welcome

Welcome to homely Pärnu! P
All the events listed here were chosen because they are free!
We are awaiting scientific proof of our motto – “Each day spent in Pärnu lengthens you life!” You should not let this opportunity go by!
An important and long-awaited added jewel is the renovated Pärnu museum building, which is the newest of its kind in Estonia, and is definitely worth a look. You will see exhibits that prove that people have considered this area to be the best for the past 11,000 years. With your own eyes, you will also see a 14th-century Hanseatic cog (which everyone has talked about but few have seen) and much more.
ärnu represents a comfortable atmosphere and friendly hosts, abundant greenery, 30 kilometres of sandy beach and river banks, unlimited light (especially in the summer!), water and sun. In addition, a lively cultural life, rich taste treats, tens of kilometres of cycling and walking paths. And, of course, spas, shops and a market – everything a person needs for a diverse holiday.
One of our small worries is that the summer is so short. Therefore, you need to start earlier. Already on 1 June, we will be hosting electric cars from the Tallinn-Monte Carlo Rally on Rüütli Square. Three days later, on 4 June, we will celebrate the anniversary of the Estonian flag based on Pärnu’s history. Tõnis Mägi, one of Estonia’s most beloved singers, will perform at the concert.
I am happy that I live in Pärnu. I hope that you feel the same when you visit and spend time with us. With anticipation and eagerness,
After several years, we are happy to again host the Good Food Festival – Grillfest from 8-9 June. I expect that about twenty thousand people will savour this summer’s taste treat. On 21 June – the opening of summer, the “relocation of the capital to Pärnu” and a performance by the Kaunimate Aastate Vennaskond.
T
he highlight of the summer is definitely 23 June, when Pärnu will host the Victory Day military parade. Attended by the President of the Republic, Prime Minister, Speaker of the Riigikogu, diplomatic corps, and, of course, the people with whom the power rests. Pärnu Hanseatic Days will take place from 29 June to 1 July. In July, the largest sailing regatta in Pärnu’s history will take place – the Nordic Youth Sailing Championship. In August, the traditional and extremely popular August Insomnia will be held.

tervetuloa

Tervetuloa kotoiseen Pärnuun! P
Konserttiosuudessa esiintyy Tõnis Mägi, yksi Viron rakastetuimmista laulajista, Usean vuoden tauon jälkeen meillä on taas ilo isännöidä hyvän ruoan festivaalia Hea Toidu Festival - Grillfest 8.–9. kesäkuuta.
T
ämän kesän kohokohta on kiistatta 23. kesäkuuta, jolloin Pärnu isännöi Viron voitonpäivän sotilasparaatia. Paikalla ovat tasavallan presidentti, pääministeri, parlamentin puhemies, diplomaattikunta ja tietysti kansa, korkeimman vallan haltija. 29. kesäkuuta–1. heinäkuuta järjestetään Pärnun hansapäivät. Heinäkuussa Pärnussa järjestetään Viron historian suurin purjehduskilpailu – Pohjoismaiden nuorten mestaruuskilpailut. Elokuussa on perinteikäs ja erittäin suosittu Augustiunetus (elokuun unettomuus).

761-year-old Pärnu People have lived at the mouth of Pärnu River for the past 11,000 years. In 1154, the Arabian explorer Al Idrisi entered the name Bernu as a reference on his map. Pärnu harbour was mentioned for the first time in 1242.
fire was rescued, and it still decorates the Pärnu coat of arms as a symbol today.
We can talk of Pärnu as being a bishopric town from 1251, when Bishop Henricus I consecrated the cathedral on the right bank of the river, or in Old Pärnu, and founded the town of Pärnu (Perona civitas). Pärnu calculates its age from that time, and therefore, in 2012 our city is celebrating its 761 birthday.
On 24 April 2011, Pärnu Day was celebrated for the first time, and at the initiative of the city government it is becoming a nice tradition. The reason that the festivities for the 761-year-old city were organized on Easter is that it was on Easter Sunday in 1265 that the German Order donated the land to the city, granted it trading and fishing rights, and the privilege of receiving one-third of the court revenues. Thereafter, we can speak of Pärnu as a municipality (the bishopric towns lacked these rights). New Pärnu was granted official town rights in 1318.
In 1263, when the pagans attacked and pillaged Old Pärnu, the city residents moved to the left bank of the river, which was protected by the German Order of Knights. The cathedral’s altar crucifix that had survived the

