FOREWORD

MFA THESIS | TIDY UP PROCESS BOOK | YANFAT YEUNG

Tidyup is my thesis project. I became interested in the topic of home decluttering and home organizing because I am an interior designer from Hong Kong, a city with one of the highest population densities in the world. Tiny apartments are everywhere. We used to have floor boards double as closets, kitchens morph into the living rooms, every square inch is about function and effectiveness. After I moved to the United States, I still looked for ways to declutter and organize that are simple and fun, ways that also create a more effective and happier home. I began wondering if others were looking for the same. As our housing prices soar in the Bay Area and a growing number of people are moving into smaller houses as a way to save money, I decided I am certainly not the only one. Everyone wants to live in a happy and organized home with effectiveness too, but it takes time to declutter and it is not fun to do. And I always wonder, what can we do about it?

WHAT’S THE MAIN PROBLEM?

01 02 03 04 | CURRENT PROBLEM

Home clutter keeps coming back, the home is always a mess. CURRENT PROBLEM

MFA THESIS | TIDY UP

Household clutter is nothing new. A recent survey conducted by Uncle Bob’s Self Storage on trends in home and self-storage indicates that more than 40% of Americans feel they have too much stuff in their home. Furniture, clothing, and collectibles top the list of items that are cluttering up people’s homes and driving them to seek more storage and more effective organization solutions. Collectibles, files, and work equipment were also mentioned as contributing to the clutter in our homes.

WHAT ARE WE REALLY KEEPING?

80% of what we keep at home we actually never use. — National Association of Professional Organizers

RESEARCH According to National Association of Professional Organizers, research shows that 80% of what we keep we never use, and the more we keep, the less things we use. Ironically, many people are unable to accomplish their work or enjoy their lives because of the clutter, while much of the world does not have the basic necessities of life, which in many instances, could be solved by the clutter of other people’s lives.

WHAT MAKES UP THE BULK OF ITEMS IN OUR HOME’S STORAGE? 009

WHY DOES IT MATTERS?

The average American wastes about 55 minutes a day looking for things they own but can’t find. — Newsweek

010

COST OF HOLDING ON

A desire for security and future use can lead people to hold on to useless possessions. People never feel in need of help or a solution until they find out they are running out of space or have to downsize homes. When they are facing home clutter, they usually don’t want to part with anything. People usually don’t realize that they don’t need so many possessions, yet the way they organize their home isn’t working. Moving or running out of space plays a major role in making people’s lives and space feel cluttered, especially when they need to downsize. When our lives and circumstances change such as retirements, job changes, military deployments, and other life events, we often are left scrambling to fit into a smaller home, whether it is temporary or permanent.

THE TIDYUP STRATEGY & GOAL

Tidyup focuses on providing efficient solutions that make organizing fun and simple. I found an opportunity based on my research about decluttering and home organizing. Clutter makes people feel stressed and costs them both spiritually and financially. Tidyup’s design solution is based on three aspects of reform that focus on the current dilemma and what people need: decluttering method advancement, increasing the awareness of home organizing importance, and technology integration. The overall goal with Tidyup is to develop and provide efficient methods for helping people organize better while creating a different and better experience for people. Another goal of Tidyup is to change people’s lives by providing them a new and innovative solution that they have never tried or experienced before.

OVERVIEW

MFA THESIS | TIDY UP

It is very important to find out what we actually need. When house values and rents rise dramatically, it limits the chance of people finding and moving into a home that perfectly suits their belongings and provides them with more storage. Too big is a waste, and too small is a headache. So how can we maximize home space and minimize home clutter? Before design anything and provide helpful strategies for decluttering and home organizing, I conduct a research collection using three different methods of research. I distilled the final result and information into the focus of people’s concern and further solutions development.

CONVERSATION & INTERVIEW

The discussion on how to maximize home space & home organizing. ABOUT THE EVENT The event lasted about two hours and there were eight people present in the conversation. Participants were my friends, classmates, teachers, and designers who work and live in San Francisco. It includes a wide range of people with different occupations, interests, and ages. The event took place at my teacher’s studio since it had an open and quiet environment that perfectly suited this event. I provided foods and drinks for people before and during our meet so we could have a more enjoyable and relaxed conversation. I started with asking them to answer some interview questions, and then we started discussing to see if we could find out what the problem is that we are actually facing.

