Musical about Making a Musical

His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue, and Jon is still waiting tables and trying to write the great American musical.

Set in 1990, this compelling story of personal discovery is presented as a rock musical filled with instantly appealing melodies and a unique blend of musical theatre styles. Containing fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors and a band, Tick, Tick... Boom! takes you on the playwright/composer's journey that led to a Broadway blockbuster.

There are just five more performances through August 17, so buy your tickets now at theatrenantucket.org to see this youthful, endearing, and inspiring musical that embraces the universal ideal of holding onto your dreams through life's most difficult challenges.

Celebration of an Iconic Island Craft

Some are plain, beautiful in their simplicity and deeply colored by age. Others are elaborately constructed and adorned with carvings of ivory and ebony, scrimshaw, gold, and gems. They are round, oval, square, and even heart-shaped. Many are made to be totes and purses, with others designed as wine coasters, bread baskets, vases, mirror frames, ornaments, and even cradles.

This Wednesday, August 14, the Nantucket Historical Association will host its annual summer fundraiser, Baskets & Bubbly, to support the island’s iconic craft of Nantucket lightship baskets with a Celebration Under the Whale in their Nantucket Whaling Museum. Held from 5 to 7 pm, the event promises to be a fun summer gathering to bring your favorite lightship basket and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and bubbly. Tickets are available at nha.org.

“A Nantucket lightship basket, no two exactly alike, reflects the creativity and ingenuity of the person who made it,” commented co-chairs Sandie Owens and Karen Butler. “We encourage those who own a Nantucket lightship basket to carry it on your arm to share with all at this event. This annual tradition of an informal basket parade has been ongoing for many years [during Baskets & Bubbly]. We will look forward to seeing everyone at the celebration.”

In addition to the in-person event, there is a Baskets & Bubbly online auction that began on August 3 and continues through August 14. The auction includes more than 60 lightship baskets and basket-related items, with a “Buy Now” option on some items. This virtual auction offers the opportunity to bid on exquisitely handcrafted items, including an antique basket with mahogany base donated by Sylvia Antiques, a stunning 15-inch open round Nantucket in a Basket with mahogany base inlaid with a silhouette of Nantucket in quilted maple by Karen

My Evil Plan

Are evil scientists born or made?

I cannot tell you the answer today to this age-old question, but seeing how I’m currently conducting a series of diabolical experiments, I have a feeling that I’m well on my way to finding out.

Now calm down, folks: I’m not doing really evil things like trying to develop a flu virus that will kill millions, crush economies, and bring life as we know it to a screeching halt. Seriously, no one is that evil, right? Nah, I’m more of a “gardenvariety” scientist. My scheme is all about developing a worldwide network of awesome young fishers who will dominate the island beaches for years to come.

Any evil scientist worth his or her salt needs a role model. I can only think of one who has all of the proper qualities. A misunderstood genius...a man who wants a better world but goes about things in an unconventional way...a guy who loves hanging out with an amazing supporting cast. Yes, my evil scientist career will be modeled after the wonderful Gene Wilder, who starred in the hilarious 1974 classic movie, “Young Frankenstein.” Wilder’s take on Dr. Victor Frankenstein shows us that it’s just got to be in your blood. Try as he might have to repress his true nature, ol’ Dr. Victor couldn’t avoid getting pulled back into the family business.

I come from a fishing family. My grandfather (and namesake), Steve Tornovish, ran a fishing boat on the Great Lakes, laying out nets with his brother and sons. The Tornovish crew worked hard and faced down all of the challenges that nature and government could throw at them. My dad moved on from the commercial fishing life but it always haunted him. Today, my brother Billy and I keep the family fishing genes going strong (and let’s not overlook our sister, Lisa, a well-known fluke killer!).

Dr. Victor Frankenstein was all in on creating his glorious monster. So am I. But much like my esteemed role model, I need parts to work with. Dr. Victor sent the unforgettable Igor (Marty Feldman, with the movable hump on his back) out to fetch body parts. My experiment had to be somewhat more subtle. I decided to use a combination of awesome local Nantucket kids, as well as kids whose unsuspecting parents hired me to take their vacationing families out fishing. My labo-

Seagull Kleptomaniacs of Nantucket Island

You may have heard about the recent theft that occurred at Stop and Shop. A man’s wallet was stolen from his cart right in the parking lot. It was front page news! Ok, it wasn’t front page news, but the perpetrator was identified as a frequent culprit of such crimes—a seagull.

