Welcome to the summer resort of Pärnu!

T

his year, we are looking back to 1838.

That was the year when the first bathing facility was opened in Pärnu. That was when the story of the Pärnu resort began – a story which has been colourful and healthy and brought us recognition and satisfaction. We would not have spas that meet the high standards of Scandinavian and Russian tourists today if it was not for Pärnu’s most well-known mayors Oskar Alexander Brackmann and Oskar Kask, both of whom saw the development of resort facilities as a way to make Pärnu bloom and prosper. And they were right – Pärnu blooms to life every spring!

And why not? After all, Indian elephants are intelligent, strong and admirable and carry the spirit of friendship and cooperation. The Pärnu health resort, the Beach Park, the Beach Lounge, the Mud Treatment Centre, the women’s beach which is rather unique in the entire world, the public beach which is considerably less unique, but very highly recognised since 1925, the beautiful natural surroundings and exquisite culture are magnets attracting both Pärnu residents and visitors.

There are many stories related to Pärnu health resorts and tourism. Some of them are true, but some exaggerated to please the tourists. The logo of our Health Resort Year is – surprise, surprise – an elephant.

Despite the fact that elephants do not live at this latitude and the largest zoo in Pärnu is a Mini Zoo, elephants do have historical meaning in Pärnu.

A health resort dating back 175 years The year 1838 is considered the birth of Pärnu as a health resort, since the first swimming and bathing facility was built by the sea in that year. Pärnu itself is considerably older.

People have been living around the mouth of the Pärnu River for 11,000 years. In 1154, the Arab traveller al-Idrisi marked the area around the mouth of the river on his map as Bernu.

The port of Pärnu was first mentioned in his-

torical records in 1242. The history of Pärnu as an Episcopal town began in 1251, when Bishop Henricus I consecrated the dome church on the right bank of the river, in the area currently known as Old-Pärnu, and founded the City of Pärnu (Perona civitas). In connection with that event, 1251 is considered the year the city of Pärnu was born.

In 1263, when pagans attacked and plundered Pärnu, the townsfolk settled on the left bank of the river, which was protected by the German Teutonic Order. The people salvaged the altar cross from the fire in the dome church and the cross adorns the coat of arms of Pärnu to this day.

The Day of Pärnu was first celebrated on 24 April 2011, and we have now sought to maintain this tradition for three consecutive years.

The festivities of the Day of Pärnu take place at Easter because it was on the Day of Ascension 1265 that the German Order gave the city its land, trading and fishing rights and the privilege to keep a third of the court revenue.

From that date on, we can talk of Pärnu as a local government unit (Episcopal towns did not have such rights).

Uus-Pärnu (New Pärnu) gained official city rights in 1318. As Pärnu belonged to the Hanseatic League, the mouth of Pärnu River be-

general came an important commercial port. The 30th International Hanseatic Days were held in Pärnu in the summer of 2010. However, local Hanseatic Days are held in Pärnu every summer – and this summer is no exception.

As already stated, this year marks the passage of 175 years from the wider recognition of Pärnu as a resort town. While initially, Pärnu was promoted simply as a nice place for bathing in the sun and air, in 1924-1925 the sandy seashore of Pärnu was opened as an official sunbathing and swimming beach. Pärnu beach took on its current appearance, characterised by the Beach Hotel and the Beach House, at the end of the 1930s.

11 000 VUOTTA HISTORIAA: Elämyksiä entisiltä ajoilta

175 vuotta sitten perustettu kylpylä Kylpyläkaupunkina Pärnun historian voidaan katsoa alkavan vuonna 1838, jolloin ensimmäinen kylpylä aloitti toimintansa meren rannalla. Pärnun kaupunki on kuitenkin huomattavasti vanhempi.

Pärnujoen suistossa on ollut asutusta jo 11 000 vuotta. Vuonna 1154 arabialainen maailmanmatkaaja al-Idrisi merkitsi suistoalueen karttaan nimellä Bernu. Pärnun satama mainittiin ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 1242.

Piispankaupunkina Pärnusta voidaan puhua vuodesta 1251 alkaen, jolloin piispa Henricus I vihki käyttöön tuomiokirkon joen oikealla rannalla eli Vanhassa-Pärnussa ja perusti Pärnun kaupungin (Perona civitas). Tämän tapauksen mukaan vuosi 1251 katsotaan myös Pärnun kaupungin perustamisvuodeksi.

Vuonna 1263, jolloin pakanat hyökkäsivät Vanhaan-Pärnuun ja tekivät siellä ryöstöretkiä, kaupungin asukkaat siirtyivät asumaan joen vasemmalle rannalle, jota puolusti saksalainen ritarikunta. Mukaan otettiin tuomiokirkon tulipalossa säilynyt alttariristi, joka koristaa symbolina edelleen Pärnun vaakunaa.

24. huhtikuuta 2011 vietettiin ensimmäistä kertaa Pärnun päivää, ja nyt jo kolmatta kertaa peräkkäin siitä on muodostumassa kaunis perinne. Pärnun kaupungin juhlallisuuksien siirtäminen pääsiäispyhiksi johtuu siitä, että juuri pääsiäisenä 1265 saksalainen ritarikunta lahjoitti kaupungille maan ja antoi sille kaupankäynti ja kalastusoikeudet sekä oikeuden saada itselleen kolmannes tuomioistuimen tuloista. Siitä alkaen Pärnusta voi puhua itsehallinnollisena yksikkönä. (Piispankaupungeilla ei ollut tällaisia oikeuksia.)

