Holiday Magic

More than 50 years ago, the originators of the first Nantucket Christmas Stroll were trying to encourage island residents to do their holiday shopping locally instead of traveling across Nantucket Sound to shop at malls on Cape Cod.

That first year—1973—island merchants kept their shops open late the first Friday in December, offering wine, hot chocolate, mulled cider, and holiday treats to shoppers as they greeted their neighbors and shopped for holiday gifts. That evening, christened as a “Christmas Shoppers Stroll,” was a mere three hours in duration and was a huge success.

In subsequent years, the event grew exponentially, drawing larger crowds until it evolved into a nationally- and, ultimately, internationally-renowned holiday event. Now organized by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, the popular and festive Nantucket Christmas Stroll is typically held during the first full weekend of December.

This year’s Stroll is being celebrated as the 50th because the events was canceled one year during the pandemic. The 2024 Nantucket Christmas Stroll will feature more than 150 decorated 6-foot holiday trees set along downtown streets, along with a 20-foot tree at the top of Main Street. All these trees will be lit up at dusk the day after Thanksgiving during a special Illumination Ceremony led by Nantucket’s Town Crier: a fun family gathering with caroling.

“As we celebrate this momentous 50th anniversary, we're reminded of the spirit of community and togetherness that has made the Nantucket Christmas Stroll a beloved tradition for generations,” said Peter Burke, Executive Director of the Nan-

A Cold Tradition for Turkey Day

More than two decades ago, the Nantucket Atheneum was chosen as beficiary of a fundraising effort that has become such beloved island tradition. Even during the pandemic, participents continued to do it from homes around the world.

This November 28, more than 1,000 people will again gather on Children’s Beach, rain or shine, wearing coats and costumes over their swimsuits, towels in hand, ready to walk, run, swim, and dive into the chilly waters of Nantucket Harbor at the 23rd annual Cold Turkey Plunge.

The Cold Turkey Plunge is fun for the brave participants and for the many spectators who are too chicken be “Freezin’ for a Reason,” and it raises tens of thousands of dollars for the Nantucket Atheneum’s Weezie Library for Children and the many free programs they offer year-round. This year’s fundraising goal is $125,000, and Director of Development Maggie O’Reilly says they are well on their way to reach that number.

According to O’Reilly, who was interviewed by Janet Forest in a series of three Atheneum podcasts ( nantucketatheneum.buzzsprout.com ), there were 195 people Plunging the first year. Last year, 1,100 Plungers participated. and hundreds more watched. The tradition of holding the Cold Turkey Plunge on Children’s Beach Thanksgiving morning has only been interrupted three times. In 2018, high winds, frigid temperatures, and ice in the harbor caused organizers to postpone it to the following morning. And due to COVID limitations during 2020 and 2021, organizers had to get creative—in place of an in-person event, they encouraged a remote “Plunge Your Way” effort. It was successful and continues to be part of the Cold Turkey Plunge for people who are unable to travel to Nantucket to join the crowd at Children’s Beach Thanksgiving morning. Fun videos of people “Plunging” from Vermont, Georgia, Marblehead MA, and even from Beacon Hill in Boston can be watched on Instagram at #plungedayyourway.

During Forest’s podcast interview, O’Reilly credited the success of the Plunge in part to how quick it is for participants, explaining that it takes “about four continued on page 21

Celebrate the Holidays with Art

Art takes center stage at three Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) locations this holiday season. Happening now through December 13 is the AAN Holiday Expo in the Champion Gallery at the Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive.

“This special faculty and student holiday exhibition features works by a wide range of our AAN students, teachers, and our artists in residence. There will be works on paper, paintings, ceramics, prints and even some specialty gift items all created by our talented students and faculty,” said AAN Artistic Director Robert Frazier. The Holiday Expo is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.

“We are pleased, at this festive time of year, to highlight works created by our students, from beginners to established professionals, by our team of accomplished teachers, and works by our artists in residence from around the country,” said AAN Executive Director Tracey Sears.

The day after Thanksgiving in the Big Gallery, upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf, AAN will host a Weekend Pop Up. From 11 am to 3 pm on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30, guests can shop for holiday gifts created by local artist members: fine art, ceramics, and more. And from Friday, December 6 through Sunday, December 8, a Stroll Pop-Up in Big Gallery will offer a second chance to find that special piece of art for folks on your gift list.