kirkon tulipalossa säilynyt alttariristi, joka koristaa symbolina edelleen Pärnun vaakunaa.
All who are interested can wander through the streets of Pärnu from even the other side of the world. Starting in May 2012, Pärnu like the rest of Estonia can be viewed at map.google.com. You just need to find Pärnu. Enjoy the experience!
761-vuotias Pärnu Pärnujoen suistossa on asunut ihmisiä jo 11 000 vuotta. Vuonna 1154 arabialainen maailmanmatkaaja Al-Idrisi merkitsi kartalleen suistoalueen merkiksi nimen Bernu. Pärnun satama mainittiin ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1242. Pärnusta piispankaupunkina voimme puhua vuodesta 1251 lähtien, jolloin piispa Henricus I vihki joen oikealla rannalla eli Vanhassa-Pärnussa tuomiokirkon ja perusti Pärnun kaupungin (Perona civitas). Siitä hetkestä Pärnu laskee ikänsä eli vuonna 2012 kaupunkimme täyttää jo 761 vuotta. Vuonna 1263, jolloin pakanat hyökkäsivät Vanhaan-Pärnuun ja tekivät siellä ryöstöretkiä, kaupungin asukkaat siirtyivät asumaan joen vasemmalle rannalle, jota puolusti saksalainen ritarikunta. Mukaan otettiin tuomio-
Koska Pärnu kuului Hansaliittoon, täkäläiselle suistoalueelle muodostui merkittävä kauppasatama. Kesällä 2010 järjestettiin Pärnussa 30. kansainväliset hansapäivät. Paikalliset hansapäivät järjestetään Pärnussa joka kesä, tänä vuonna 29. kesäkuuta–1. heinäkuuta. Kiinnostuneet voivat nyt kuljeksia Pärnun kaupungissa myös nousematta tuoliltaan, vaikka asuisivat maailman toisella laidalla. Toukokuusta 2012 lähtien Pärnu, kuten koko muukin Viro, on virtuaalisesti nähtävissä osoitteessa map.google.com. Enää pitää vain etsiä Pärnu sieltä. Kauniita elämyksiä!

tourist information In May 2010, Pärnu Visitors’ Centre was opened in a wing of the historical town hall in Pärnu city centre (Uus St. 4), which is the first regional visitors’ centre in Estonia. The centre provides informational materials about the City and County of Pärnu, provides suggestions for choosing accommodation and places to eat, for what to do on your holiday and how to compile itineraries. Since the Pärnu Visitors’ Centre cooperates closely with other tourist information centres in Estonia, one can also find interesting information about other regions of Estonia. One can buy postcards and souvenirs from the Pärnu Visitors’ Centre as well as tickets for events from the Piletilevi ticket outlet. One can pay in cash or by bank card. During the summer season, from 15 May to 15 September, the visitors’ centre is open seven days a week from 9 am to 6 pm. It often stays open later during large summer events, if there are tourists. From 16 September to 14 May, the Pärnu Visitors’ Centre is open on weekdays from 9 am
to 5 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm. When the centre is closed, tourist information is available from the Pärnu Hotel (Rüütli 44) in the centre of the city. A website has also been opened at www. visitparnu.com, which provides information in Estonian, as well as English, Finnish, Russian and German and partially in Latvian and Swedish.

Niihin kellonaikoihin, jolloin neuvonta on suljettu, saa turismi-informaatiota keskustassa sijaitsevasta Pärnu-hotellista (Rüütli 44).

these buildings contribute to the beauty of Pärnu to this day.
The history of Pärnu as a resort town dates back to 1838 when a bathing establishment reconstructed from an old seaside tavern opened its doors to visitors. 50 years later the town government bought the bathing establishment and hired a bathing inspector who was put in charge of developing a health and vacation resort.
The following period of occupations naturally left its mark on the development of the resort town. At the same time, the Soviet period, which lasted for more than four decades, made Pärnu into a resort that was well known throughout Russia and its client states.
At the initiative of the municipal government and with the coordination of the bathing inspector, Pärnu began adding seaside parks and avenues to its natural long and sandy beach as well as the double pier constructed in 1864, which has become a kind of a symbol for the town as well as a place where lovers have come to exchange their vows of fidelity. The development of Pärnu as a favourite destination for vacationers was given new impetus after the creation of the Republic of Estonia in 1918. The political changes resulted in many new boarding houses and villas, restaurants and cafés being opened in Pärnu. The 1930s were the golden age of Pärnu as a resort town. This is the period during which the beach hotel, the beach café and the bandstand were built next to the sand beach. The mud cure spa was built back in 1927. All of
The restoration of the independence of the Republic of Estonia brought about a new wave of development in Pärnu. During the 21st century, Pärnu has become an international destination for beachgoers as well as tourists who are looking to enjoy the town’s many spas and beauty salons.

