Facts you should know :
Great goat islands Great Goat is a cay located less than a mile off the coast of Jamaica, southwest of the Hellshire Hills. It is part of Saint Catherine Parish. Along with Little Goat Island located northwest of it, these two cays make up the Goat Islands, which are within the Portland Bight Protected Area. These cays were previously home to the Jamaican Iguana until the 1940s, when the population was thought to have become extinct, mainly due to predation by introduced small Indian mongooses and habitat alteration by feral goats. The islands are rumoured to be the site of Scottish pirate Captain William Kidd's looted treasure. Also, a cave with Arawak remains is said to be there, and at one time, they were inhabited by slaves and their owners and much later, by US naval officers. Once owned by Sir Thomas Lynch, Governor of Jamaica from 1682-1684. The islands are cited as Coverly Great Goat Island and Peters Little Goat Island on a 1763 Craskell and Simpson map. By 1804 they are cited on Robertson's Map of the county of Middlesex as Great Goat Island and Little Goat Island. These unique set of islands was valued for its wood. According to the Morning Journal, April 16, 1838: "All that valuable and extensive run of land, called Great Goat Island, containing about 1,500 acres, all in heavy wood, upwards of 30 years growth. The above run of land not only abounds in the best hardwood timbers, but also a great quantity of limestone of superior quality; and as a fishing station, Spanish Town and its vicinity is chiefly and abundantly supplied there from." In 1941, Goat Island was declared a Protected Area. Under the Protected Area Order, "no person being either an enemy alien or a person who was not resident in the said area on the day of the making of this Order shall land upon the said island or shall enter within the said area except with the consent of the Inspector of Police in charge of the parish of St Catherine." 9 Yaadi Culture, Fimi Style

What causes lupus? Although doctors are do not know exactly what causes lupus and other autoimmune diseases, most believe that lupus results from both genetic and environmental stimuli. Since lupus is known to occur within families, doctors believe that it is possible to inherit a genetic predisposition to lupus. There are no known genes, however, that directly cause the illness. The higher number of lupus cases in females than in males may indicate that the disease can be triggered by certain hormones.

Most of our customs and beliefs are of African origin as Africans keep a large portion of their culture alive through a rich oral legacy. However have been handed down from generation to generation and have managed to creep , there is evidence of some European influence; for example, the beliefs concerning the days of the week were derived from the Europeans.

asserts that ‘sport has become one of the fastest growing global industries in the last thirty years and the magnitude of the sport industry can be measured by the costs to host sport events, the revenue generated by sport events and the earning power of top athletes’. Take a look at some of the international figures: At the international level: It is estimated that the global sport industry is valued at over US$400b. In some developed countries sport contributes about 2% of the gross domestic economy. In 2006 FIFA World Cup earned US$2.4b from marketing and US$892m from sponsorship. The revenues generated by the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals were in the region of US$5b from marketing and US$2b from sponsorship.

A Word to the Wise with ..... Deidre Douglas 36
An exclusive INTERVIEW with Donald This month our focus is on “National Development” and we would like to introduce someone who is making strides in music while fostering national development; Mr. Donald “Ïcon” Medder, founder of Icon Music Group.
A
Q
Tell us about your education background?
I started off at Galilee Basic School, then went on to Excelsior Primary, passed Common Entrance then started Ardenne High School. After leaving Ardenne High I went to ''Real World Academy'', meaning I decided to work for a year then I moved on to the University of the West Indies, where I pursued a double major bachelor degree in Management Studies and Economics.
Q A
What previous work experience do you have before starting your venture? I worked at the National Commercial Bank, Windward Road Branch for 8 months, left and went to University. During my studies at UWI I was awarded a summer internship for being one of the top students in my faculty and that brought me to the Bank of Nova Scotia's Head Office for two summers. I worked in the finance department. After graduating uUniversity I did a short stint at Jamaica Money Market Brokers.
Q
A
Did you do entrepreneurial things as a youth?
Yes. I was selling confectionary while at school for a while, then I sold it at home. The home based business model was quite successful. I then had a home based game shop during the summers to earn some ''going out'' cash. My grandmother had a cook shop and my father owned bars, restaurants and other ventures while I was growing up so I think that whole entrepreneurial spirit had 36 a huge influence on me growing up.
37
“Icon Medder Q A
When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
From I was young I always knew deep within that I was born to do more than just ''the average'' I always wanted to march to the beat of my own drum. I knew for sure after working in all those companies and realizing that a day job, nine to five experience is just not my style. I honor those who do it but I just had to take a path less travelled. Tell us about that game change; what did you actually study in university? Well I studied Management Studies and Economics, I figured that if I am going to be in the music business I might as well learn how to do that part and I also studied Economics because it teaches you about the flow of money and how the system operates.
Q A
What was your primary motivation for starting a business? What were the factors that led you to start the venture? I have always wanted to be successful and rich. I wanted to make a difference and do something meaningful with my existence here on this plain. If I can inspire one other person to be all they can be then it will all be worth it but I hope it will be a whole generation.

