There is always something new in Pärnu!

his year, the Republic of Estonia celebrates its 100th anniversary and that makes me particularly proud to be a citizen of Pärnu. Our city has played an important part in the birth of our country, as Estonia was first declared independent in Pärnu on 23 February 1918. Therefore, upon arriving at the new Pärnu Bus Station, you should definitely visit the renovated Rüütli Square nearby. That is where Theatre Endla stood one hundred years ago, and from the balcony of the theatre building the Manifesto of Independence was read out by Hugo Kuusner, a delegate of the Estonian National Council. From there, you should walk along Aia Street towards the Kuninga Street Basic School. Along the way, information boards will tell you when the formation of the Estonian national defence forces began, who drew up the Manifesto of Independence, and many other interesting facts. In front of the school, we have unveiled a monument to the creators of the Republic of Estonia – the members of the Salvation Committee, Konstantin Päts, Jüri Vilms and Konstantin Konik, and the reader of the Manifesto of Independence, Hugo Kuusner. Having taken in the history, it would be time to head for the beach, which was again awarded a Blue Flag this year, certifying its superb water quality. The beach with its fine white sand offers plenty of activities for both children and adults, while the nearby parks and nature trails offer refreshing shade and excitement. If you get bored sunbathing, you could walk along the beach promenade to the nature trail, try various water sports, climb at the two adRomek

venture parks or, why not, go and play a round of golf on one of the best golf courses in Europe. At one of the most modern racing tracks in Europe, you can take a racing car through thrilling bends and turns. You should definitely take your children to Lotte Village, which offers exciting activities for the whole day. Children would most probably also enjoy the Nature House, various water parks, sailing and boating trips, the Mini Zoo, the Escape Room, handicraft workshops, etc. Adults can find cultural entertainment at numerous concerts and exhibitions, various museums, a modern cinema, a stately concert hall and an excellent theatre. As befitting the Summer Capital of Estonia, the summer event calendar is full and also includes several world-famous festivals and concerts which bring many visitors to the city. Should it be rainy, you can find comfort in the seven spas for which Pärnu is renowned. This year, it will be 180 years from the summer in which Pärnu was awarded the status of a resort town. In addition to spas, Pärnu is also well known for its many exciting dining venues. The city has numerous cosy cafes and restaurants which set up tables outside for the summer. Discover new flavours while enjoying the Estonian summer and beautiful sunsets. Every year, Pärnu has something new for you to discover, experience and enjoy. Pärnu is evolving and growing in a quite literal sense! Pärnu city and its citizens will surprise you every time you decide to spend your holiday in the Summer Capital of Estonia. PÄRNU VISITOR CENTRE Pärnu Visitor Centre (4 Uus street) is located in the centre of Pärnu in the historical Town Hall building, which was once the site of Pärnu city government, but is now the home of the tourist information office and Pärnu City Gallery. The Town Hall is a classical-style building initially constructed as the house of a merchant by the name of Harder. Pärnu Visitor Centre provides maps for navigating the area and other introductory materials, recommendations on accommodation and dining as well as ideas for spending free days or putting together travel routes. The staff always know what is happening in Pärnu and Pärnu County – all year round. In cooperation with the other tourist information offices in Estonia, they can tell you about the most beautiful and exciting locations of the country, so if your exploration of Estonia starts Pärnu, the Visitor Centre is the place to look for ideas on where to go next. Pärnu Visitor Centre also sells postcards and regional souvenirs, and tickets for events can be purchased through the Piletilevi system. Cash and card payments are accepted. PÄRNUN VIERAILUKESKUS Pärnun vierailukeskus sijaitsee Pärnun keskustassa (Uus 4), historiallisessa raatihuoneessa, jossa toimi aikoinaan Pärnun kaupunginhallitus, mutta nykyisin matkailuneuvonta ja Pärnun kaupungingalleria. Raatihuone rakennettiin alun perin kauppias Harderin asunnoksi, ja se edustaa klassista tyyliä. Pärnun vierailukeskuksesta saa karttoja ja esitteitä, neuvoja majoitus- ja ruokailupaikkojen valintaan, ideoita lomapäivien viettoon ja matkareittien laatimiseen. Keskuksen työntekijät tietävät vuoden ympäri, mitä jännittävää Pärnussa ja koko ympäröivässä maakunnassa tapahtuu. PUBLIC TRANSPORT Pärnu is not a very big city and therefore it is more enjoyable to walk or bike around, especially in the centre of the city and the beach area. During the summer you can find bicycle rentals in the old town and at spas and hotels. There are many cycle paths in Pärnu and cycling on them is enjoyable. However, if you prefer to limit your walking and see a little more of the city, public transport is also a good option. Buying an electronic transport card from R-Kiosk is the most convenient way, and this can then be charged with additional travel value. An electronic transport card purchased in Pärnu can also be used in Tallinn. When entering a bus, you simply need to validate (“beep”) your card. After validating the card, it is valid for one hour and costs 0.64 cents. If you do not have an electronic bus card you can buy a ticket

from the bus driver. In that case the ticket costs 1 euro and is only valid on that bus. Pärnu Coach Station, where local and international bus lines run, was finished this spring and is located at Pikk 13. Pärnu Train Station is located by Liivi Road and you can get there from the centre of the city using bus number 3, bus stop “Raudteejaam” is located behind the stores K-Rauta and Espak.

