WELCOME
Welcome to the summer capital! S ummer and the sun. The sea and beautiful sandy beaches. Green parks and promenades. A lot of exciting things to do for both children and adults. Exciting events and interesting eateries... This is how hundreds of thousands of guests describe Pärnu, the summer capital of Estonia. People say that everyone MUST visit Pärnu at least once during the summer! In 2016, Pärnu hosted nearly 350,000 tourists who in total spent almost 900,000 days here. Pärnu has borne the title of a summer capital for only twenty years, but has offered health, recreation and holiday services for nearly two centuries. Pärnu was “discovered” internationally thanks to its good location by the sea – its fine sandy beach and shallow southward-facing bay, which warms up rapidly, are ideal for a beach holiday. The historic therapy resort was already internationally renowned 180 years ago. But this old Hanseatic town with 766 years of colourful history offers a lot to discover outside the cosy spas and the proud Blue Flag beach! Pärnu captivates its visitors with historical sites, beautiful wooden architecture and buzzing summertime city life. The diverse health trails and walks along the river in Pärnu offer convenient activities in the fresh air, while private outdoor seating areas serve as excellent spots for picnics. Away from the beach, over on Pärnu River, various boating, canoeing, surfing and sailing activities await you. In Pärnu, every visitor finds their own favourite place to be and things to do, according to taste and age. Visiting Pärnu with the entire family for a family holiday weekend is very
popular. Pärnu beach has for a long time now meant much more than just lying on the sand and paddling in the water – it has a number of different attractions – a renovated beach promenade, a new area for beach sports, and the world class Beach Stadium which opened just last year. Even if the weather is not suitable for beach activities, there are so many ways you can have a great time – Pärnu has the largest water park in Estonia, as well as an adventure park, golf courses, and Lotte Village. You can try your hand at handicrafts, visit museums, exhibitions and concerts or engage in sports. Children can go on sailing and boating trips, have fun in the playgrounds and theme parks and do a lot of other exciting things. Pärnu also offers exciting cafes and restaurants so you can have a break and enjoy good food. In addition to a beach holiday, parents can emotionally recharge at the various concerts or nightclubs. Pärnu hosts many festivals every summer, something for every taste. Pärnu also hosts many different sports events this year – at the new Beach Stadium as well as on the streets and in the parks. You can easily find information about the events via your computer or smartphone. So pack your travel bag and take your whole family to the Nordic resort of Pärnu! The summer capital awaits you, full of summertime fun.

WELCOME
GETTING AROUND THE CITY Pärnu is not a very big city, so simply walking or biking is the most pleasant way of getting around, especially in the centre and the seaside area. In the summer season, bicycle rental points can be found in the old town as well as next to hotels and spas. Pärnu has plenty of bikeways which are nice to ride on. Still, if you want to spare your legs and see a bit more of the city, you can take the city bus. Bus tickets can be purchased from newspaper kiosks and bus drivers. Single tickets cost EUR 0.64 when buying from a kiosk and EUR 1 from the driver. When you have validated your ticket on the bus, you can travel on it for one hour, during which you can ride anywhere in the city on any bus. However, the bus ticket system in Pärnu will
change from 1 July with the introduction of magnetic cards. At first, the new system may cause some confusion among both tourists and townsfolk, but the kiosks and Pärnu bus station are always there to provide up-to-date information. The Pärnu bus station is a true building site this year, as it will receive a complete overhaul. The long distance buses temporarily depart from Ringi and Rüütli streets. We recommend going to the bus station at least 15 minutes before the departure of the bus to make sure you you’re on your bus on time. You can always ask for advice and assistance at the bus station building. Pärnu train station is located in the Papiniidu district next to “Liivi tee” street. To get to the train station, you can take bus No 3 and go to the “Raudteejaam” bus stop, which is behind the K-Rauta and Espak stores.

Pärnussa on runsaasti pyöräteitä, joilla on miellyttävä ajaa. Pärnun bussiasema on tänä vuonna aikamoi-

Pärnun rautatieasema sijaitsee Papiniidun alueella Liivi tee -kadun varrella. Rautatieasemalle pääsee bussilla nro 3, pysäkki nimeltään “Raudteejaam” sijaitsee K-Raudan ja Espak kaupan takana.