An exclusive INTERVIEW with Donald Q A
What were your goals at the time you started the venture?
Q A
I wanted to achieve the following: be a super successful music producer, become a music mogul and create a global media conglomerate that will add enormous value to the Caribbean. Was music a total 180 degrees of change for you or had you prior exposure or experience? My father owned a sound system growing up and I grew up beside Arrows Studio
for most of my ''impressionable'' life so I guess the answer to that question would be No. Music was the only task I took on that did not bore me after a while. I got lost in the process and would be in my own world and that's when I knew I found my dharma. It's all about following your heart. I must admit that I shocked and disappointed many people though with my decision to do music at this level but I like being unpredictable
Did you establish a lifestyle business, a rapid growth business, or what?, Did your growth orientation change over time? I would call it a lifestyle business because I see myself as the business. My business is an extension of

my beliefs, characteristics and personas. As time goes by this strategy may shift but the essence will always be somewhere under the surface. 38
39
“Icon Medder
What sort of resources (not just financial) did you
Q
have when you started the venture? What sort of network did you have? Were there any special creative things you did to come up with the needed resources?
A
I am a strong believer in God and to be honest when I started I prayed a lot and somehow I always meet the key people that would push me to another level. While working at NCB I saved some money and bought my first computer and keyboard, then I practiced night and day composing music. While at UWI I met essential people like Taffi and Bonnie who were very resourceful in helping me move forward. After I left I took some time off to pursue my music and ended up meeting Equinox, Askel, Mr. Clarke and host of other fantastic people. I used to sit and write out my master plan every day. Charting my course in my mind and putting it to paper. Today I see many of these goals materializing and I have flashbacks of those days back in my living room.
39

Q A
How concerned were you with control when starting the venture? Explore the entrepreneur’s need for control (of the venture, of people, of decision making) Throughout my life I have come to realize that when I am in ''Visionary Control'' my
goals are met. I prepared many of my decisions before I eventually act and this may seem odd or haphazard to the outside world looking on but it make perfect sense once you learn to trust your inner voice, intuition and gut
Q A
Did you feel prepared to start the venture at the time you started it? I never had a start date in mind. It just happened at the opportune time and I went with the flow of destiny. And quite frankly I am a risk taker at heart and love a challenge. I believe that if it presents itself then I am capable of accomplishing it ( with the help of God of course).
feeling. Once I step outside of that space things start to go haywire. I do not desire total control as long as the team is headed in the same direction. I am a firm believer in constructive team work.
Q A
How have your goals and values changed since starting the venture?
My values..... no. I have always had a strong value system and being an entrepreneur has only solidified many of my value calls. In terms of goals, I must say that those change and mature as the times and environment around me changes and evolves. I am still aiming for the similar things but on a larger scale and maybe the route or technique has to change to achieve them. You have to be very flexible in this technological age.

It
is no secret that sports plays a pivotal role in the growth and development of
any nation. As society continues to rapidly evolve, nations including, Jamaica have invested large quantities of money and energy into embedding sports as pillar of national development. Over the years, Jamaica has developed an enviable record across the globe through sports. The island has excelled in several sporting disciplines mainly track and field, cricket, netball, football and boxing to name a few. The results of these successes have impacted the development of the nation in several ways such as increased investment and trade opportunities with other countries, boost tourism

various sporting disciplines. In track and field for example, Jamaica has been dubbed the undisputed sprint capital of the world by many pundits. The nation has produced many global superstars in this sport including the legendary Usain Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Asafa Powell and Shelly-Ann Price to name a few. In netball, Jamaica with its population of approximately 2.8 million people is the number four ranked nation in the world. While in football, Jamaica created history by becoming

As explicitly outlined by the SDF (2013), it is of utmost importance that sporting facilities are developed in Jamaica to increase participation in sporting activities and enhance the development of sports and in extension, nation building. The Mona Hockey Field astro turf for example, is the only one of its kind and one of the few in the Caribbean.