PARKING Parking is free in Pärnu in the centre of the city area on weekdays after 18.00 and before 8.00 and on Sundays and Saturdays; in the Marketplace area on weekdays after 14.00 and before 8.00 and on the weekends; in the beach area during the summer every day after 18.00 and before 10.00. Parking areas are also free on Tammsaare puiestee, near the bridge in the centre of the city and on Lai

If the starting time is fixed using a parking clock or on a written notice displayed in the front windscreen then parking is free of charge: for 1 hour in the central town area; for 3 hours parking in front of Endla theatre and for 30 minutes in the beach area and in a discount parking area. A written note or a parking clock must be placed on the windscreen or on the dashboard and must be easily visible. Paid parking areas are marked accordingly. There are public and private parking areas in Pärnu. Parking tickets can be purchased at parking machines or using your mobile phone. Parking tickets can also be purchased at RKiosk.

8–9 June Vallikäär Meadow Good Food Festival – Grillfest

A song festival for the children of Pärnu County dedicated to the Centenary of the Republic of Estonia. The performers are school and pre school choirs, over 2,000 children in total. The event is organized by Pärnu County Folk Culture Association in collaboration with Pärnu City and local music teachers organizations.

2 June Häädemeeste Summer Garden North Livonian Festival The North Livonian Festival has been held in various formats since 2006. The festival serves as a twin event with Latvia and is celebrated every year in Häädemeeste on the first Saturday of June. The event features a big fair, various performances and workshops. 2–3 June Kihnu Island A Kihnu style nosh up (“Kihnu Keretäus”): a day of home cafés The first weekend of June sees Kihnu turn into an island of cafés, where you can stumble on cafés in farmyards and other places, as enthusiasts are opening temporary cafés for a day or two either right in their own yards or at other exciting loca-

tions. The aim is to celebrate local food, tickle your taste buds and offer local products, while also serving up a unique cultural menu. In the eloquent words of Uustalu Talvi: you can get a meal anywhere but for a good nosh up, you need to head to Kihnu! Saturday night ends with a song and dance party organized by Kihnu Cultural Space Foundation.

4 June Pärnu Celebration of the Estonian flag The blue, black and white flag was inaugurated as the flag of the Estonian Students’ Society on 4 June 1884 in Otepää. The inauguration day will be celebrated with festivities. For more, see: www.lipuselts.ee .

8–17 June Pärnu Pärnu Sailing Week Pärnu Yacht Club is organizing a week dedicated to sailing, titled

Grillfest is an annual event that takes place in Pärnu on the scenic Vallikäär Meadow in June. Over the course of two days, 300 caterers from Estonia and abroad offer up their best dishes in open air restaurants and cafés – there is even a restaurant for pets. The festival features the Good Food Fair, national fishing and cooking championships, and a large and animated play area for children. Top musical artists will perfrom on the various stages, and there is music for all tastes. Both festival days culminate in a massive fireworks display. PÄRNU CITY GALLERY Pärnu City Gallery is a subsidiary of Pärnu City Government, tasked with organizing art exhibitions and promoting the arts in Pärnu. It has been operating since 1995 and has hosted over 200 exhibitions during that time. Over the years, it has had several locations: from 1995 to 2002, at 30 Rüütli Street; from 2002 to 2010, at Pärnu Concert Hall, and its current location since November 2010 has been Pärnu Town Hall. As of November 2006, Pärnu City Gallery has been managing the Artists House, accommodating artists’ studios, cultural organizations, an open studio, a residence and gallery spaces. ENTERTAINMENT XXV INTERNATIONAL NUDE ART EXHIBITION MAN AND WOMAN The XXV International Nude Art Exhibition Man and Woman takes place at the Museum of New Art 3 June – 2 September. Regardless of the theme the exhibition tries to hit different tones in the relationships between men and women through various artistic interpretations. The nude art exhibition is one of the most popular events in the summer capital of Estonia.

XXXII PÄRNU FILM FESTIVAL Born from Lennart Meri’s idea in 1987 Pärnu International Documentary and Anthropology Film Festival is the oldest of its kind in the Baltic countries and is about to happen for the 32nd time from 25 June 25 to 8 July 2018. One of the main themes of the festival has always been the survival of indigenous peoples and their cultures. But the screening programme also includes social interpretations of contemporary society, portraits of interesting people and human relations as well as films on music and art. 6–8 July Kihnu Marina (Kihnu Island) Kihnu Sea and Folklore Festival The festival originates from the old tradition of the Fishermen’s Day but covers all aspects of life on the island of Kihnu. Kihnu folklore, handicrafts and customs were included in UNESCO’s list of Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003, and Kihnu Sea Festival is the largest event on the island presenting all of this heritage to visitors from the outside. The festivities include a fair and workshops dedicated to handicrafts and local food, concerts by local young instrumen-

