked but since the 1960s they are almost exclusively xerographed on. Another important breakthrough in cel animation was the development of the Animation Photo Transfer Process, first seen in The Black Cauldron, released in 1985.
Collector's item
Production cels were sometimes sold after the animation process was completed. More popular shows and movies demanded higher prices for the cels, with some selling for thousands of dollars. Direct from Tokyo, ArtSpace & Tokyo Toy Films are graciously displaying the Original Animation cels which were actually used to create the famous Japanese TV anime series. As anime became an all digital format in the late 1990s, any remaining cells still in existence are of a very limited amount. Therefore, original animation cels have become increasingly sought after and also increasing in value year on year. In this exhibition, visitors will see the very popular Anime of “Astro Boy”, “Jungle Emperor Leo” (by Manga Legend Osamu Tezuka), “The Rose of Versailles” “Doraemon” “Grendizer” “Captain Majid” and many more.
