The State of a Forest By Carl Oscar Olson

The pristine nature of Nantucket isn’t an accident or some stroke of good luck. There are forces hard at work every day and all year long to maintain the island’s natural beauty and protect its charm. As population rises and developers seek new opportunities, we are ever thankful for the pieces of land, large and small, that remain untouched. The State Forest began to take root more than a century ago. The year was 1913, and Massachusetts acquired what is known as the South Pasture from the Nantucket Civic League, an organization founded in 1903 to promote the general welfare of Nantucket through an informed citizenry. This area, home to the Wannacomet Water Company, is bordered by Rugged Road in the south and Old South Road in the north, running the length of both Lovers Lane and Bayberry Siasconset Lane. A few years later in 1919, the North Pasture was added to the property. It extends sharply north past Polpis Road with Hinsdale Road serving as the edge to the south. Forest management began on the properties in the late 1920s or early 1930s. It was The Great Depression, and the thought was that softwoods would be economically viable for the island and state as a whole. Stretches of pine were planted, with more added in the 1950s. Unfortunately, those plans never came to fruition when storm and insect damage, disease, and weak local markets made for a bust. Some of the those old conifers still stand today, though they are mostly rotten and pose a potential fire hazard. More recently, in the 1980s, much consideration was given to converting the pine plantations into hardwood to meet local demand for firewood, fence Scouts at the Highland Games posts, and the like. Some trees were planted, but no progress was ever made in that direction. Instead, forest management made the move toward recreation and, more importantly, the protection of rare and dwindling habitat for Nantucket’s native flora and fauna. For now, the forest management plan consists of vegetation control, forest fire prevention, and removal of damaged growth, all of which is aimed at maintaining aesthetics and providing passive recreation.
In 1955, just when those pine saplings were beginning to reach for the sky, the Nantucket Boy Scouts started a camp in the State Forest. At that time, 16 acres of land was donated by the Nantucket Civic League. Known as Camp Richard, the area continued to flourish in the 1970s when two more land donations were made by the NCL. Since then, the local Boy Scouts have proudly hosted countless troops from Massachusetts and beyond on their 100 acres of unspoiled wilderness. The camp boasts shelters for camping, obstacle and orienteering courses, athletic fields, horseshoe pits, and more. As the camp continued to grow in size and popularity, the Scouts founded the non-profit Camp Richard’s Campers Association to help bring much needed funds to their mission. All of the work has been done the same way since. With the help of the Nantucket scouts and the thousands of hours given by volunteers to ensure the land remains pristine and in the hands of its proper stewards: Nantucketers.
But no good thing comes without a fight. Back in 2013, the nearby regional Boy Scouts group The Cape and Islands Council of the Boy Scouts of America attempted to assert ownership over the land that the Nantucket Boy Scouts called home for more than 50 years. The long standing rights of the NCL and the local scouts were being trampled on, and their plan was to sell a portion of the land to a developer. When Nantucket took a stand, the Cape and Islands entity took their case to court in Barnstable without by Meg Glidden the courtesy of notifying the Nantucket scouts. They again claimed ownership of the land, ignoring the long standing, established rights of the islanders. A superior court judge granted them an ex parte injunction, a decision that not only awarded ownership to the council but also barred local leaders from the camp.