If I were to defend the alleged perpetrator in court, I would definitely win the argument. How can I be so sure? What defense could there possibly be with eye witnesses who saw the perp fly away with the cash? Well, the victim said the thief was a “seagull.” My friends, there is no such thing as a seagull…(mic drop).

The term seagull is actually a misnomer. Gulls are, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, “any of numerous long-winged web-footed aquatic birds (subfamily Larinae of the family Laridae).” The term “seagull” was likely used because many gull species are found along the coast. However other gulls have ranges that are inland and include freshwater habitats.

On Nantucket (and other beach-going areas) gulls are taken for granted. They are overlooked and underappreciated, which makes them a particular favorite for me. Called by many derogatory names such as “trash birds” or “beach rats,” these gulls are seen as more of a nuisance than as birds to be admired. Stealing sandwiches and stalking children with French fries can give them a bad reputation. Looking at it a different way, human habits with food and trash have caused the birds to act this way. The gulls (and other birds) have been able to take advantage of an available food resource (i.e. people) and because of this ingenuity and resilience, we de-class them. We delight in other shorebirds: plovers, oystercatchers, sandpipers, etc. But our gulls are not given the same respect.

It is ironic, however, because gulls weren’t always as common as they are now. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that gulls became urbanized in many areas,

AN ISLAND POINT OF VIEW:

Moor Blueberries

In the sweat of August, my Boon Companion and I retreat to the quiet places. For most of the year, he can run about unleashed in some of the most dog-friendly parks and play areas, but when the summer comes the existing rules are reposted, underlined, and enforced by the sad, angry, and afraid.

Now, as the proud partner of an eighty-pound yellow lab, I know how people react when he runs to them, barking and slobbering. The “Ambassador” is aggressively friendly, which I explain as best I can when I trot after Himself up the path. In the “R” months, most of the other dog people are familiar with my Boon Companion. But, as the boat fills and the days lie out on the sand, the pint-sized service animals find themselves nose-to-nose with the Big Dope. They all think one word: “snack.”

So, in order preserve everyone’s good feelings and keep the economy percolating, we spend an hour or so in the interior of the island, in the moors between Milestone and Polpis Road, a step out of time and two steps away from the tender and delicious little dogs.

Out here, the Big Dope can chase as many deer as he can catch. He can poke his nose into thickets, bushes, and brakes. I will walk along one of the two-lane “paths” while he disappears into something thick, sticky, and splashy. Then he will emerge, wet and muddy, shake or dry himself in the sand before darting back into the out-of-bounds bushes in search of something tasty and dead. Our path swings about and emerges into a burned over area, without those bushes. He lifts his head over the grass and races after the ghosts and will-o-the-wisps in the waving brown stalks

Now, one of the unacknowledged pleasures of my walks in the center of the island comes with a keen eye and the whisper of local knowledge. Free food is out here. In this hot and sunny summer, with the heavy spring rains, the berries have been weighing heavy across the island. This year, the raspberries, the black-

Gallery Big Bathed in Light

Nantucket’s natural light can be extraordinary. From the gentle glow of an island sunrise to the “golden hour” just before sunset, the light is soft and diffused, thanks to the clear air. Other times of day, when the sun is lower in the sky, the light takes on a warm, almost ethereal quality, and the interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and tranquility.

Artist members of the Artists Association of Nantucket have captured the beauty of this natural light in Bathed in Light, AAN’s newest exhibition in their award-winning Big Gallery. The show is on display through Monday, August 26th.

This exhibition’s theme encouraged AAN artists to highlight the subjects and themes they were most drawn to, all while being inspired by Nantucket’s serene ambiance. AAN’s Artistic Director Robert Frazier explains that Bathed in Light “celebrates the unique visual atmosphere of our island—the changes in light, shifts in weather, and the moments of dramatic shadow across our streets, harbors, and moors.”