MORE INTERVIEW & THE SURVEY

What people really think about home organize and home clutter? ABOUT QUESTIONS The survey was one way for reaching out to Tidyup’s audience. After I interviewed people from the street and sent out a survey online, I had responses from about sixty people. Their age ranged from twenty to forty and they came from all over the United States. Some were Americans, some were international students and some were immigrants. Each participant was asked to answer a series of questions based on areas of concerns and problems, including living situation, home clutter, organization habits, and organizing dilemmas.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

MFA THESIS | TIDY UP PROCESS BOOK

Creative work starts with insights. It is the best way to learn more about a subject. For me, I wanted to know about home organizing and decluttering. The research that I have done provides me with a guide to developing Tidyup’s insights, as well as how to apply the learning and understanding gained to tackle home organization problems. During I researching and studying home organizing and decluttering, I gained an understanding of how and why it happens simply by researching and not passing judgment. The more I learned, and the greater my depth of observation, the more information I picked up. Knowledge is the understanding that I gained and I can use it for Tidyup. This step is all about developing insight, so it becomes more than a basic idea about home organizing and decluttering, and more of a way to improve the old methods, discover ineffective solutions, and learn things on a much deeper level of understanding.

INSIGHT 1 People who feel stressed with home clutter don’t know where to start and what to do. I want to find out how home clutter interferes with people’s life and how they feel. The most interesting fact that I have found is that most people know that home clutter and messy homes lead to stress, but they don’t know where to start and what to do about it. It usually ends up with the clutter accumulating and making the problem worse. I think it has to do with the fact that many people couldn’t make a decision when they have to decide what items to keep and what items to throw away.

INSIGHT 3

| TIDY UP PROCESS BOOK

Getting rid of unwanted clutter can save us time spent caring for unnecessary possessions. The never ending need to care for things we own drains our time and energy. Whether we are maintaining our houses, fixing our cars, replacing goods, or cleaning things made of plastic, metal, or glass, our life is being emotionally and physically drained by the care of things that we don’t actually need. And in most cases, we don’t enjoy to do it either. We are far better off owning less.

MFA THESIS

Getting rid of unnecessary items will help to eliminate cleaning and organizing time.

RESE ARCH PROCESS

Home clutter, both mental and physical, can affect our productivity and eat away at our time. Think of all the minutes we waste for looking for items that we misplace. Our messy home and crowded storage brings us many headaches and the pressure and stress of a cluttered life causes worries to and can make us miss deadlines, work longer hours, and lose important stuff. Clutter becomes a problem in our life since it can eat up out all our energy and time.

| YANFAT YEUNG

039

INSIGHT 5 Organize our belongings will only provide us with temporary change and relieve.

INSIGHT 4 The sorting process forces us to learn and ask what is really important when we are deciding what to keep and what to discard. It is always a good thing to take a step back and realize that excessive consumption is not delivering on its promise to provide happiness and fulfillment. Desire and consumption are necessary sometimes, but excessive consumption is not. Life can be better and more enjoyed by intentionally rejecting these things. And the fact is that a meaningful life is found in the invisible things of life such as love, hope, and faith. We all know there are things in our lives that are far more important than what we own, but we are just too busy seeking happiness in the wrong places.

040

Organizing is simply about rearranging. We may find storage solutions today, but we are quickly forced to find new ones as soon as the clutter builds back up. We believe the best solution is to find ways to organize in order to manage the excessive possessions we have. So we seek out bigger containers or more efficient tips and tricks. But simply organizing our belongings without removing things will only lead to actions that must be repeated over and over and over again.

OUR CUSTOMERS

Tidyup is targeting people who couldn’t afford a big home and people who are sharing their home with others. PRIMARY TARGET The primary target audience for Tidyup is Americans who range from their twenty to thirty. This group of people is just out of college and they have no idea how to declutter their home and life, are interested in organizing, live with efficiency and pleasure, and they also make an average salary.

SECONDARY TARGET The secondary target of Tidyup is Americans who are interested in a better way to declutter and organize their home. These group of people are either feeling frustrated with clutter or don’t know how to eliminate it and stop it from coming back.

