We learn at early stages of our lives how to ask for, even demand items and affections. Yet as we age, we are socialized differently and our techniques waver. So when we get to that place in our lives where we think we know what we want but we are not with persons whose focus are up our alley, we may call it quits, or stay and be miserable or settle for what he or she is offering and thus wiping our slate clean or putting our needs on the back

towards every goal regardless of its size or importance. Compromises will have to be made at times. With every journey in life we may encounter obstacles, but smart, well thought of plans, come with contingency mechanisms. That plan B, C, D and even Z that has to be pulled out of the hat when the “just in case” becomes the reality. 7

From a Bird’s view Cont’d

Treat relationships you consider serious, seriously. Hash out the crumbled parts and straighten the frayed edges. This isn’t about being anal and controlling, more like being responsible and reasonable. We plan our school terms, get class timetables, buy necessary tools and even schedule in other activities, from extracurricular to doctors’ visits. What is the difference between that successful semester and a failed half a decade romantic adventure? Not placing enough importance on the things that matter most. Sure there are those who weren’t planning on staying anyhow. This is not for them. This is for those who invest in something they hoped to work but unlike the rest of your life it failed. No I’m not a guru; I am only blessed to have always had some seriously strong couples around to observe. They understand each other, because they know each other. These are the type of people who can start, middle

and actions. They don’t get deterred by petty incidents, because they are mature enough to know that every unit has its off days. And they take the time to relate, because all smart couples know, no relationship exists without relating. You can be alone in a crowd if there is no one around to communicate with. In this trip what I truly learnt was to be sober before stepping out of single and on to the other side. People need to be happy, or at least comfortable, with their own selves before being with someone. You may only end up passing on your turmoil to another person if you don’t sort through your personal issues before forming this bond. Intimacy is less about being giddy and more about being sure. So my final words to you are from Richard Bach, “The opposite of loneliness is not togetherness, its intimacy”.

Jamaican superstitions are diverse and can be used in virtually every sphere of our daily lives. It is the tradition passed down through our culture which can be traced to our African ancestry. These beliefs and practices have been playing pivotal roles in our lives and they continue to guide and foster our interactions and attitudes/actions even today.

Ole Time People did say…. Georgette McGlashen Case in point; I can remember as a child about 6 years of age, one day I was eavesdropping on an adult conversation. Two women were talking about a situation that was heavily encoded or that could not be decoded by me. Nevertheless I tried my hardest to follow the story that was filled with intermittent whispers and hems and haws; which by the way made me more curious. This must be a deep secret, and I was determined to find it out. So I crouched a little closer. That’s when one of the ladies saw and said to

talking that Bush have AIDS and even his walls have eyes. So Maybe even his walls are sick and dying too; because if they have eyes, there must be a lot of holes in them – they both must be really dying. Upon offering this explanation my brother burst into laughter. What was so funny I did not understand, someone and their wall is dying and my brother is laughing. “That is not what they mean” he said. He went to explain that Bush was not his friend Bush, but that the ladies were alerting each other of my presence.
