Design For Industry Portfolio

About me Hi. My name is Yan and I am currently a third year Design for Industrial student at Northumbria University. Since a young child, I have been interested in Art and Design. I developed my passion for Industrial design during my Extended Diploma Art and Design course at York College. My college tutor encouraged me to follow my passion and continue further studies to become an industrial designer. Through my course at Northumbria University, I began to understand the basics of the Industry. I truly enjoy every part of my challenging course and believe design can provide a better standard of living for everyone. I am looking for a 1-3 months placement starting in June, 2016 to practice my skills and learn more from working designer through live projects. Thank you.

1 RSA Student Design Awards 2015/16 Waste Not, Want Not Design a way to encourage and support individuals, households, business and/or communities to reduce food waste Project duration: 3 months Personal Project

Initial Research and Ideas

Vegetables are mostly left uneaten

They refuse to eat them due to not having tried them before; not liking the taste; or not being in the mood to eat

Through speaking to different age group, I found that comparing to other age groups, 3-5 year olds are unaware of how much food they waste Therefore, I decided to nurseries to observe children they have lunch and find out insights about children and waste

visit while more food

Routines are very important for learning to this age group

They really enjoy story time, which is them being read to, and which occurs twice a day at nursery

As I found some interesting insights, I stayed to observe what the children do daily at the nursery to find a direction for a solution to teach children to reduce food waste

Solution A story book to encourage them to eat vegetables and not to waste food

Initial story and character ideas

It was Tony’s first time having a carrot but he doesn’t seem like he wants to take a bite

By the end of the week, Mr Earth for the Farmer came to collect their his compost bin and found 7 of his carrots within

At Tony’s house, it was breakfast time. Tony asked his mummy if he can have an apple.

Mr Earth explained that he is unwell because he is sad. Sad that he found 7 of his carrots in someone’s bin. Then Tony realised it was him who throw away the carrots and made Mr Earth sad.

He said sorry to Mr Earth and asked for another chance to try his carrots

He gave it a bit … and a second bit and finally he finished the whole carrot. ‘I love carrots’ he cried ‘Why did I never try?’

Product

A 20 page illustrated story book about a little boy who would not try carrots, and who upsets Mr Earth the farmer This book is part of the Mr Earth book series which progresses in levels to encourage children to eat vegetables

A doll of Mr Earth, the beloved character of the book, which will become the close friend of children, and will also encourage them to eat vegetables

A Mr Earth shopping bag for parents to use when food shopping. The children would be reminded of the story when they see it

The story - “The Little Boy Who Wouldn’t Take A Bite”

User Journey

The child would build an emotional attachment to the main characters of the book Mr Earth the Farmer The beloved protagonist of the series

The Little Boy

A character that 3-5 year olds can relate to

When Mr Earth is upset, the child is upset for him

When Mr Earth is happy, the child is happy for him The child loves Mr Earth and would eat vegetables to make him happy

Mr Earth Story Series

At Nursery

A story series which tackles the reasons behind children’s refusal to eat vegetables, and which also helps change their attitudes towards vegetables

At Home

After Food Shopping

Benefits of the book series

• allowing children to build confidence in eating vegetables • helping nursery teachers/parents to convince children to eat vegetables • prompting nursery teachers to expand on what they’ve already learned about fruit, vegetables, and healthy eating general • Reducing food waste at households and nurseries • Educating a new generation that will waste less food than we do

Before eating, teachers can read to the children, and during meals, they can remind the children of the plot of the story to encourage them to try vegetables

Before eating, parents can read to their children, and during meals, parents can remind them what happens in the story to encourage them to eat vegetables they don’t like

When children see the shopping bag, it will remind them of the story, so they will learn to be grateful for their vegetables, and not to be moody while eating

A Story To Reduce Food Waste

“the story has had a positive impact on the children and their eating habits.

2 Lexus Design Award 2015 Theme: Senses Lexus Design Award 2015 introduced the theme of senses(seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching) to encourage young designers to explore the possibilities of engaging people through design inspired by senses. Project duration: 2 months Persoanl Project

Design Development

Smell can bring positive energy and emotion. Based on this, I have developed a build your own flower set for children between the age of 4, 5 years old. The nice smell of flowers will motivate the making of the flowers and their curiosity to learn more about it.