The popular Cool Yule Opening Reception on Friday, December 6 will welcome art lovers into AAN’s award-winning Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street from 5 to 7 pm. Gather to enjoy holiday refreshment, chat with artists, and view the Holiday Small Works exhibition that continues in the gallery through December 21. Artwork in this show has a size restriction of 12 x 16 inches or smaller, making it the ideal place to find holiday gifts of art.

For details about AAN, their shows, memberships, art talks, and classes, visit nantucketarts.org or follow them on Instagram @ackartists.

Where Legends Are Born

I bet you all remember where you were the evening of Sunday, February 5, 2017. Our beloved New England Patriots were once again playing in the Super Bowl, this time facing a juggernaut Atlanta Falcons team. And the Patriots were getting worked—down 28 to 3 in the fourth quarter. Everyone on the Atlanta team box was ready to pop the champagne corks. Everyone except for one guy, that is: Scott Pioli (now a Nantucket resident) was the Assistant General Manager of the Falcons at that time. He had been a significant cog in the development of the New England Patriots dynasty, serving in the player personnel department from 2000-2008. Thus, he knew all about a guy named Tom Brady. Pioli was quoted by Mike Kadlick of WEEI – Boston as he remembered that game: “All the folks I’m working with, they’re high-fiving. It’s, you know, out of control. But I was a mess. I felt this nervousness.”

Pioli said that his fellow Falcons crew urged him to lighten up and enjoy the moment. But Pioli knew something that they didn’t. “I whipped around and said you ‘effin people don’t get it! That guy across the field, number 12, is Freddy ‘effin Kruger! He’s coming back!”

Scott Pioli was right, of course. Tom Brady and the Patriots did come back that day to win the wildest Super Bowl victory of all time!

Although perhaps not quite as high-profile as Super Bowl LI, the Nantucket Angler’s Club 2024 Inshore Classic fishing tournament had a lot of the same drama. This year’s Beach Division title was as close and as hard-fought as an overtime Super Bowl game. A fish caught in the last hour of competition decided the winner of the five-week contest, with the leaders fishing right beside each other. Yes, the 2024 tournament was one for the ages!

Every Nantucket fisher looks forward to the Inshore Classic. The island beaches come alive, day and night, filled with folks like me who dream of winning this amazing contest. For five weeks beginning around Labor Day, Nantucket anglers take to the beaches or boats to catch (and release, for the most part) four different species of fish: striped bass, bluefish, bonito, and false albacore. Fish are placed against a measuring tape and pictures are taken to verify the length. Those photos are then submitted by email to the tournament administrators, with points awarded per inch of measured fish. This tournament has a bunch of different categories: Boat, Beach, Fly Fishing, and Juniors. Weekly prizes are awarded for the longest fish of ea ch species and for the overall tournament. But the big prize—the Lombardi Trophy of Nantucket fishing—is the overall beach tournament. The Beach Champion is the fisherman who had the greatest combination of points for each of those fish (one fish per species) at the end of the five weeks. This title is won in a mano a mano contest of skill and perseverance. How there isn’t a legal holiday for a Main Street trophy presentation and subsequent parade I just don’t know.

The Inshore Classic Tournament is perfect in its challenges, much in the same way that cribbage uses the numbers 15 and 31 to perfection. It seems so easy— just gear up, roll out to the beach, catch some different types of fish, and you’re on the leader board, right? Um, not so fast… First of all, you’re going to have to put some significant hours in. You have to fish the days and nights when others

The Ornaments

In winter, the island returns to Main Street. During the warmer months, we avoid Main Street: too much traffic, too much chaos, and too few reasons to be downtown. The Hub no longer saves the Sunday papers in their cubby holes, there’s no wing night at the long gone AC, and Hardy’s has disappeared and taken Bingo the parrot with it. Almost everything we could want, from glazed donuts to step ladders to Mom’s prescriptions could be found near empty parking places, away from the confusion, chaos, and cobblestones.

But in the winter, downtown sidewalks offer a place to be. The buildings offer a windbreak most days, the sun is out, and you can still get a cup of coffee until the light dims, the temperature dips, and the bar at the Brotherhood becomes a favorite retreat from the weather.