The museum’s new granary, along with the new interactive permanent exhibition, was opened on 25 May 2012. SEPTEMBER 1–2 September Pärnu Jüri Jaanson Two Bridges Race The summer capital regains the status of the sports capital of Estonia in early September, as it hosts the Two Bridges Race, named in honour of the legendary rower Jüri Jaanson. The sports festival encompassing the entire weekend will be a treat for the whole family. Saturday’s events include fun runs for children and juniors, a wheelchair race and a sports fair. Sunday is the day of the Two Bridges Fun Run and Hike. The 10 km track follows the Pärnu River bank and is thus nearest to water in Estonia. HISTORY The Pärnu County history over 11,000 years is presented in an experiential format through the modern interactive permanent exhibition 11,000 Years of History – Experiences from Times Long Past at Pärnu Museum, which moved into its new granary building in 2012. Pärnu County became populated after the Ice Age (c. 116,000–11,600 years ago) by the inhabitants of a summer settlement in Pulli Village, whose rare bone and antler tools and hunting and fishing instruments are on display in the Stone Age room at Pärnu Museum. A star attraction from that era is the oldest sculpture of a human figure in the Baltics, made of an elk antler over 8,000 years ago. The Middle Ages exhibit portrays the era of the Crusades and the origins of Pärnu city. The town of Perona, together with the Cathedral and Dome School, was established in

1251 by Heinrich, the Bishop of Ösel Wiek. When the Samogitians looted the seat of the Bishop in 1263, the residents moved the town to the opposite bank of the river. In 1265, the new town was given its first privileges. The Teutonic Order, which governed Pärnu, joined the Hansaetic League in 1282, and already back then Pärnu was probably the only major sea port in Livonia. A wreck of a cog, a merchant ship, dating back to the 14th century is a prized item in the collection, along with an authentic 14 century river gate that negotiated the entire Hansaetic trade of Pärnu. The Russian Livonian War broke out in 1558, and being a strategically important stronghold, Pärnu kept changing hands between the warring sides. Pärnu surrendered to Swedish troops in August 1617 and soon became a fortress town. These developments are depicted in detail by Pärnu Museum’s Baroque exhibit, made up of rare artefacts originating

The first museum of contemporary art in Estonia has existed in Pärnu since 1992. The museum works all year round, and artists and film makers from all over the world are welcome to show their masterpieces here. The museum has a collection of several thousand works of visual art: paintings, photographs, films, printmaking and sculptures from all over the wide world. Over two decades, the annual exhibition of nudes Man and Woman at the Museum of New Art has grown into the most popular cultural event in Pärnu and also in Estonia and become an international landmark of our cultural life. An important phase, which is also the most emphasised section in the permanent exhibition at Pärnu Museum and its subsidiary Koidula Museum, is the national awakening and the birth of an independent Estonian state. Estonians assumed a more active role in cultural and social life in the second half of the 19th century. The need to provide education in the Estonian language was emphasised and the first issue of Perno Postimees, a newspaper edited by Johann Voldemar Jannsen, was published in 1857. Koidula Museum, located at 37 Jannseni Street, tells us the story of Jannsen’s editorial office and the life of Jannsen’s poet daughter Lydia Koidula, and also displays the interior of a mid 19th century schoolhouse. On 23 February 1918, the Manifesto to the Peoples of Estonia was read out loud in Pärnu, declaring Estonia an independent republic. Visitors to Pärnu Museum are offered a

In 1838, the Bathing House was launched (later the Mud Baths and the current Hedon Spa), which provided warm seawater baths in the summer and functioned as a sauna in the winter. The final section of the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the second half of the 20th century and features an experiential recollection of the beginning of the Soviet occupation and an exhibit dealing with deportations and the partisan Forest Brothers of Pärnu. Kun liettualainen samogitialaisten heimo tuli vuonna 1263 ryöstöretkelle piispankaupunkiin, sen asukkaat siirsivät kaupungin toiselle puolelle jokea. Vuonna 1265 uusi kaupunki sai ensimmäiset oikeutensa. Vuodesta 1282 lähtien Pärnua hallinnut saksalainen ritarikunta kuului Hansaliittoon ja todennäköisesti Pärnu oli jo tuolloin ainoa varteenotettava merisatama Liivinmaalla. Museossa on kunniapaikalla 1300-luvulta peräisin olevan koggilaivan hylky. Nähtävyyksiin kuuluu myös aito 1300-luvulta pe-

HISTORY räisin oleva jokiportti, jonka kautta kulki aikoinaan koko Pärnun hansakauppa. Vuonna 1558 puhkesi Venäjän ja Liivinmaan välinen sota ja strategisesti merkittävä Pärnu siirtyi taistelevien osapuolten välillä jatkuvasti puolelta toiselle. Elokuussa 1617 Pärnu antautui Ruotsin armeijalle ja Pärnusta tehtiin linnoituskaupunki. Tuon ajan kehityksestä antaa perusteellisen katsauksen Pärnun museon barokkiajan näyttely, jonka muodostavat harvinaiset esineet Pärnun linnoituskaupun-