The Reformation initiated by Martin Luther 500 years ago has had an immense impact on understanding education and developing music in Estonia. Services in the Estonian language established by the Reformation gave rise to written Estonian, and the Lutheran choral tradition evolved into singing customs that united Estonians and over the centuries grew into our tradition of song festivals. Therefore, the foundations of the cultural and spiritual identity of Estonians have been closely linked to the renewals and reverberations of the Reformation.

HISTORY
HISTORY The Pärnu County history over 11,000 years is presented in an experiential format through the modern interactive permanent exhibition 11,000 Years of History – Experiences from Times Long Past at Pärnu Museum, which moved into its new granary building in 2012. Pärnu County became populated after the Ice Age (c. 116,000–11,600 years ago) by the inhabitants of a summer settlement in Pulli Vil-
lage, whose rare bone and antler tools and hunting and fishing instruments are on display in the Stone Age room at Pärnu Museum. A star attraction from that era is the oldest sculpture of a human figure in the Baltics, made of an elk antler over 8,000 years ago. The Middle Ages exhibit portrays the era of the Crusades and the origins of Pärnu city. The town of Perona, together with the Cathedral and Dome School, was established in 1251 by Heinrich, the Bishop of Ösel Wiek. When the Samogitians looted the seat of the Bishop in 1263, the residents moved the town to the opposite bank of the river. In 1265, the new town was given its first privileges. The Teutonic Order, which governed Pärnu, joined the Hansaetic League in 1282, and already back then Pärnu was probably the only major sea port in Livonia. A wreck of a cog, a merchant ship, dating back to the 14th century is a prized item in the collection, along with an authentic 14 century river gate that negotiated the entire Hansaetic trade of Pärnu. The Russian Livonian War broke out in 1558, and being a strategically important stronghold, Pärnu kept changing hands between the warring sides. Pärnu surrendered to Swedish troops in August 1617 and soon became a fortress town. These developments are depicted in detail by Pärnu Museum’s Baroque exhibit, made up of rare artefacts originating from the Pärnu fortress town garrison, former city lords, trade and Pärnu’s university life (1699–1710). An important phase, which is also the most emphasised section in the permanent exhibition at Pärnu Museum and its subsidiary Koidula Museum, is the national awakening and the birth of an independent Estonian state. Estonians assumed a more active role in cultural and social life in the second half of the 19th century. The need to provide education in the Estonian language was emphasised and the first issue of Perno Postimees, a newspaper edited by Johann Voldemar Jannsen, was published in 1857. Koidula Museum, lo-
25
HISTORY cated at 37 Jannseni Street, tells us the story of Jannsen’s editorial office and the life of Jannsen’s poet daughter Lydia Koidula, and also displays the interior of a mid 19th century schoolhouse. The final section of the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the second half of the 20th century and features an experiential recollection of the beginning of the Soviet occupation and an exhibit dealing with deportations and the partisan Forest Brothers of Pärnu. The exhibit culminates with a symbol of the restoration of Estonian independence – a track cycling gold medal won by Erika Salumäe at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
sa. Yhtenä aikakauden merkittävimmistä näyttelyesineistä voi pitää Itämeren alueen vanhinta ihmishahmoa, joka on valmistettu hirvensarvesta yli 8000 vuotta sitten. Keskiajan näyttely esittelee ristiretkien aikakautta ja Pärnun kaupungin syntyä. Peronan kaupungin tuomiokirkkoineen ja tuomiokirkon kouluineen perusti vuonna 1251 Saare-Läänen piispa Henrik. Kun liettualainen samogitialaisten heimo tuli vuonna 1263 ryöstöretkelle piispankaupunkiin, sen asukkaat siirsivät kaupungin toiselle puolelle jokea. Vuonna 1265 uusi kaupunki sai ensimmäiset oikeutensa.
Pärnumaan 11 000 vuotta pitkästä historiasta tekee elämyksellisen yhteenvedon vuonna 2012 uuteen aittarakennukseen muuttanut Pärnun museon nykyaikainen ja interaktiivinen perusnäyttely ”11 000 vuotta historiaa – elämyksiä vanhoilta ajoilta”.
Vuodesta 1282 lähtien Pärnua hallinnut saksalainen ritarikunta kuului Hansaliittoon ja todennäköisesti Pärnu oli jo tuolloin ainoa varteenotettava merisatama Liivinmaalla. Museossa on kunniapaikalla 1300-luvulta peräisin olevan koggilaivan hylky.
ARCHITECTURE Many of Pärnu’s hotels are symbols of the city, as they incorporate both exciting architecture and local history. Rannahotell, completed in 1937 and designed by Pärnu city architect Olev Siinmaa, is a highpoint in Estonian functionalism and a symbol of the Pärnu resort. This year, the hotel underwent a complete renovation in all of its public premises and rooms, and the new interiors are inspired by the 1930s and warm beach tones. Pärnu Rannahotell will be 80 years old this year, and the festive celebrations will take place on 17 June. Over the summer, the hotel will also hold various concerts, family events and exhibitions. In cooperation with Pärnu Museum, an exhibition of tableware from 1937 till today will be on view in the hotel lounge until 17 June. Villa Ammende, the most luxurious hotel and fine dining restaurant in Pärnu, is located in an idyllic garden park with ancient oak trees. The story of Ammende began when one of Pärnu’s most affluent grand merchants Hermann Leopold Ammende, whose ancestors had relocated to Estonia from Germany in the 18th century, was looking for a suitable build-
27
HISTORY ing for the wedding of his beloved daughter Ellen. In the absence of an acceptable option, he decided to commission a luxurious design from St. Petersburg architects Mieritz&Gerassimov and to build a villa for his daughter’s wedding that would serve as a subsequent summer house for the family. The Art Nouveau design was prepared quickly and approved by the Pärnu city architect in 1904. This was immediately followed by preparing the plot and beginning construction. Ammende Villa was completed in 1905 and the finished building turned out to be much more opulent than the initial design.
ten.