Over the buildings, over the scratching fingers of the elms, over the spires, glows the faded brightness of a winter sky. To the east, beyond the harbor and the Wauwinet, winter clouds build. During the course of the afternoon, the outriders come slipping to the west, followed by the cavalry, and infantry until the sky musters in regiments of purple clouds.

In winter, most Main Street stores are closed. Most of the restaurants are dark. The parking places have opened up and no gentle soul is trying to negotiate the bricks and stones in high heels. Main Street remains the gathering spot, be it to browse the bookstores, look at the water, or people-watch.

The island returns to the islanders at Halloween. The sawhorses come out and the road closes to cars. Then it opens to children. Their costumes may have been out of a box, out of a closet, or out of the magic in someone’s fingers. We walk around and recognize each other after a long summer amid the Platinum Circle Members and their Valued Guests. Our costumes show us off: a good costume reveals more than it hides. One family dresses up as Tetris blocks, another as Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, another as four witches and death. And the babies. And the dogs. We wander and wonder and smile. Then, November begins and the scallopers dock in the Boat Basin slips that the Hinckleys and Herschoffs abandoned weeks before.

Just before Thanksgiving, the D.P.W. lines the streets with Christmas trees. The schools, the day care centers, and the clubs get out the glue sticks, the glitter, and the laminators. Assigned a tree, these groups endeavor to put little hands to work in creating glue gun leaves and scallop shell history.

No one is looking to buy a first grader’s ornament as a souvenir of their Nantucket Stroll—we aren’t decorating for the money. Instead, we want the ornaments to complete our collection: Wee Whalers to Fifth Grade. When my boys were smaller and frosted with wonder, a walk downtown was aimed at finding our family heirloom hanging on a tree in front of the toggery store or the drugstore. Later, when strollers have gone back home and windows are papered with 50% off signs, we will recover the scallop shell or the self portrait, bring it home, and hang it on our own tree. It’s a leaf we won’t let fall.

We hang it again and again, through college and career and weddings and children and all the dark times, year after year, until there is a box of ornaments to be passed down. The value remains—the scallop shell Santa holds the moment, the story, and Main Street memories inside it.

The mother and I have all the boy’s ornaments. They remain in the sentimental lockbox that holds baby clothes, varsity letters, and Christmas ornaments. To walk up Main Street at Christmas, or shortly after, is to see that next layer of memories, of stories, build up in the hearts and mouths of islanders, like leaves on the trees. We change, but the street doesn’t.

The stores change: no longer can you rent videos or print photos downtown. The clothes, the coffee, and the climate has changed. We have cut down one generation of elms and replaced them with the next generation. But the street remains, paved in stone and framed with sidewalks of brick. It remains not just because of laws and rock, but custom. We need a place to be, even if there is no reason to be there. We need a place for us to be pulled back together, out of the job sites, and beaches, and homes. It pulls us back, in the lee of the wind and in the shadow of the winter sun: we all walk, we all look, and we remember what we have been, what we will be, and what remains.

On Christmas Eve, we return. We bring the tickets, and the kids, and a little something to keep us warm in case the wind picks up. They call the numbers that we never win (but we know that woman: she’s nice. I’m so glad that she won…”) We aren’t there for the money. We gather there to take attendance and to be counted. We also remain.

Worrisome Invaders

Ornamental grasses are a popular part of many Nantucket landscape designs. They add movement and provide drama, all while giving a naturalized look to the landscape. However, many of these ornamental grasses are now being seen as weedy, if not invasive on the island—we need to do all we can to prevent spread into our natural areas and value our native grasslands.

One ornamental grass in particular has been causing alarm in the conservation community on Nantucket for the past several years: Chinese Silvergrass or Miscanthus sinensis. While you may not know the name, chances are you know the plant. This tall grass grows in large bunches. The elegant, tall plumes can stand over 10 feet tall when in bloom. It flowers late in the summer and holds onto its seed heads well into the fall through January. The feathery seed heads sway in the breeze along driveways and road edges, often flanking entryways. This beautiful grass, though, likes to move beyond where it was intended.

You can also find the plumes along the sandy road edges or creeping into open space, well away from cultivated yards. The wind-dispersed seeds have no problem travelling beyond where they were planted, dotting the landscape of our island known for its blustery winds. Island ecologists and land managers have become increasingly concerned, as they attempt to manage the tenacious grass and try to keep it from spreading into our valuable sandplain grassland and heathland habitats.