Viralliset kaupunkioikeudet Uusi-Pärnu sai vuonna 1318. Koska Pärnu kuului Hansaliittoon, sen suistoalueelle muodostui merkittävä kauppasatama. Kesällä 2010 Pärnussa jär-

Kuten jo mainittiin, tänä vuonna tulee kuluneeksi 175 vuotta siitä, kun Pärnu tuli tietoisuuteen kylpyläkaupunkina.

Jo alusta alkaen Pärnusta haluttiin luoda mielikuva hienona paikkana auringosta ja ilmasta nauttimiseen, mutta vuosina 1924–1925 Pärnussa otettiin käyttöön meren hiekkaranta virallisena uimarantana. Nykyisen ulkoasunsa, jota ilmentävät Rannahotell ja Rannahoone, Pärnun ranta sai vuoden 1930 lopussa.

Tourist information You can find a good overview of events taking place in the city of Pärnu and Pärnu County all around the year as well as information about recreational and holiday facilities and tourist routes at www.visitparnu.com. Besides Estonian, the site also offers information in English, Finnish and Russian and partly in German, Swedish and Latvian.

Pärnu Visitor’s Centre has been established in the centre of Pärnu, in one wing of the historical Town Hall (Uus Street 4). When the centre was opened in May 2010, it was the first regional visitor’s centre in Estonia.

The Visitor’s Centre offers information and materials about Pärnu City and Pärnu County, recommendations for choosing accommodation and dining places, ideas for holiday activities and travel routes.

As the Pärnu Visitor’s Centre closely cooperates with other tourist information centres in Estonia, it is also able to provide interesting information about other regions of Estonia and the tourist attractions there.

You can purchase postcards and souvenirs at the Pärnu Visitor’s Centre as well as tickets to events via Piletilevi. Both cash and card payments are accepted. Those who are in Pärnu for the first time should definitely drop by the Visitor’s Centre. During summer, from 15 May to 15 September, the Visitor’s Centre is open seven days a week from 09:00 to 18:00 and even longer during major summer events – as long as there are tourists looking for information.

From 16 September to 14 May the Pärnu Visitor’s Centre is open on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00.

The Visitor’s Centre is closed on Sundays during autumn and winter.

When the Visitor’s Centre is closed, you can always find tourist information and material about Pärnu County from Hotel Pärnu right in the centre of the city (Rüütli 44).

Public Internet access points Pärnu has three public Internet access points.

1) In Pärnu Central Library (Akadeemia 3): there is a public PC on the first floor and the entire building has free WiFi Internet.

2) In Pärnu Tourist Information Centre (Uus 4): you can use a computer for free for the first 15 minutes.

3) In the Museum of New Art (Esplanaadi 10): you can also print and make copies there.

Free WiFi coverage is offered by most Pärnu restaurants and hotels, as well as by the largest shopping centres. For instance, in the city centre: Teatrikohvik, Jazz Café, Victoria hotel, etc. You can also use WiFi on Rüütli Square, sitting on a bench in the park located close to the intersection of Rüütli and Vee streets, as well as on the beach promenade.

Matkailuneuvonta Hyvän yleiskatsauksen Pärnussa ja Pärnumaalla ympäri vuoden järjestettävistä tapahtumista, lomailumahdollisuuksista ja matkailureiteistä saa verkkosivustolta www.visitparnu.com. Sieltä löytyy tietoa viron kielen lisäksi englanniksi, suomeksi ja venäjäksi sekä osittain myös saksaksi, ruotsiksi ja latviaksi.

Toukokuussa 2010 avattiin Pärnun keskustassa, historiallisen raatihuoneen siipirakennuksessa (Uus-katu 4), Pärnun vierailukeskus, joka oli ylipäätään ensimmäinen alueellinen vierailukeskus koko Virossa.

Vierailukeskus tarjoaa esitteitä Pärnusta ja Pärnumaasta sekä antaa vinkkejä majoitusja ruokapaikan valintaan ja ideoita lomapäivien ohjelmaa ja matkareittien suunnittelua varten. Pärnun vierailukeskus tekee tiivistä yhteistyötä Viron muiden matkailuneuvontakeskusten kanssa ja sieltä saa kiinnostavaa tietoa myös muista Viron alueista ja niiden turistimagneeteista.

Pärnun vierailukeskuksesta voi ostaa postikortteja ja matkamuistoja sekä lippupalvelun välityksellä myös lippuja eri tapahtumiin. Maksaa voi sekä käteisellä että pankkikortilla. Varsinkin Pärnussa ensimmäistä kertaa vierailevien kannattaa käydä vierailukeskuksessa.

Vierailukeskus on kesäkaudella, 15. toukokuuta – 15. syyskuuta, avoinna seitsemänä päivänä viikossa klo 9–18. Kesän suurtapahtumien aikaan usein kauemminkin, niin kauan kuin matkailijoita riittää.

16. syyskuuta – 14. toukokuuta Pärnun vierailukeskus on avoinna arkisin klo 9–17 ja lauantaisin klo 10–14. Syystalvella vierailukeskus on suljettu sunnuntaisin.