shoPPing The liveliest shopping areas in Pärnu are located in the town centre, on Rüütli and Aida streets, as well as near the intersection of Riia Road and Papiniidu Street. Rüütli Street can be considered Pärnu’s historical trading centre. The street is populated by small brand name shops that sell clothing, footwear and other goods. You should also explore the streets that intersect with Rüütli Street, since they too can offer exciting shopping experiences. If you want to take a break from shopping, rest your legs and refresh yourself, as there are many cosy restaurants and cafés on the streets that intersect with Rüütli Street as well as Kuninga Street, which runs parallel to it. The area near the Pärnu Concert Hall between Aida Street, Lai Street, Pikk Street and Hommiku Street is known as the new Pärnu City and it is the location for several large shopping centres: Port Artur 1, Port Artur 2, the Pärnu Centre and the DeLange Commercial Centre. One of the most advanced shopping centres to be opened in Pärnu in recent years is Kaubamajakas (also the town’s largest shopping
centre), located by the road you take when driving to Riga from the city centre, near the intersection of Riia Road and Papiniidu Street. Kaubamajakas features a selection of clothes, sports equipment, food, home electronics, books and many other goods. Several large interior decoration and construction stores are located near Kaubamajakas. Pärnu Centre is the only place in Pärnu where you can find an I.L.U. beauty products store. In addition to offering many well-known and popular cosmetics brands, the I.L.U. store is Pärnu’s only source of Make Up Store products. Pärnu’s shopping centres offer both internationally recognised brands and highquality local merchandise. You can also be pleasantly surprised in small shops. Most stores offer the option of paying with a bank card. Euro only can be used for cash payments. Alcohol is sold in Pärnu and Estonia in general every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

11,000 years of history This May is the first month that the new building of the Pärnu Museum, located at Aida 3, opened its doors to visitors. The museum’s exhibition spans the time period from the Stone Age to modern times and the permanent exposition is titled “11,000 years of history – Experiences from the past”. When you enter Pärnu Museum, you will find yourself facing a Hanse cog from the 14th century, while the glass floor offers you a view of the medieval town wall and the posts of the gate that once witnessed all of the goods and people entering the Hanseatic town from the direction of the New Pärnu port. Exploring the museum’s expositions will allow you to learn about life in the Stone Age, medieval times and the Baroque era, the development of the resort town starting from 170 years ago, Pärnu as the birthplace of the Republic of Estonia, and life in the city during the Soviet occupation. The museum is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Ship traffic Although Pärnu has historically been a sea and port town, its berths are currently used for commercial and fishing purposes primarily, and there is no year-round passenger ship traffic through Pärnu. Due to this, the harbour in the city centre is inactive during the winter. However, some connections do operate in summer. This year, between May and September, a passenger boat line will transport passengers from Pärnu city centre harbour (Kalda 2) to Kihnu Island and back again. The trips take place twice a day from Wednesday to Saturday and once a day on Sundays. There are no trips on Mondays and Tuesdays. A one-way ticket costs €4.50. The trips between Pärnu and Kihnu Island are made by the passenger ferry Liisi, which can also transport cars. A ticket for a passenger car costs €12. The trip takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. You can also take a boat to Kihnu Island from Munalaiu harbour in Pärnu County. In order to get from Pärnu to Munalaiu, you will have to drive through Vana-Pärnu and then head towards Tõstamaa. You will see the sign pointing towards Munalaiu harbour right after the settlement in Pootsi.
According to the schedule in effect from June until September, the passenger ferry will be sailing from Munalaiu to Kihnu and back on all days of the week: three times a day on Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays, twice a day on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and four times a day on Fridays. The first boat of the day will sail from Kihnu at 7:00 a.m. and from Munalaiu at 8:45 a.m. A one-way ticket costs €2.60 and a ticket for a passenger car costs €10.20. The trips between Munalaiu and Kihnu Island are made by the passenger ferry Amalie and the voyage takes approximately an hour. If necessary, Amalie can also be booked for transportation to Ruhnu Island. Munalaiu harbour also has a boat connection to the nearby Manilaiu Island. You can find out more about the ferry lines at the website www.veeteed.com or by calling (+372) 447 4443. In the spring of 2012, construction was completed on the new catamaran passenger boat Runõ, which was ordered by the state and will travel between Pärnu and Ruhnu during the summer. At the time of publication of Pärnu This Week, the exact schedule for the new boat had not yet been announced.