Due to its easy maintenance, fast growth, showy flower and seed heads in late summer and early fall, and tall bunched growth, Chinese silvergrass is popular in landscaping. It is adapted to a wide range of habitats, growing successfully in well-draining and moist soil, partial shade, or sun. The very qualities that make it good in the garden also contribute to its invasive characteristics.

Miscanthus is a genus of grasses native to Eurasia and the Pacific Islands. M. sinensis was first introduced to the US in the 1890s. It was brought to Massachusetts in 1916. We don’t know exactly when it was first on Nantucket, but we know its use was widespread by 1970.

A Play to Warm Your Heart

On Tuesday, November 26, the curtain goes up on the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket’s encore presentation of the stage adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s Winter Street series.

Back by popular demand, this heartwarming production by TWN’s Justin Cerne is faithful to Hilderbrand’s vision and writing. “Justin has done a brilliant job of combining all four Winter Street novels and creating a play that is engrossing, funny, heartbreaking and filled with the best emotion of the season...wonder,” Elin commented. “Perhaps the most important character is the island where the play is set which is, serendipitously, where the play is being performed. This play is of Nantucket, on Nantucket, and for Nantucket."

Elin Hilderbrand's Winter Street follows the Quinn family through several seasons of holiday magic, punctuated by weddings, insider trading, births, deaths, ex-loves, new loves, and old ex-loves. Mostly, this is a story of love—deep, passionate, kind, requited, unrequited—so much love that it hurts and yet makes you feel full and warm.

On stage this season through December 8, Elin Hilderbrand’s Winter Street shows sold out last year, so get your tickets now at theatrenantucket.org, and celebrate the season with The Quinns and the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket

Where Legends are Born

from page 7

decide to stay home due to poor conditions. You have to know where to go and when and what lures to use once you get there. The recent winners of the Inshore Classic Beach Division are folks that you’d put on your short list of the best fishermen you know: John Colton (2020), Rafael Osona (2019, 2021, 2023), Kris Wiggin (2018), Lois Boland (2017), Dennis Dias (2017 and 2016).

So let’s set the stage for this year’s amazing finish—it’s 11 am at Great Point on Saturday, October 12. The tournament ends in one hour. A crazy mixed species bite is happening, and the following contestants are fishing in front of the lighthouse, all within sight of each other:

• Brian Majczak, the 2022 second-place and 2023 third-place finisher. Brian was in position to bring home his first beach championship. Brian hoped to upgrade his striped bass, as his best striper was a modest 33.25 inch fish. Brian’s point total was 126.5;

• Bobby King, the young upstart who had landed a 39.75 inch striper to put himself into contention earlier in the week. Bobby was in fourth place, with 123 points. His bluefish was 30.75, leaving room for improvement;

• Rick Ramos, the 2023 runner-up. Rick had moved up steadily, but his bluefish was lacking, measuring only 30.75. Rick had 123.75 points, just ahead of King, and only 2.5 inches behind Majczak;

• Gibbs Tolsdorf, a perennial challenger who was in fifth place with 122.5 points, and;

• Rafael Osona, the Freddy ‘effin Kruger of this crew. Rafael has won three of the past five Classics in the Beach category.

Rafael hadn’t caught a false albacore yet and, thus, wasn’t in contention. Or was he? The albies were around, and they were chewing. As were the bluefish. As were the seals. Yes, the seals—the persistent wild-card and scourge in the world of Nantucket beach fishing. The contestants had to hook a fish and find a way to land them before the thieving mammals could grab the fish and steal their shot at glory. The clock was ticking.

Bobby King was having himself quite a tournament. He was fishing hard. Bobby had texted me on the previous Sunday, saying, “I hooked into the gator bluefish I needed to make it interesting on the leader board. Had it midpoint (to

the beach) and got sealed. Needless to say, I’d like to pay that seal a visit! Unbelievable! I need to go to counseling after this one.” Ouch! Bobby is a great guy, and it was so good to see him competing so well.

Brian Majczak told me this: “I was confident with 3 of the 4 species, but without a bigger bass I knew I was vulnerable to losing the top spot. I was focused on finding a few more inches with a bigger bass.”