Tallinn Gate and Vallikäär Moat The 17-century Tallinn Gate and the Vallikäär Moat right next to it allow us to imagine Pärnu as an old stronghold. There is a model of the stronghold by the gate, giving an overview of the layout of the city and the fortifications more than three hundred years ago. The gate was named after the Swedish king Carl Gustav until 1720. It got its current name – Tallinn Gate – from the fact that this is where

the Tallinn postal road began in the 18th century.

Vallikäär is known as a popular summertime concert venue. The reconstruction works carried out a few years ago with support from the European Union have made Vallikäär a pleasant walking area. The Vallikäär Moat is particularly impressive at night, when the entire green area is lit. At the end of the moat towards the Tallinn Gate stands the highest fountain in Estonia. When you walk towards Pärnu River, you can see an underground passage leading through the rampart, which was uncovered in the course of the reconstruction works. The other end of the moat leads to a pedestrian bridge and further on to the yacht harbour. Today, the moat is also used as a boat harbour, where even yachts can be moored thanks to the swing bridge.

Tallinnan portti ja Vallikäär 1600 luvulta peräisin oleva Tallinnan portti ja sen lähellä oleva Vallikäär (vallihaudan penger) auttavat luomaan Pärnusta mielikuvan muinaisena linnoituskaupunkina. Tallinnan portin luona on linnoituskaupungin pienoismalli, josta näkee, millainen kaupunki ja linnoitukset olivat yli kolmesataa vuotta sitten. Vuoteen 1720 asti portti oli nimetty Ruotsin kuninkaan Kaarle Kustaan mukaan. Nykyisen nimensä Tallinnan portti sai siitä, että sieltä alkoi Tallinnaan vienyt postitie 1700 luvulla.

Pärnun Vallikäär on tunnettu erinomaisista konserteistaan, joita järjestetään kesäisin. Muutama vuosi sitten vallihaudan penger muutettiin Euroopan unionin rahoittamin uudistustöin viehättäväksi kävelyretkikohteeksi. Erityisen elämyksellinen käynti vallihaudan penkereellä on pimeään aikaan, jolloin koko kunnostettu puistoalue on valaistu. Vallikäärin Tallinnan portin puoleisessa päässä on suihkulähde, jonka vesisuihku on Viron korkein. Pärnujoen puolella kävellessä näkee uudistustöiden yhteydessä auki kaivetun maanalaisen tunnelin, joka vie vallihaudan alitse. Vallihaudan toinen pää vie jalankulkusillalle ja edelleen purjehdussatamaan. Myös vallihauta toimii nyt venesatamana, johon voivat kääntösillan ansiosta laskea purjeveneetkin.

Maarja-Magdaleena Guild Maarja-Magdaleena Guild in the centre of Pärnu at 5 Uus Street stands for excellence in applied art, design and handicraft, beaming with the warm touch of artisans. In the Guild you can buy and order the work of Pärnu’s acknowledged artisans and craftsmen and see for yourself how their work is made.

You can also try your own hand by attending workshops conducted by the craftsmen; for

example, modelling clay, weaving carpets, painting silk shawls or pillows, glass melting, making silver and fantasy jewellery, souvenirs from leather or wood, and even crafting various dolls.

The workshops are available for a small fee, but it is worth the price to experience first hand the craftsman-apprentice system. Make sure you allocate time to participate in the workshops.

Maarja-Magdaleena Guild was founded in 2007, but its name is borrowed from the oldest association of craftsmen in Pärnu. Despite its short history, Maarja-Magdaleena Guild has developed into a valued centre of specialist know-how and hobby education.

In addition to their own building, the Guild also organises events in summer in the historical Steiner garden right next door.

Maria Magdalenan kilta Pärnun keskustassa osoitteessa Uus tn 5 toimiva Maria Magdalenan kilta on käsityöläisyhdistys, joka vaalii taideteollisuutta ja suurella sydämellä tehtyä käsityötä. Killasta voi ostaa ja tilata tunnettujen pärnulaisten mestarien töitä sekä todistaa omin silmin niiden valmistumista.

Pyynnöstä työpajoissa voi mestarien ohjauksessa koettaa omia kädentaitojaan, esimerkiksi saviastioiden muovailua, maton kutomista, silkkihuivin tai tyynyliinan maalausta, lasinsulatusta sekä hopea- ja fantasiakorujen, nahasta tai puusta muistoesineiden ja myös esimerkiksi nukkien valmistusta.

Maria Magdalenan kilta on perustettu vasta vuonna 2007, mutta sen nimi on peräisin vanhimmalta tiedossa olevalta Pärnussa toimineelta käsityöläisyhdistykseltä. Lyhyestä toiminta ajastaan huolimatta Maria Magdalenan killasta on muodostunut merkittävä käsityöalojen osaamis ja harrastuskeskus.

Sisätilojensa lisäksi kilta järjestää kesäisin tapahtumia myös viereisellä historiallisessa Steinerin puistossa.

Pärnu Mole The first mole was built at the mouth of Pärnu River on orders from the Russian Empress Catherine the Great in 1769, in order to prevent sand from building up in shipping channels and to promote the development of Pärnu cargo port. The first mole was made of wooden poles, and the remains of it can still be seen next to the stone mole even now when the water level is low.

The current stone moles were built in 1863–1864. The rocks were transported from the shores of Häädemeeste and Kihnu, and while the moles were being built, thorough dredging works were also carried out. The mole starting from Old Pärnu is 2 kilometres long. The mole starting from the city centre, a couple of hundred metres past the Yacht Club, is 2.5 kilometres long – this mole, extending the left bank of Pärnu River, has become a symbol of Pärnu City. Lovers customarily go out to the end of the mole to pledge eternal love. In good weather, a walk on the mole is always an enjoyable experience, while in rainy weather access to the mole may be difficult.

