tephanie Tyson opened Sweet Potatoes with partner and floor manager Vivian Joiner in 2003. This spring, Chef Tyson was nominated for Best Chef in the Southeast in the prestigious James Beard Awards. She credits her grandmother’s influence as very important in developing early interests that eventually led to a career. She attended Baltimore International Culinary College and graduated on the Dean’s List. The concept centers on southern styles, professionally executed. Located in Winston-Salem’s arts district, the restaurant’s entry leads to a long bar along the right, bare table seating inside, and a pleasant, shaded patio outdoors. Interior décor reinforces the southern theme, with prints illustrating jazz. Servers are southern-gracious-friendly, deliveries prompt. You absolutely should not miss the Fried Green Tomato and Okra Basket starter. Breaded and fried okra joins tart sliced green tomatoes, crisp, hot, and delicious. I’ve never had better. Fried Pork Rind Basket is classic Deep Souththink extremely light potato chips that taste like bacon. Everybody at our table loved them. These come with “Mambo sauce,” kind of a sweetish barbecue sauce.
You actually taste the greens in Collard Green Dip, although the flavor of melted Blue cheese is a little stronger, albeit well balanced. Crumbled bacon rounds out the flavor profile. The serving is surrounded by crackers, and they work fine, but I actually liked combining the dip with pork rinds even better! Several sandwiches, burgers, and salads provide the more casual section of the menu. We tried the Camel City Barbecue Chicken sandwich, a complex assembly of breast meat, smoky housemade barbecue sauce, smoked provolone cheese, fresh-cooked bacon, and crisp tobacco onions, hosted on a brioche bun. It’s a winner. A Southern-themed restaurant must serve first-class fried chicken, and Sweet Potatoes wins solid points on this criterion. Their chicken is pan-fried in fatback. It’s tender and moist, served steaming hot, with nary a drop of grease in evidence. But the flavor of the fatback sure comes through. That’s a compliment! Miss O’s Fish Plate features flounder, fried, plus French fries, creamy coleslaw, and a sweet potato muffin. The fish has a pleasantly crisp exterior, giving way to a puffy-tender white interior. A lot of places use a cheaper fish on fried platters. Kudos to this kitchen for sticking to quality. And those muffins are worth a special trip in their own right.

FRIED CHICKEN
My serving of Salmon Florentine used two slices of salmon, a little on the thin side, lightly blackened, just a bit dry, but still fully flavorful, plus two tender shrimp perched on top. This rests on fresh spinach, all assembled over a slice of toasted sweet potato cornbread ladled with a warm mushroom vinaigrette, interspersed with fresh mushroom slices.
BBQ Shrimp and Grits earned the highest praise of our visits. “I don’t like grits,” remarked unindicted co-conspirator Tracy, “but I like these!” They are prepared with cream, among the richest I have tasted. Jumbo shrimp are sautéed tender, covered with homemade sweetish barbecue jus, blended with Jack Daniels infused butter and cheese.

Spaghetti with a Drawl is well-named. If your grandmother had been a really good cook, and she was Italian but spent time in the Deep South blending the two cultures, this is something she might have created. with fried chicken tenders. There’s a lot going on here, all good! We ordered a side of pinto beans, since this just seemed to fit the restaurant’s theme. Thus, I discovered a hitherto unrecognized wine pairing. Pinto beans and pinot noir. A mellifluous match! Of course, you can’t go to a restaurant named Sweet Potatoes without trying

their Sweet Potato Pie. It’s great, oozing the natural flavor of the main ingredient. Bread Pudding is a winner, too. Before opening the Winston-Salem property, Chef Tyson worked in Charleston at 82 Queen and Charleston Place Hotel, and in Key West at Planet Hollywood and The Pier House Hotel. She was on the opening team of the Rainforest Café at Animal Kingdom in Orlando, worked for a year at a country club in Arizona, then eventually moved back to the East Coast. I have called this restaurant a “treasure.” I continue to consider that a good characterization. And the Beard team certainly showed good judgment when they recognized Chef Tyson! !

Sweet Sounds of the Summer Solstice

ummer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the street. Or through the Greensboro Arboretum for the 18th annual Summer Solstice Festival on Katei Cranford June 18. “Prepare to be dazzled with eclectic Contributor world music, a riveting drum circle, and a fire finale that will light up your life,“ said organizers — who invite attendees to “come play with the fairies” and rejoice the longest day of the year, with a familyfriendly festival of fae-folk, music, art and community celebration. Recalling the sorts of magic the festival has “sprinkled” over its 17-year run, “Head Faerie” Sue Sassmann is excited to debut a new area dedicated to Flow Arts as well as offer returning crowd favorites like the parasol parade, drum circle and fire
show. “They’re the highlights of the day,” Sassmann said of the planned festivities; and more than 100 artists and vendors showcasing wares. Sassmann isn’t alone in her efforts, praising the volunteers and “Solstice dream team” of event organizers, each with their own fae-title reflecting their talents — all of whom are “most grateful to the citizens of the Triad for their ongoing support of the most creative event in the land,” she said. “Our focus is always to highlight local entrepreneurs and talent so that they may continue to prosper and revitalize our community.” With that, the 2022 festival will partner as a fundraiser for Triad Musicians Matter, a 501c3 non-profit that provides financial support to area musicians and creatives in events of illness or injury. Triad musicians certainly matter to “Muse-ic Faerie” Stephanie Coolbaugh, who conveys admiration for Sassmann and adoration for the festival’s work. “The Solstice was her brainchild,” Coolbaugh said. “The event she threw together 18 years ago has grown into something