I asked Brian how much he fished on that final day. He told me that he had started out at 3 am, looking for that one striper that would clinch the deal for him. Now here he was, fishing amongst his closest challengers, feeling the heat.

Neil Krauter, in third place on that final day, was not on-island to try to boost his tournament point total. In fact, he had to miss the last week of the event. Don’t you hate when work gets in the way of fishing? Neil earned several top 5 finishes in the Classic over the years. He told me, “You’ve got to put in long days, long hours, and get rewarded. A lot of people needed a bigger blue. And the albies were scarce—a lot of people just needed an albie and they’d be in the mix. There had been about a 10-day stretch of big bass on the outside edge (of Great Point). People were still chasing the albies.”

I had seen Neil quite a bit through the tournament. Neil would bring Fisher, his lab puppy, out with him. Neil’s brother Chris won the Classic’s Fly Fishing Division this year. Chris told me that the secret to his success was fishing where the seals weren’t around. “Choose your shots wisely. The seals make fly fishing a hopeless endeavor.” I’m with you, Chris!

Rick Ramos is the most affable guy that you’ll meet on the beach. He’s a fun person who also gives a lot of himself to make things better for others. Rick is also a crucial cog in the success of the August Blues Tournament, putting in many hours behind the scenes to make that charitable tournament work.

So how did that final amazing hour of fishing shake out? Brian didn’t catch his striper. Rafael didn’t catch his bluefish. Nor did Bobby. Rick Ramos did, however, and the 34.5 inch gator that he landed in the waning minutes was enough to secure the 2024 Inshore Classic championship.

One of the best things about this tournament is the heartfelt camaraderie shared by the participants. Everyone involved congratulated Rick and was happy to see his hard work rewarded. And we’re all looking forward to the 2025 season! Steve “Tuna” Tornovish is a Nantucket native who has spent his life fishing from the beaches of his beloved island. Worrisome Invaders

from page 9

In New England, we primarily have two species which have become naturalized, which means they escape cultivation and have established populations outside of garden beds and cultivated landscapes. In addition to the Chinese Silvergrass, we have Miscanthus sacchariflorus, known as Amur Silvergrass. M. sacchariflorus was noted to be aggressive and was evaluated as an invasive in 2005. The Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group (MIPAG) considered the evidence (including photo documentation, herbarium specimens, and expert testimonials) and deemed the plant as likely invasive. This means it is a non-native plant with the likelihood of causing ecological harm by spreading aggressively, forming dense monocultures and potentially outcompeting native species, especially in “minimally managed habitats.” With this designation, M. sacchariflorus is now on the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List, which bans the importation, sale, or trade of plants deemed invasive.

That’s good news for those battling M. sacchariflorus infestations. But what about its close relative? When M. sinensis was first evaluated by MIPAG in 2005, it was deemed to have insufficient evidence, stating: “More data needed for minimally managed habitats.” The State looks to hard data: documented occurrences and dense populations in minimally managed habitats. “Minimally managed habitats” are natural areas like much of our conservation land on Nantucket.

We’ve had nearly two decades to assess and gather more data.

This past September, Dr. Sarah Bois and Jenny Kafas of the Linda Loring Na-

ture Foundation again proposed Miscanthus sinensis for listing to MIPAG. In the nearly 20 years since it was first evaluated by the state, many more populations have been found with the increased use of this plant as an ornamental. The recording of occurrences and data collection methods have also improved, with databased like EDDMapS and iNaturalist. MIPAG will vote in December whether to recommend the species for listing on the state prohibited plant list. Data has been gathered from throughout the invasive range of the species, with detailed attention to Massachusetts records. There is a lot of evidence on the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard and, hopefully, the evidence from other parts of the state is enough to consider the plants.

Why do we care so much? M. sinensis can form large clumps along disturbed areas, displacing native vegetation. The grass is also extremely flammable and increases fire risks of invaded areas. Not only does it carry fire, but fire can benefit the plant, causing increased spread. Here on Nantucket, the Invasive Plant Species Committee (IPSC) monitors non-native species across the island. The IPSC has been keeping tabs on Miscanthus and the habitats it invades. Of particular concern are our globally rare habitats: sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands, where Miscanthus has been shown to invade. M. sinensis is a known invader in the southeastern US. We can learn a lot from our near neighbors as our climate becomes more similar to areas like New Jersey and Long Island, where M. sinensis is already seen as a threat to grassland and pine barren habitats. Our milder winters and maritime climate are believed to have contributed to the beneficial conditions for the species.