HEALTH
HEALTH THROUGH WATER Pärnu is famous in Estonia and the world for its spas, water centres and health resorts. There are truly plenty of these in Pärnu, and each year one spa hotel or another undergoes a transformation, adding saunas, pools and other facilities to make sure that when customers leave they are much healthier than upon arrival. Pärnu spas are located in the seaside district and generally consist of a hotel and a spa section. Services may vary, but each spa hotel contains various saunas, pools and facilities for health improvement by means of treatments or activities. Using the services provided by the hotel where you are staying is the most convenient, but why not try out the services of as many different spas as possible during your holiday. You will have to replace the bathrobe with something more appropriate for moving from one spa to another, but the experience will certainly be worth this minor inconvenience.

All Pärnu spas are modern and comfortable; they feature a fresh look and represent different eras in Pärnu health resort architecture. Pärnu can justly be proud of the treatment opportunities it provides. They started out with fresh air, parks, the sea and even therapeutic mud, but the health resort was built by people expanding whatever nature had to offer. Spas and rehabilitation centres are open all year round, so it is worth having a look at them in the summer in order to return in the winter, for instance, to hold a conference with your colleagues there, which will logically be followed by going to the sauna together. Water gives health!
City residents nicknamed the trail to honour Jüri Jaanson, a famous rower born in Pärnu, who is now a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament).
HEALTH THROUGH MOVEMENT Pärnu is a city suitable for all kinds of physical activity. The seaside park has fitness trails; the long coastline is perfect for jogging or walking, and if you love water, you can go swimming in the sea or river. In recent years, the light traffic road around Pärnu River, commonly referred to as “Jaan-
Jaanson’s trail runs along the river to connect the Pärnu Old Bridge in the city centre and the New Bridge in the Papiniidu district. This way, you can start walking, jogging or biking at any point, go along the river bank and across two bridges and come back to where you started. The part of the light traffic road in the city centre features interesting design solutions, and there are numerous benches along the way. Jaanson’s trail is keenly used for recreational sports or leisurely walks with children or dogs. The fitness trail can be pretty overcrowded at rush hour, so pay attention when riding a bicycle or rollerblading. Apart from Pärnu parks, Jaanson’s trail is one of the most favoured outdoor leisure locations in the summer city. Leaving it at the Old Bridge, you will easily reach roads to the seaside to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful nature.