Ground was broken and construction began for Nantucket’s very own disc golf course.
State of a Forest from page 13 Fortunately, the NCL had the foresight to retain a right to revert the land should it ever fall out of the hands of the local scouts. Since there was an attempted sale of the land, all the property was reverted back to the ownership of the NCL. Had the sale gone through, it would have been one of the largest sales of virgin land on Nantucket. Based on this revelation, the court’s decision was modified. Both scout groups were ordered to run the camp jointly and the Cape and Islands Council was deemed the official trustee of Camp Richard. Though it was a step in the right direction, there was still more work to be done. The opposition had shown their true colors with their intended sale, and anything less than full ownership by the Nantucket Boy Scouts would be unacceptable. The Nantucket Land Council, a non-profit dedicated to protecting the natural world and rural character of the island through conservation and education, joined the fight, along with hundreds of informed and concerned residents. The battle had begun to support the scouts and protect Camp Richard. Next, since the judge appointed the Cape and Island Council as trustee without hearing any evidence, the appeals court agreed to listen to arguments on whether their appointment was appropriate. Finally, the case was sent back to the Superior Court to decide once and for all on the proper trustee. Last summer on July 16, the 6-year legal battle came to an end. Campers and our island community were overjoyed when The Camp Richards Campers Association was declared the just and proper trustee of the property. District Superior Court Judge Nickerson declared the Nantucket camp be used by Nantucket scouts. For the past 2 years, the Nantucket Land Council and Camp Richard has hosted Family Fun Day on Nantucket. It has been a great day to get outside in October and enjoy live music, food, guided tours, and games for the whole family. Stay tuned to NantucketLandCouncil.org for details on this year’s festivities. The scout’s victory hasn’t been the only good thing to happen in the State Forest in recent years. In the Summer of 2012, a new addition was welcomed to the State Forest.
Disc Golf
14 nantucket HOME
Established in 2008, Nantucket Disc Golf set out that summer to bring Nantucket its first disc golf course. The goal of NDG was to provide residents and visitors with an inexpensive family-friendly fun activity. Todd Rainwater, founder and president of NDG, had recently become involved in his father’s foundation, The Rainwater Charitable Foundation. Their mission, to enhance the physical and mental well being of kids across the country, is an inseparable part of the sport. Bringing the game to the island was an easy way to share the game he loves and help fulfill the objectives of his father’s foundation. Construction began in 2010, and after its completion in 2012 an inaugural tournament was held. Thirty-eight players from six divisions competed, and prizes were awarded to champions of each division. Designed by one of the top disc golf course designers in the world, John Houck, the plan was to make the game accessible to newcomers and challenging for professionals. With shorter tees leaning for beginners and some holes running over 800 feet, natural obstacles and a par of 67, it rounds out to be one of the trickiest courses in New England. Like Camp Richard, almost all the work was done by the island’s own volunteers. People poured into the woods on Sunday mornings during construction to help make the dream a reality. In clearing the land for the course, Rainwater, his wife, and the volunteers were also able to remove some the rotten pines from past plantings, helping to alleviate some of the dangers of fire. Every summer in June, NDG hosts the Nantucket Disc Golf Open. The event attracts close to 100 amateur and professional players to compete for a purse of $5,000. Campers and disc golfers aren’t the only people enjoying the State Forest. Visitors regularly partake in activities like biking both on wooded trails and paved bike paths, dog walking, geocaching, nature studies, and hunting. There are other natives that enjoy the woods as well. The area is home to more than 50 species of birds, countless insects and arachnids, and many other animals large and continued on page 102...

The Power of Our Community The new Nantucket Cottage Hospital opened its doors for patient care on February 20th, 2019, marking an historic milestone for the island community. Thanks to an unprecedented fundraising campaign, the largest in Nantucket history, the new hospital was built entirely through private donations, debt-free, and with no taxpayer dollars. The new state-of-the-art hospital completely replaced Nantucket’s former aging facility, built in 1957, and expands capacity and services while enhancing access, safety and privacy for patients. The new facility sets a national standard for small community hospitals, with expanded outpatient services but also capacity for inpatient care and surgery, giving patients a central location for all their healthcare needs, including primary, emergency, and specialty care, as well as diagnostic testing. With the new facility now open, the nal phase of the project is underway, including the demolition of the old hospital and the completion of the nal site work, parking area, and landscaping. This phase is expected to be completed by June 2019.

State of a Forest from page 14 small. Some are considered rare or even threatened, such as the long-eared owl and several moth species. To add to the overall vulnerability of the site, the forest undoubtedly holds some archaeological interest as well. For such a small island, Nantucket is home to hundreds of significant finds by collectors and professionals alike. Discoveries have dated back to pre-archaic times in human history, meaning that people have been living on Nantucket as far back as 9,000 years ago. There have been 4 significant discoveries inside the boundaries of the State Forest, and in 2009, an intensive archeological survey was conducted in the south pasture before the disc golf construction began, the 6th such survey on the property. Though no significant discoveries were made at that time, the forest is still considered to have high archaeological sensitivity. Our State Forest is one of the few in the state where all management, maintenance, and development lies in the hands of the town. At that, we are so fortunate to have the island individuals and organizations who bring their love and passion to these worthy causes, because properties such as these are not given as rights. They are privileges to be fought for and protected.