Fae Folk will descend on the Greensboro Arboretum this weekend for the Solstice. so deeply ingrained in our community. It’s become a tradition for our families, an opportunity for our local artists and vendors; and ultimately, a day built to create lasting, fond memories for people to reflect upon.” Turning to the solstice itself, “it’s a day of reflection on human resiliency and the joy of making it through another year,” Coolbaugh continued. “In times as tough and isolating as these, it is important to take stock of the ways in which we can still come together in community with each other.” Building community through song and dance is central — with a fresh music focus that expands across genres and two stages to feature a mix of artists from around the state (and globe). For Coolbaugh, “my main goal has been to primarily support GSO and NC-based, BIPOC, and gender-expansive artists,” they said. “I really hope to reflect in our actions what it means to have a festival that supports every facet of our local community.” Gushing about the lineup, Coolbaugh is especially excited for the festival headliners: Greensboro’s SunQueen Kelcey and the Soular Flares and the Afro-Brazilian artist, Caique Vidal. “SunQueen is one of the first artists I fell in love with when I moved to the area six years ago. Her energy is absolutely infectious, and her music is all about self-love and positivity; which just captures the Solstice vibe perfectly. Plus, her name is SunQueen!! It couldn’t be more appropriate.” Folk fest fans may be familiar with the Durham-based Caique Vidal, who performed as part of the 2021 NC Folk Festival. Steeped in the Afro-Brazilian tradition, he’s toured internationally with performances and educational programs.
“We’re so lucky to have him play,” Coolbaugh noted, with props to other regional artists like the Dixieland jazzers in Second Line Stompers; and violinist, Emanuel Wynter. Repping the Triad hometeam is Housewife, a new alternative group that features a “mix of everything;” Shiela’s Traveling Circus, a blues outfit around powerhouse ringleader, Shiela Klinefelter and her revolving cast of Triad wonders like Chuck Cotton, Richard Hannar, Rob French, and Scott Nixon. On the flip, the Joy Band will offer the rock’n’roll upbeat; Winston-Salem reggae group, Liontracks, brings the fire; and Solstice staple, Renee Henry, will pluck her harp, as she’s done since the festival’s very first year. And while Coolbaugh relishes a full musical experience, the finale fire show remains a favorite part of her day. “It’s the time I finally get to catch my breath knowing we’ve made it through another successful Solstice,” she said, praising the talents of fire dancers Scott Hinzman and Sydney Vigotov. “They’re real professionals; deliver unfathomable routines while always maintaining a safe environment for guests and performers.” Safety and whimsy are a prerogative for the “Solstice Dream Team,” who hope to, “deliver a magical memory for thousands of children and adults who are delighted to engage in an inclusive experience.” As blossoms fill the summer bounty, they invite the Triad to “wander through our dream. And be a part of the magic!” Revel in the warmth of the Greensboro Summer Solstice Festival, on June 18 at the Greensboro Arboretum. ! Terror takes shape again: The Thing rings in 40 years Very few remakes equal, much less surpass, the original films, but I firmly believe John Carpenter’s 1982 version of The Thing is that rarity. All due respect to the 1951 original (which Mark Burger starred James Arness as The Thing!), Carpenter’s adaptation Contributor was more faithful, more frightening, and may well be his masterpiece. It didn’t seem that way at first, as the film received unaccountably negative, even vicious, reviews upon its release — primarily due to the ground-breaking special effects of Rob Bottin, which were truly original and truly horrifying. Leonard Maltin, Vincent Canby (of The New York Times), and even Cinefantastique — a magazine devoted to fantasy, horror, and science-fiction — all gave the film reviews that weren’t so much negative as angry and appalled. Yet like its title character, The Thing refused to die, becoming a staple of cable television and home video, and truly underwent a truly phoenix-like resurrection in critical appraisal. It is now considered by many to be a classic of the genre and has inspired such acclaimed contemporary filmmakers as Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, J.J. Abrams, Neill Blomkamp, and countless others. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of its release, Fathom Events and Universal Pictures have joined forces to present The Thing at 800 cinemas nationwide, two of which are here in the Piedmont Triad: The film will be screened at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, and 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 22nd at the Regal Greensboro Grande Stadium 16 (3205 Northline Ave., Greensboro) and the Regal Palladium Stadium 14 (5830 Samet Drive, High Point). Tickets are $13.34 and can be ordered here: https://www.fathomevents.com/. Set in Antarctica 1982, the film depicts the mounting horror when the members of a U.S. scientific base discover a nearby Norwegian base in ruins and evidence of an alien spacecraft that had been frozen in the ice for centuries, perhaps longer. Shortly thereafter, they find themselves terrorized by the alien being, which has the ability to replicate its victims. The themes the film addresses are timeless: Mistrust and paranoia. In the best Agatha Christie tradition, anyone could be a “Thing” and everyone’s WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
a suspect. Some observers interpreted The Thing as an AIDS allegory, which the filmmakers did not intend — although that allegory was more applicable to Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness (1987), which shares a number of thematic similarities to The Thing. The Thing marked Carpenter’s third collaboration with Kurt Russell, having previously worked with him in the 1979 TV movie Elvis and the 1981 cult classic Escape from New York, and he’s surrounded by a peerless ensemble cast: A. Wilford Brimley, Donald Moffat, Richard Dysart, Keith David, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Richard Masur, Charles Hallahan, Thomas G. Waites, Peter Maloney, and Joel Polis — and every actor is at the top of his game. In addition to Bottin’s special effects, some of which were created in collaboration with the late, great Stan Winston, the ominous score by Ennio Morricone further enhances the tension, and this version of The Thing is actually more faithful to John W. Campbell’s 1938 novella Who Goes There? than the earlier film. The screenplay, by Bill Lancaster, is filled with quotable lines — most of which could not be reprinted in a family newspaper. However, this one can be: “I don’t know what the hell’s in there, but it’s weird and pissed-off, whatever it is!” Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune to interview Carpenter, David, and cinematographer Dean Cundey. Carpenter and Cundey (also long-time collaborators) both said that making The Thing was one of the highlights of their life, yet their enthusiasm was tempered by the vicious critical reception at the time. David, who made his screen debut in The Thing and later reunited with Carpenter in They Live (1988), laughed when he recalled his concerns that he would be fired because he broke his arm shortly before filming commenced. (If you look closely, you can see that one arm is more mobile than the other.) Some things are worth waiting for, no pun intended, and John Carpenter’s The Thing achieving classic status is one of them. In addition to the film, this presentation also includes vintage, behind-the-scenes footage from Michael Matessino’s 1998 documentary The Thing: Terror Takes Shape, which was included in the first DVD special edition. Institutional child sex abuse… AGAIN
ust as with murder and other heinous crimes, I suppose that sexual abuse of children has probably gone on since the beginning of time. But there is also evidence Jim Longworth to suggest that such abuse was institutionally committed Longworth and protected at at Large least as far back as the 11th century. In 1051, Peter Damian, a Benedictine monk published “Liber Gomorrhianus,” in which he detailed sexual abuses of minors by Catholic clergy. We also know that such practices were common throughout history, including those reported by Martin Luther in 1531. In his book “Out of the Storm: the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther,” author Derek Wilson recounted Luther’s report about how Pope Leo X refused to restrict the number of boys that priests could keep
for pleasure. Leo was also determined to keep this institutionalized sodomy from public scrutiny, a practice that many of his predecessors successfully continued until an inordinate number of victims began to come forward in this century. According to a study by John Jay College of Criminal Justice, between 1950 and 2002, no less than 4,392 active priests and deacons were accused of sexual abuse by 10,667 victims. But the number of reported abuses kept growing with each passing year. According to records of the Holy See, in 2014, Silvano Maria Tomasi testified before a committee of the United Nations, reporting that between 2004 and 2014 alone, the church investigated 3,420 cases of sexual abuse of minors, resulting in 884 priests being demoted to lay positions. Three years later Pope Francis admitted the problem was so vast that the Vatican had a backlog of more than 2,000 cases of sex abuse by priests that needed to be investigated. Just as the Catholic Church was finally having to deal with these horrific crimes and start to compensate victims, so too
was the Boy Scouts of America, whose leadership had, for decades, kept the names of child sex abusers hidden from public view. In 2019, ABC News reported that as many as 12,254 boy scouts had been sexually abused by 7,819 troop leaders and volunteers. Then in 2021, NBC News reported that a total of 84,000 former boy scouts had joined a lawsuit against BSA, resulting in a settlement of $850 million dollars. Some news pundits wondered if scouting would survive the scandal, and if the Catholic Church was serious about transparency and reforms. Meanwhile, others of us hoped that the worst of these abuses and cover-ups was behind us. Then last month, the Associated Press published excerpts from a 288-page report by Guidepost Solutions, which claimed that two Southern Baptist Convention leaders (now retired) had maintained a secret list of “hundreds of pastors and other church-affiliated personnel who had been accused of sexual abuse.” SBC interim president Willie McLaurin immediately issued a public apology, saying, “We are sorry to the survivors for all we have done
to cause pain and frustration. Now is the time to change the culture. We have to be proactive in our openness and transparency from now.” McLaurin’s apology is a good first step, but we also need to bring to justice those who committed the abuses as well as those who covered them up. Meanwhile, no one knows for sure how many minors have been sexually molested by SBC employees, Scout leaders, or priests because not every victim reports the crime, plus, the number of those who do come forward is growing daily. What we do know, however, is that, according to the CDC, 91% of child sexual abuse is committed by someone who is known to and trusted by the child or the child’s family. The question now is, will victims ever again come to trust the institutions that caused them so much pain, and are those institutions serious about reforms that could help to rebuild that trust? I hope the answer to that question is “Yes.” ! JIM LONGWORTH is the host of Triad Today, airing on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. on ABC45 (cable channel 7) and Sundays at 11 a.m. on WMYV (cable channel 15).

