In Monet’s later career, he was also financial stable enough to buy a house with a huge garden in Giverny.

Apart from organic paintings, Manet also produced urban landscape. At the time, the train was a new invention and it was a poplular subject for artist to paint.

The garden had became the mainsourse of object in Monet painting for the last thirty years untill his death.

Several gardeners were employed to maintain the garden. Precise instruction was give to them by Monet to design the landscape he wanted

This painting(right), Woman in the Garden(1866), painted in Monet’s mid twenties when he was still young as an artist. The style is not yet like impressionism. The signature broken brush marks are not yet fully developed. In this painting, Monet was experimenting with light and shadow. Also, how to fit people into landscape and to show the light is moving in the painting.

Rouen Cathedral Series(1982-1984)

In Monet’s early career(1865-70), Monet produced large amount of people in landscapes which were only painted as a subject during this period. As we know, Monet was even more into nature in his later career.

During Monet’s later career(after 1890), he was able to travel as he was financially stable. He travelled in France and abroad to cities, such as London and Vienna. He rent or set up studios near locations/buildings that he was interested and produced series of paintings of the same object/ view at different time and season.

His style was to catch the movement of light, so he painted outdoors.

Monet chose to paint nature landscapes and modern life scenes, However, subject was not as important to him as technique. He found the shape and colour which build up the subject were more important.