gin varuskunnasta, entisiltä raatiherroilta, kaupankäynnistä ja Pärnun yliopistoelämästä (1699–1710). Kun vuonna 1834 tehtiin päätös poistaa Pärnu Venäjän keisarikunnan linnoituskaupunkien luettelosta, alkoi Pärnun kehittäminen erilaisia hoitoja tarjoavaksi kylpyläkaupungiksi. Vuonna 1838 avattiin kesäisin lämpimiä merivesikylpyjä tarjoava ja talvisin saunana käytetty Supelasutus eli kylpylaitos (myöhemmin Mudaravila eli kylpylä-mutahoitola ja nykyisin Hedon Spa). 1840-luvulla rannassa otettiin käyttöön kylpymajat ja kylpyvaunut. Olennainen aikakausi, johon on kiinnitetty eniten huomiota myös Pärnun museon perusnäyttelyssä ja sen alaisuudessa toimivassa Koidulan museossa, on virolaisten kansallinen herääminen ja oman valtion synty. 1800-luvun jälkipuolella virolaiset alkoivat osallistua aktiivisemmin kulttuuri- ja seuratoimintaan. Korostettiin vironkielisen opetuksen merkitystä ja vuonna 1857 ilmestyi Johann Voldemar Jannsenin toimittaman sanomalehden Perno Postimees ensimmäinen numero. J. V. Jannsenin sanomalehden toimitukseen, hänen runoilijatyttärensä Lydia Koidulan toimintaan ja 1800-luvun puolivälin koulutalon interiööriin voi tutustua osoitteessa Jannseni 37 sijaitsevassa Koidulan museossa. 23. helmikuuta 1918 luettiin Pärnussa Manifesti kaikille Vironmaan kansoille, jolla Viro julistettiin itsenäiseksi demokraattiseksi tasavallaksi. Pärnun museossa vierailijalla on mahdollista kokea virtuaalisesti tämä historiallinen helmikuun päivä. Perusnäyttelyn viimeinen osa keskittyy 1900-luvun toiseen puoliskoon sisältäen muistoja neuvostomiehityksen alusta, näyttelyn kyydityksistä ja Pärnumaan metsäveljistä. Näyttelyn lopettaa Viron uudelleenitsenäistymiseen viittaava näyttelyesine – Erika Salumäen vuoden 1992 Barcelonan olympialaisissa voittama ratapyöräilyn kultamitali, joka on myös Baltian maiden ensimmäinen olympiavoitto uudelleenitsenäistymisen jälkeen.

ELIISABET’S CHURCH In 1741, Russian Empress Elizabeth Petrovna ordered that 8,000 roubles from the public purse be used for the construction of a new Lutheran church in Pärnu. The former congregation inherited a new name for itself and for the sanctuary – Eliisabet. The cornerstone was laid on 25 June 1744 under the guidance of Riga’s master builder Heinrich Güterbock. The tower was probably built by Wülbern, who was also from Riga. A sphere and copper weathercock was set on top of the church tower on 27 March 1747. On 11 May the same year, the town council received the church from the master. These events are marked by the date “Anno 1747” above the main entrance. Internal works continued, and the church was consecrated on 29 March 1750. A hundred years later, on 10 September 1850, the end of a substantial new internal restoration was celebrated. A new altar and chancel had been installed. The altarpiece, painted by the Dutch artists van der Kann, was installed in September 1854. A new brick extension was built from spring to autumn in 1893 by G. Darmer. The old part and the floor were also repaired, new benches bought and church choirs converted. The ‘new’ church was consecrated on 19 October 1893. Eliisabet’s Church is located at 22 Nikolai Street, Pärnu.

ELISABETIN KIRKKO Vuonna 1741 venäläinen keisarinna Elisabet (Jelizaveta) Petrovna määräsi 8000 ruplaa valtionvaroista uuden luterilaisen kirkon rakentamiseen Pärnussa. Entinen virolainen Johanneksen seurankunta, sekä itse pyhättö saivat uuden nimen hallitsijattaren raamatullisen nimen (Elisabet) mukaan. 25. kesäkuuta 1744 perustettiin rakennuksen kulmakivi, rakennusmestarina oli Heinrich Güterbock, mestari Riiasta. Wulfer, joka oli myös Riiasta, pidetään tornin rakentajana.

Nuppi ja kuparinen kukko asetettiin kellotorniin 27. maaliskuuta 1747. Samana vuonna 11. syyskuuta raati hyväksyi mestarin valmiin työn. Nämä tapahtumat on merkitty kirjoituksella “Anno 1747” pääoven yläpuolella. Sisustustyöt jatkuivat vielä sen jälkeenkin ja kirkko vihittiin käyttöön 29. maaliskuuta 1750. 100 vuotta myöhemmin, 10. syyskuuta 1850, juhlittiin uuden suuren sisustuskorjauksen päättämistä. Kirkkoon asennettiin uusi alttari ja saarnastuoli. Vuoden 1854 syyskuussa pystytettiin alttaritaulu, jonka maalasi hollantilainen van der Kann. Vuoden 1893 keväästä saman vuoden syksyyn saakka kesti G. Darmerin johtama uuden siipirakennuksen rakentaminen. Samanaikaisesti korjattiin vanha osa, lattia, ostettiin uudet penkit, parvekkeet rakennettiin uudelleen. Niin sanottu uusi kirkko vihittiin käyttöön 19. lokakuuta 1893. CHURCH OF ST. CATHERINE THE GREAT MARTYR IN PÄRNU

The Church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr in Pärnu or St. Catherine’s Church was built by architect Pjotr Jegorov in 1768 and since it was built about a century before the majority of orthodox churches, it differs from them in architectural terms. The church was built by order of the Russian empress Catherine II (1762 – 1796) after 1764, when she was passing through Pärnu. The church was built on the basis of an order and financing from Catherine II to replace a wooden church first built for the garrison of Pärnu in 1752. The church was consecrated in 1769. The church is in excellent condition, it has six towers and the church bells ring frequently around the city. St. Catherine’s Church is located at 8 Vee Street, Pärnu.

The Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church of the Transformation of Our Lord in Pärnu is a cathedral of the diocese of Pärnu and Saare. Its construction began in 1902 and was finished and consecrated in 1904. Construction of the old Russian style church was led by Mihkel Suigusaar, architect Vladimir Lunski and building master Karl Klein. The iconostasis with 11 icons was finished in 1927. The Church of the Transformation of Our Lord in Pärnu is located at 5 Aia Street.

Pärnun Suurmarttyyri Katariinan kirkon eli Jekaterinan kirkon rakennutti arkkitehti Pjotr Jegorov vuonna 1768, noin sata vuotta ennen muita ortodoksikirkkoja, minkä takia sen arkkitehtuuri on niin erilainen muihin ortodoksisiin kirkkorakennuksiin verrattuna. HEALTH THROUGH MOVEMENT Pärnu is a city suitable for all kinds of physical activity. The seaside park has fitness trails; the long coastline is perfect for jogging or walking, and if you love water, you can go swimming in the sea or river. In recent years, the light traffic road around Pärnu River, commonly referred to as “Jaanson’s trail”, has been the most popular sporting venue. City residents nicknamed the trail to honour Jüri Jaanson, a famous rower born in Pärnu, who is now a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament). Jaanson’s trail runs along the river to connect the Pärnu Old Bridge in the city centre and the New Bridge in the Papiniidu district. This way, you can start walking, jogging or biking at any point, go along the river bank and across two bridges and come back to where you started. The part of the light traffic road in the city centre features interesting design solutions, and there are numerous benches along the way. Jaanson’s trail is keenly used for recreational sports or leisurely walks with children or dogs. We do not recommend walking there, but, luckily, there are free buses from the city centre that will bring you directly to Kaubamajakas. Naturally, you can also get there using the city buses or by taxi. Kaubamajakas and other shopping locations in the Papiniidu area are popular with Pärnu residents and visitors alike. Goods to suit anyone’s taste can certainly be found there, and naturally, you will not have to suffer from the pangs of hunger as the Gurmaania food court at Kaubamajakas features numerous eating places.

WHERE TO EAT? Pärnu is famous for its numerous cafés, restaurants and pubs. There are plenty in each city district, and all of them are distinctive and provide a range of dining experiences. You can have a decent meal at a café or a pub, so there is no reason to fear that, for example, there will be no food to accompany your beer or coffee. The greatest dining experience undoubtedly awaits you in Pärnu’s restaurants, where food is a bit more expensive than in pubs, but the price is justified considering the highly impressive service and interiors. The standards of Pärnu restaurants are rising every year, and what certainly contributes to this is Pärnu Restaurant Week held every spring. If you appreciate delicious food, we definitely recommend visiting Pärnu again in spring during this period. The Café Week is held in autumn, but its “fruit” can also be enjoyed in the summer. One can safely claim that the standards of Pärnu restaurants are no lower than those of the best in Estonia or Europe, and as far as the food in pubs and cafés goes, sometimes it can beat what you can get at a restaurant. In Pärnu, food is generally served until late

evening, so you can just enter any café, pub or restaurant you see first without having to look for a fast-food outlet although Pärnu has plenty of these. Favourite dishes among local pub-goers include a decent slice of pork with sauerkraut on the side, but a cheese schnitzel is equally popular. World cuisines are represented by places specializing in Asian, Italian, Armenian and Georgian food. What some of these offer can be described as properly authentic; the food in others is slightly more “Estonianized”, which is not at all bad and rather provides something that cannot be found elsewhere. Keeping in mind that the best eating places in Pärnu are a short walk away from one another, the city is perfect for culinary exploration tours, during which you can have a meal at one place and take a walk to another one only to realize that you are hungry and could eat something again.

Although the town centre is near, you can sunbathe and grill because the house is surrounded by a private garden. There is also a small play corner for children in the garden. YACHT CLUB Pärnu Yacht Club was launched by a handful of Imperial Russian Navy officers, led by the Pärnu Harbour Master Dmitri Luhmanov, who also drafted the first statutes of the Pärnu Sailing Club. On 21 June 1906, Julius Dicks, Anatoli Palibin, Dmitri Luhmanov, Artur Fröhling and Christjan Meybaum signed a petition requesting that the Maritime Ministry approve the establishment of Pärnu Sailing Club based on the prepared statutes. Therefore, 21 June 1906 is considered the club’s birthday and the listed gentlemen its founding members. Although the current Pärnu Yacht Club guesthouse is not very large, quite a lot of people stay at the yacht club, many of them on board the yachts that have brought them to Pärnu. The yacht club itself, with its sailboats, guesthouse and restaurant is one of the loveliest riverside spots in Pärnu. It is a favourite among visitors as well as locals. It often hosts concerts with live music and the frequent sailing regattas have a calming effect on the nerves.