You should definitely be careful during periods of high water, as sometimes the mole becomes partly or even entirely submerged.

aallonmurtaja Jo vuonna 1769 rakennettiin Venäjän keisarinna Katariina II:n määräyksestä Pärnujoen suuhun ensimmäinen aallonmurtaja, jotta hiekkaa ei pääsisi muodostumaan laivareitille ja näin edistettäisiin Pärnun kauppasataman kehittymistä. Ensimmäinen aallonmurtaja oli rakennettu hirsistä, ja sen jäänteitä voi laskuveden aikaan yhä nähdä kivisen aallonmurtajan kupeessa.

Nykyiset kiviset aallonmurtajat rakennettiin vuosina 1863–1864. Niissä käytetyt kivet ovat peräisin Häädemeesten ja Kihnun rannoilta.

Kun aallonmurtajia rakennettiin, samalla ruopattiin satamaa. Aallonmurtaja, jonka alkupää on Vanhassa-Pärnussa, on 2 kilometrin pituinen. Aallonmurtaja, jonka alkupää on keskustassa ja jolle pääsee kävelemällä Pärnun purjehdusseurasta muutama sata metriä eteenpäin, on 2,5 kilometrin pituinen. Nimenomaan tästä Pärnujoen vasenta rantaa jatkavasta aallonmurtajasta on muodostunut eräänlainen Pärnun kaupungin symboli. Pärnu Town Hall Pärnu Town Hall, with its surrounding buildings, forms a small city block, the oldest building being built in 1797 originally as a merchant’s residence. In 1806, the Russian tsar Alexander I stayed in this house during his visit to Pärnu. The building started to function as the town hall in 1839. In 1911, an extension to the Town Hall was completed, which has been a meeting place for Pärnu City Council for more than a hundred years.

Besides its function as a seat of power, Pärnu Town Hall is also known as a centre for cultural events. For decades concerts have been held in its hall, which has marvellous acoustics. Allegedly, the magnificent acoustics were discovered by the world-famous violinist David Oistrahh, who gave his first concert there in 1971. Since summer 2005, open-air concerts have taken place in the courtyard of the

Town Hall. In autumn 2010, Pärnu City Gallery acquired its new home in the Town Hall for organising art exhibitions and promoting art life in Pärnu.

Diagonally across the intersection of Uus and Nikolai streets from the Town Hall, you can see Pärnu Citizen’s House, which is also worth visiting. Expositions there talk about the political history of Pärnu and important figures in the city’s history.

Vuoden 2010 syksyllä raatihuoneesta löysi uuden kotinsa myös Pärnun kaupungin taidegalleria taidenäyttelyilleen ja Pärnun taide-elämän edistämiseksi.

Kun raatihuoneelta lähtee viistosti kohti Uus ja Nikolai katujen kulmaa, löytyy Pärnun kaupunkilaisen talo, jossa myös kannattaa mahdollisuuksien mukaan käydä. Siellä järjestettävät näyttelyt kertovat Pärnun itsehallinnon historiasta ja kaupunkiin liittyvistä tärkeimmistä historiallisista henkilöistä.

Pärnu Museum A year ago, in May 2012, Pärnu Museum opened its new building to visitors in Aida Street. The building is new for the museum, but it was actually built in the 19th century and was then used as a barn. The updated museum offers its guests both traditional and interactive solutions to help them traverse 11,000 years of Estonian history.

Pärnu Museum was founded by a Society of Lovers of Antiquities, a community established by townspeople of Baltic German origin who were history enthusiasts. On 3 November 1896, they decided to open the collection, which had been gathered both through donations and purchases, to a wider audience. The present building at Aida Street is the fifth home for the museum, which has been active for more than one hundred years.

Pärnu Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday 11–19. The Museum is closed on Mondays.

Pärnun museo Vuosi sitten toukokuussa 2012 Pärnun museo avasi uuden rakennuksensa ovet vierailijoille Aida‑kadulla. Tosin tilat ovat uudet vain museon osalta; talo itse on rakennettu jo 1800‑luvulla vilja‑aitaksi. Uudistunut Pärnun museo tarjoaa vierailijoille mahdollisuuden tutustua sekä perinteisin tavoin että interaktiivisin ratkaisuin 11 000 vuotta vanhaan Viron historiaan.

Perustan Pärnun museolle loi baltiansaksalaisten historiasta kiinnostuneiden kaupunkilaist-

21 en perustama Pärnu Muinasuurimise Selts (Pärnun esihistorian tutkimusseura), joka avasi lahjoituksin ja omin hankinnoin kootun kokoelman yleisön nähtäville 3. marraskuuta 1896. Yli sadan vuoden ajan toiminut Pärnun museo on viidensissä tiloissaan nykyisessä Aida‑kadun rakennuksessa.

Pärnu is quite well covered with municipal bus routes – all in all, there are over 20 routes.

Buses travel from 4:00 am until almost midnight. However, bus traffic in the early and late hours is quite light. This summer night buses will also be introduced – bus No 14 will travel until 2 o’clock at night.

The departure times of the buses can be found at bus stops. General information can be found at the websites www.peatus.ee (in English, Russian and Estonian) and www.bussipark. ee (only in Estonian).