bus service Pärnu has its own city bus lines – a total of over 20 – and the city is covered quite well, although the summer schedules may be interrupted by road repairs. The busses operate from 4 in the morning until almost midnight, but the service early in the morning and late at night is less frequent. The bus departure times can be found at the bus stops. Further information is available on the following websites: www.peatus.ee (in English, Russian and Estonian) and www.bussipark.ee (only in Estonian). Bus tickets can be bought from newspaper kiosks or directly from the bus drivers. Bus tickets in Pärnu city cost 0.64 euros when bought from a kiosk and 1 euro from the bus driver. The tickets are valid for one hour after being stamped by a ticket puncher in the bus. Therefore, you can use one ticket to ride on several buses within one hour. It is possible to buy a 10-day ticket (7.67 euros) or 30-day ticket (14.06 euros). Pre-schoolers and pensioners 70-years or older ride for free. In addition to the city buses, suburban busses also ride around Pärnu. The service is most frequent on the no. 40 route, which runs between Pärnu and Sindi and bus no. 57, which operates between Pärnu and Sauga. County-wide and country-wide buses depart from the bus station at the intersection of Ringi and Pika Sts. in the centre of Pärnu. More information is available at www.peatus.ee. Tickets can be bought from the Pärnu Bus Station at Ringi 3, where the ticket offices are open from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm.
41 illalla liikenne on harvaa.

what to bring bacK from Pärnu In addition to the Mary Magdalene Guild (Uus tänav 5), which was mentioned on the previous page, and Kadri’s Textile Studio, which is located at the same address, many shops in the town centre offer handicraft items and souvenirs that visitors can buy as mementos of Pärnu. There are open air stalls with traders in Rüütli Street throughout the summer. You only have to look around to find beautiful and practical handicrafts or souvenirs. One option is to visit the shop “Suveniir” (Ringi 5), which offers a wide selection of items related to Pärnu and Estonia, traditional folk handicrafts, silver and gold jewellery and applied art. However, you can also find interesting items from antique stores. “Vanavara Antiigiäri”, Pärnu’s oldest antique shop, is located at Karja 26 in the town centre and competes with an antique shop located at Kuninga 32, right across the way from Hotel Victoria. You can find new and exciting goods at Vabrik, a shop located on the first floor of the building at Rüütli 16, Pärnu. It offers an interesting selection of works by Estonian artists and designers.
bicycle and scooter rental Since Pärnu is a comfortably small city, bicycles are a suitable way to get around. You should first ask about rentals at the establishment where you are staying. Scooters can be rented in Pärnu from Heming, which also sells scooters. Information on rental options is available on their website at www.hot.ee/r/rendiroller.

Pärnu yacht club Although sailing was popular in Pärnu in the 19th century, the Pärnu Yacht Club was only established in 1906 and the club became active in May 1907. The Pärnu Yacht Club building, which was renovated in 2010 and now contains a restaurant and a hotel, is located at Lootsi Street 6. If you’re interested, you can inquire with the bar staff at the restaurant regarding yacht rental options. A bronze statue of the famous Estonian captain Kihnu Jõnn was erected in front of the Pärnu Yacht Club building in May 2011. The yacht club marina has a total of 90 slips, 30 of which are designated for guests. The depth of the yacht club harbour is 3 metres and the harbour can accommodate boats up to 16 metres in length. The Pärnu Yacht Club harbour has held the Blue Flag, a symbol of its quality, since 1994. Additional information is available on the Pärnu Yacht Club website www.jahtklubi. ee. Information on catering and housing is available at the following telephone numbers: (+372) 447 1740.
Pärnun PurJehdusseura Vaikka Pärnussa harrastettiin purjehtimista jo 1800-luvulla, perustettiin Pärnun purjehdusseura vasta vuonna 1906, varsinainen toiminta alkoi toukokuussa 1907. Vuonna 2010 uuden ilmeen saanut purjehdusseuran rakennus, jossa toimii ravintola ja hotelli, sijaitsee Pärnussa, osoitteessa Lootsi 6. Kiinnostuneet voivat tiedustella ravintolan henkilökunnalta mahdollisuuksia vuokrata alus huvimatkaa varten. Toukokuussa 2011 pystytettiin purjehdusseuran rakennuksen eteen legendaarisen virolaisen kapteenin Kihnu Jõnnin pronssinen patsas. Purjehdussatamassa on yhteensä 90 paikkaa, joista 30 on tarkoitettu vierailijoille. Purjehdussataman syvyys on 3 metriä ja satama kykenee vastaanottamaan jopa 16 metriä pitkiä aluksia. Pärnun huvivenesatamalla on vuodesta 1994 sataman laatua osoittava Sininen lippu. Tarkempia tietoja saa Pärnun purjehdusseuran kotisivulta www.jahtklubi.ee. Ruokailuja majoituskysymyksissä saa vastauksen puhelimista (+372) 447 1740.