PURSISEURA Pärnun pursiseuran perustamisen panivat vireille keisarillisen Venäjän meriupseerit johdossaan satamapäällikkö Dmitri Luhmanov, joka laati myös Pärnun pursiseuran ensim-

mäisten sääntöjen luonnoksen. 21. kesäkuuta 1906 allekirjoittivat Julius Dicks, Anatoli Palibin, Dmitri Luhmanov, Artur Fröhling ja Christjan Meybaum anomuksen, jolla meriministeriötä pyydettiin hyväksymään Pärnun pursiseuran perustaminen laadittujen sääntöjen mukaisesti. 21. kesäkuuta 1906 on täten katsottava seuran perustamisajankohdaksi ja mainitut herrat seuran perustajajäseniksi. Vaikka Pärnun pursiseuran nykyinen vierastalo ei olekaan kovin suuri, yöpyy paikalla suuri määrä ihmisiä, koska osa viettää yönsä veneissä, joilla he ovat saapuneet Pärnuun. Pärnujoen rannalla sijaitsevat pursiseuran tilat purjeveneineen, vierastaloineen ja ravintoloineen kuuluvat Pärnun kaupungin viihtyisimpiin ajanviettopaikkoihin. Siellä viihtyvät sekä matkailijat että paikalliset asukkaat. Usein järjestetään elävän musiikin konsertteja, ja purjehduskilpailut auttavat purkamaan jännitteitä.

Fishing gear and lures can be purchased from the Bait Shop. We offer fishing advice in Estonian, English and Russian and take groups on fishing trips in either a small boat or larger vessel. Nature lovers and romantics can be taken on a joyride with the historic ship Johanna. Unique fishing cabins, holiday houses and glamping tents are offered for a good night’s sleep for visitors who have extended their stay. There is a caravan park for adventurers and spacious area for campers. The heart of the Fishing Village holiday and leisure centre is a harbour cafe right by the river where trout can be caught. You can catch trout in the pond and it will be grilled or smoked as you prefer. As you wait for food you can play football, disc golf or shoot arrows at the archery court. Fishing Village is a nice place to rest, go fishing and simply enjoy nature.

KIHNU

Visiting Pärnu County would be incomplete without a trip to the island of Kihnu. The unique ancient traditions that are partly still observed and the way of life on Kihnu are included on the UNESCO cultural heritage list. Modern day Kihnu is a unique amalgam of the present and the past. For example, the women of Kihnu routinely wear traditional skirts (kört) that they weave themselves; small children know the traditional dances and songs, and the Kihnu dialect is taught at school. The attention of UNESCO inspired the launch of the Kihnu Cultural Space Foundation, responsible for the development and preservation of the culture of Kihnu.

Pärnumaan vierailu ei ole täydellinen, ellet mene käymään Kihnun saarella. Kihnun ainutlaatuiset, osittain nykypäivään säilyneet muinaiset perinteet ja elämäntapa on otettu Unescon aineettoman kulttuuriperinnön luetteloon. Tämän päivän Kihnu on omaperäinen sekoitus nykyaikaa ja menneisyyttä. Saaren naisväki käyttää edelleen itse kutomiaan kansanpuvun hameita, joista käytetään nimitystä kört; pienetkin lapset osaavat kihnulaisia tansseja ja lauluja ja Kihnun murretta opetetaan koulussakin. Unescon huomion ansiosta on perustettu säätiö nimeltään Kihnu Kultuuriruum, jonka tehtävänä on Kihnun kulttuurin säilyttäminen ja kehittäminen.

The sea near Kihnu Island is shallow and rocky, and the island is surrounded by a multitude of islets and low ridges. The most beautiful group, Sangelaiud, form a nature protection area. Kihnu Island and the surrounding sea with its islets is an important nesting area for many birds. For this reason, Kihnu Strait was declared a special protection area of international importance. The best way to get around the small Kihnu Island is either to rent a bicycle on the island or to take one with you. A tour from the back of a lorry and a fish picnic are sure to be unique experiences.

Kihnua ympäröivä meri on matala ja kivinen, saaren ympärillä on runsaasti pieniä luotoja ja matalia selänteitä. Kauneimmat luodot, Sangelaiud, on otettu luonnonsuojelualueeksi. Sekä Kihnun saari että ympäröivä meri luotoineen tarjoaa pesimäpaikan monille linnuille, ja Kihnun salmi onkin nimetty kansainvälisesti merkittäväksi lintualueeksi. Paras tapa tutustua pieneen Kihnun saareen on vuokrata paikan päältä tai tuoda mantereelta mukanaan polkupyörä. A LONG DAY’S ROAD DISAPPEARS INTO THE NIGHT With their white nights, summers in Estonia are timeless, and no one wants to sleep the summer away. Pärnu nightlife gathers around pubs and cafés, which often feature live music, so dancing and partying last well into the night. Most Pärnu pubs and cafés put out tables and chairs on terraces in the summer, and in some places the band or DJ performs right in the street, which makes the city atmosphere spirited and youthful. Pärnu has fewer nightclubs than pubs, but it is still enough for anyone to find a place to their liking. Most nightclubs are located in the city centre, near Rüütli street, where you will find the Mirage, Kassa, Vaarikas, Aptek and Sugar. Club Sunset opens on the beach for the summer. Each summer, another new club where you can enjoy the music and dance suddenly emerges. Pärnu does not mind partying, but a good party implies sensible behaviour. If you respect others, you will be respected, and no troubles should arise. In case anything bad does happen, make sure to inform the police by calling the 112 emergency number.