Bus tickets can be obtained from newsagents or directly from the bus driver. Bus tickets for Pärnu city routes cost 0.64 euro cents when purchased from a newsagent and 1 euro from the bus driver. The ticket is valid for one hour after it has been punched on the bus. Therefore, it is possible to travel on several buses within an hour using one ticket.

It is possible to buy a day ticket (2 euros), 10day ticket (7.67 euros) or 30-day ticket (14.06 euros). For pre-schoolers and people over 70 years of age, bus transport is free of charge.

In addition to city routes there are also shuttle services in Pärnu. The most frequent of these is bus No 40 travelling between Pärnu and Sindi and bus No 57 between Pärnu and Sauga (ticket price at a newsagent is 0.51 euro cents, from the bus driver 0.64 euro cents).

Ahvenen kalastus Pärnunlahdella Ahvenen kalastuskausi Pärnunlahdella alkaa tavallisesti heinäkuussa ja se kestää keväällä jään sulamiseen asti. Jäättömänä aikana kalastukseen tarvitaan moottorivene. Koska Pärnunlahti on suhteellisen rajallinen vesialue, niin ei tarvita välttämättä erityistä avomerialustaa. Aallokko ei ole kovin korkeaa, koska Pärnunlahti on suhteellisen matala. Joten 4–5 metriä pitkä moottorivene on täysin riittävä.

Pyyntivälineiksi sopivat mainiosti virveleistä viritetyt pohjaonget, joista käytetään Pärnunlahdella viroksi nimitystä ”lohistaja” (laahaaja). Syöttinä Pärnunlahdella käytetään usein kastematoja. Kalastus tapahtuu myötätuuleen ajelehtivasta veneestä. Syötillä ja muutaman metrin pituisella siimalla varustettu onki lasketaan pohjaan. Kalan tarttumisen syöttiin voi

havaita värähtelevästä vavan päästä. Tällöin on oltava valmis kelaamaan siima veneeseen.

Parhaat avoveden pyyntipaikat ovat Pärnun suunnasta katsottuna laivareittien oikealla puolella. Hyviä kalastuspaikkoja ovat myös Uulun ja Tahkurannan rannikkoalueet.

Veneen laskeminen veteen on Pärnulahdella ongelmallista. Kunnollisia yleisiä veneenlaskupaikkoja ei ole. Tässä ovat avuksi kalastajien pikkusatamat. Jos omaa venettä ei ole, tällöin voi vuokrata veneen. Jos haluaa mennä vesille suuremmalla porukalla, voi vuokrata vesikulkuneuvon ja kapteenin.

Kalastuspaikan tunnistaa siitä, että siellä on jo joukko veneitä. Tavallisesti tällainen joukkokalastus on hyvin kannattavaa – ahvenet liikkuvat parvessa. Parhaat saaliit on saatu jopa marraskuun lopussa.

Ferry traffic Pärnu is a historic maritime and port city, but today the local ports mostly operate as cargo and fishing harbours. There is no yearround passenger traffic going through Pärnu. Therefore, in winter the ports located in the centre of Pärnu are only used by the icebreaker that provides services for passing cargo ships.

This summer two passenger lines are also open. They make it possible to travel direct from Pärnu city centre (Kalda 2) to Kihnu and Ruhnu islands. The traffic, however, is extremely seldom.

The passenger ferry Liisi sailing between Kihnu and Pärnu makes two trips a day between Wednesday and Saturday and one trip on Sunday. There are no trips on Monday or Tuesday. A one-way ticket costs 4.50 EUR. There is an additional fee of 1.60 EUR for bicycles. Liisi is also able to take cars on board.

The carriage fee for a car is 12 EUR. The trip takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The high-speed catamaran Runõ sails between Pärnu and Ruhnu, the trip takes 3 hours and 10 minutes. The catamaran leaves Pärnu twice a week – on Mondays and Fridays.

The vessel returns to Pärnu on Fridays and Sundays. The catamaran has enough space for 60 passengers. Adult ticket price is 20 EUR. Ruhnu is 96 kilometres from Pärnu. You can also get to Kihnu from the Munalaid port located in Pärnumaa. To get from Pärnu to Munalaid, drive along the Vana-Pärnu road and then head to Tõstamaa.

The most frequent passenger vessel traffic between Kihnu and Munalaid is on Fridays and Sundays (5 trips per day). There are 4 trips on Saturdays. On other days traffic is less frequent. A one-way adult ticket costs 2.60 EUR. Bicycles cost 1 EUR and cars cost 10.20 EUR. The trip from Munalaid to Kihnu is 1 hour. Pärnumaa

Pärnu County is one of the fifteen Estonian counties. The area of Pärnu County is nearly 4,807 square kilometres and according to the latest census the population of the county was 82,598. That means an average of 17.2 people per square kilometre.

By area, Pärnu County is the largest county, covering a little more than 11 per cent of the entire area of Estonia. It has many naturally picturesque places. The population density of Pärnu County is, however, far behind Harju County, which has 127.6 people per square kilometre. The latter is largely due to Tallinn, which is the capital of Estonia.

By and large, it can be said that about a half of the people in Pärnu County live in the city of Pärnu and the rest live in rural areas. Pärnu County is divided into 20 local governments: there are two cities – Pärnu and Sindi – the town of Vändra and 17 rural municipalities.