THE TIDY UP WAY

MFA THESIS | TIDY UP

From the brand name to logo, and from color to tagline, many refinements and changes were made for a better identity that suited the Tidyup brand. The objective of visual development is to bring the vision of innovative home organizing and also the sense of tidiness to the brand Tidyup. Innovative, simple, and fun are the key concepts of our brand. We really want to take the brand far beyond home organizing and decluttering, and we it to be a brand that also focuses on innovative solutions and looks for all possibilities in different perspectives based on what people really need.

TIDYUP LOGO DEVELOPMENT

THE PROCESS The development of our logo went through many stages with many revisions. The first official logo was created in three weeks with many sketches and refinements. The first Tidyup logo that I used in the beginning through the middle of the process was a logo that had Tidyup inside a container icon. However, in the last semester of the thesis while all deliverables were almost in their final stage, I felt that the first logo didn’t convey the message of home organizing, the excitement of Tidyup’s action, the energy of Tidyup, and life improvement. At first, I was caught up with the tidy look and feel of the container logo, but it didn’t connect with my brand. This was the time I became inspired by the arrow idea from my previous sketches. Finally, I made it happen and made the logo.

COLOR PALETTE

ABOUT TIDYUP COLORS Each color of Tidyup provides a playful tidying spirit and vibrancy of the brand. The TidyUp green should be used predominantly with the support of the TidyUp yellow and secondary colors to provide highlights and contrasts when needed. There are exceptions to add tint and transparency to primary and secondary palettes only when handling graphics and complex illustrations that may require a broader palette, contrast, and interplay.

COSMETIC COUNTER MANAGER

MFA THESIS | TIDY UP PROCESS BOOK

Michelle is 31 years old and living in Ingleside area in San Francisco by herself. She is working as a beauty consultant and manager at Clinique. She spends about 70 hours at home a week. The reason she picked her current home is because of the easy commute to work and the convenient neighbor. She plans to move and look for a better location because she always struggles with clutter due to her home’s size. All available places are either too expensive or too far away from work. She has a busy schedule so she doesn’t have enough time to declutter and organize her stuff and her space. She does all housework and organizing by herself and she is interested in time saving tips and techniques that are easy to learn and follow.

THE GOOD

What Works VALIDATION & SUCCESS FIRST USE TUTORIAL

TIMER

Nice tutorial that show what it can do.

Timer is a good idea for working efficiently.

CALL TO ACTION DASHBOARD

To-do list give clear ideas of what to do next and keep me working.

ACTION TO REALIZATION

Nice categories system make organize easier.

It provides chances to retouch our old stuffs that have been forgotten and hidden.

MUSIC FUNCTION Music function is one of the must have functions for organizing and cleaning.

PAUSE BUTTON Nice to have a pause button in tidy up mode.

FUNCTIONAL DASHBOARD Nice to have something that show clutter status of rooms and upcoming tasks.

084

TO-DO LIST

Nice call to action home screen that show me what to do once I open it.

CATEGORIES SYSTEM

ROOM/AREA PAGE Nice to have a room page that manage things efficient and simplify TidyUp process.

CUSTOMIZATION Customizable functions make TidyUp more suitable to my personal preference.

PROCE S S

THE BAD

| 00 01 02 03 04 | IDENTIT Y & DE V ELOPMENT

What Doesn’t Work VALIDATION & FAILURE BORING CONTENT Too many text and need more interesting graphic or icons.

MFA THESIS

TEXT SIZE Body text is too small and title need bigger size.

|

CONFUSING SYNC OPTIONS The sync options in calendar setting is unclear. Do you mean import from other devices?

WORDING

UNATTRACTIVE INTERFACE

ILLUSTRATION WITHOUT ANIMATION Flat and still graphic makes the app boring.

LIMITED CHOICES

UNNECESSARY INFORMATION

HIERARCHY Text is hard to follow, its colors need more contrast and variation to create better hierarchy.

YANFAT YEUNG

NOT EASY TO USE The app is complicate to use with too many details, too many steps and selections.

|

Graphics in TidyUp mode and tutorial are not attractive.

PROCESS BOOK

Declutter sound annoying everytime I read.

In login setup, it needs more social media choices.

TIDY UP

CONFUSING STATUS BOX What the room status box really shows and does? Make it easy to get and understand.

Room page feels so crowded and lot of information is not necessary needed in there.

TOO MANY TABS Details and categories into two tabs which make it confusing and slow the flow.
