2* the views

In my memory,Dale and the villa is covered with snow. My feet were always cold,no matter inside the villa or outside. Everything was still. And empty. So many rooms and doors, I was confused. But look outside the windows, the fantastic views towards the norwegian landscape. The fjord, the village. Strange how they are framed in the rooms. The space felt different day to day. Cloudy, sunny, snowing, not snowing. It turned out the villa was actually alive. The views made it alive. So I wanted to touch the views. I walked closer. Yet the closer I was, the farer it seemed. It could double. Transform, or overlap. And that's where I started with, the intangible views.

movement and the view

The building is a box with frames. The frame of views change with the location of the viewpoint. As the observer gets closer to the window, the frame gets bigger and less perceivable, allowing one's eyes to move more freely into different directions.

Overlapping of pictures on the left. Bright and dark. A type of blur. Simultanity. the speed of time can be manipulated by natural light or artificial lights.

Facade With Windows

facades indicate the function of the spaces they enclose. smaller windows represent mroe privacy.

the wooden pillars become the key lines dividing the horizontal stripe opennings, giving its unique rhythem.

3* dynamic filters

The attitude of this project is to transform the villa with a focus on views and frames, which is one of the most evident characteristics of the building. Local context is highly valued. There is a constant desire to open up the spaces for the future use by the art center. Based on the analysis of the building, the order of the flat spaces is rearranged. Walls are taken away but replaced by new structure. Within a frame around the central part,a new layer of flexible wall system is added. The facade becomes a double skin. This system is characterized by translucent material and sliding doors. They control the light as well as sights, making various frames for mysteries to be discovered. Dealing with the old and the new, it is about both deducting and adding something to the villa, keeping it in an on-going balance.

To see or not to see

the desire to open up the space by using and adding frames, multiple direction of sights in a single space. the desire to praise the horizontal quality by letting the scenery pass through the upper floor.

Views Behind Doors The frequent experience of going through doors after doors gives a special experience of both mystery and discovery. There is a tension between being trapped and being surprised.

plan of doors and windows

Opennings And Movement In this building, movement from one space to another is dynamically characterized by the activity of opening new doors. There is no single route since there are too many doors, boardering both the inside-outside and interior spaces themselves. The seemingly confusing doors have a potential of creating randomness.

Replace/ Combine/ Improve -- sliding doors in the building into a sliding wall system, with more public dimension of space and walls, more transparent/translucent materials, controling eyesights.

dynamic movements doors - movements - views * potential use by embedding things into the rooms and controling what can be shown on the 'screens', various possibilities of use can be explored. views behind the opening: - nature - objects old, new, furniture, art works, - activities - ...

* spacial experience - a game of choosing which door to enter, an adventure of discovery and surprises. sometimes one does not enter every room. sometimes he needs to return. sometimes there is a view, and sometimes there is not. one can never expect what to see before pushing the wall/door. - the doors are similar in material but different in dimension. there are 3 types of size according to the modular grids. - sliding walls filter the lights and views both from outside and from inside, both natural and artificial. one can feel the continuity of the spaces, but his eyesight is gently blocked by layers of translucent walls.

- the shadows of the windows, objects or people are cast on the rice-paper-like walls, providing hints which seduce one's movement.

elements the villa is overwelmed with art works, books as well as some furniture of the art foundation. these objects become part of the building's identidy and spacial quality. crowded objects could be placed in the new rooms, together with new objects such as works by the residential artists of NKD.

existing objects new objects bookshelves seats

focus on the ground floor main focus of renovating the building is drawn to the ground floor, spaces that receive most access while lacking a sense of publicity. basic measures:

1. keep the main structure and form as it is. the overall constitution and form of the villa is of good esthetic quality, with a fine combination with the environment.

2. keep the structure of the facade, namely the wooden pillars at the facades which partialy support the roof. replace the windows with full-height windows with higher U value.

ground floor plan: inner walls removed 3. reconstruct the roof with better insulation. 4.remove inner walls as shown on the plan.

5. find a grid system based on the existing dimensions in order to introduce the sliding walls in certain modulars.

6. divide new rooms with translucent sliding walls, add necessary steel pillars at key joints 7. connect the south part at the load-bearing wall, make opennings

grid & modular

- a series of grid is necessary for arranging the spaces enclosed by sliding doors, similar to the logic of traditional Japanese houses. - here the axis are set largely according to the facade to ensure the spaces fit the views.

Livingroom facing north, darker space and more diffused natural light than the southern spaces. Filters could be made dark to fit the space.

In the model, the translucent walls are realized by ricepaper, which can be easily painted with ink, creating a natural effect which react to humidity of the air in the space.

spaces - big, small, long, square... - remove the corridor so that there is no particular transportation space - sequence - south, west, north, bright, dark, direct light, diffused light - traces of the original spaces

room 7 in the south, shadow on the filtering walls

filters along the south facade has many potential functions: a. control the direct light to fit different use of the space b. blinding/not blinding the views c. playing with shadows on the surface d. surface for temporary art works e....