Pinta alaltaan Pärnumaa on Viron suurin maakunta, joka käsittää hieman yli 11 % koko Viron pinta alasta. Näin ollen Pärnumaalla on paljon luonnonkauniita paikkoja. Väestötiheydeltään Pärnumaa jää kuitenkin kauas Harjumaasta, jossa on 127,6 asukasta neliökilometriä kohden. Tämä on paljolti Tallinnan ansiota, joka on Viron pääkaupunki ja myös Harjumaan hallintokeskus.

Valgerand Beach Just a few kilometres from Pärnu lies the Valgerand Beach with its sandy shores, which has been considered the most beautiful beach on Pärnu Bay. A lit promenade leads from the car park to the beach through a forest grove. The beach has a viewing tower, a children’s playground, pedalo and sailing boat hire. There is also an adventure park at Valgerand Beach where you can try your skills and have exciting experiences.

Right next to Valgerand Beach and Villa Andropoff Resort Centre there is a full scale golf course with 18 holes, which opened in summer 2005. There is also a practicing course for those who want to make their first aquaintance with golf. It is possible to hire the equipment on site.

Kihnu Island

Kihnun saari

Kihnu Island is 7 kilometres long and up to 3.3 kilometres wide. It is located 41 kilometres away from Pärnu and is among the most peculiar islands in Estonia. It is also unique due to its preserved historical folk and cultural traditions and the Kihnu dialect that is used there to the present day.

7 kilometriä pitkä ja 3,3 kilometriä leveä Kihnun saari, joka sijaitsee Pärnusta 41 kilometrin päässä, on eräs omaperäisimmistä paikoista koko Virossa. Sen ainutlaatuisuus on näihin päiviin asti säilyneiden historiallisten kansan ja kulttuuriperinteiden ja yhä edelleen puhuttavan Kihnun murteen ansiota.

Kihnu along with its 56 surrounding uninhabited islands is an important nesting place for birds. Kihnu strait between the island and the mainland is a bird preservation area of European importance. Sangelaid area to the north-west of Kihnu is a favourite resting place in the Baltic Sea for grey and ringed seals.

Kihnu ja sitä ympäröivät 56 asumatonta luotoa ovat lintujen pesimäaluetta. Saaren ja mantereen erottava Kihnun salmi onkin tunnustettu koko Euroopassa tärkeäksi lintujen kokoontumispaikaksi. Kihnusta luoteessa sijaitsevat Sangelaidujen luodot (myös Kihnun luodot) ovat Itämeressä elävien harmaahylkeiden ja norppien suosimia levähdyspaikkoja.

When on Kihnu you should visit the church, the cemetery, the museum and the lighthouse constructed in 1864. This summer, the lighthouse is once again open to visitors after many years. The easiest way to get around Kihnu is on a bicycle.

Kihnussa vieraillessaan kannattaa ehdottomasti käydä kirkossa, hautausmaalla, museossa ja vuonna 1864 rakennetussa majakassa, joka on vuosikausien jälkeen tästä kesästä alkaen jälleen avoinna vierailijoille. Mielekkäintä Kihnussa on liikkua pyöräillen.

In winter you can reach Kihnu by air or by driving on the frozen sea (if the ice is thick enough). During the ice-free period, Kihnu is connected to the mainland by a ferry link. The trip to Kihnu starting from Pärnu city centre port lasts two and a half hours. A shorter route to Kihnu is from Munalaid port in Tõstamaa parish (about one hour). Vessel traffic from both Pärnu and Munalaid is relatively infrequent, and so it is recommended to look up departures online and book tickets where necessary: www.veeteed.com.

Matka kestää noin tunnin. Koska laivaliikenne sekä Pärnusta että Munalaiusta on suhteellisen harvaa, kannattaa kellonajat tarkistaa etukäteen ja tarvittaessa myös varata liput. Tolkuse marsh A few dozen kilometres from Pärnu on the way to Riga, about six kilometres from Häädemeeste village, there is a left turn to Tolkuse marsh. The Rannametsa-Tolkuse nature trail starts right next to the roadside car park, where you can leave your car. Important information is available on the information board.

The Rannametsa dunes are popular among locals and visitors. Walking along the 2.2-kilometer trail is interesting due to information signs along the way that tell of the local plants and points of interest. The circular trail leads through pine forest on the dunes and continues along a boardwalk to Tolkuse marsh.

Near the trail you will see the highest viewing tower in Estonia (18 meters), built on the Tornimägi dune. The topmost platform of the tower is 50 meters above sea level. In clear

Polun varrella olevan Viron korkeimman hiekkakinoksen Tornimäen harjalle on rakennettu 18 metriä korkea näköalatorni. Tornin korkeimman näköalatasanteen korkeus on 50 metriä merenpinnasta ja sieltä voi kirkkaalla ilmalla nähdä jopa 50 kilometrin päähän ja Kihnun saareen saakka. Pitkospuut kulkevat myös rahkasuon suurimman silmäkkeen ohi, jossa rohkeimmat voivat kastautua.

Kabli Beach Besides Pärnu Beach, only Kabli Beach has been assigned the status of an official beach in Pärnu County. Kabli Beach is located half an hour’s drive from Pärnu towards Riga. With its shallow warm water, Kabli Beach is a favourite recreational location for families with children. Right next to the lifeguard tower and the beach with its walkway winding between the beach and the adjacent meadow, one can find lovely picnic spots, children’s playgrounds and a summer cafe.