Located on the second floor of the Thomas H. Macy Warehouse at 12 Straight Wharf, the Big Gallery is the perfect place to showcase local artwork of all media, with its lofty ceilings and tall windows. The Big Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10-5 and Sundays from 12-4.

ratory would be spread across the vast expanse of Great Point. And my gauge for success would be the junior division leader board of the August Blues charity fishing tournament. Mwahahahaha!! (Pro tip: if you ever need a chuckle, just google “evil laugh”—the results are too funny!)

My first victims...I mean experimental subjects or let’s just say “clients”...were the Poston family from Raleigh, NC. The wonderful and unsuspecting Max and Ashley Poston were lured into letting me fish with their two awesome kids. Wells, their son, is 11 years old, and he just loves to fish! Their daughter, Reese, is 9. From what I observed, Reese will grow to be a force of nature. She has a strong competitiveness streak that I admired from the get-go!

Ashley and I talked a lot about the criteria for the August Blues junior tournament. She was all-in on helping her kids submit any fish that they caught during our trip. We headed out to Great Point on August 1, opening day for the monthlong event. The wind was blowing at a better than brisk pace out of the southwest, a fairly common situation for the Nantucket summer. Thus, the best fishing was going to be on the inside position of Great Point on the way to Coatue.

Upon our arrival, the conditions looked promising. Birds were going crazy across the bay, diving on unseen baitfish. The long streak of windy days from the southwest had piled up an aggravating amount of seaweed for us to contend with on every cast. But I had a feeling that if we worked at it, we would catch some fish. Or, at least, enjoy an amazing day on a beautiful beach. Win-win, right?

I talked with Wells about the tournament. He loves to fish and was excited to participate. Our discussion went like this:

Steve Tuna: “So if I cast my rod out and hook a fish and you reel it in, does it count as a fish that you can enter in the tournament?”

Wells: “Nope. I have to cast on my own, hook a fish and reel it in all by myself.”

Tears in my eyes! This kid is the best—great integrity and a can-do spirit. And, guess what: he did it! Wells persisted, casting better with every attempt, making corrections and dealing with the wind and the seaweed until he hooked up and landed a respectable 27.25 inch bluefish! Ashley fought through the spotty internet service on the outreaches of Coatue and entered her son’s fish on the tournament’s

easy to use (and FREE for anglers 17 and under) website. Wells was on the August Blues leaderboard! My first experiment was a huge success... Mwahahahaha!!

Max knew that his responsibility as a dad was to hook up a fish for his daughter. He did so, and Reese landed her (non-tournament eligible) bluefish. Peace was restored for the Poston family. The day was a huge success!

Now for phase two of my plan…

I had selected a perfect Nantucket family for this next step. John and Amy Seip moved their family from Wisconsin to Nantucket about three years ago. Amy told me that her mom loved the Nantucket-based sitcom “Wings” so much that Amy took her to visit the island. She loved it here, and her wheels began to turn.

“I searched for openings for physical therapist positions and Nantucket Cottage Hospital came right up!” Amy still chuckles at the amazing coincidence. She dropped the hint with John and the seed germinated shortly thereafter. They talked it over with their three boys—Malachi, now almost 16 years old, Finnley, now 13, and Solomon (Sully), now 11. The Seip family agreed that they would give island life a try.

I first met the Seip family at Summer Street Church. They are wonderful. It’s so great to see their family dynamic. The boys may all be spaced two years apart, but they always demonstrate a deep love and respect for each other. We got talking about fishing, of course, and one thing led to another. The church held a fishing trip for the guys, and I got to work with the Seip boys. I could see that all three of them share their dad’s sense of adventure. Later on, I lent them a fishing rod so that the boys could continue to learn. I looked forward to my Sunday updates on their progress.

It was obvious to me that these awesome young men would fit nicely into my experiment. I contacted John and Amy, and a trip was planned. We headed out to Great Point on Day 2 of the August Blues tournament. Mwahahahaha!!