BEAUTY Viime vuosien suosituimmaksi liikuntapaikaksi on noussut Pärnujoen ympäristössä kulkeva kevyen liikenteen väylä, jota kutsutaan kansan suussa Jaansonin poluksi (Jaansoni rada). Pärnulaiset ottivat tämän nimen käyttöön kunnianosoituksena pärnulaiselle soutajalle Jüri Jaansonille, joka on nykyisin virolainen kansanedustaja. Jaansonin polku yhdistää joen rantaa pitkin keskustan Vanhan sillan Papiniidun kaupunginosassa sijaitsevaan Uuteen siltaan. Pärnun puistojen ohessa on Jaansonin polku kesäisin Pärnun suosituimpia ulkoilmakohteita. Jaansonin polulta pääsee Vanhan sillan luota melko helposti meren rantaan, ja sieltäkin löytyy raikasta ilmaa ja kaunis luon-

to. Terveys tulee liikunnasta!
TERVEYTTÄ KIIPEILYSTÄ Liikuitpa pyörällä, autolla tai moottoripyörällä, odottaa Pärnusta hieman Haapsaluun päin ajettaessa Audrun kunnassa paikka nimeltään Valgerand. Siellä sijaitsevassa seikkailupuistossa pääset toteuttamaan haaveesi kokeilla Tarzanin elämää.

BEAUTY Valgerannan metsikössä on puihin rakennettu reittejä, joilla on selviydyttävä eritasoisista esteistä. Valgerannan seikkailupuistossa on yhteensä kuusi seikkailureittiä. 2–7-vuotiaille lapsille on erillinen lastenpuisto, jossa on kaksi reittiä. 115–140 cm:n pituiset seikkailijat voivat kokeilla taitojaan kolmella helpoimmalla reitillä. Kaikkien reittien läpäisyyn kuluu kolmisen tuntia, ryhmien kannattaa varata 3,5 tuntia. Toisenlaisen elämyksen tarjoaa kiipeily yöllä, sillä otsalampun valossa puut näyttävät aivan erilaisilta, ja katsojienkin on jännittävää seurata, kuinka pienet valonlähteet pilkottavat pimeiden puiden välistä.

korkeudella. Valgerannan 1,7 km pitkä frisbeegolfrata kulkee läpi kauniin mäntymetsän ja sitä voivat kaikki käyttää maksutta. Tarvittavia kiekkoja voi vuokrata seikkailupuistosta. Seikkailupuistossa on myös uusi köysihyppy. Köysihyppy auttaa testaamaan omia tai ystäväsi rajoja – jännitystä riittää. Hypätään erikoislaitteen avulla 10 metrin korkeudelta. Terveys tulee kiipeilystä!
TERVEYTTÄ HISTORIASTA Rauhallisin tapa viettää aikaansa hieman terveellisemmin on kävellä ympäriinsä Pärnussa ja tutustua nähtävyyksiin. Eräs Pärnun symboleista on aallonmurtaja, johon tutustuminen ja jonka päähän saakka kävely on itse asiassa hyvinkin urheilullinen haaste. Terveys tulee historiasta!