A few hundred metres from the beach stands the Kabli Bird Station, which has been studying the migration of birds since 1969. In autumn, the station sets up a huge trap net in order to ring birds. At the Bird Station, visitors can view information about the migration of birds and the activities of ornithologists.

An exciting 1.8 km study trail leads from the Bird Station to Kabli Nature Centre. The trail features information boards, several observation towers for watching birds and the natural surroundings, and the world of nesting boxes.

41 Kabli also offers cultural entertainment with its Sunset Festival. The events of this year’s festival will take place from 29 June to 4 August. Further information about the events is published on an on-going basis.

Kablin ranta Pärnumaalla on Pärnun rannan lisäksi vielä toinen virallinen uimaranta – Kablin ranta, joka sijaitsee Pärnusta Riikaan päin noin puolen tunnin ajomatkan päässä. Koska Kablin ranta on matala ja vesi lämmintä, se on suosittu lomanviettopaikka lapsiperheiden keskuudessa. Hengenpelastustornin ympäristössä sekä rantahiekalla ja ruohikolla kiemurtelevalla rantatiellä on mukavia eväsretki- ja lasten leikkipaikkoja sekä kesäkahvila.

Rannasta vain muutaman sadan metrin päässä on Kablin lintuasema, jossa on tutkittu lintujen muuttoa jo vuodesta 1969 alkaen. Syksyisin siellä voi nähdä myös jättisuuren 17 metriä korkean pyydyksen, jonka avulla lintuja rengastetaan. Lintuasemalla on mahdollista tutustua sekä lintujen muuttoon että lintutieteilijöiden toimintaan.

Lintuasemalta vie 1,8 kilometrin pituinen jännittävä luontopolku Kablin luontokeskukseen.

Luontopolun varrella on infotauluja, useita torneja lintujen ja luonnon tarkkailuun sekä linnunpönttö-alue.

Auringonlaskufestivaaleillaan Kabli tarjoaa myös kulttuurielämyksiä. Tämän vuoden festivaalin tapahtumat järjestetään 29. kesäkuuta ja 4. elokuuta välisenä aikana, ja jos haluaa ottaa niihin osaa, kannattaa seurata tiedotusta.

Soomaa The Soomaa National Park is partly located in Pärnu County and partly in Viljandi County. The park has been operating since 1993, but the first bog conservation areas were established there in 1957. Although Soomaa is best known for its spring floods, when floodwaters rise by up to a metre a day, three to four days in a row, the National Park has been established primarily for protecting the rich local vegetation.

The Soomaa National Park has counted 539 species of vascular plants, 200 species of mosses, 119 species of lichens and 360 species of mushrooms. In addition to plants, the species list at Soomaa includes 183 species of birds, 44 species of mammals and 66 species of butterflies.

The territory of the National Park is open to everyone, offering diverse options for recre-

ational activities and hiking with nature trails and camping sites. Information and advice on exploring Soomaa can be obtained from the Nature Centre, which is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00.

In order to allow people to explore the natural environment of Soomaa, approximately ten study trails have been established, of which several are boardwalks. Before starting your hiking trip, it is always worth studying the hiker’s guide.

Tõstamaa Manor Tõstamaa Manor is one of the most beautiful manors in Pärnu County. The history of the manor is very colourful, just like its last owner, Baron Steal von Holstein (1876–1937), who was a renowned professor of the Sanskrit and Tibetan languages and worked as the director of the India Institute of Harvard in Peking.

The manor house has been used as a school house since 1921, but in the summer, from 12 June to 26 August it is open to visitors from 12:00 to 18:00. The manor is closed on Mondays and on national holidays.

The manor house boasts particularly grandiose wall and ceiling paintings, main entrance and chimney hall under a large mantle chim-

43 ney. There is a museum in the lobby and basement of the manor house. The manor park is under heritage and nature protection and boasts a large oak with a crown diameter of 23 metres.

A number of Estonian feature films have been shot at Tõstamaa Manor and in recent years the main hall of the manor house has become a popular venue for theatre performances.

The adjacent old stable buildings offer accommodation in the summer.

Tõstamaan kartano Tõstamaan kartano on eräs Pärnumaan kauneimmista. Kartanon historia on värikäs, kuten sen viimeisimmän omistajan paroni Stael von Holsteinin (1876–1937), joka oli kuuluisa sanskritin ja tiibetin kielen professori ja Harvardin yliopiston Intian instituutin johtaja Pekingissä.

Kartanorakennus on ollut vuodesta 1921 käytössä kouluna, mutta kesäisin, 12. kesäkuuta ja 26. elokuuta välisenä aikana, se on avoinna vierailijoille klo 12–18. Maanantaisin ja kansallisina pyhäpäivinä kartano on suljettu.

Erityisen upeat ovat kartanon seinä‑ ja kattomaalaukset, paraatiportaat sekä manttelisavupiipun alla oleva huone eli savupiipun sali. Kartanon aula ja kellarikerros toimii museona. Muinaismuistojen ja luonnonsuojelun alaisena olevan kartanonpuiston kruunaa tammi, jonka latva on läpimitaltaan 23 metriä.

Tõstamaan kartanossa on kuvattu useita virolaisia elokuvia, ja viime kesinä kartanorakennuksen sali on toiminut myös mainiona teatterinäyttämönä. Pihapiirissä olevassa vanhassa tallissa on kesäisin myös majoitusta.