Stay Prayed Up is a celebration of song and spirit
S
tay Prayed Up, the feature documentary edited, shot, produced, and co-directed by D.L. Anderson and Matthew Durning, is a spirited celebraMark Burger tion of Gospel music and a loving tribute to Lena “Mae” Perry, Contributor a life-long Raleigh native who fronted The Branchettes, one of North Carolina’s most popular and beloved Gospel groups. Perry, commonly known as “Sister Perry” or “Mother Perry,” recounts her life and career in a unique fashion that embraces both pride and humility. She may be assertive, but it’s not about her ego, it’s about the music. As an expression of her faith, it simply has to be the best it can be. It’s about God and family, which to a great extent defines who Perry is and what she believes in. If you’re only going to give it second-best, why bother? When she’s not singing or cooking — and Perry once owned and operated a popular eatery in Raleigh — she offers spiritual counsel to friends and fellow parishioners. Having lost her oldest son, as well as her fellow Branchettes, she’s weathered some trying times, but it’s her unswerving faith that has kept her grounded. Her philosophy of simple: Everything is part of God’s plan, and one simply must accept that. Although Perry is front and center throughout, the film also introduces us to Phil Cook (also one of the film’s producers), a record producer who was first inspired by Gospel music when he saw the 1992 film Sister Act (!). It was he who was determined to capture Perry’s performances on a record, and upon meeting her he too was captivated by her. There’s also Wilbur Tharpe, the endlessly affable piano player who shared Perry’s enthusiasm while his playing enhanced her performance. Sadly, Tharpe died in 2021, and the film is (lovingly) dedicated to him. It’s difficult not to be swept up in Perry’s zest for life, particularly during the
performance scenes, and, when she briefly discusses the racism that The Branchettes faced, it’s difficult not to cringe when there’s a shot of a “Welcome to North Carolina” road sign prefaced with the legend “You are in the heart of Klan country.” Yet this was simply another hurdle to overcome, and she did so without rancor. Lest one think that Stay Prayed Up is a series of sermons, it’s not, nor is its appeal limited to a specifically “faith-based” audience. It’s a consistently engaging and entertaining exploration of how Perry has shared her faith, and her undeniable gifts, with those around her. We only have one life, and it’s meant to be savored, enjoyed, and communicated with others. The filmmakers refrain from any untoward flashiness, because such an approach is simply unnecessary. Perry has a simple, straightforward outlook on life, and the film reflects that. In many ways, the film is a character, and Perry is nothing if not a memorable character who exudes compassion and moral fortitude — and, let’s face it, when she lets loose it’s a seismic event, filled with heart, passion, and perseverance. — Stay Prayed Up opens Friday ! [NEWS OF THE WEIRD] INEXPLICABLE
Down at the Amarillo (Texas) Zoo, it isn’t the animal exhibits inside that are sparking excitement among the city’s residents. “In the dark and early morning hours” of May 21, Chuck Shepherd the city reported in a June 8 news release, security cameras captured a mysterious creature outside the fence — part “person with a strange hat,” part “large coyote on its hind legs,” part “Chupacabra,” the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. “We just want to let the Amarillo community have some fun with this,” director of Parks and Recreation Michael Kashuba said, asking locals to weigh in with their ideas about what the Unidentified Amarillo Object — UAO — might be. “It is important to note that this entity was outside the Amarillo Zoo,” he added. “There were no signs of criminal activity or vandalism.”
SPECIAL DELIVERY
When Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a crash on June 2, they found an SUV that had slammed into a FedEx truck, and it was quickly apparent what had caused the collision, WPLG-TV reported. Inside the SUV were a man and woman, both naked, and at the time of the crash, the woman was performing a sex act on the male driver, first responders reported. Two people in the FedEx truck sustained minor injuries; the male SUV driver had injuries to his “private area.”
DON’T BUG ME!
During court proceedings on June 7 at the Albany City Court in New York, a defendant who started filming an arraignment was asked to stop, NBC New York reported. During the altercation that followed, a 34-year-old woman in the audience allegedly released hundreds of cockroaches from plastic containers into the courtroom, resulting in the courthouse being closed for the rest of the day for fumigation. “What transpired is not advocacy or activism, it is criminal behavior with the intent to disrupt a proceeding and cause damage,” noted a statement from the Office of Court Administration.
GASSED
Reynold Gladu took over his gas station in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1973. But at least for now, he no longer sells fuel, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reported on June 7. When his pumps ran dry this