SHOPPING
OLD TOWN The Old Town, which basically means Rüütli street as well as Hospidali, Pühavaimu, Hommiku and the other streets crossing it, is the historically formed shopping district of Pärnu. Old but beautifully restored buildings are home to small shops selling clothes, jewellery, souvenirs, drinks, spices and a lot more. In the Old Town, shops alternate with cafés, so the area of Rüütli street is particularly nice for walking and having a good time, and of course, shopping. The street is one of the most important arteries for Pärnu in the summer, when everyone reaches it eventually to go on to the beach, theatre or concert hall or to the new city centre for a more substantial shopping quest. Pärnu’s new city centre is located at the intersection of Aida, Ringi and Põhja streets and is marked by Marten’s square. It is home to the
Port Artur 1, Port Artur 2 and Pärnu Keskus shopping centres.
PAPINIIDU The Papiniidu shopping area with its largest venue, the Kaubamajakas shopping centre, is located a short distance from the city centre, and you can get there along Riga road in the direction of Riga, the capital of Latvia. We do not recommend walking there, but, luckily, there are free buses from the city centre that will bring you directly to Kaubamajakas. Naturally, you can also get there using the city buses or by taxi.
We offer a wide range of tights, underwear, nightwear, bathing suits
Pärnun uusi ydinkeskusta sijaitsee Aida-, Ringi- ja Põhja-katujen risteämispaikassa, jossa on Martensin aukio. Siellä sijaitsevat ostoskeskukset Port Artur 1, Port Artur 2 ja Pärnu Keskus.
PAPINIIDU Papiniidun ostosalue, jonka merkittävin kohde on kauppakeskus Kaubamajakas, sijaitsee hieman etäämmällä keskustasta ja sinne pääsee jatkamalla Riia maantee -valtatieta Latvian pääkaupungin Riian suuntaan.
Tarjoamme laajan valikoiman sukkahousuja, alusvaatteita, yöasuja, ranta-asuja!

FOOD
WHERE TO EAT?
The greatest dining experience undoubtedly awaits you in Pärnu’s restaurants, where food is a bit more expensive than in pubs, but the price is justified considering the highly impressive service and interiors. The standards of Pärnu restaurants are rising every year, and what certainly contributes to this is Pärnu Restaurant Week held every spring. If you appreciate delicious food, we definitely recommend visiting Pärnu again in spring during this period. The Café Week is held in autumn, but its “fruit” can also be enjoyed in the summer. One can safely claim that the standards of Pärnu restaurants are no lower than those of the best in Estonia or Europe, and as far as the food in pubs and cafés goes, sometimes it can beat what you can get at a restaurant. In Pärnu, food is generally served until late evening, so you can just enter any café, pub

Pärnu is famous for its numerous cafés, restaurants and pubs. There are plenty in each city district, and all of them are distinctive and provide a range of dining experiences. You can have a decent meal at a café or a pub, so there is no reason to fear that, for example, there will be no food to accompany your beer or coffee.
OU KNOW THA T DY I D
or restaurant you see first without having to look for a fast-food outlet although Pärnu has plenty of these. Favourite dishes among local pub-goers include a decent slice of pork with sauerkraut on the side, but a cheese schnitzel is equally popular. Keeping in mind that the best eating places in Pärnu are a short walk away from one another, the city is perfect for culinary exploration tours, during which you can have a meal at one place and take a walk to another one only to realize that you are hungry and could eat something again.
MINNE MENNÄ SYÖMÄÄN? Pärnu tunnetaan lukuisista kahviloistaan, ravintoloistaan ja pubeistaan. Niitä löytyy kai-
47

! TSTRFOYODMIN E TOWN BE
Nikolai Lehtla It is a nice and quiet, refined place to spend your time. Food and drinks are delicious and affordable for tsars, presidents, prime ministers and, of course, simple citizens. People say that once in this place was an arbor of Tsar Nicholas II, who enjoyed sipping beer here on hot days. Nicholas II was a great guy, and we respect him much, not because he was a tsar, but rather because he was able to enjoy great food and drinks. But enough rambling for now! Come and see for yourself!

FUN
NIGHTLIFE
YÖELÄMÄ
Pärnu has fewer nightclubs than pubs, but it is still enough for anyone to find a place to their liking. Most nightclubs are located in the city centre, near Rüütli street, where you will find the Mirage, Kassa, Vaarikas, Aptek and Sugar. Club Sunset opens on the beach for the summer. Each summer, another new club where you can enjoy the music and dance suddenly emerges.
The flamboyance of Pärnu nightlife cannot be described in words; you have to see it. It combines small-town atmosphere with bigcity ambition. Anyway, even if you are fast asleep, do not get angry with those who stay up and party through the night. What you should keep in mind though is that the “nighttime quiet” rule in the summer in Pärnu applies between midnight and six in the morning.