PÄRNU COUNTY Pärnu County is the largest county in Estonia, with an area of 5,419 km², population of 86,163. Considering that half of the county’s population live in Pärnu city, these figures indicate that a large part of Pärnu County is poor in terms of people, but rich in terms of nature. Pärnu County has an abundance of forests, long white beaches and opportunities for hiking, bird watching or lazing in the sun. While Pärnu County has a wide range of accommodation options, consider spending at least one night in the open air and in the wild. For that purpose, the State Forest Management Centre (RMK) has created a recreation area located in Pärnu County. The area accommodates both beach and forest getaways. A coastal vacation invites you to enjoy the beauty of the setting sun, listen to the sounds of nature, build sand castles and relish just being. Coastal meadows with their varied plant and bird life are a treat for nature lovers. As the RMK recreation area is both wild and civilised, it is a good fit for urban people in need of a short nature getaway. More advanced hikers can also expect more serious wilderness, but these are more inland away from the sea, as the entire coastline is peppered with the houses of fishermen, who are

still actively fishing along the coast of Pärnu County. Coastal meadows and small fishing villages are of course scenic, but if you want to run into a bear, also featured on the coat of arms of Pärnu County, head towards Vändra.

ROMANTIC COASTLINE During the Soviet era, Penu Village in Pärnu County’s Tahkuranna Municipality used to be home to the Vzmorje resort. According to detailed research, this was supposed to be the sunniest place on the western coast of the USSR, which made it a perfect spot for a resort for cosmonauts and rocket scientists. According to village legends, the world’s first female cosmonaut herself, Valentina Tereshkova, had walked on these beaches.

The Kosmonautika resort is a good place to spend the night before setting off to explore the coastline and Häädemeeste and Kabli, all the way to the Latvian border. KURGJA FARM Kurgja Village is home to Kurgja Farm, or the Farm Museum of C. R. Jakobson, which provides a comprehensive picture of life on the land. Carl Robert Jakobson (1841–1882) was an Estonian farmer, politician, educator and one of the most beloved leaders of the Estonian national movement. Jakobson became a farm owner in 1874. As he wished to be a role model and a teacher, he intended to build his farm at Kurgja as an exemplar. His dream was to establish there

PÄRNU COUNTY a dairy industry school, which was meant to develop into a complete exemplar school of agriculture. All the buildings at Kurgja Linnutaja Farm were completed according to C.R. Jakobson’s own design and are therefore unique. The Farm Museum of C. R. Jakobson was established in 1948 and its first director was Jakobson’s eldest daughter Linda. Buildings needing partial or complete restoration have now been completed. The main building of the museum houses an exhibition on the life and activities of C. R. Jakobson. As a new addition, the threshing barn and grain dryer were completed according to Jakobson’s original design. The museum is special because it is an active farm with cattle breeding and land cultivation. Estonian native cattle, white headed sheep, Estonian horses, roosters, hens and turkeys are a true feast for the eye.

Valtion metsänhoitokeskus (Riigimetsa Majandamise Keskus, RMK) on perustanut tähän tarkoitukseen retkeilyalueen. Alue soveltuu sekä ranta- että metsälomailuun. Rantaloma tarjoaa mahdollisuuden nauttia kauniista auringonlaskuista, kuunnella luonnon ää-

78 niä, rakentaa hiekkalinnoja tai vain nauttia pelkästä oleilusta. RMK:n retkeilyalue edustaa samanaikaisesti sekä villiä luontoa että sivistystä, joten se sopii erinomaisesti kaupunkilaiselle, joka haluaa pistäytyä luonnon keskellä. Kokeneemmat retkeilijät löytävät paljon villimpääkin luontoa, mutta se jää etäämmälle merestä, sillä Pärnumaan rannikolla toimii edelleen kalastajia, joiden talot reunustavat koko rannikkoa. Rantaniityt ja kalastajakylät ovat näkemisen arvoisia, mutta jos haluat kohdata karhun, joka on kuvattu myös Pärnumaan vaakunaan, kannattaa suunnata pikemmin Vändran seudulle.