month, he didn’t refill them because he can’t abide the prices. “I don’t want to be a part of it anymore,” he said. “This is the biggest rip-off that ever has happened to people in my lifetime.” His station will continue to do oil changes and other service, but, he said, “Enough is enough.” A spokesperson for ExxonMobil said prices are out of her company’s control, being “influenced by the price of crude and wholesale price of products which fluctuate according to demand and supply factors.” But Gladu isn’t buying it — “It seems like the oil industry is in this together” — or selling it.
THE LITIGIOUS SOCIETY
GEICO General Insurance Co. must pay a woman identified only as M.O. a $5.2 million settlement, the Missouri Court of Appeals ruled on June 7, after she contracted the sexually transmitted disease HPV from an insured member during intimate relations in his automobile. The Kansas City Star reported that the Jackson County woman contacted GEICO in February 2021, and the company sent the case to arbitration. Four months later, the arbitrator found that the man was liable for not disclosing his infection status, and M.O. was awarded the large sum, to be paid by GEICO. The company appealed, but the three-judge panel upheld the decision.
ADVENTURES IN REAL ESTATE
Danielle Cruz and her husband purchased and renovated a home in Chicago, but after listing it for sale, they found out someone was already living there. ABC7TV reported that a contractor showed up to make a repair to the presumably vacant house and reported to Cruz that someone was inside the home. He also told her all the locks had been changed. “We honestly thought he was joking because we knew the house was vacant,” Cruz said. “So we show up with the cops, and there’s a young woman in there with all of her belongings.” The woman said she had signed a month-to-month lease with a “landlord,” and because she produced a lease, the police couldn’t ask her to vacate. Real estate attorney Mo Dadkhah said the case would probably be referred to the Cook County eviction courts — but they’re very backed up. “The process could take six, 12, 18 months,” he said. Cruz’s other option is “cash for key” — offering the renter money to leave. But so far, Cruz can’t get her to respond. !

elcome to our favorite issue of the year, The Triad’s Best! As many of you may know, this is our biggest issue all year, and something we spend several months working on. People from all over North America, Europe, Asia, and even as far as Australia made their voices heard by choosing all of their Triad favorites. After a year like 2020 and 2021, we are excited to see things events, festivals, people starting to go out in the Triad and things getting back to normal. With a renewed sense of community and pride, sit back and celebrate the winners and runnersup of the Triad’s Best readers’ poll. While you’ll see familiar winners, we hope this issue will be an opportunity for you to discover many newcomers who have won some of the top awards. The way we listed everyone this year is pretty simple: There are “first-place winners,” “secondplace winners,” and “runners-up.” As voting was fierce and highly competitive, you will see additional runners-up listed. This was done due to the closeness of the vote counts, and in some cases, ties in the runner-up categories. There are many people to thank for making the 2022 issue possible:

Weatherspoon Art Museum
Triad’s Best Art Gallery
T
he Weatherspoon Art Museum, located on the campus of the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. Founded in 1941 by Gregory Ivy, the first head of the Art Department at the then Woman’s College, the Weatherspoon has taken on the role of a nationally recognized museum offering unique and dynamic exhibits and collections for those at the school and the surrounding area to view. Long gone are the days of the gallery being used as just a “teaching gallery” as the museum serves a broad audience of over 32,000 visitors annually, including UNCG students, faculty and staff; the Triad communities; and visitors from across the state, region, and nation; and an additional 24,000 students who take art history classes in the building. In addition to a schedule of more than 15 exhibitions each year, the American Association of Museum accredited museum maintains a full roster of educational activities, publications, and
outreach efforts as integral components of its overall program. From its inception, the museum has focused on building a permanent collection of modern and contemporary American art that is now considered one of the best in the Southeast. Numbering close to 6,000 works, the collection represents all major art movements from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. The Weatherspoon’s exhibition calendar offers visitors the opportunity to see and learn directly from significant examples of modern and contemporary art. The schedule includes work by outstanding artists of national and international reputation; thematic exhibitions on timely aesthetic, cultural, and social issues; small focused exhibitions of emerging artists; selections from the permanent collection; UNCG MFA thesis shows and faculty biennials; and Falk Visiting Artist exhibitions, a collaborative program with the UNCG Department of Art.

Triad’s Best For Family Fun in Guilford
JUNE 15-21, 2022
W
ith a three in one attraction, it’s no wonder that the Greensboro Science Center won first place title as the Triad’s Best For Family Fun in Guilford County. The education, interactive center is a premier family attraction in North Carolina that offers the state’s first accredited inland aquarium, a handson science museum, an accredited Animal Discovery Zoological Park, a state-of-the-art OmniSphere Theater, and SKYWILD, an animalinspired treetop adventure park. Located at 4301 Lawndale Drive in Greensboro, the 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization offers special attraction, themed and unthemed, throughout the year for Triad residents. Recently, the Greensboro Science Center has announced to new exhibits. The Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center and Butterfly House and the Amazing Butterflies traveling exhibit. In the Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center and Butterfly House, guests can see native butterflies up close and
discover how they can put conservation into action by choosing garden plants that serve as hosts and food sources for pollinators. The Amazing Butterflies exhibit, created by The Natural History Museum in London in collaboration with Minotaur Mazes, invites guests to shrink down into the undergrowth to become one of the most extraordinary creatures on earth. A challenging journey teeming with friends and foes will reveal the unusual relationship between caterpillars, butterflies and their natural surroundings. Guests go on an adventure through the leaves, learn how to move like a caterpillar, discover an ant that reaps the reward of an unusual friendship, then transform into a butterfly and take flight. Families can explore the interactive experience and learn the surprising challenges butterflies face every day. With all of these things to do and unique exhibits, it’s also no surprise that the Greensboro Science Center has also been garnered the first place position in the Best Museum category.

Tanglewood Park
Triad’s Best Place for Family Fun in Forsyth
T
anglewood Park is a recreation center and park found in Clemmons. Most notably known for its annual “Tanglewood Festival of Lights,” with more than a million lights on display during the end of the year, celebrating the holidays the park has much more to offer and Forsyth County recognizes that. That is one reason its first place in the Triad’s Best Place for Family Fun in Forsyth County. Owned in 1951, the property was willed to Forsyth County “to share as a public recreation park.” The park boasts attractions like the Tanglewood Park Arboretum and Rose Garden, a public pool, a dog park, and the Tanglewood Stables, which offers trail rides, hayrides and carriage rides. Tanglewood offers two golf courses
and a Mallard Lake offers fishing and paddleboat renting. The Manor House, a Bed and Breakfast centered in the middle of the property, has 10 guest rooms, a sweeping staircase, a Rock Fireplace Room, a 20’s Room and the Trophy Room. The facilities are used for wedding, meetings and overnight accommodations. The park also won first place for Best Public Pool, second place for the Best Place to Ride a Bike, and runner up for Best Park in Forsyth County. Clearly Tanglewood Park is a gem in Forsyth County that offers a chance for recreation and play for those of all generations.

Taco Mama
Triad’s Best Lunch
T
aco Mama, in both Guilford and Forsyth Counties, is bringing the heat in this year’s YES! Weekly’s Triad’s Best. Located on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro and Burke Mill Road in Winston-Salem, the causal Mexican style restaurant chain debuted in Greensboro in 2017. The specialty taco bar originated in Alabama, and the Lawndale location was their flagship franchise here in North Carolina. Since the doors opened, people have been filling the tables and chairs, ordering tacos and tipping back margaritas, long before the North Carolina summer weather came back around. The interior style of the restaurant is eccentric yet classy. Filled with old-school artwork, accompanied by large-scale paintings and an extensive, colorful menu, a brightly lit bicycle, and Edison light bulbs draped from the exposed-wooden ceiling creates a hipster vibe for
authentic Mexican. A vibe that Triad residents have come to expect along with the array of great, affordable food. This year, both locations racked up almost 10 awards in the Triad’s Best. The chain, known for its handcrafted tacos, build your own burritos, free toppings and marvelous margaritas, takes first place in the Best Lunch category, Best Tacos in Forsyth County and Best Margaritas in Forsyth County. They take second place in the Best Margarita in Guilford County, Best Family Restaurant, Best Mexican Restaurant in Guilford County, Best Mexican Restaurant in Forsyth County and Best Taco in Guilford County categories. They came in as runner-up in the Best Cheap Eats category.