ACCOMMODATION
WHERE TO STAY? Pärnu has over 300 accommodation options, ranging from large luxurious hotels to smaller cosier hostels and guesthouses, camping grounds and home accommodation. In order to find suitable accommodation for the summer, it would be wise to book well in advance, but even if you leave looking for accommodation to the last minute, do not despair, as there are often cancellations and it is quite possible to stumble on a vacancy. If staying in central Pärnu and near the beach, keep in mind that the summer atmosphere may disturb your sleep somewhat, but don’t worry about this too much. If you prefer complete quiet, aim at the suburbs, where large modern hotels give way to hostels in quiet residential areas. The larger hotels in the city centre and near the beach all boast waterparks, conference rooms and very fine restaurants. For a lighter snack or a more substantial meal, head, for example, to Piparmünt at Kurgo Villa Hotel, Villa Wesset’s restaurant, Noot at the Estonia Resort Hotel & Spa or to the restaurant at Strand SPA & Conference Hotel. Regardless of whether you have chosen to stay at the Aleksandri Guesthouse or not, be sure to visit the Aleksandri Pub – a pub with friendly service, friendly patrons and friendly prices.
Situated in the heart of Pärnu and not far from the beach. We offer cozy and romantic rooms. Or visit us for just a nice drink.

YACHT CLUB Pärnu Yacht Club was launched by a handful of Imperial Russian Navy officers, led by the Pärnu Harbour Master Dmitri Luhmanov, who also drafted the first statutes of the Pärnu Sailing Club. On 21 June 1906, Julius Dicks, Anatoli Palibin, Dmitri Luhmanov, Artur Fröhling and Christjan Meybaum signed a petition requesting that the Maritime Ministry approve the establishment of Pärnu Sailing Club based on the prepared statutes. Therefore, 21 June 1906 is considered the club’s birthday and the listed gentlemen its founding members. Although the current Pärnu Yacht Club guesthouse is not very large, quite a lot of people stay at the yacht club, many of them on board the yachts that have brought them to Pärnu. The yacht club itself, with its sailboats, guesthouse and restaurant is one of the loveliest riverside spots in Pärnu. It is a favourite among visitors as well as locals. It often hosts concerts with live music and the frequent sailing regattas have a calming effect on the nerves.
PURSISEURA Pärnun pursiseuran perustamisen panivat vireille keisarillisen Venäjän meriupseerit johdossaan satamapäällikkö Dmitri Luhmanov, joka laati myös Pärnun pursiseuran ensim-
mäisten sääntöjen luonnoksen. 21. kesäkuuta 1906 allekirjoittivat Julius Dicks, Anatoli Palibin, Dmitri Luhmanov, Artur Fröhling ja Christjan Meybaum anomuksen, jolla meriministeriötä pyydettiin hyväksymään Pärnun pursiseuran perustaminen laadittujen sääntöjen mukaisesti. 21. kesäkuuta 1906 on täten katsottava seuran perustamisajankohdaksi ja mainitut herrat seuran perustajajäseniksi. Vaikka Pärnun pursiseuran nykyinen vierastalo ei olekaan kovin suuri, yöpyy paikalla suuri määrä ihmisiä, koska osa viettää yönsä veneissä, joilla he ovat saapuneet Pärnuun. Pärnujoen rannalla sijaitsevat pursiseuran tilat purjeveneineen, vierastaloineen ja ravintoloineen kuuluvat Pärnun kaupungin viihtyisimpiin ajanviettopaikkoihin. Siellä viihtyvät sekä matkailijat että paikalliset asukkaat. Usein järjestetään elävän musiikin konsertteja, ja purjehduskilpailut auttavat purkamaan jännitteitä.