Tori horses and Tori Hell Tori Stud farm (Tori Hobusekasvandus) was established in 1855 upon the initiative of the Livonian gentry. In their letter to the Russian Emperor, the manor owners reasoned the establishment of a stud farm because the local Estonian horse breed was in danger of extinction. The action to rescue the Estonian horse breed led to the creation of the local Tori breed in 1886. The Tori horse was achieved by cross-breeding the Estonian horse and the Norfolk-Roadster stallion and has been later improved by using Postier Breton and Hannover stallions.

Tori Stud has had many owners over the years, but the history of the farm has been uninterrupted for more than 150 years.

While in Tori, be sure to visit the museum in the old manor granary (open on workdays) as well as the Memorial Church to Estonian soldiers, which is also known as a cosy concert venue.

By the Tori Bridge you can see a beautiful sandstone outcrop. The outcrop is nearly half a kilometre long and, in places, more than ten metres high and can be climbed by a spiral staircase. Unfortunately, the large cave called

the Tori Hell, which once led deep into the ground, has now collapsed, but it still does not fail to inspire awe.

Silloiset kartanonomistajat mainitsivat kirjeessään Venäjän keisarille hevossiittolan perustamisen perusteeksi sen, että paikallinen eestinhevonen oli uhanalainen. Eestinhevosen pelastustoimet johtivat kuitenkin siihen, että vuodesta 1886 lähtien voidaan puhua jopa Torin omasta hevosrodusta, joka on kehitetty eestinhevosen ja norfolkinhevosen risteytyksestä ja jota on myöhemmin paranneltu edelleen käyttämällä bretonin‑ ja hannoverinhevosiin kuuluvia oriita.

Torin hevossiittolan omistajat ovat aikojen kuluessa vaihtuneet, mutta hevoskasvatuksen yli 150 vuoden pituinen historia ei ole katkennut.

Torissa ollessaan kannattaa käydä vanhaan kartanon aittaan avatussa museossa, joka tosin on avoinna ainoastaan arkipäivisin, ja Viron sotilaiden muistokirkossa, joka tunnetaan myös viihtyisänä konserttipaikkana.

Kurgja Farm Museum The Kurgja Farm Museum in the Vändra municipality in Pärnu County offers visitors a chance to imagine how people used to live on a prosperous Estonian farm in the second half of the 19th century. The Kurgja farm was established by one of the key figures in the Estonian national awakening, Carl Robert Jakobson (1841–1882), on the basis of whose designs all the buildings on the farm were constructed.

The farm has operated as a museum since 1948, and the exhibition in the main house provides an overview of Jakobson’s life and achievements. The museum is special due to the fact that it is still actively engaged in cattle breeding and land cultivation. City people can therefore take delight in seeing Estonian country bred cows, white-headed sheep, Estonian horses, hens and cockerels and turkeys – not to even mention the picturesque natural surroundings, which Jakobson once described: “I have rarely seen places as beautiful as Kurgja.”

The Farm Museum is a suitable place for holding conferences and gatherings. In the summer, the Museum organises Theme Days dedicated to sheep, horses, handicraft, land

Kurgjan maaseutumuseo sopii konferenssien ja kokousten järjestämiseen. Audru Racing Track The most modern racing track in Northern Europe was opened in April this year right outside Pärnu. The track is intended for motorcycles, cars and formula-1 class races.

There are four tracks of different shape and length, the longest one 3.2 kilometres.

Races have been held on the Audru Racing Track since the early 1990s, but the former conditions cannot be compared to the today’s track, which was completed with the help of financial support from the European Union.

In addition to organising official competitions and providing training opportunities for professional drivers, the track offers everyone a chance to come and enjoy the racing experience with their own car or motorcycle.

There is a fee, but 20 euros for half an hour

or 30 euros for an hour is well worth the experience. Naturally, that option is available only when the track is not hosting events.

The racing track also offers the possibility to race in rental sports cars, but that is considerably more expensive. The official track car of the Audru Racing Track is the Toyota GT86 sports car. For more information visit www. auto24ring.ee.

Audrun moottorirata Aivan Pärnun kupeeseen avattiin tämän vuoden huhtikuussa juhlallisin menoin koko Pohjois Euroopan uudenaikaisin moottorirata, joka on tarkoitettu sekä moottoripyöräilyyn, ralliautoiluun että cartingiin. Moottoriradalla on neljä eripituista ja -muotoista rataa, joista pisin on 3,2 kilometriä.

Romantic Coastline The Romantic Coastline does not mean one certain path but rather a route through Pärnumaa, which leads the wanderer along the almost 250 km long Estonian coastline, from among the juniper bushes at Varbla to the sandy beaches of Kabli and Treiman near the Latvian border.

Romanttinen rantatie Romanttinen rantatie ei ole mikään yksi tietty tie, vaan joukko pitkin Pärnumaata kulkevia teitä, jotka vievät retkeilijän lähes 250 kilometrin pituisen matkan Varblan katajikoilta Kablin ja Treimanin hiekkarannoille Latvian rajalle.

Romanttisella rantatiellä voi kuljeksia pitkin paratiisirantaa, vaeltaa läpi idyllisten kalastajakylien ja maalaismaisemien, seikkailla salaperäisissä ja muinaisissa paikoissa, tehdä aurinkoisia ajomatkoja pitkin maalauksellista rannikkoa ja nauttia auringonlaskuista.