Cheesecakes by Alex
Triad’s Best Cheesecake
L
ocated in Downtown Greensboro is a little bakery that has made a big name for itself since its inception in 2002. Cheesecakes by Alex, located at 315 South Elm St. in Greensboro, begin with a simple request from Alex Amoroso’s mother in law for a cheesecake during the holiday season and has grown into the challenge of sharing with the entire Triad, and sometimes the nation. The family-owned bakery specializes in its title dessert, offering more than 20 year round flavors and two seasonal. It is no wonder they won first place in this year’s Triad’s Best Cheesecake. Offering cheesecakes in three sizes, the signature desserts can be pre-ordered, picked up or purchased by stopping by the store. Cheesecakes by Alex also offer a wholesale service to restaurants in the Triad and few places across North Carolina.
The sweet treat eatery was also won first place in the Triad’s Best Dessert Menu Category. You can also purchase your fair share of macaroons, whoopee pies, made from scratch cake slices, and assorted pastries. They also offer ice cream from Homeland Creamery, organic coffees and espressos from local roasters. With free Wi-Fi, coffee and a sweet treat, the venue is a perfect for grabbing a dessert and relaxing or working. Cheesecakes by Alex reigns due to their large variety of made from scratch desserts, and ability to ship conveniently across the nation with ease and confidence that your cakes will reach their destinations.

estled on the corner of North Main Street and Lexington Avenue in High Point is a jewel of store. Simon Jewelers, who won first place in this year’s Triad’s Best Jewelry Store category, has been serving the Triad from that location since 1997. Owned by Gary Simon, Simon Jewelers opened in High Point in 1988. Simon, son of a Norfolk, VA watchmaker, has retail jewelry in his DNA. According to the website, Gary’s “work ethic is rooted in integrity with vigorous and innovative attention to detail.” The store also touts that “customer service is the focal point around which all else revolves – where merchandising is driven by quality and value – and where exquisite

custom design work and outstanding repairs are available on-site.” The Simon Jewelers’ team continues to give back to the community in other ways, so you shouldn’t be surprised if you see the name at other venues in the Triad. The store’s website states that a percentage of all sales is reinvested in the community through charitable donations and/ or in-kind service and volunteer hours. They goal is to live out the Simon Jewelers philosophy: “Every day should be an occasion. When a customer walks through our doors, we want that person to feel honored and comfortable. The jewelry is secondary to the emotional atmosphere. The customer is the reason we are here.” - Gary Simon

Buie’s Market
Triad’s Best Grocery Store in Forsyth
B
uie’s Market is a full grocery shopping experience in the Winston-Salem. Named after the historic Buie’s Pharmacy, the market carried more than 50 local vendors and hundreds of national brands and healthy eating choices. The 2,000 square foot shot features a full espresso bar, acts as a pick up location for local chefs, eight draft taps and wine by the glass. The grocer offers a variety of fresh, packaged and prepared food, offering almost ten residents an opportunity at full- and part-time employment. The woman, majority owned business (owned by Stacy Doss and Kristin Holcomb) is located at the corner of Avalon and Spring Garden Roads,
serving Winston-Salem, Buena Vista and the surrounding areas. Buie’s Market will offer a selection of brewed coffee; craft beers and wines; non-alcoholic beverages; cheeses and dairy items; and an assortment of dry goods as well as canned and packaged local and regional staples. The market also will offer pastries, desserts and breads and a variety of fresh and frozen products including beef, pork, chicken, bison, fish and produce. Prepared foods to go will include selections from familiar local vendors. With such a big experience in a small business, there’s no question as to why they were voted first place in the Triad’s Best Grocery Store in Forsyth County category.
Thank you for all the love and continued support! It’s our pleasure to bring a boutique eyewear experience to our community.

Cheers to the Triad’s Best
S
ometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name — and with that, Triad musicians get their own round of cheers in the Triad’s Best 2022 reader poll. Katei Cranford Cover bands once again reign supreme Contributor with Camel City Yacht Club sailing in for the win for the top spot among the best “Tribute Bands,” along with Clay “Cap’n Morgan” Howard (aka “Best Vocalist,” “Best Songwriter,” and “Best Musician”). The crew themselves racked top slots, with Lauren “Fanny von Bottoms” Myers getting “Best Percussionist,” Greg “Tom Collins” Hurley winning “Best Guitarist,” and Jerry “Charlie Chardonnay IV” Chapman snagging second place for “Best Bassist.” “I’m thrilled for the recognition and very grateful for every vote!” Howard said. Keeping things smooth, the Camel City Yacht Club will play the CoalPit (voted “Most Unique Place to Hear Live Music”) in Winston-Salem on June 18; and will be at the “Summer on Liberty” series on July 31. Howard’s original outfit, the Silver

