SELECTED WORKS 2013-2017
Eason has designed successful and innovative projects for a range of luxury residential, institutional hospitality, landscape design, retail projects and culture projects in Taiwan, New York, and Shanghai. He has been project architect in SPAN Architecture New York since 2013. He has also been involved with young architectural designers exhibition in New York, the goal is to enhance communication between Eastern and Western design. Selected works explore the relationship between artistic expression, mass media and graphic culture that has flourished from the 1980s. Being fascinated by East and West artictic culture, we belong to a generation that perfectly knows how individual desires can become collective opportunities.

The 7,500-square-foot, four-bedroom condominium includes four full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, large terraces, a spa, a 1500-square-foot terrace, and 2000-square attic space in front of central park. The main concept is to transform a storage space into residential penthouse. A clean, modern and serene aesthetic provides a haven in which this dynamic group can flourish. In addition, the visually stimulating, urban industrial landscape visible from the large bay windows of the main spaces created a desire for the office space to act as a simple background for the creative process. The minimalist approach to the furniture inhabiting the library, as well as the bookshelves surrounding the perimeter, add to the calm atmosphere. The communal and cavernous space of the library gives way to the organization of the various adjacent spaces, which are centered around the special requirements of various teams. Within this calm series of spaces and orderly arrangement of anchored functional elements with cross views through cut-outs in walls and overlapping corridors, enliven and energize the environment.

Design Team
OVE RVIE W Gotham West, located on West 45th Street in Manhattan, transforms a previously condemned block in Hell’s Kitchen into one of the largest residential developments in Manhattan in decades. The project demonstrates that complex, large-scale affordable housing developments are difficult, but also still possible in New York. The $520 million project has 1,258 apartments in four buildings, including 556 market-rate rentals in a 31-story tower that will help pay for the affordable units and generate $20 million for affordable housing elsewhere in the city.
S ITE / CO N T E X T In 1975, just as New York City was spiraling toward a fiscal collapse, it condemned most of a square block of warehouses, factories and stables in Hell’s Kitchen for a housing development. Thirty-seven years later, the site on West 45th Street is at last transformed into one of the largest residential developments in Manhattan in decades, following years of tenacious community lobbing for “affordable” housing.

To the east of the 31-story tower lies another one of the Gotham West buildings with its own entrance and amenity spaces. The scale of these spaces is much smaller than that of the large lounge, but the focus on using local fabricators and artists remains. We worked with New York based stone and wood workers to develop new furniture pieces, a banquette, a table and a console. Gilded and matte surfaces blend to create varied textures throughout the space. A silver leafed ceiling and a shell mosaic wall are paired with blackened steel and grey wood to align with, yet not mimic, the aesthetic developed in the larger building.

Project Architect
CO L L E C T IO N CON C E P T We began our concept design with a reverence for the original architecture intents of the Calvin Klein Collection stores. That architecture expressed a luxury that was at once discreet and sensual. Calvin Klein Collection has developed a serene and prismatic vocabulary of signature elements: niches, case goods, and lighting that are immediately identifiable with the brand. It was our intent to “evolve” this iconic language into a new paradigm. We proposed a twofold design strategy: firstly, we proposed a new spatial element in the form of a “salon” that acts s both bridge and filter between the programmatic elements of the store. Secondly, we proposed the merging of many of the original “details” and elements into a series of “regulating lines” that are both iconic and flexible.

The proposal utilizes several uncompromising cuts to the silo’s interior, in order to open the space up to more light and create a sense of character for the new museum. The existing space is considered to be one of Norway’s finest examples of Functionalism and was additionally one of the first grain silos in the country to be constructed with cylindrical cells made of reinforced concrete.

FL OATIN G S TA IR The main challenge given was how to bring clean modern aesthetics to a building with a rich and luxurious history. We responded by using a great deal of restraint in detailing the space while trying to stay true to the original character of the building. Rich luxurious wood stone materials and textures were deployed to bring life and a sense of sobriety, prominence and gravitas.

POOL HOUS E The wall references the materiality of the existing stone house and rubble landscape walls bounding the property. The beams are a tour-de-force of milling pushing the limits of length for a single piece of cedar. They frame an interior/ exterior series of spaces of which only the changing room, bath and sitting room are weatherized. The sitting room is a transformable space capable of being enclosed or fully opened to the exterior through a series of sliding wood and glass walls. There is an exterior fireplace adjacent to the dining area and a sunken lounge from which the hot tub also can serve as another seating zone.

Overlooking the original structures’ historic gardens, the guesthouse is nestled into the hillside by a stone and cedar plinth housing a potting shed, garage and storage. A two-bedroom cottage is set above and is sheathed in glass, blackened metal, and dark cedar. Furniture is considered an integral part of the architecture and every custom designed piece, from beds, to tables, to steamer trunks, tactilely and conceptually engages an adjacent architectural surface.

To create a gallery setting with residential detailing and warmth which as a whole would provide a modern and equally sophisticated back drop to these free standing elements. This was accomplished by ensuring spaces were seamlessly connected, that material application was sublime and that the details were taut and rigorously simple. There is a balance which results in the sum being greater than the parts.

S TAIR AS A CO UN T ER A clean, modern and serene aesthetic provides a haven in which this dynamic group can flourish. In addition, the visually stimulating, urban industrial landscape visible from the large bay windows of the main spaces created a desire for the office space to act as a simple background for the creative process.

It was designed to be like an urban cave with surfaces all clad with marble. Light is diffused through custom drapes by Ravi Design, bringing natural light in with the continued layered “wave” idea from the lobby. This will give guests a sense of open space and yet still allows privacy. Neutral colors mixed with bold dark tones helps to divide rooms while horizontal lines on wall panels throughout the spa offers the cave like oasis.
