Smilow Cancer Hospital STEM CELL TRANSPLANT PROGRAM
The Stem Cell Transplant Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital is a FACT accredited program that was started in 1994 and currently performs around 200 transplants yearly. We perform stem cell and bone marrow transplants for a variety of malignant and benign diseases in both pediatric and adult populations.
The adult stem cell transplant team is led by Stuart Seropian, MD, Professor of Medicine (Hematology), and our pediatric team is led by Lakshmanan Krishnamurti, MD, Professor of Pediatrics (Hematology/Oncology). Both teams include a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team that is involved in the care of patients receiving a stem cell transplant.
Together with their colleagues, they are leading clinical trials to advance the field and discover additional treatment options for more types of cancer. This allows patients at Smilow Cancer Hospital some of the earliest access to novel therapies.
WHAT DO WE DO?
There are two types of stem cell transplantation that we perform:
• Autologous transplant: involves using a patient’s own stem cells, which are collected from their blood and frozen.
• Allogeneic transplant: involves receiving stem cells from another person, called a donor. A search will be conducted to find a compatible donor. This is done through a test called HLA testing. We test your family members to see if anyone is a match, and we also run a search through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Be The Match Registry to find an unrelated donor.