Alerts, will be with Buckcherry and Old Heavy Hands at the Ramkat (voted “Best Venue in Forsyth County”) on June 24 and on July 8 with Cracker at Ziggy’s.Space in High Point. Spinning into second place for “Best Tribute Band,” Spindle 45 adds another trophy to their fold; with drummer Faye Wilson topping the list for “Best Percussionist,” and Laurie Alley placing second for both “Best Vocalist” and “Best Musician.” “It’s an honor to place again this year,” Alley said. “Every year the field gets bigger and more amazing musicians come onto the scene. It’s a privilege and a blessing to be able to make music surrounded by such talented band members.” Spindle 45 has dates booked through the summer, with upcoming shows at the Garage Tavern on June 17; they’ll play with Matt Weiser for the “Piedmont Triad Supports Ukraine” show on June 18 at The Deck (voted second-place for “Best Venue in Guilford County” and runner-up for “Most Unique Place to Hear Live Music”) and will be at Rizzo’s (runner-up “Best Venue in Forsyth County”) on June 24. Runner-up is a charm for the Carolina Pines, who finished runner-up for “Best Tribute Band” with Mark Vestich coming in as runner-up for “Best Bassist,” Mark Miller as runner-up for “Best Guitarist,” and Cody Haviach as runner-up for “Best Songwriter.”
Viva La Muerte “We’re beyond honored and couldn’t be more excited,” Haviach said. “The Triad audience is the reason we keep coming out to play music.” While the group is working on new covers, the Pines are shifting into more original material. They’ve recently released the “Reckless Heart” single and video; with an upcoming album expected later in the year. They’ll be at Breathe Cocktail Lounge on June 17; at Old Nick’s Pub in Lewisville on June 18; and at Folly’s Draft and Snack (voted “Best Intimate Music Venue” and “Most Unique Place to Hear Live Music”) on June 25. Vagabond Saints Society’s take on the Rolling Stones rolled into the runner-up slot for “Best Live Show of 2021.” Fans can relive the experience on June 23 at the Ramkat for a special documentary screening from Director Carrissa Jones. VSS will take the stage as Duran Duran at the Ramkat on July 29. Gears and Guitars festival took the top prize for “Best Live Triad Music Show of 2021,” it’ll return September 9-11, while Hotwax and the Splinters at the Brewer’s Kettle snagged second place for “Best Live Show.” The “not your daddy’s bluegrass” outfit also placed second for “Best Original Band” while Clyde Lewis came in second for “Best Songwriter.” Lewis (who hosts the “Monday Night
Brewgrass Jam“ at Brewer’s Kettle in Kernersville) gave a special thanks to the “#SplinterNation” for the votes. “You’re the best fans in the Triad,” he said. “There’s no better feeling as a band than hearing patrons tell us that they never knew that they loved Bluegrass until seeing our show.” The Splinters return to the Brewer’s Kettle in High Point on June 18. Red Dirt Revival at BreakTime Billiards rocked the runner-up “Best Show,” with Robert “Red” Elliot snagging runner-up for “Best Musician.” They’ll be at Whiskey Sowers in Mebane on June 17; at Apps & Taps in Mooresville on June 18; and at Ziggy’s.Space on June 23. Killing Gophers killed as the top contender for “Best Original Band,” with Kevin Beroth winning “Best Bassist,” guitarist Mark McKernan and drummer Tim Bernthal took second place for their respective instruments. It’s a success to follow their latest album, “Get. In. Line,” which was recorded by Doug Williams at EMR Recorders (who won second place for “Best Recording Studio”). Work is already underway on a new record. They’ll be at Rizzo’s in Clemmons on July 9th, and at Bull City Cider Works in Lexington on July 17th. The Malamondos, meanwhile, rounded runner-up for “Best Original Band;” with drummer Jaysen Buterin taking runner-

Viva la Muerte will likewise welcome the fall as part of the “Fall Equinox Fest’’ at Oden Brewing (voted runner-up for “Best Brewery”) on Sep. 24. The group itself placed runner-up for “Best Original Band,” with drummer Wes Allen voted runner-up for “Best Percussionist.” Their summer schedule includes shows on June 25 at Oden; July 2 at Bull’s Tavern (voted “Best Intimate Music Venue” and runnerup for “Most Unique Place to Hear Live Music”); and Aug 6 at SouthEnd Brewing (voted “Best Chicken Wings in Guilford County,” second-place for “Best Brewery” WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM
and “Best Patio in Guilford County” and runner-up for “Best Guys Night Out For Fun”). For Muerte’s Matt Armstong, the recognition “means the world.” “We’ve been a Greensboro band for 17 years and to have our community recognize us is everything,” he said. “Especially during the year we put out our third album, ‘Storm Country.’” Recorded with Tom Troyer at Black Rabbit Audio (who won runnerup “Best Recording Studio”) “Storm Country” continues the Muerte trend of truth-telling and a “seat-of-the-pants” tradition. Ever-moving, Armstrong is currently working with Josh Watson (of The Grand Ole Uproar). “We hustle like minor league baseball players,” Armstrong said. “We play record stores, parties and pubs. We perform for free at March for Science protests. And we’re happy to do it because we love to play for our people.” Echoing the sentiment of gratitude shared by all of the winners, “none of this happens if we don’t have people,” he added, “so I just want to thank our fans and supporting musicians.” Thanks for voting, y’all. Cheers to the latest round of “Triad’s Best” winners. ! KATEI CRANFORD is a Triad music nerd who enjoys spotlighting artists and events.