On Nantucket there have been continuous management efforts by the Land Bank and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation at several sites since at least 2019. M. sinensis has been a target for manual and chemical treatment by multiple conservation groups. The Nantucket Land Bank has dug, pulled, and treated Miscanthus at several properties. On property owned by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, Miscanthus hot spots are found throughout the Middle Moors and west to Sanford Farm. Knowing how invasive the plant is in other locations; some have adopted a “zero tolerance” policy for the plant.

At the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF), a few clumps have found their way onto the grasslands. These clumps have been removed; however, the primary problem is along Eel Point Road, where the LLNF team manually digs up clumps every fall. As a wind-dispersed plant, seeds and seed heads blow over onto the LLNF property from surrounding yards. After years of attacking the new recruits,

from page 19

ecologists on- and off-island want to tackle the root of the problem by having the species listed as an invasive at the state level, prohibiting further plantings. What happens if M. sinensis makes the state prohibited plant list? Once a plant lands on the list, it is prohibited from sale, transport, and trade in the state. The ban isn’t immediate: there is a slow phasing out, especially for plants in the horticultural trade. And the ban doesn’t cover plants already on the landscape, so the problem will continue for some time before the listing has any effects.

How can you help? First: don’t plant any new Miscanthus plants. If you have them, dig them up or make sure to cut the seed heads in fall before they disperse. As with many of our invasive or non-native plants, more documentation is needed. If you see Miscanthus growing on a roadside or in conservation land, photograph it and upload the photo to a database like iNaturalist or EDDMapS. Not sure of the identification? iNaturalist uses crowdsourcing and experts to verify records and help with identification. Make sure photos have close-ups of the inflorescence, habitat photos, and note, where possible, if it is planted or an escaped plant.

There are great native alternatives to planting Miscanthus that provide beauty without the risk of ecological harm. Native switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), and Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans) are tall bunch grasses that combine visual appeal with ecological benefits. If you use landscapers or gardeners, ask for these alternatives. Consumer demand can drive change in the absence of state regulations.

Why bother with Miscanthus? At this point, it’s an ecological problem that can be solved. In invasive species management we use the “early detection, rapid response” approach: it is much easier to control an invasive plant infestation while the population is still small. Right now, we are at a critical juncture with Miscanthus: we know it is invading natural habitats, and, if we act soon, we have a chance to address it before it becomes a much more widespread and expensive concern.

Want to help prevent the spread of non-native invasive plants? Contact Sarah Bois at stbois@llnf.org to become added as a volunteer to the Invasive Plant Species Committee for Nantucket.

months to plan it, about 4 hours to host it, and...about 4 minutes to Plunge it.”

Atheneum staff works closely with the Town of Nantucket to ensure the event is safe: police handle crowd control; the Harbormaster and her crew are present along with USCG; lifeguards are in the water on paddleboards; and there are EMTs and an ambulance on-site.

Advance registration to be a Plunger can be done at the Atheneum website at nantucketatheneum.org/turkey-plunge-2024 for $35 per person: registration the day of the event is $50. Prizes are awarded at the event for the top 3 fundraisers, as well as for Best Costume, Youngest Plunger, Oldest Plunger, and Farthest Traveled. Anyone not on-island Thanksgiving Day who wants to participate may Plunge from afar, as long as it is done outside the week of Thanksgiving. Organizers ask remote Plungers to register and to post a photo or video tagged #PlungeDayYourWay.

Anyone too chicken to do the Cold Turkey Plunge can support a Plunger by donating (this QR code leads to the webpage; scroll down to see participants).

Access to Children’s Beach is restricted until 9 am on Thanksgiving morning. Participants enter the water at 10 am sharp—there’s a countdown. Only registered participants wearing Plunge bracelets may gather on the sand: spectators watch the event from the Children’s Beach path and field. Parking at the beach is extremely limited, so plan to park downtown and walk to the beach to view, cheer on the Plungers, and to offer thanks for the Atheneum’s many public programs and services by donating.