Our trip was a quick hitter before sunset due to our mutual work schedules. John is busy fixing people (hey, did I mention that my casting shoulder feels like it might fall off soon?), and Amy works with the Nantucket Historical Association as the finance manager. The boys were excited, as was I. We discussed the tournament rules, much like I did with Wells the day before. The Seip boys were so ready! Fishing reveals personalities. I watched as Malachi led the charge. He’s thoughtful, tough, smart, and caring: a natural leader. Malachi’s casting was textbook perfect. I suggested one minor correction to increase body turn, and his dis-

tance improved dramatically. Finnley is the quiet one, with still waters that run very deep. He spoke not a word but went straight to his work, as they say. Sully, the youngest of the three, was the wild one who was working overtime to keep up with his older and taller brothers. I coached Sully on smoothing out some technique issues, and soon he was casting like a champion. The laboratory conditions were perfect!

“I’m on!” Finnley, my quiet one, only had to say those two words to make my day! He worked his fish in his usual nonchalant manner until it was flopping on the beach. Amy took over from there, taking a photo against the measuring tape and submitting the fish. Now my evil plan was really cooking: I had a second junior entry, and the Seip family was one step closer to qualifying for the inaugural August Blues family division title! Mwahahahaha!!

Two trips with junior anglers, two entries on the leaderboard! In the immortal words of Gene Wilder: “It’s alive!!” And it’s just beginning, folks. I plan to keep the laboratory cooking, getting more and more junior anglers out on the beach, casting, hooking, and landing fish for the rest of the month. Be forewarned, good citizens of Nantucket! Mwahahahaha!!

Moor Blueberries

berries, and even the black raspberries have been poking their prickers in all sorts of weedy and dark corners. I have seen them at the parking lots for the beaches, in the unmowed lawns and wildflowers off of Cliff Road, and along the second hole at Sconset Golf course.

My blueberry bushes are two turns away from the main path, deep enough into the cover to allow for comfortable privacy. Once under the bushy canopy, it can be hard to find your way, especially to a Treasure of Berries. The Boon Companion would be a great guide if there weren’t delicious trails to follow. History’s footsteps can be faint. But I found the bushes.

And no berries.

They hadn’t fallen to the ground, hadn't hidden deep in the recesses, hadn’t dried up and shriveled into indigestible pellets. They were just gone.

It doesn’t really matter why the berries are gone. Even out here, a step out of time and in the bushy hush of the middle moors, any number of forces could have colluded to take MY blueberries. There was this burgundy Tahoe from Connecticut that I saw leaving when I drove in. The poor families of the island will find whatever free food they can get, be it in the ponds, oceans, or on the bushes. Or it might be those new birds from Florida that flew up on the winds of global warming and plucked away MY berries.

Either way, the berries are gone for this year. Perhaps they won’t be back next year, perhaps they will. In the middle of next July, I will try to come out earlier and get the jump on everyone else. Soon, it might be that my secret blueberry patch will become as crowded and confusing as the parking lot at the Meat & Fish. I might even have to put the Boon Companion on a leash.

Everything changes. At our best, we manage the change so that our children can go to the same beaches, catch the same fish, and eat the same blueberries as we do right now. But we are not always at our best, and we make many shortsighted and self-centered decisions wrapped in the cellophane of good intentions and excellent rationale. Let’s build a huge police station. Let’s build one more subdivision in the woods off of Old South Road. Let’s put a new parking lot downtown. Let me build this one more thing, and we can be done.

Nantucket gives off an aura of permanence. Main Street emerges from the elms and the fog and runs down into the twenty-first century. The Historic District Commission works on keeping the houses looking as if the Civil War soldiers will be able to find the old homestead when they return. You can have the same donuts you had twenty years ago, followed by the same submarine sandwiches and washed down by the same Watermelon Creams. The rest of America twists in a digital death spiral, while the fog wraps us in the eighteenth century and the horns whisper us to a damp sleep. We like to think we are different.

For everyone who moved here, the island was perfect on their first visit, be it a week, a decade, or a half century ago. When you first come here, Nantucket is every leash-less dream you ever wanted. Each return trip is an attempt to run and catch those days again. You remember the tastes, the smells, and the warm water on a southern shore, and that time comes flooding back so strong that you could almost believe that those free days haven’t disappeared. Almost.