PÄRNU COUNTY
PÄRNU COUNTY Pärnu County is the largest county in Estonia, with an area of 4,807 km², population of 82,349 and population density of 17.1 people/km². Considering that half of the county’s population live in Pärnu city, these figures indicate that a large part of Pärnu County is poor in terms of people, but rich in terms of nature. Pärnu County has an abundance of forests, long white beaches and opportunities for hiking, bird watching or lazing in the sun. While Pärnu County has a wide range of accommodation options, consider spending at least one night in the open air and in the wild. For that purpose, the State Forest Management Centre (RMK) has created a recreation area located in Pärnu County on the territories of the municipalities of Saarde, Tahkuranna, Häädemeeste, Audru, Koonga and Varbla. The area accommodates both beach and forest getaways. A coastal vacation invites you to enjoy the beauty of the setting sun, listen to the sounds of nature, build sand castles and relish just being. Coastal meadows with their varied plant and bird life are a treat for nature lovers. The recreation area has two hiking trails, four nature trails, six rest areas, two rental cabins, three forest huts and four campsites. As the RMK recreation area is both wild and

civilised, it is a good fit for urban people in need of a short nature getaway. More advanced hikers can also expect more serious wilderness, but these are more inland away from the sea, as the entire coastline is peppered with the houses of fishermen, who are still actively fishing along the coast of Pärnu County. Coastal meadows and small fishing villages are of course scenic, but if you want to run into a bear, also featured on the coat of arms of Pärnu County, head towards Vändra.
KIHNU Visiting Pärnu County would be incomplete without a trip to the island of Kihnu. The unique ancient traditions that are partly still observed and the way of life on Kihnu are included on the UNESCO cultural heritage list. Modern day Kihnu is a unique amalgam of the pre-

For example, the women of Kihnu routinely wear traditional skirts (kört) that they weave themselves; small children know the traditional dances and songs, and the Kihnu dialect is taught at school. The attention of UNESCO inspired the launch of the Kihnu Cultural Space Foundation, responsible for the development and preservation of the culture of Kihnu. Kihnu, accessible by ship from Pärnu and Munalaid, forms part of the Romantic Coastline route of Pärnu County. For more information, visit www.rannatee.ee.
PÄRNUMAA Pärnumaa on Viron suurin maakunta, jonka pinta-ala on 4807 km², asukkaita on 82 349 ja asukastiheys 17,1 as./km².

CITY
FOUR WALKING TOURS IN PÄRNU Walking tour 1. Very slow.
Begin your walk at Rüütli Square, near Pärnu Hotel. Rest your feet by the fountain and head west along Rüütli Street. The main street of Pärnu is full of shops and cafés. Rest your feet at a café. Continue walking until you reach Jakobson Park. Rest your feet there. Cross Akadeemia Street and you will reach Vallikäär, a former defence structure surrounded by a fragment of the moat. Climb the stairs to the top of the mound, sit down on a bench and rest your feet.
Walking tour 2. Very fast.
Begin on Akadeemia Street near Pärnu Central Library. Walk fast towards the south until you reach Munamäe Park, which used to be part of the defence structure but is now a playground and sports field for children and teenagers. Take a sharp turn towards the west and walk along Lõuna Street until the Tallinn Gate. After having checked out Tallinn Gate, continue rushing west along Ringi Street, until you reach the river. Take a brisk turn to the right, walk along the riverside past the Yacht Club and under the Central Bridge until you reach a rest area by the river. Please relax now, you are on holiday after all!
Walking tour 3. Very long.
Start off at Endla Theatre and head east along Pikk Street. The word pikk means literally “long”. Walk towards Riga, leaving the Riga Road towards the river onto Suur Jõe Street. This is one of Pärnu’s most exciting streets, which used to accommodate both a hospital and a prison. Nowadays it is a lovely renovated wooden suburb. Walk until the city border, flanked by pine trees. Turn towards the south and begin walking west, first along Merimetsa Street and then Mai Street. Keep going straight and you will reach downtown Pärnu, where you can replace your worn out shoes with new ones.
Walking tour 4.
Stick Pärnu This Week into your bag along with maps, pick a random direction and start walking slowly. Do not be afraid of crossing the river – check out even the smallest streets. Feel free and discover the city of Pärnu. If you feel like it, pick up the pace, slowing down again when you feel the need. This is the best way to get to know the city.