ROMANTTINEN RANTATIE Pärnumaalla Tahkurannan kunnassa Penun kylässä meren rannalla sijaitsi neuvostoaika-

na Vzmorjen lomakeskus. Se oli paikka, jossa aurinko paistoi perusteellisten tutkimusten mukaan eniten koko Neuvostoliiton länsirannikolla. Täten paikka soveltui kosmonauttien ja avaruustutkijoiden lomakeskukseksi. Kylässä liikkuvien tarinoiden mukaan on rantahietikolla nähty kuljeskelemassa myös maailman ensimmäinen naiskosmonautti Valentina Tereškova. Nyt paikalla toimii perinteitään arvostava Kosmonautikan lomakeskus, jonka läheisyyteen on perustettu myös avaruusmuseo Kosmonautika Muuseum. Kosmonautikan lomakeskuksessa yöpyessään pääsee helposti tutustumaan rannikkoon Häädemeesten ja Kablin alueella aina Latvian rajaan saakka. Muutaman kilometrin säteeltä löytyy sekä rantoja, retkipolkuja, leipomoita että museoita, puhumattakaan upeasta luonnosta ja mereen laskevasta auringosta. Häädemeeste, Kabli ja Kosmonautikan lomakeskus ovat luonnollisesti vain joitakin niistä monista mielenkiintoisista paikoista, joita löytyy Romanttisen rantatien varrelta. Romanttinen rantatie on yhteensä 250 km pitkä rantaviiva Pärnumaalla. Se alkaa Varblan katajistoista ja päätyy Treimanin hiekkarannoille. Romanttisen rantatien (www.rannatee.ee) varrelta löytyy paratiisirantoja, idyllisiä kalastajakyliä ja maalaismaisemia, autioita soita, lintujen äänistä kaikuvia rantaniittyjä ja raikkaita männiköitä. Vierailusta hyväntuulisten rannikkolaisten luo jää jokaisen kulkijan sydämeen unohtumaton muisto.

KURGJAN MAATILA Pärnumaalla Kurgjan kylässä sijaitsee Kurgjan maatila eli Carl Robert Jakobsonin maatilamuseo, joka esittelee kattavasti elämää pellolla ja pellon laidalla. Carl Robert Jakobson (1841–1882) tuli Virossa tunnetuksi tietoisena maanviljelyn edistäjänä, poliitikkona ja kansanvalistajana ja on Viron kansallisen

heräämisen rakastetuimpia johtajia. Jakobson osti Kurjgan maatilan vuonna 1874. Pyrkimyksenään näyttää esimerkkiä ja opastaa muita hän päätti perustaa Kurgjalle mallitilan. Hänen haaveenaan oli perustaa Kurgjalle maitotalouskoulu, jonka piti sittemmin laajeta täydelliseksi maanviljelyksen mallioppilaitokseksi. Kaikki Kurgjan Linnutajan maatilan rakennukset on rakennettu Jakobsonin suunnitelmien mukaan ja ne ovat siis ainutlaatuisia. Vuonna 1948 perustettiin Jakobsonin maatilamuseo, jonka ensimmäisenä johtajana toimi hänen vanhin tyttärensä Linda. Täydellistä tai osittaista kunnostusta vaatineet rakennukset on nyt saatu kuntoon. Museon päärakennuksessa sijaitsee Jakobsonin elämää ja toimintaa esittelevä näyttely. Uudisrakennuksena on valmistunut riihi Jakobsonin suunnitelman mukaan. Museon erikoisuus on se, että siellä kasvatetaan karjaa ja viljellään maata. Silmäniloa tarjoavat virolaiset maatiaislehmät, valkopäiset lampaat, eestinhevonen, kukot, kanat ja kalkkunat.

FOUR WALKING TOURS IN PÄRNU Walking tour 1. Very slow.

Begin your walk at Rüütli Square, near Pärnu Hotel. Rest your feet by the fountain and head west along Rüütli Street. The main street of Pärnu is full of shops and cafés. Rest your feet at a café. Continue walking until you reach Jakobson Park. Rest your feet there. Cross Akadeemia Street and you will reach Vallikäär, a former defence structure surrounded by a fragment of the moat. Climb the stairs to the top of the mound, sit down on a bench and rest your feet.

Walking tour 2. Very fast.

Begin on Akadeemia Street near Pärnu Central Library. Walk fast towards the south until you reach Munamäe Park, which used to be part of the defence structure but is now a playground and sports field for children and teenagers. Take a sharp turn towards the west and walk along Lõuna Street until the Tallinn Gate. After having checked out Tallinn Gate, continue rushing west along Ringi Street, until you reach the river. Take a brisk turn to the right, walk along the riverside past the Yacht Club and under the Central Bridge until you reach a rest area by the river. Please relax now, you are on holiday after all!

Walking tour 3. Very long.

Start off at Endla Theatre and head east along Pikk Street. The word pikk means literally “long”. Walk towards Riga, leaving the Riga Road towards the river onto Suur Jõe Street. This is one of Pärnu’s most exciting streets, which used to accommodate both a hospital and a prison. Nowadays it is a lovely renovated wooden suburb. Walk until the city border, flanked by pine trees. Turn towards the south and begin walking west, first along Merimetsa Street and then Mai Street. Keep going straight and you will reach downtown Pärnu, where you can replace your worn out shoes with new ones.

Stick Pärnu This Week into your bag along with maps, pick a random direction and start walking slowly. Do not be afraid of crossing the river – check out even the smallest streets. Feel free and discover the city of Pärnu. If you feel like it, pick up the pace, slowing down again when you feel the need. This is the best way to get to know the city.
