jeffrey scherer, faia study/work: 1971: b.arch, university of arkansas, with honors 1971: intern architect with shadrach woods, berlin, germany (until 1973) 1973: master program, architectural association, teaching aid to charles jencks (left in 1974) 1973: intern architect with nicholas grimshaw, london, england (until 1977) 1977: adjunct faculty, university of minnesota, college of architecture (until 1998) 1977: architect, hodne / stageberg partners (until 1981) 1981: founded meyer, scherer & rockcastle, ltd. why: the process of creating architecture is, to me, the result of autonomous and unconscious thinking; an awareness of what is known and not known; a desire to reveal the embedded connections to the earth, middle ground and the sky; and the embodiment of sustainable beauty. spending time with the master class will help me in my continuous journey to be a better architect. thank you for considering me for this honor.

sharing, discussing and interactive play I believe in the value of discussion and interaction with the client and communtiy. in most of our public work, we value community input and spend considerable time mining the best ideas about place and function before we begin design work. this enables us to establish a common vocabulary and dig deeper into the real roots of the project. respect for the nonarchitects point of view is central to architects become better architects.

las vegas, nv usa sahara west public library this library and art museum (designed with my garth rockcastle) is designed as an introverted oasis in a desert setting that is surrounded by truly awful developer architecture. through daylight harvesting, water management, interior “caves for reading and cascading forms that frame distance views, patrons can escape the desolatedness of las vegas and enter and interior world of reading, thinking and contemplating.