The only thing certain is change. My blueberries may be there next year or they may not return. Baxter Road might be there for the hedge fund happy folk, or it might not. Even the Watermelon Creams might not return next spring. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow remains a hope for one more blueberry harvest.

taking advantage of available resources from humans. Gulls in general only became more common with a readily available food source. As we (people) increased our waste, we also increased an available resource. Uncovered landfills and open dumpsters are like big buffets. Many gull species were just the ones adaptable and smart enough to exploit those resources. Gulls are intelligent birds. They not only learn behavior that proves successful but will educate their young to do so, too—especially when it comes to food sources—and they teach the successive generations.

So what kinds of gulls do we have here? It partly depends on the time of year. Right now on Nantucket, the most common gulls are the Herring Gull and the Greater Black-Backed Gull. Herring Gulls are white with gray back and wings, black wingtips with white spots, and pink legs. Greater Black-backed Gulls have broad black wings, gleaming white heads, and big yellow bills. Greater Blackbacked gulls are actually the largest gull in North America: it’s the king of the beach. Both species breed on Nantucket, nesting in colonies in areas like Coatue, Great Point, Smith’s Point, Tuckernuck, and Muskeget. Gulls were primarily winter visitors to our area in the early 20th century. It wasn’t until 1931 when the first Herring Gulls were reported nesting on Martha’s Vineyard and, subsequently, on Nantucket. These birds make great parents who are attentive and protective of their young. Both the male and the female of each mating pair take turns to incubate the eggs.

Other gull species are less commonly found in here during summer: Laughing Gulls, Bonapart Gulls, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls. In winter, there can be more than ten species on-island, including Glaucus and Icelandic Gulls. There really is so much gull diversity to appreciate.

Sometimes called “the Great Gull Show,” flocks of gulls of various species gather at Low Beach in ‘Sconset in the winter. Along with other shorebirds and winter ducks, the birds feed on a concentration of food rolling in the surf. Advanced birders love the gull show for the diversity and complexity of correctly identifying the similarly-colored birds. You have to be pretty hardy, though, to observe the show while standing on the beach in January holding binoculars.

Celebration of an Iconic Island Craft

from page 5

Palmer, a beautiful Goddess of the Sea basket woven by Kathleen Myers, an exquisite miniature Holly and Hydrangea basket by Ashlie Emery woven in honor of Jackie Kupper, and many more unique baskets destined to be heirlooms. In addition to lightship baskets, the auction includes art by G.S. Hill, Barbara Capizzo, Rose Gonnella, Maggie Meredith, and Linda Casey, as well as several Nantucket experiences, and jewelry by Melissa Dudley, Jerry Brown, and Allison Levy. Click this QR code to see the items and place your bids.

The Nantucket lightship basket has a long history on our island. During the early 1800s, they were robust and practical for storage and used as carrying baskets. They were in wide use in the island’s stores, workshops,

and homes. As the island transitioned from a whaling economy to a tourist economy in the 1860s, the work baskets became a popular keepsake of an island visit.

To learn more about the development of Nantucket lightship baskets from their 19-century origins to the diverse traditional and experimental forms created by islands weavers today, visit the Nantucket Lightship Baskets exhibit in the Hadwen House on upper Main Street. It highlights individual makers across time and feature the José Reyes workshop and a special case displaying the many basket purse designs he invented before settling on the iconic form still prized by collectors today. The Nantucket Historical Association’s Decorative Arts program offers a number of basketthemed workshops for youth and adults: details at nha.org.

The Nantucket Historical Association is committed to preserving the iconic Nantucket lightship basket craft by enhancing the permanent lightship basket collection, displaying exhibitions, and teaching children and adults the art form. The Nantucket Lightship Basket Fund at the NHA is used solely to carry out this mission and share the history of Nantucket Lightship baskets.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

As Nantucket’s public library, the NANTUCKET ATHENEUM has a long history of providing services and programs to the island’s year-round and summer residents. In accordance with this long-standing tradition, the Geschke Lecture Series was created as a result of a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge grant awarded to the Atheneum in 2003, a significant donation from the Geschke Foundation, and the ongoing support of many library donors. The Geschke Lecture Series has brought speakers to Nantucket to inform and challenge our audiences with current critical ideas and issues.