Explore the World of Music with Ashley Virginia BY JORDYN WHITTED
DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS ARTSGREENSBORO Local musician, Ashley Virginia, is a Singer-Songwriter, Vocalist, Multi-Instrumentalist, Event and Content Producer, and in the most general sense, an Artist. She started playing and performing music at age five, and songwriting at age 13. She’s lived in Greensboro since 2014, and the community here has played a huge role in shaping her as a person and an artist. Ashley Virginia got her start performing in Greensboro at the underground college house shows scene and the local open mic scene. “My first gig playing my original music was in 2018 at Ben & Jerry’s in Friendly Center, and I was paid in ice cream,” she remembers. “It’s really cool to reflect on the artistic growth I have made and the communities I have found solace with since then.” “Writing music and being creative is therapeutic for me,” says Ashley Virginia when asked about her love for music. “It YES! helps me process living in a society that supports profit and individuality over collective wellness and healing. Creativity is why I get out of bed everyday and what gives my existence meaning.” Ashley Virginia is currently in postproduction for my second album, “The Colors in My Dreams”. The creation of the album was supported by grant funding
from Arts Greensboro. At the beginning of April, she was to record the album at a farmhouse in Glendon, North Carolina. During production, various collaborators dropped in and out to contribute to the recording process (Kevin Beardsley, Jacob Bruner, Evan Campfield, Julian CreechPritchett, Justin “Demeanor” Harrington, Alex Hornaday, Alexei Mejouev, Ricky Perez,
Cameron Rabb, Liam Trawick, Savannah Thorne, Tom Troyer/Black Rabbit Audio, Laura Jane Vincent, Savannah Thorne, and Alexis Ward). “This recording process was spectacular because we were completely immersed in the creative process, free from distractions of daily life,” says Ashley Virginia. “Other than one quick run-through rehearsal with the rhythm section, we did not do any rehearsing beforehand - I picked out the players, sent them lead sheets with the form for the songs, and the arrangements are what we came up with organically on the spot.” The whole week was documented by a videography team (Alexei Mejouev and Maggie McCullough) in hopes to release a short film along with the album. Ashley Virginia projects the album release later this year. In the meantime, you can catch Ashley Virginia weekly from 3-5 pm at Oden Brewery as the host of “What the Folk Songwriter Sessions”, or visit her website to see the full calendar: www.ashleyvirginiamusic.com/shows !

THE ARF OF READING PEOPLE
I’m a woman who judges potential boyfriends by whether dogs like them. My friends think I’m crazy, but I’m convinced that my dog picks up on who a person really is. Is there any research on whom animals are drawn to? — Muttperson

Dogs have proved useful for sniffing out drug stashes, dead bodies, and IEDs. How great would it be if you could dispatch your German shepherd Tinker Bell into a bar or party to sniff out the human minefields? “Naw...skip this dude. Serious intimacy issues.” People will swear that their dog is a great judge of character — focusing on the, oh, two times he growled at someone they despise but conveniently forgetting all the times he snuggled up to their sociopathic ex. The reality is, research does not support
dogs (or even chimps) having what they’d need to assess a person’s character — a sophisticated cognitive ability humans have called “theory of mind.” Theory of mind describes being able to guess the mental states of others — to infer what they’re thinking or intending. For example, when you see a man across the street get down on one knee in front of a woman, theory of mind leads you to figure he’s about to ask her something — and it probably isn’t, “Could I borrow a pen?” That said, the gutsy little purse Cujo that growls at some Mr. Skeevy probably isn’t doing it out of the blue. Dogs do seem able to read even subtle aspects of human body language — like our tensing up upon approaching somebody we dread talking to — and they may respond in kind. However, dogs’ perception of people and the world is dominated by their exceptionally powerful sense of smell — estimated to be between 10,000 and 100,000 times more powerful than ours, according to anthrozoologist and “Dog Sense” author John W.S. Bradshaw. In other words, though dogs can’t read a person’s mind, they may be able to
smell what’s on it — or rather, the chemical messengers released by what’s on it. For example, doggy cognition researcher Alexandra Horowitz explains in “Inside of a Dog” that adrenaline (triggered when a person’s afraid or angry) “is unscented to us, but not to the sensitive sniffer of the dog.” Additionally, Bradshaw points out that the types of people dogs are socialized with — women, men, men with beards, people wearing different kinds of clothes — make a difference in whom dogs snuggle up to and whom they snarl at. So, no, your dog is not a leg-humping background-checker. But she can help you see something important about men — if you look at how a potential boyfriend treats her: with patience or annoyance. And as I often advise, it’s also important to put some time (and a lot of observation) between thinking a guy is really awesome and seeing whether he actually is. It’s tempting to believe you’ve found everlasting love, just as it’s tempting to believe that your dog is some sort of crystal ball for reading character — and not responding to how some guy just kneaded all the stuff together for homemade liverwurst and then wiped his hands on his pants.
NIGHTLIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

My boyfriend thinks there’s something wrong with me because of how much I sleep. I’ve always needed to sleep a lot (like, nine hours). I’ve been tested for everything, and I’m fine. Do some people just need more sleep? How do I get him off my back? — Duvet-Covered

the good guys
Okay, so you’re the love child of Rip Van Winkle and a log. Studies on identical twins suggest that our “sleep duration” (how long we tend to sleep) is between 31 and 55 percent “heritable” — which is to say factory-installed, driven by our genes. Beyond your boyfriend not being tuned in to the genetics, there’s a little-known feature of our immune system — basically the psychological version of that plexiglass partition in liquor stores in bad neighborhoods — that may be causing him to worry about your sleepathons. In addition to warrior cells being sent out by our immune system to attack bodily invaders, such as viruses, psychologist Mark Schaller’s research suggests we have a psychological warning system — the “behavioral immune system” — to help us avoid being exposed to disease in the first place. This warning system gets triggered by, among other things, atypical behavior — for example, sleeping far more than most people. To get your boyfriend off your case, you might tell him that being adequately rested is actually associated with lower risk of heart disease, obesity, and psychiatric problems. In fact, it’s even associated with less risk of early mortality — despite the things your boyfriend probably yells in bed: “Hey! Hey! You still alive? Should I call 911?” ! GOT A PROBLEM?