Logo & Packaging

The logo and packaging are aimed to appeal to young children and to reflect the theme of flowers. The illustration of the packaging concentrated on explaining the product as it is an unusual toy with step by step instructions. The packaging is designed as ‘vases’ to be playful and make it usable after it has been taken home.

User Journey

3 Philips Life project with Philips Philps as a brand is more associated with 30+. Therefore, we were given a live project of how to attract young audiences to use Philips products. My team decided to focus on creating a user journey for a teenager who is starting to shave Project duration: 2 months Group Project

Research

We looked back at when we first started to care about our own appearance (14-15 years old)

We were confused of what to do about our styling and had no idea how to use electric grooming products

We styled and dressed like our friends as we had not yet found our own style for grooming or fashion

Social media became a large part of our lifes. It has influenced our grooming and stying decisions

Solution

A review section from the users of the Philips 123 range of the shaver

An app to guide the user on every step of their shaving journey

The app is based on a series of shavers for 3 different age groups of male teenager. This allows teenagers who is starting to grow mustaches at different age to join Philips123 to find a shaver that suits them

An initial search base on the user’s age to recommend the shaver which may suit them

Videos to allow the user to learn more on grooming and styling their mustache

The experience of unlocking the app will give an exclusive feeling to the owners of the 123 range shaver

A forum to allow the user to post questions about shaving and to receive other grooming news and advices

A personal message with an upgrade voucher to encourage the user to purchase the next chapter of shaver

Interaction Philips tutorial

Pop up message to remind the user to change parts of his shaver

Selfies can be uploaded to competitions to win Philips prizes

The user will hopefully continues his shaving journey with Philips

4 Seven Stories Seven Stories for 7-12 year old Seven Stories, a national centre for children’s books, aim to encourage children between the age of 7-12 to visit and return to Seven Stories. Also, they hope to inspire this group of children to read for pleasure. Project duration: 2 months Group Project

Through speaking to 7-12 year old and their parents, we found Shared Experience This age group still enjoy being read to by both parents and teacher Imagination & Creativity This age group likes to think of their own stories and make them through writing and drawing Use of Technology This age group understands how to use technology and uses it to play games through apps Re-telling Story This age groups like to tell others the stories that they have created

Solutions

We have developed initial ideas and presented to our client. They liked the below 4 ideas which we have further developed

Creating a persona to promote Seven Stories

A Stop Motion workshop to allow children to create 7 second video to upload to Vine

A space to allow children to draw out their 7 favourite chapters of a book

A space to allow children to look at illustrations and create their own stories that will be displayed

Seven Short Stories

I worked on tale 3 as I have created the initial idea. For tale 3, We created a model for the set and the user journey

The child looks at the Illustation on the wall and starts writing their story based on what they see

The child sticks their work on a magnetic wall and can walk around to have a look at each others work.

At the end of the exhibition, the outstanding work would be framed and displayed alongside the illustration.

For the exhibition of the writing, we aim to allow the child ,whose work have been selected, to bring back their family to have a look at what they have achived. Also, we aim to attract children to visit the exhibition as we are displaying children’s work

6 Non Literal Form

A brief to design and make a product that has no prescribed function but consciously manipulate as an electronic product to explore form and how to engage user’s attention. My forms was inspired by the easy grip and playfulness of Toddlers’ toys.

7 Model Making Lego Man

To make a 1:3 scale Lego, I measured a Lego man and set up an Illustrator file to work out how the finish model would look like. The model is hand sanded at the end for a smooth finish.

8 Photoshop

Egg box rendering This project required us to pay attention to make the egg box look realistic in Photoshop. During the project, I had been looking back at a Happy egg box to decide where to shade light and dark. At last, the logo was added on to allow the viewer to identify the brand

9 Solidworks

The plastic spanner and grid was made in Solidworks and exported into Photoshop to create a user journey of how to use the spanner and grid.
